Yep. I'm keeping tight control over my fingers too on this one and trying to let the feedback pile up.

I like what you did, Tina. It reminds me of "The Girl that Kicked the Hornets' Nest." A lot of the reasons people don't go to siege are quite logical and I find my Siege characters whispering to me, "don't stay here....go home...its sado-masochism heaven... its bad guys and the women who craft for them..."

Well my characters have yet to win me over. I still enjoy Siege, but your "poll" has raised a lot of new questions to which we will probably never receive answers...

2 cent house comment – I noticed that a few players stated housing as their primary reason for not playing Siege. It seems like a simple solution would be to just increase the bank size on Siege only (or Mugen) to the same as a 7x7 house (i.e. 782 items). Seems like an easy win-win-win situation with very little effort.

    UO:
    - Quick programming fix/enhance for Siege/Mugen only
    - Keeps players around longer to collect more monthly fees - more things to try
    - Increase potential sale of more Soul Stones once the player gets hooked on Siege

    New Players:
    - Incentive to test/explore Siege without giving up everything accumulated on another shard or play the server part-time with adequate stock on-hand
    - Can hold additional replacement inventory or resources in the bank (i.e. replacement suits, potions, aids, imbuing materials, etc.) to be up-and-running faster in event of a looting death

    Siege:
    - Increase in potential players
    - No real loss in housing spots (i.e. that 7x7 sitting in your next castle spot)
    - You may get a few players to make it their permanent home

You know....I kinda like the above idea, it would solve the storage problem a lot of people complain about, and not create a massive amount of extra code to make a second housing system that requires refresh, or litter the shard with houses taking up space that nobody ever uses but will stand forever since they actively play on other shards.

I like the increased bank storage idea too because I really hate the idea of Siege being cluttered with houses held by people who really aren't playing on Siege. It just seems like having to actually pay for your house on Siege has to provide some sort of added incentive to actually PLAY there more often and that's what I want to see. It's a real bummer to see stuff sitting around for months/years on end for someone who's never there.

One modification I would suggest on the storage amount, though, would be to go with something slightly less than what you get with a 7x7 just so someone who DOES decide to place a house of that size because it's what they can afford or what will fit doesn't somehow feel cheated.

Having a bit more storage space would also make it easier for groups of people to share a regular house if they can't afford or can't acquire a keep or castle.

One potential drawback to increased storage for all characters on Siege might be less stuff at IDOCs. I don't do IDOCs, but as things stand now, I have to imagine that Siege IDOCs probably net more "stuff" than elsewhere because of the one character per account restriction. You just simply can't store everything you might want to store when you quit. I don't think limiting the increased storage to just characters on accounts without a Siege house would change this either. Drop the house and up would go your bank storage amount.

    Lots to consider, I guess.

ugh, yeah, my post there was about the 5th revision....I'm unsure of how anyone can spend "weeks" on siege trying to save up gold for a lrc suit..I call shenanigans on that...i mean, you can buy the cheapie ones like I use for 8k....you can get that much off mongbats in a hour if you wanted to. It's only 30 Ettins worth of gold :D

I really don't know what the solution is for the issue people raise of not wanting to put a house on Siege because it condemns a house they have elsewhere. I know I don't like the idea of just letting everyone be able to place a house on Siege as a bonus, with no effect on their housing elsewhere, even if they have to refresh the house weekly or monthly. I think that would just cause a huge mess, especially because Siege is already one landmass smaller than every other shard. I played on Lake Austin quite a bit the last couple of years before coming to Siege and it was pretty dead, possibly because of all the small towers someone plunked down all over the place years ago that never decayed. (EA finally did get rid of most of them recently.) Plus it isn't really fair to the people who only want to play on Siege and don't have a house somewhere else.

You can offer newcomers the ability to camp out in your house, but some people are just never going to trust you well enough to take you up on the offer. Some people will, however, and fortunately some of them eventually get hooked enough to stick around.

Increased bank storage seems like the best answer, but I don't know what the magic number is for that increase. I personally don't care about IDOCs. Have never gone to one and don't plan on ever going to one. I'm sure somewhere along the line I've probably purchased stuff that came from an IDOC or received something as a gift that came from an IDOC. I also know a lot of people enjoy doing IDOCs. I just wanted to point out that IF we got increased bank storage on Siege, it might affect IDOCs because people who quit could jam more in their bank box and therefore less "good stuff" would fall on the ground at an IDOC. I try to be pretty self-reliant about getting stuff, having used up a ton of my own vet rewards on Siege to get portals, commodity deed boxes, etc., but I know other people that start out fresh on Siege may not be able to use up vet rewards and therefore to some extent might be a bit reliant on people who do go to IDOCs to obtain items like that. So in the long run, would having more bank storage hurt the shard to some extent because there would be less IDOC useful loot to pass onto them?

