I believe that I have found the reason that GM's never seem to be able to come to a real player when help is needed. In the last two days I've been training a new char on a new shard beating a golem and twice I have had the pleasure of have a nice little chat with a GM as to the color of my robe, if I know what a bucket is, that's a nice weapon I have in my hand and other such daft and time wasting questions.

Could I ask that the player police squad get a life? I was there watching the screen. Never did a person from this server talk to me or stay on my screen for more then a few moments(really only long enough to page a GM and go back to thier game play which really is a form of harrasment to myself). This is a huge drain on the limited GM resource and, IMO, such players who abuse the GM's with the only intention of griefing should be recieving a nice 72 hour wake up call.

It's a conundrum. Someone who isn't afk could simply not respond to others in the hopes of getting someone in trouble. Then of course there is the fact that the gm's have no way of knowing if a page for other forms of cheating is legit or not because there is no third party cheat detection. So banning for paging is problematic at best.

However, the GM's should be given the latitude to use their judgement and hand out suspensions when there is a clear cut case of harrassment.

  3. Unfortunately, some players feel it's their sole responsibility to police their respective shards, and page on players many times daily, even when they do not know for certain themselves whether or not a player is attended. This in turn has the GM's running around on wild goose chases 90% of their time, which leaves those that actually do need help waiting an hour or longer. Personally, I feel that anyone that goes out of their way to run around their shard looking for people to page on should get a 3 day ban themselves for wasting the GM's time when it turns out that the people they paged on were actually there. Then they need to go out and get a life. I'm still waiting on a certain person to page on me because I craft while hidden. Why I do it is no one's business but my own, yet it's still taken to be a sure sign that someone is scripting.

If the devs were doing their job and there was proper anti-cheat functionality built into the server and client software it could be made clear in the TOS that policing other players is a violation of the TOS and "tattle" pages could simply be responded to with a canned response, and discipline in cases where an individual made a habit of paging in that manner. However, the GM's simply don't have the tools they need to police the game, the client and server software has no anti-cheat functionality, and we are in a situation where everyone is suspicious of everyone else and those who are justifiably annoyed at the blatant cheating that they see, or think they see, attempt to do the job that the software and the GM's should be doing.

At least the GM's are checking, but the person doing the paging should at least made an attempt to see if the person is AFK before paging. I remember watching a GM show up at Luna on Atlantic about 3 months before the release of ML and asked how everyone was doing, and all but one of the 7 people training on golems answered so the GM went up to that person and asked another question and no answer so next thing the player and GM went poof and about 20 seconds later the GM showed back up the golem went poof.

where do you draw the line?

if you see someone night and day beating on a golem and they dont talk to ya when your chatting with them do you page on them?

if you see someone recalling into the bank and you see iron or wood being dropped into their coffers night and day and they dont chat with ya when ya say hi, do ya page of them?

if ya go to jhelom to get your GGS in taming on a bull and someone is there taming and renaming the bull the same name and running the exact pattern all over the pen and they dont answer ya.... do ya page on them?

at what point DO you give a rip?

i allways find if funny people who complain about the trammy police who page on suspected UM trainers and they most of those same people cry bloody murder when someone is obviouslly running a pot chugger or a speedhack.

not that any of the previous posters do that, just a generalisation.

i dont think there is a level you can point too and say that is ok and that isnt when it comes to cheating.
either you allow cheating for all aspect of the game, or you dont.

personally i think they should have kept the guard zones out of fel and we could just say "if ya wanna cheat, do it in fel"
then we could just kill the people who are UMing instead of paging on them.
the old risk vs reward thing.
if i catch a recall miner or LJ i just kill them.
if i catch them in tram, im forced to page cause i cant kill them.

  7. I'd say the people that intentionally make it a large part of their day to recall around looking for people to page on are crossing the line. Finding someone during the normal course of your day is one thing, going out and spending several hours looking for them is quite another. The first person is a concerned citizen, the second is a vigilante.

Poo, you need to move to Siege. That's exactly what happens here. Of course, it doesn't eliminate UMing, but people have to be more discrete and careful about it.

Guardzones are little protection. A few purple pots and a shuriken and most UMers will die. Lol, I got most of my 200ish counts doing this at luna bank. Hilarious.

  10. The ironic thing about it is that these vigilante players think they're doing so much good, and feel really good about themselves for doing it, yet they're among the most hated players on their shard.

Here is a thought - if you are *really* playing the game - move away from the moongate. You can actually have the golem follow you while you whack at it.
Go Shopping and do other tasks.

