Should UO go back to being rated, "M" for mature?

The game was released, and stayed, "M" for many ayears, then changes were made, and they lowered the rating to, "T". I mean, how many Kid's, on their own, go buy PC Games, without their parent being there anyway?

Better yet, How many Parents have EVER told their Kid's, "Oh, you want to buy UO? But it is rated, M, Sorry Kiddo, you have to wait until next year".

Personally, I would rather it still be rated Mature.

If they rated it M, and enforced the "Mature" rating, we would loose 90%
of the player base.

What's the difference?

( The people I think of as mature usually act in a G-rated way )

Ive been asking For this game to return to marture rating forever. the mature rating allowed developers to put the Ultima in ultima online. IE,
Almost every computer ultima was violent as hell, and it was scary to immerse yourself in a world such as pagan, when the opening scene is a mans head being severed.
and im sure we all remember the opening in Ulitma 7..........

Britannia is a land of great goods and tremendous evils, and we should be able to see and interact with thoes evils. We can no longer behead people? no more choping up corpses in a 2d game!!!!!! Does anyone remember the public execution system promised with Ultima Renniasance? Going to mature rating would at most lose a few really young pepole who dont know who to behave on the internet and bring back people who played when UO was mature, and maybe some new players.
little to lose, much we could bring back and add to the game. I suggest we all keep this thread alive as long as we can. and activate the public execution system for us rper [IMG]

i mean seriously, are we gonna let Age of Conan take credit for the only M rated MMO?

I thought I remembered certain things having to be taken out, like the cutting up of corpses and heads, possibly. Maybe something else, but that's all that I recall. I never like to see features taken away, even if they're small ones. [IMG]

Won't change anything.

There are kids who are VERY mature in UO and there are adults who are the WORST abusers and the LEAST mature of anyone playing.

I SINCERELY doubt that going back to Mature will improve the playerbase in any substantial manner. Even when it WAS labeled as Mature, there weer PLENTY of immature asshats running around abusing the game constantly.

Agreeable, but most of us want the content allowed with a mature rating.

ok i cant hold back. deep in my soul all i want to do is kill someone and run off with their legs and feed them to lycans.

See that I can agree with... bringing back certain content that they had to strip out.

But by no means am I under any delusion that it would improve the quality of the player base.

For a long time, I've been an advocate of UO going back to an "M" rating.

The producer for Age of Conan tried to claim that AoC would be the first M rated MMO. I had to correct him in the AoC forums... UO was the first, but apparently Neocron (whatever that is) is also rated M.

Sadly, I think the removal of some content had more to do with a cheap attempt at localization than anything. Germany, for instance, can not have "human jerky" in their games.

But realistically? Ain't gonna happen. Too many other things for the devs to worry about than adding something that could potentially alienate their small playerbase even more.

Yeah, that's the real reason for the lower rating...

Nanny state politics in some European countries would have made it impossible to continue sale of UO in them, had the rating not been lowered. This is especially ironic given that some of the most potentially offensive (in terms of lyrics) metal songs come from these nations, and make the worst stuff shown in early UO seem PG to G by comparison - gotta love those double standards.

Yeah, they completely killed the playstyle of my Stealth Fencer (This was back when Stealthers were rare and took skill to play, most were Thieves) when they got rid of decapitations. I used to be an Assassin for hire with him, some person would employ me to kill someone they hated, and cut their head off. I would then give the head to my employer as proof of the deed in return for gold. My employer could then taunt the hell out of his enemy with the person's head, was funny to watch.

'Nanny state politics' - I find that comment highly suggestive. Most European countries are pretty pragmatic and liberal when it comes to games, music, television and other media.
Making a generalisation about 27 countries and over 500 million people is a bit risky in my opinion. Talking about irony without many proper arguments, like you know all the details is just arrogant. And no, I'm not a particular EU defender.
I'm not really looking to get into a real discussion, but it's quite hard for 1 country in the EU to make a law that makes the sale of certain products illegal. Since this wouldn't be fair for companies in that country.

Getting a lower age rating means you obtain a larger audience. Which has been the goal for UO for a long time. In the beginning the game was quite difficult and only fit for a small audience. Nowadays it's a pretty open game that has done a lot to facilitate younger people.

Think about it like this: we create the bulk of the content. It's an online environment. They can rate the game whatever they want, but the in-game animations, ability to speak freely and "own" private dwellings, and the multitude of options over the years, such as the blood splatter switch, provide more than enough "mature" settings. I mean, if you want Duke Nukem, go play a shooter. Otherwise, you'll find your demographic when you choose to join one, from the multiple groups within this UO multiverse.

I've found, that in most politics, the more "liberal" a society is, the more likely it is for that society's government to try to tell you what you can an cannot do.

Cases in point:

It was the Gores that went after the music industry in North America much more hardcore than the "conservatives" that often get blamed, though to be fair, when they were doing so, they formed a coalition between the far right & far left, those who one one side thought that it was a moral issue, and those who thought it was a psychological issue. But, without Tipper (and Al supporting her), the issue would have never been an issue at all.

