Should the DEVs interact with other sites (if so, where)?

I think the title pretty much sums it up. This something I've been thinking for a while and especially since Virtue vs. Vice and the recent mythic token fiasco came up.

I personally think the Devs should do more to interact with the UO community at large and not just the one here on stratics. Some players actively avoid these boards because they don't like what is seen as harsh/biased MODs and people diverting topics of threads.

I personally am concerned with pvp and as far as I know the HOT boards are the dwelling place of a lot of the true pvpers (players that spend 80-100% of the time pvping) and a place where lots of returning pvpers go to when they're getting back into the game. I think it'd behoove the DEVs to post there for topics like the fixing factions or for Virtue vs. Vice because here the thread is flooded with very niche players who I think get over represented, RPers concerned about factions and controlling towns, a few people concerned about UO lore, Siege players, and a few people just being negative about pvp in general.

As we saw with the last time they tried to fix factions by redoing the points and making those huge bases, more feedback and pvp input was drastically needed. I'd hate to see that happen again.

    Anyone else have suggestions?

If the devs were to interact with other sites, they would likely need to follow the same (or similar) regulations that stratics follows as detailed in the RoC. Such as not allowed to discuss bugs, hacks, and exploits in detail and not allowed to discuss free shards.

While it is easy to say that it would be nice for the devs to interact with other sites, would those other sites want to change their RoC? Would the devs even have the time to interact with multiple sites and keep with, or even improve, their communication with forum posters?

I think just here is fine, unless any specific dev feels like posting somewhere else. This is the "official" board I think anyone who has been playing very long knows that this is the place to come for input and info. Its better to have one hub of info rather than having to hunt around different boards.

Ideally I'd prefer it be a Mythic run forum thats tied to your account, but I don't see that happening.

The more places the devs go the more in the know they can be about things as well though.

Ohh... I've no doubt the DEVS read a ton of different boards, but posting in an official manner is just for here it seems. I don't think I'd really want them to be posting in a bunch of different places, bc imo they don't interact with us enough on just this one site let alone many.....

I also understand your point about talking about PvP on these boards. Such threads do get pounded by the babbling loonies of stratics that typically are not PvPer's and definitely not HARDCORE (that's all they do) PvPer's. I've long ago convinced myself that the best we can do is simply supply that good idea in the thread and ingore the masses. If a PvP concept is so good then hopefully it will be easy for the DEVS to see / realize that as well. I don't think the HOT boards is a good representation of the ULTRA elite PvPers either though. Sure it's ATL PvP which is probably the biggest pool of players & there is definitely great PvPers that post there, but sadly there's plenty of umm.. "UO challenged ... I've got nothing better to do" types as well heh.

No. There should be a proper, full time, well informed community rep regularly talking with the players all over the place, through forums, the UO website, social media - whilst the (already too few and pushed for time) Devs should be allowed to get on with working on their ideas, bug fixing, repairing systems and occasionally doing interview type chats or being involved with rare 'user groups' about specific changes to playing styles or very rare general 'chat sessions' with all the playerbase.

That's how proper companies go about these things, but it won't happen here because EA won't invest the money.

Given the small number of Dev's we have, who can truly say they know what their workload is, what their pay scale is, and what is expected of and denied to them by the company ruleset? I'm guessing that they give sufficient attention to UO during their normal workweek, to not be especially inclined to push aside their families at night or on weekends and come here just to be verbally abused by a few here who apparently think that they could do a better job - without truly knowing the first thing about what that team is up against.

I know that if I were a Dev and came here to look for ideas and constructive critism, how long do you think I'd keep an open and friendly attitude towards people that call me a dumbass ? Not long, I don't have to... This is where polite discussion comes to die, and I'm sure it didn't take them long to figure that one out.

So, go ahead and advertise your PvP site... I don't know about the Dev's, but you might recruit some of the people here that enjoy PvP as much as you do. That would be fine... Go there and massage each other's ego... If the Dev's are interested, I'm sure they'll come across this thread... Since they do visit...