You whack a Golem while sitting at the gate so you don't time out because you aren't there.

I really wish Golems would be removed. Go play the game instead.

I never chat with players I dont know if Im busy training mostly Slave---- on pacific lol. besides it shows me that GM's do exist lol. But anyhow, I don't see UM'ing as cheating, and when it became illegal it wasn't considered cheating then. They made it illegal due to one simple reason, at the time everyone was running 56k dial-up or less, they had to save bandwidth so they made UM'ing illegal. Not to be confused with scripting, I feel the real cheating going on is in Gold farming, Resource farming, PvP scripts.

You can assume that someone beating on there golem all day is pretty much has being paged on at least 50 times by 50 different players and more than 100 times by repeat pages during that day tying up the limited gm system and having others complain when they get no help in there real problems.

No cause I wouldn't bother to disturb there time to gather ratio as a resource gather myself i know about making the most of your time. Besides in order for me to know he was doing it night and day without breaks would be me to stand there 23 hours looking at him. I think I can do much better with my time and go have fun.

Nope because i went there for 1 reason to get my ggs gain and continue with my day. He could script all day for all I care Im sure there are plenty who paged on him already. Good that hes renaming bulls so that i won't waste my time taming one of them. The problem is when there is a script hunter that decided the best course of action is to take the bulls away for the day now that directly messed with my gameplay. Which means im going to take more time out of my day to go else where to get the ggs gain.

When someone tries to scam me and my friends, or grief me, or waste my time.

Though the thing about it is even if you are not cheating in Fel you will still get killed anyway lol. There is no distinction. Honest player is not going to get a free pass in fel. Recall mining or lumberjacking is the most efficient way to gather don't know why people walk though. So it's pretty much kill first and ask questions later in fel.

Scams are legal, that's another point why GM's are messing with BS stuff.

You can't sit at the gate but I suspect that you made a mistake in your thoughts.

I was "really" playing the game or else the GM would have done something either day. I have found that in my years of "really" playing the game that my chars would like to be maxed out in thier respective skills. If, for that reason, it is a better option to use my imbuer to make some jewels so I can beat a golem rather than it would be to killing this mob and then move to that mob following to another mob and lastly to another mob just to max out said skill then I should be able to whack the golem simply because its a better option. Its in the game and I am dealing with it, so should you.

I don't need the gold and I want to kill other players. I don't wish to be stuck with your version of "really" playing the game when I am more than content with my version.

That said, I still find it a huge waste of the limited resources that EA has left this game to have these situations occur. I have never had the same issue on any of the other shards I have fully made chars on just this one, so far.

I was paged on the other day while i sat in my keep casting nether cyclone. I was there but i was watching t.v. while i pushed my button to play the macro i had made in uoa. Most of my attention was not on the game and this almost got me into a bit of trouble.

My keep is located in a swamp and plague beast lords are the bane of my existence. They are constantly flagging on me when i want to run home and switch to a different character. The spawn the lords produce just happen to show as the same color as gm speech. So not paying attention to all the pinkish plague spawn showing in the corner of my screen I missed a few questions the gm had asked.

This could have been avoided had i been giving my full attention to the game instead of trying to multi-task. It could have also been avoided if someone else hadn't felt the need to be the shard patrol. I do know who most likely paged on me as i seen a couple of people wander past.(thought they were looking for idocs not someone to tattle on)

And so once again I stand by my thought that there should be permenant test center shard for people like you. YOu can have unlimited resources, say 'Set Skill' and go off and PvP to your hearts content. You don't care about the economy, you don't care about skill building, you just want to fight someone. I don't understand why the Dev's don't do this - make one US shard nothing but a test center. No xfer in/out and never gets wiped. Set skill and go.

I am a vet and have built char on other shards. I'll go out and do spawns with lower fighting and gain points that way and get SOT's to boot. Much better than golem whacking.

    Remove Golems!!!

To each thier own. I've done the char building from scratch and with having resources at hand. In this specific case I am wanting to kill a certain group and the sooner I can do so the more content I shall be.

The economy of the game is wasted. I've got hundreds of millions and nothing to spend it on. Skill gain is a pain but I've done it many times over.

There is no reason that EA should waste more resources on a limited shard simply for nothing. Half the player base in N.A. would not want to play it due simply to pinging better to other shards and a further segment wouldn't want to play as the thrill/joy/shock of winning a fight or losing it is gone. No years of shard rivals to see and friends to say hi to.