Eh, it's way too complicated for me. I guess I just wish that more people who start out on Siege would fall in love with it and make the sacrifice of a house elsewhere and stick around for a while.

Maybe EA should figure out how to rent out units in the apartment buildings in Ter Mur.

Large increase in bank place that allows EVEN ME the ability to keep my SOUL STONES in the bank without taking 40 spaces away from me??? Im the person that keeps all his stackable resources in the bank... AND THAT CHEWS UP ABOUT 80. If I have just a few "personally rare or whatever" items in the bank (and I do) breaking a Milly check is a HEADACHE.

Increase Sieges bank space for EVERYONE to the smallests house # on the list. EVERYONE WINS. Still one char per account, I've lived with it so can they. EA makes more Token money via stones and accessories. NO OTHER CHANGES.:bdh:

the trammies are getting to me O_x.....I'm barely able to refrain from posting this video in response to how most of them handle dieing in UO angry german kid - YouTube..

PS. I love it when people who obviously didn't play until AFTER aos claim to remember the "pre-tram" days when you got "PK'd every 3 seconds, continually reskilled, and there were reds everywhere continually griefing you", so either they're full of **** about having played then or they had REALLY pissed someone off who had it out for them. Kinda like how when i used to play on origin everyone told me that siege sucked, everyone just pvp'd all the time and it was impossible to do anything else.

Some of it ticks me off as well, I mean I play a carpenter for crying out loud on Siege, like sure she pvps aha ...NOT ! Aside from the few times I shot me lil bow at WrYm :eyes: and Yasou, both, just for the fun of it, and promptly DIED...I would not say my chrs. PeeVeePee on Siege *or anywhere any longer.
I haven't really bothered to PVP since the age of sTUFF$ and math.

But yet most of my fondest memories of UO were them fights I did win *back in the day* heck I was even in Order once, and CoM and junk loved it then came a degree in math and stuff$ ..needing some book of wonders to figure out what to wear equip and smack someone with before ya do so by then ya DEAD ! LOL Oh for the good ol' days !! I didn't need to do much math to SMACK people back ..back then. Was FUN !

Course some think Ima nut case cuz I also enjoy playing the goofy dancin dead ghost when Ima dead ! Ie it is a 'social encounter' to me ! Some don't even bother to kill me no more, they FLEE ME, cuz I talk to much even dead, and ask em in dead speak how they doing, how's their gf bf or love life how's their job etc...when Ima dead. Like so what ima dead that ain't gonna stop me from talkin my murders head off with 'oh.. hi how ya doing .. etc.' LOL

I did enjoy it/pvpin' once upon a time when all one needed to layeth the smacketh down was a big honkey gm made halley, or ye lil bow, and everyone was on DIAL UP in UO ! LOl YES I WON SOME back in the day. haha

    -------

Anyhow I haven't posted much in that thread, cept the namby pamby version of UO ...slogan as some tell all for what Siege is all/and only about.
I had to comment on that comment to try to set that straight !

I've long mused that the REAL meaning of AOS was always "Age Of the Spreadsheet"

Not like you lost a whole hell of a lot pre-tram if you died either, if you were "fully" equipped you lost a plate suit and a sword...big whoop..a quick trip to the local smithy, pay the good man, and you're back in action again (or in the case of the miners, either they're a smith themselves or could easily barter w/ a shipment of ingots)

    *laughs*

Remember when valorite archer suits were all the rage.

I was still pretty poor back then, finally earned the gp to buy one from a nice smithy lady on ches. back in that day. Natch no insurance no blessings, sooo
I go outside of town with a so called macho man friend that was supposed to defend lil ol me. Soon as that red chap come near us my great defender FLED like a coward and left me high and dry to try to defend myself.

Needless to say I was seeing hues of gray, and lost my purty valorite archer suit to the vile red murderer.