I don't know of any board that it is allowed to discuss those things, do you? People may refer to a 3rd party program or a free shard by name but on no board that I've ever encountered is it allowed for posters to advertise for a shard or detail how a program or exploit works.

I did notice though that some exploits, such as the current gargoyles throwing bolas while flying, were noted on other boards long before they were mentioned on stratics. I think that as an argument for the DEVs to look to other sources and the larger community. They'd have a larger pool of intel.

I don't think keeping up with boards is the great time consuming task you're making it out be. How much effort would it be to copy the initial Virtue vs. Vice concept post and paste on to other boards. It now seems like Kyronix is checking up on that thread and posting in it at the most once a week, that really can't take more than 15min tops.

For the second part of your post, it's the internet, I'd hope any rational adult would be able to not get worked up over trolls calling them names.

Lastly I'm not trying to recruit anyone to any site. I'm trying to get the DEVs to interact with the larger community. The HOT boards is the largest pvp centered community I know of. Your prissy response of stroking egos is exactly why the DEVs should look elsewhere for PVP input because people like you bog down the few threads that exist here with negative unrelated posts.

Uhh, the HOT boards are a total cesspool filled with trash talk and screenshots of fake kills.

Not to mention that HOT hasn't been an actual pvp guild for years now. The guild was started by the worst idoc hacker/cheater in the history of the game and is currently run by a complete non pvper.

This contributes almost nothing to the topic.
1.The current state of the HOT guild or the person who founded it has nothing to do with the fact that a large community of pvpers post there.

2.Yes, there is a lot of trash talking there. Again, I don't get why anyone would care so much about anonymous people on the internet talking trash, they don't know you, no reason to take it personal, and it's easy to ignore.

    3. Despite all the trash it's been proven that it's possible to have a decent discussion on changes to the game, that was the case on the boards the last time they tried to change factions, and I think that it could be oof help if DEVs listened, that's all.

P.S. If you're the Goldberg that ran MVP on Chessy I find it ironic that you're complaining about hackers and trashtalk.

It doesn't take much time to look over forums, true. But it does take some time to communicate with posters, especially over several forums. I think some devs have posted on the UOforums site. The sites they post on is enough. It is much better to have the majority of their communication focused on one particular site rather than scattered over more sites. If players wish to participate with the devs or simply read what they post they can easily come here and make an account.

Not every UO player has the ability to post here. If someone previously violated Stratics' Rules of Conduct and are now IP-banned, they cannot use the site to make posts. I imagine, but am not 100% sure, that there's also a possibility that they may also be prevented from reading threads as a visitor.

This person of which you speak rarely contributes anything more than Backtalk and Trolls. Pay them no mind. I've not seen a single post by this person ever that was kind, helpful or beneficial to the community either of these forums or in game.

The problem could be fixed rather rapidly..setting up a official forums on UO.com wouldn't take much work..still confused how a game still running in 2013 doesn't have an official forum set up

    1) There is only trash talking on those boards. There are never legit discussions about the advancement or development of pvp. Go check right now if you don't believe me.

    2) I don't know who you are referencing when you talk about people taking things personal but I can assure I never take any in game or forum bs personal so what exactly is your point?

    3) I was certainly in MVP on Chessy but what does that have to do with the topic? I never complained about hackers. I simply stated that the boards you referenced are nothing more then a trash talking cesspool and that the person who founded the guild the boards are based upon is the worst idoc cheater/hacker to ever play UO. That btw is public knowledge that is not refuted by anyone other then his mates lol.

    4) My post was 100% on topic as it illustrated the fact that the boards you referenced have nothing to do with legit pvp discussion. They are biased towards the guild that created them and they are a cesspool.
What don't you understand about that? The name of the boards is the name of the guild. What impartial discussions do you think they are having?