It is liberal & socialist lawmakers that are much more likely to try to tell you what you cannot do on your own private property. This ranges from Tobacco use to what kinds of property one can own, from cars & lawnmowers (environment) to kitchen knives (silly attempts to control "violence", such as the registration policies of the UK. What's next? Cricket bat registration?).

The lack of balance in the EU is reaching epidemic proportions - to the point where some social & ethnic groups go nearly unchallenged when others are gone after harshly for daring to rebut the former groups. Hate speech from some groups is ignored, when if you put the same hate speech into another group's mouth it is rightfully treated as the hate speech that it is. It's beginning to remind me of my own personal research into the madness between the World Wars, to understand what could cause the kind of blind descent into toleration of true evil that occurred.

"liberal" used to mean open-minded and pragmatic. These days it's at least as far off-kilter from common sense as conservatism; often more so. I find it amusing when I see "liberal" Europe block imports, even seize personal shipments, of videos and games for "moral" or "societal" purposes that wouldn't have drawn a second glance if produced for their own domestic market (do some research on the difficulty of importing some japanese animation that was at best PG rated into the UK and other parts of Europe in the 1990s - some products were seized AFTER they'd already been approved, because someone changed their mind).

Where have all the open-minded centrists gone?

Bring back the blood, gore and beheading.

After having taken a look at the arguments for and against, I tend to agree more with the idea of a mature rating. Granted, there is the off-chance that a few young ones might not be able to buy the game in stores, the vast majority of UO's playerbase is aging.

I think a few minor additions in the mature range (beheadings and bounty killings, executions, etc) could really add to the flavor of the game, especially areas that are being impacted by frequent warfare (Felucca). I think in the next few months, Age of Conan is going to show what a mature and dark game can really bring to the table. That doesn't mean turn Ultima Online into some blood-soaked low fantasy, but there are some elements where the darker and grittier themes could be a very pleasant addition.

I wish it had never lost the M rating..... honestly. From what I understand it was the european thing that made them get rid of decapitations... sad really... Wish they would have kept that and just kept it off of the "european" shards... like they do special stuff for the Japanese shards... seems only right.... however in sue happy America... you can't do much anymore anyone cause *gasp!* someone might get Offended!!!! Oh my!.... *rolls eyes*.... anyway.... It's my opinion that they NEVER should have gotten rid of the M rating.... Though I've noticed that some folk who are 14 are FAR more "mature" than some who play and are 40!... the idea of certain ages being more "mature" than others is rather bogus... Some folk just plain aren't Mature.... and likely never will be.. even at 90... Like the other post about do you or don't you let someone who's 7 play UO.... Honestly.... I wish we had the M rating.... then there would be NO question.... but at this point..... I seriously doubt putting an M rating on the game again would assist in the least with getting rid of the immature players in UO.

You know we lost the bounty system and ability to chop up players when they decided to go to a T rating. Personally I would rather this be an M rated game with a lot more gore in it. We already have enough players running about cussing like drunken sailors and RPing explicit things so based on that alone it should have stayed M.

Somewhat. AoC does have Gore (Blood Splatter, Dismemberments, Decapitation), Drinking and Nudity (Mainly boobs), but it's PvP is a bit limited. You can only PvP in 3 types of areas in the game, Keep Siege Areas, Arenas and Taverns. Tavern Brawling is PvP with a little bit of a twist.

Personally, the whole Level/Class system completely turned me off to AoC, considering games like that are basically a grindfest and the PvP is mainly determing by who's killed the most monsters (Acquired more Exp) and what Class/Equipment they got, even with AoC's "Real Time Combat" (Which was dumbed down a bit because newbs were whining about the Combos being too hard and complex).

yes. UO Should go back to being "M" rated.

my opinion is this for backing this up. Most parents do not look at the rating on the games now. Unless their kid is 5-10 years old. And most parents do not look at WHY the game got rated, mostly as a guideline for a difficulty level for the game itself.

My other reasoning for the "M" level..

The game would sell more (*coughs* IF it was on the shelf in the first place) and we would have more players because the game has the "M" rating for blood and gore. More players means more revenue.

Now im not saying open the game up and have players name themselves whatever they want, and whatever they want to name their pets, however, a little blood and gore in a FIGHTING game never killed anyone. Especially since its a fantasy game.

To OP: We might as well have an M rating because the majority of us are well over the age that it would matter. EA Mythic don't spend the resources on UO in order to gain a younger crowd in anyone's wildest imagination so it's no loss. The problem you are going to run into is coorportae lawyers and mentality. To make it M means a potential group of consumers is "prevented" from playing. This is a simple math for any marketing geek that is going to put down his foot and cry it's a bad idea.

Insults are not what garners a M rating. Graphic violence does. The little clause that says "may change during online play" is the clause that prevents any problems. Log into test any day of the week and I guarantee you that you will not have a Teen rating experience. This is ANY day of the week. You WILL NOT however, find that you can cut off peoples heads. Calling people anything you want will get you nothing other than put in jail for a short time, if that. An M rating will have little to no impact on anyone currently playing the game.

the only difference would be that player would get a free ticket to be rude as much as they like.

the freedom of free speech in the game should be only go so far as it NOT insult, defame or harrasment other player