Well...I had my ways. I also had a cute lil redheaded Mage dexer sort and the red chap was smitten on her. He did NOT know that she was also an alt of the Queen Zen he had just killed and absconded with me val.archer suit.

Sooooo I dun sweet talked him cuz he liked my lil red headed *Pandora*
and he let me in his house. AND I KILLED HIS ARSE !! GOT My suit back and his too !

AH tis one of my fondest old memories and all he said when I revealed whom lil Pandora also was...was

REMIND ME NEVER TO **** OFF QUEEN ZEN !

    lol
Ah memories of UO back in the day !!

I said YOU may never know whom all of me are and..
payback is hell, man, huh ? ! :):pint::thumbup::thumbup1::mf_prop:

I actually became friends with the murderer that I murdered..but the my so called great defender that bolted and run like a chicken when he was supposed to protect me...never spoke to his cowardly butt ever again !

    MEH !! GAH !!

Just read the comment to my comment about our Siege Shard slogan.

    **********&%^*+*****#

NM to each his or her own opinions, our shard slogan doth not strike me as *insulting* to the masses,
it strikes me as way stuff was meant to be in Ultima Online.
And UO was never meant to be playin only all the time some sort of game version of UO hello kitty !

MEH ! Guess sometimes one must agree to disagree.

NM Guess I am just some nutcase that actually LIKES Siege for whatever reasons us weirdos like being on or a part of playing on... Siege. lol

After responding to the "why I don't play siege poll", I really gave it some thought...my reasons were primarily 1 character and no home. I decided to juggle some stuff on my other accounts and home shards so I would have a house spot open, and started playing on siege.

My "newb" experience so far has found me running into very few people, but the ones i have come across have been helpful and friendly. The lack of funds has had little impact because a few places sell pretty good armor and weapons at very affordable prices. The NEW guild has been very kind, and the rate of skill gains is fine. Stat gain...that seems a little harsher.

I think my initial reasons why i didn't play hold true. If I only had a one UO account I would not find siege appealing because I can't just play one character all the time. Now that I am here, the things that I find most annoying are no recall and no sacred journey. And the fact that I have been there...and been there...and been there. I think advanced character tokens...or transfers of naked, itemless characters would help encourage people playing on siege. If UO's population was a new player base it would be different, there is no excitement in training the same skill you have trained several times already.

There are aspects of siege I am finding very enjoyable. Everything has value and I actually loot corpses again. Hunting and gathering makes it feel more like the old days when I didn't have an endless supply of gold and resources. I guess it feels more like a world and less like a game on siege.

But I can't help but also think that this problem isn't just siege. Very few shards have healthy populations. The people that do start out on low population shards tend to be there to farm them, collect their valuable and rare items and then transfer them elsewhere. Or end up frustrated with being on a dead shard and transfer off or start again somewhere else.

I think an interesting experiment would be a creation of a cousin of siege where there is no pvp, or completely consensual pvp. All the same restrictions, no insurance, etc... If it ended up thriving we would know that's the reason. But I have a feeling it's just that most of us remaining really don't wanna be newbs again just to end up basically where we already are somewhere else.

But I have a feeling it's just that most of us remaining really don't wanna be newbs again just to end up basically where we already are somewhere else.[/unquote]

There is truth to that theory also, once some one has their character or characters accomplished, or *done* the idea to up whatever skills all over again...again anywhere else is not something some folks are fond of. Whenever anyone anywhere accomplishes the tasks or goals they strived to achieve wherever, sorta like pixel dogs jumpin thru hoops of training, to *become* they do not want to do it all, all over again...anywhere else.

It becomes for many, a been there done it, not doing it all over again mode.

That is probably why, Siege Perilous, regardless of it's unique differences SHOULD be on the shards list for all to see from the get go. The factor that the dev. team always leaves Siege off the list like it does not even exit at all, so *youngs* new UO customers, never get to see Siege, on the entire shards list, does nothing to help Siege, one iota.

Why they can not SHOW Siege on the shards list, from the get go, with some puny *disclaimer* like Siege is a unique all felucca ruleset, or something is beyond comprehension, most of the time. I DO fathom protecting 'new' customers from felucca but in reality, be it on reg. shards or Siege, IF a new customer wishes to TRY felucca ruleset ANYWHERE I say let em, least let em KNOW it is all there TOO as part of the UO world, from the get go !