I don't think you understand PvP though I could be wrong. It's a group thing where everyone knows everyone else and when we all come home from a day of slaving away we all meet up and unwind in this game for fun, you do play this game for fun right?

People have different definitions of fun. Most of the PVP crowd that loves to bend rules for skill gain complain over and over that they dont' want to farm resources to build char suits and they dont' want to build skills.

Make a perm shard where you can all meet and have at it! Put in the middle of the US and go - just like TC. Add in the 'Kills/Deaths' counter on every toon and let people go wild. I'll bet it would get a good following and I'd be so happy if the PvP crowd that does nothing but put each other down on chat all day long would go to a diff shard. Its like listening to a room of 5 year olds arguing over who is better in a STUPID GAME with poor graphics.

But hey - if that is your reality - then fine. I play to enjoy diff things about game as others do.

There is a segment of the pop that wants nothing but a Halo version of UO. Solution : Perm test center shard with unlimited everything. Have at it. Make any skills make any char make any armor and go fight.... Talk about equality - no worry about who has more gold - just play.

Anyone who comes up to me in UO when I'm doing something that other people macro who seems to be fishing to see if I'm doing something wrong will be ignored by default.

Call a GM, waste your own time and theirs, so long as you go away, I don't care.

There's a problem with that, most of the pvp crowd enjoy putting down all the "Trammies" who haven't cheated to raise their skills, or scripted to get rich to build those godly suits they all have. They wouldn't be able to do that, and that would surely kill half the enjoyment they get out of the game...

Whats the problem? People actually reporting a lot of scripters who is gathering resources or other things unattended.... They should all get a prize for doing so.

People going around looking for IDOCs and finding scripters shouldnt report because its all good?

I personally report ANYONE who I find is doing something that seems dodgy, I still get a GM to show up and help when I need it.
GMs are just more restricted now so they are not allowed to do what they once where allowed.

I know that without scripters there wouldnt be resources around and such but does that make it okay?
Its not our job to decide who is not scripter nor is it our job to decide if its okay that people should report everyone who they think could be scripting.

If your not looking at your UO screen you shouldnt be able to do combat or any other action so its fine that they check up on players who are training or gathering resources. Its their job.

I would like to see more people getting taken care off while they do stuff that is against the rules.

  24. For sure you couldnt be talking about who I think you're talking about ;) rofl I agree with you completely.

I almost always craft hidden, just dont want to be bothered *shrugs* if they wanna page on me cause of that, then they can have at it.

This is the reason you find the wait list 16 deep, sigh.

I don't think that in all reality it should or is the job of the player to go around playing the role of bad cop. Now if your RPing a stalker then go at it but sometimes things like the above quote take it to far.

Goodness help the player who was training healing or spirit speak or some other skill at the same time as hitting a golem...Golems are in the game. The dev team adjusted them so as they take damage hence making it harder to just go afk on them so clearly they fit a slot in the game. If you don't like the fact that you can speed up the training don't use them but at the same time before some player goes paging a GM at the very sight of a golem at least say "Hi, I'm gonna page a GM on you because I believe that there is no way a rational person would sit at there comp beating that thing because myself as a rational person would not. I would have to run a loop or a script or something else and by that fact you must also be doing the same. Have a nice day and I hope you enjoyed your account."

You will still have players out there that will not answer you no matter what you say. I think they want to get paged on so they can come here and cry about the UO Police. Yes I have paged on players and if you do not answer then to bad, enjoy your talk with the GM.

    Keep your panties on Pacific.

The last suspected 'scriptor' I paged on was riding a hiryu and taming chickens at Jhelom Bullpen and that was before the last publish or patch that fixed a taming exploit, so it's been awhile.

You might be surprised that another player, who I call the Nicest Female Player I have met on Pac in the three years that I have played there, gave me a rune to a 'scriptor' some months back.

Since I am known to turn in suspected cheaters, and even take them to task in public on Pac, I suppose she figured I'd get the 'scriptor' taken care of.

What's amazing is once that first afk taming scriptor she gave me the rune to got picked up new taming scriptors just kept on coming day after day to script their taming safely inside the fence with the three bulls that spawn there.

So I got in the habit of checking Jhelom bullpen every now and then but I would have had no clue such scripting was occurring there had the Nicest Female on Pac not given me that rune to a 'scriptor'.

That being said I WILL ALWAYS page on the website spammers.