P.S. What would possibly make anyone think that the devs should take any type of pvp input from a guild specific board? Especially when that guild is not even a pvp guild?

P.P.S. The board you referenced has exactly 4 registered users online right now.

1.If you spent 5 seconds on the board it's pretty obvious it has nothing to do with the HOT guild or the guy who founded it back in the 90s and is no longer the gm. Secondly you're trying to discredit the board by calling the guy who founded it in the 90s and is no longer GM a hacker and claiming there's too much trashtalk for it to be worth anyones time, if you cared so much about hacking and trashtalk I find it hypocritical that you ran with MVP, a guild that had quite a few cheats and did a lot of trashtalking.

Also board is sponsored by Link/JC the builder who I'm pretty sure rarely even plays now, hardly posts, and in no way promotes HOT specific things. Besides the name, which is numerous years old, the site has nothing to do with the current HOT guild, it's kept open simply for the community.

    2. Two of the most recent topics on the board are from people asking about returning to the game, thats where some pvpers go for info, and so it could be to the advantage of the DEVs and the game in general to try and explain what's going on currently in game.
Further, though there is a lot of trash talk that's no reason to completely ignore the community there. It's been shown that in the past, when game altering changes are being made, such as now, the community is able to put the stupidity aside and propose valid ideas. A small percent do post here but as my initial post said I feel that their opinions get overshadowed by niche players (see the original post). You're response didn't illustrate anything, you just gave a terribley innacurate account of the current state of the boards and again illustrated why it might behoove the DEVs to llook elswhere.

Your opinions been noted. Start another thread about nefring curse and giving more power to throwers. Thanks for the input.

I agree but at least they posted an initial concept thread for a new PVP system. Would it be that much effort to just paste it elsewhere and read up on it? I don't think so.

The secondary perk to starting this thread was that I was also curious if there were even other UO boards out there, the only one I know of that is still active is the HOT boards. If people offered up other boards it could make the job easier of copying and pasting relevant topics. Does anyone know of any other active UO boards?

    1) Currently two registered users on that board right now and half the posts are old and/or started by Zora to trashtalk. Our Devs should be checking out a guild specific board with a total of 2-4 registered users at most times of the day? Smart idea lmao.

    2) The person that started the guild and the boards still posts there to sell idoc cheated homes and gold for rl cash. What were you saying about the 90's?
There are also approx 10 other people trying to sell gold for cash on those boards. That's where our Devs should be getting input?

    3) You are a longtime and well known scammer Martell. Should I be surprised that you want to support a site that is filled with gold and house selling scammers?

It's 1am, 8 topics were posted in today (now technically yesterday, Monday), all of those topics have over 300 views, 2 are about players interested in coming back to the game, one topic was started by Zora (which highlights a dupe that hasn't been mentioned on stratics, and would behoove the devs to know about), one is about setting up an in game event, a dueling tournament (one of which was already set up through the boards and went very smoothly), and how are these topics any less valuable than the the topics on here, such as the one about what makes you smile?

Also how does any of this back up one of your initial claims that they're a biased board dedicated to a particular guild? I'll answer that for you it doesn't in any way shape or form.

Again thanks for your input. This thread isn't supposed to be about one board it's supposed to be about the potential benefits of the DEVs reaching out to a larger UO community than the one here. I made a suggestion of where to look and you're endlessly harping on it. Thanks for your input. Stop derailing my thread and go back to pursuing what you think is important. I didn't endlessly rant in your thread about nerfing mages even though plenty of others did. Thanks and goodnight.

You have serious reading and comprehension skills Martell.

There were 7 topics posted today. 2 of them were 100% pvp trashtalk full of uncensored swears and videos. 1 of them was Zora joking about selling duped items and in no way shedding any light on the actual process of duping for anyones benefit. Another one was Goose asking who still plays UO and 2 others were from Bane looking for mage duels. The last one is some old player asking about the state of the game.