There be some that may be actually interested to DO so and don't need to be totally prevented from it like some nanny state EA UO with...having to ask a zillion times [how do we renounce our young status] etc. or discovering that Siege DOES exist after they are barely old enough to no longer be *young* and find a surprise on the shards listings.. [oh look I am seeing another shard on the shards list], heck by then they already got or worked up some skills, however puny those may be !
    --------------
For a longer UO customer like myself, I was playin UO before even Siege Perilous existed. I did come over here back in 99 to try Siege but they *wiped* it and I was like oh I am not starting all over here again again...got DONE warriors on Chesapeake with homes and stuff, so I went back to where I began.

Then trammel came tearing the huge guild I was part of in half, half stayed in *felucca* half fled to *trammel*, destroying, our guild, player run towns were literally, torn in two, makin a mess as if destroying the world/populations of UO on every older shard, entirely, never to be whole or ONE ever, again.

I have a player written book at my home on my porch on Chesapeake where 2 old fel tram moonstones are locked down over the book I wrote.
The book is simply entitled: Once upon time our world, was ONE !
It invites folks to TRY Siege.

I NEVER made crafter chrs. I hated the feeling of being *defenseless* till I came HERE. :)
There was something even WORSE feeling to me, about insurance, least to me, than even the advent of Trammel.

I had one chr. that actually began tailoring on Chesapeake, right before *insurance* and seen players *insure* my gm made thigh boots, insurance cost em more than having to buy them again from my vendor 100 gp vs. 600gp+ to insure something as silly as player made thigh boots ???

I CAME HERE 2004 & made crafters {only} ! lol I was feelin UO was becoming a coddly nanny state all wrapped up in some poofy protective shell of some suffocating UO existance pre trammel and post insurance. Im rl old rl old in UO and I don't need to be *coddled* in rl or games !! To me it was like, I was in some surreal newb sorta suffocating NANNY STATE, of UO.
    Thus I came here 2004.

Perhaps I had died so many times before trammel had even exsited, that dying in and of itself alone, via other players no longer matters to me..
and I killed some back myself back in the day.

After AOS I wanted nothing whatsoever to DO with pvp age of stuff and item$ and math.

Figured if I AM makin some newbie all crafter chrs. [skills I never really bothered with before] as a UO customer, and as a 'retired warrior', DO IT HERE. And even here by 2004 I was an *old* UO customer so I even resisited joining NEW guild cuz I was OLD to UO just new here..but I did join NEW guild in the end, cuz I was outta tinker tools and gp, ready to hang it up here again, makin/foolin around with all newb chrs. but I ran into the GM of NEW, she got me a new set of tinker tools [so I 'could' CONTINUE here !] :)

I do have 2 GM carpenters now, one here, one on Chesapeake too, and it was MIND NUMBING to do even that skill to GM 2x on 2 shards.
I do fathom, once folks up them skills, ANY skills, they may not ever wish to do any skills, like a newb chr anywhere else, all over again again ! :)

IF they could only SEE Siege Perilous on the shard list; from the get go,
it may render Siege a few UO customers that might actually prefer or be interested too, to *start* here, FIRST !

Once someone becomes an established chr. *anywhere* or characters, they would need some real motivation, to start all over again again ..anywhere.

For myself *insurance* soooo ticked me off even more than creating Trammel had destroying my guild and player town in half, back then, insurance then became my primo motivational reason to try SIEGE..."again" so like some old school [UO rebel], that no longer pvps at all even, I came HERE *again*, simply cuz there was (and I knew) there NO insurance, here !

I WAS TICKED OFF, MOTIVATED ye could say, at what UO was becoming, enough so I said..give Siege one more try and let's hope they don't wipe the shard like they did when I first came over to try Siege way back in 99.
Cuz yeh makin ye chr. all over again, again is a pain !

Liked it here, and so I stuck around.

We're glad you're here, Bethany, and I hope RoT turns out to be better than you hoped and skill training goes quickly for you. I agree with you that no shard these days (except maybe Atlantic) has a healthy population, so seeing Siege's population so low isn't much of a surprise when you look at the game as a whole.

Don't know if that poll's going to help much, but so far 124 people have voted and quite a few have made some helpful comments and there hasn't been a ton of bickering either. Maybe when it dies off, it would be good to kick off some discussion over here in the Siege forum to get some sort of consensus on a few thing to ask the devs to consider. I wasn't around the last time you all did that and am still a relative newcomer to Siege, so someone else should definitely spearhead that!!