Now didn't you think your persistent whining and crying about how mean I am would eventually wear me down and I would finally get to the point that I just didn't give a rat's ass about anything that happens on Pac ever again?

    Didn't you???

    ????

Well all I can say is keep up the good work because you haven't succeeded yet!

I am temporarily on a break from idocing on Pac though, so I'm not running the lands and seeing all kinds of bad things going on.

That means you can cheat and be safe from me paging on you for the time being!!!

    Yippee!!

You aren't safe from other players who run the lands idocing however...

    :)

    Good luck!

To the OP, how about you NOT do it right in everyones faces? If you're going to use that cheating option, and lets face it, golem bashing is cheating they weren't designed for that...at least go off in a corner somewhere. Why does everyone have to do it in the same spot on every shard?

And on a side note, I can't WAIT until EA finally reveals how they've been tracking players that log in with xxxxUO running, and that they've finally all been banned. I"m going to laugh when all of the so-called Honest IDOC'rs suddenly disappear from the shards. And it's going to happen, and I"m going to laugh really hard...

No No golem bashing is using your imagination. the game is about imagination. Of course players can go back to getting a second account to spar with like the old days or even 8x8 boating or boat against boat training or just using advance tokens or raising skill by fighting your pet or parry with sheeps or lowering your skill with soulstones so ggs gain comes faster or see saw method or paying a website to raise your character or wow I can keep going lol.

Isn't that like saying that I'll laugh hard when the US govt finally unleash a new law that will put more than 50% of IT nerds in prison because they been ripping off the internet for a living, which in turn prevented humanity from evolving ?

Theres a nice mirror here... same situation. Just... for UO we lost millions USD, but the IT nerds we lost billions USD and with the...

federal reserve we lost trillions USD...

    Same pattern isn't it ?

Oh and BTW... I made a character just fine by actually playing the game it was fun cause I had friends back then... those people should understand how ALL truth will eventually come to be known, and even a small act in the direction of cheating harms the sandbox very much.

More people have left this game due to cheaters they can't compete with, than are currently cheating. That's always been an argument by the cheaters, "If you ban all the cheaters, there won't be anyone left"....wrong.

I used to love doing IDOCs. Until I realized I could NOT compete with the scriptors that can run past house signs at a full gallop, and then stop and turn around when their alarm goes off....or the scriptor that can sit for hours trying to lift that locked down rare,(and NO, you cant make a UOA macro that will move an object) while all I can do is wait for the house to fall..

    Definately truth...

I quit when I realised it was all interrelated. But when I learned by Designer Dragon himself that the market for duped and scripter gold and items was a MULTI-MILLION dollar business...

Well a company thinks twice before banning people who run a multi-million dollar business you know ? Especially since they're apt programmers... ever tought about hacker attacks ? Actual physical attacks ?

I mean Trammel... you know ?

    Trammel... rhymes with lol...

its all a sad joke, soon you will all realise the truth

I did kinda stop if you noticed... but it's still true.

There is a major flaw in the way this system is built...

It's like a blackhole now... keeps widening !

Golem bashing is not cheating. It is a very effective observation of the general gaming players to note that a Golem had the correct poison resist to make the bashing effective. Its been in for years and given that you don't even need a third party program to do it I would suspect its perfectly legal, sorry.

Yes every player should go the route of working through the ranks of monsters to get to 100 or greater skill but after doing it many times I just don't want to and the golem provides a great option, its not that you have to but its a good option.

This game has advanced for myself since first starting back in 98, the thrill of killing harpies or a rat or a etten is gone. I'd rather get to the point of killing the same thing that was truelly hard back then and its players.

It's been a looooong time since "working through the ranks to GM" has been relevant. Remember the Bone Wall?

You have to admit he's got a point however...

what else would the others do ?

    Put up a fight ? with pitchforks ? :D

  46. Try putting as much effort into putting pressure on EA/Mythic as you do acting as the shard sheriff. *****, moan, and complain daily on every forum you can find. Start an anti-EA blog and spread the word about their tolerance to cheating to everyone that plays any EA game. Eventually they'll get sick of the EA bashing and the bad press and do something.

Then quit paging on people that craft while hidden just because they won't stop what they're doing and say hello to you because you're sticking your nose in someone else's business.

....ya know, if people don't want to say hi, then they're most likely ingrates in real life, and if that's your attitude, to hell with you.

UO used to be about player interaction, now we get todays antisocialites.
Also note, if someones paying 12.99 a month or whatever they're monthly fee, and want to "play sheriff" , that's their option.