What at all is there for the Devs to see again bro? Lmao.

Ohh and as I stated earlier there are also dozens of recent postings by scammers selling gold for cash.

I am not trolling your post.

Your OP stated that the devs should check out other boards and the only other boards you could come up with were guild specific boards that promote gold selling and pvp trash talk full of uncensored swearing and videos.

I forgot to mention that now there is a grand total of 1 registered user online there lol.

I like how your summation of the boards changes with every post.

Read my OP again. I'm not saying the DEVs should just read more boards I'm saying they should, when introducing a game changing concept, such as virtue vs vice, they should try to interact more with the PVPcommunity because, as I stated, the topic here is flooded with griefers and personal non pressing issues. All I'm suggesting is they post the concept thread in other places and try to interact with the community there to gleam ideas.

As for it being flooded with trash talk, I've agreed there's a lot of it, but it has been shown that the community can produce ideas and constructive criticism in a decent manner. You now seem to have a problem with swearing, it's the Internet, toughen up or ignore it, you manage to do it in game.

As for your statements about it being full of scammers and biased towards a guild that's just simply not true. Nabin sells there, soulweaver sells there, socress sells there (all for real $ sometimes yes). You seem to have a problem with rafman but given your own past guild history I don't see what makes them any worse than the cheats and scammers you played with I don't see where you're deriving this moral authority from.

If you don't have any suggestions for how the DEVs can better interact with the community at large don't say anything. If you think they're doing fine say so and if you feel like it explain why.

Having said that can a MOD please delete this back and forth between Goldberg and I? It really has nothing to do with the topic.

Part of the issue I see and understand from the OP which is well known here on Stratics is PvP threads in general that come up on here. They always end up getting trolled and locked in the end. It becomes a drama fest.

    1) People that dont like pvp will post.

    2) People who thinks one poster ideas are stupd and there idea is better will troll them posts.

    3) PvPers who dislike each other will troll each other posts.

    4) I am god of UO PvP egos come to the threads and everybody esle sucks and dont know what they are talking about posts.

    5) Dont change UO PvP and leave it be posts.

    6) Leading lambs to the wolves posts.

A guild site isn't a place for a developer to be posting at. Yes the PvP community should be heard but then again they should also try to be civil in topics to fix any issues in PvP. Maybe the PvP community should ask Stratics to have their own section which should have the harshest rules to be followed or be banned from that section if they can't conduct themselves in a mature manner.

Or the PvP community should unite and make a website and address their ideas and concerns and post the link to the developers. Not a drama fest but ideas on ways to improve PvP. Leave the arguments and name calling in the field just give them ideas which way UO PvP needs to go on the forums.

If Stratics dont want the headaches you can always ask UO Forums for a section.

Based upon observation it appears that PvPers are considerably over-represented here relative to their numbers in the game.

While it's basically impossible for me to argue that the team should only post here, and literally impossible to argue that they should only visit here (and I'm confident they at least look at other forums), if PvP is the point, Stratics has that covered.

Can a mod please delete this entire thread as it makes no sense at all and the OP clearly references by name an uncensored and guild specific board that promotes gold selling and dupes.

How is it possible that this thread was not locked already?

Can I start a thread asking devs and other players to go to my guilds boards? Or any other guilds boards?

Actually, I consider that more of the job of the community coordinator. If I was the CC (which I am not)- I would have all the fan site forums in a folder that I could just right click- open all in a new window. Then paste the same thing across all the sites. Or, rotate posting on a site while going to other sites linking the original thread.

Then again, with Stratics being the official/unofficial UO forums... and well, lacking a proper community coordinator.... and well, (consistent) communication from the team....

    I can dream.

We have no idea what sites the Dev and other staff read. And I would hate to limit them to any one or few. In fact if I am not mistaken Mesanna has given interviews on many as have others of the dev team over the years.

Where the devs choose to post is a decision for them, and them alone.