At least their trying to do something about it. These guys who have a serious life issue, if they have to stop and talk to a GM, for what, less than 30seconds, .....stop making yourself look like a patsy and you wouldn't have these life altering events.

Was it posted here?? How pathetic and sad someone is to have to cheat, or want to cheat? I pity those losers. I'm also willing to bet, UO would be alive and well, if all the pond scum were banned.

The issue as I see it is not that these people are trying to add value to the game. This is simply another form of griefing other players.

To the above posted no one said hi to me, either time so who's truelly the ingrate? Myself for playing the game or someone else for not even trying to contact my char?

If I page on a player and suspect that the GM has actually shown up, questioned said player I've reported and then decided that said player is following the rules of fair game play then I should decide to let the issue rest. In the original posting I stated that this was not the case as have other players noted the exact same thing, paging upon the same player over and over for something like bashing a golem is silly.

If a player is script (insert event) and a GM comes about, questions the player and lets them go by default that player must be following the rules. Is is right? Most likely not but the GM has made his/her ruling and this person is the voice of EA so again by default the rules of the game must be its ok to do this action as long as you are around to answer the GM or what ever else you have to do to avoid trouble.

I'm sorry that people see a issue with this and most of the time I would suspect that the player who is paging is correct in suspecting that something wrong is going on but in my specific case where I have just started a new char on a new shard to get a GM showing up twice in as many days is odd. Again I've never had this happen before on anyother shard I've played and truelly I take this to define what the regular players of this server are like. No new players wanted and we would like to keep this area all to our own. Good thing on the main EA pre-pub test server....sigh.

So you're doing an activity that is highly scripted in a manner that appears to be highly scripted while ignoring peeps making them think you are scripting and there's Outrage... OUTRAGE I say that someone might page a GM on you? :mf_prop:

Hmmmm...helping stop unattended macroing is not griefing, in most people's minds, anyway. YOU may not have been UMing, but we will get to that part in just a bit, so please bear with me.

This would be an oversight, if the person didn't attempt to contact your character. However, as none of us were truly there, except you...we will have to take your word for it. That's cool and all...but you can hopefully understand the trepidation of most here to say that you were right, and the Pager was wrong.

As far as I know, no tag appears over your Golem Bashing Head that tells any potential pagers that you have already been contacted by a GM, that you are REALLY there, and so, no further action needs to be taken by any other players. If that occurred, I would be able to understand your being upset.

But since there are NO tags to let folks know that a person has already called a GM, then it would stand to reason that if you are standing there bashing a Golem, that others could page on you. It certainly isn't outside the realms of expected actions, in my opinion.

I'm not saying it is the case with you, so please don't take this the wrong way...but I understand that there are Scripts that will sound an alarm when a GM arrives and talks to your character. That way, the person who may be unattended can get notice that a GM is there, and engage them in conversation.

In addition, there is no way for anyone to know, even the Pager themselves, what the outcome of the GM/Player Interaction was...so even still...no one really knows if what the person paged on was doing was legal

    The emphasis is mine.

Now...in the same paragraph YOU tell US that NORMALLY (Most Of The Time) one could assume there is an unattended person doing something that is against the TOS. Then...you tell us all that because it's YOU...doing something that many do unattended...because it's YOU and they paged once, or more than once...it's "odd".

It's not odd. Not odd at all. You started a brand new character, doing something done frequently unattended, on a new shard...and are amazed that more than one person would page on you?

That type of thinking (that folks shouldn't page on you for potentially breaking the rules) will never cease to amaze me. Even in the same breath that you are readily admitting that in MOST cases, paging would be a valid and justified action, you say they should nOT have paged on you.

In the end...if you are at your computer, and you have to press your Macro Button for Golem Bashing again (I mean really...how long, exactly, does that take you?), because someone is trying to help stop cheating in the game, I say it's a small price to pay. Even pressing it three or four times (5 seconds times four is still less than a minute even...who friggin cares?) is not going to put any noticeable dent in your training time, I am sure.

For me it would be. I am always at my computer, so even with a script running, I have zero fear of being "caught"...and I do not mind letting a GM know I am not cheating...even three or four times in a row.

    Maybe that's just me.

But I am certain you misunderstood the spirit of the page, and with an open mind and positive attitude, you may have seen it:

    Maybe...I could be wrong...but certainly maybe? :)

If that bothers you, then yes...definitely find yourself a shard where they don't disturb anyone...even those that could be, and likely are, by your own words...cheating the system.
