more from players within the game who make money selling items , because they would rather sell lesser items that have to be found than supporting players that could more easily obtain 'better' items?

    Just wondering.

No. That is not it at all. There are tons of threads and posts in the faction forums if ya want to get a gist of all the issues factions has.

I realize there are tons of threads, but wondering if others think this is a possible reason explaining why people may be so vocal about factions.

Thank you too for your own opinion!

At the possibility of over simplifying this issue I will try to make it short and sweet.

Because UO has a limited player base compared to years past players now have to play on several shards to find PvP. The factions items made this possible with out grinding. Sadly with the changes they made to faction items players have to grind to be able to keep faction items on their suit. So if you have characters on multiple shards it would be an endless cycle of farming silver to buy faction items, and there wouldn't be no time for PvP.

Faction items were, and still are, a crutch.
And your statement has other large holes in it. Do you want pvp or do you want factions? They are not the exact same thing so please do not interchange them.
There is plenty of pvp on Atlantic and a couple other shards. If you want to pvp bad enough and your shard is quiet you simply spend a bit of time gearing up on a different shard. It really does not take much time at all to pick one busy shard and get outfitted.
You do not have to play several shards unless you cant be content on one busy one. That's your choice. It has nothing to do with factions or pvp that you want to shard hop.
Long before they made these recent changes that everyone whines about factions were dead and never played as intended. For many years prior factions were nothing other than a vendor machine dispensing very nice instant gear for nothing other than gate pvp.
Btw, does anyone really believe that ADD induced shard hopping for faction gear supported pvp was ever good for the community or overall health of the game? Seriously?

the old system's time had run its course. the elimination of the points system and making the gear ethereal was just the final nail in the coffin.

I will wait for the new system. Hopefully it will be well thought out. I would love to see some king of the hill type fights or something that makes holding the towns meaningful.

I believe one of the worse problems with faction is, it split the shard and it split guilds on 2 stones.
The system need to work for the whole shard on all facets. Forcing a whole guild to join is wrong as a guild be built of all kind of playstyles, crafters, monster farmers, PvP'ers etc.
It need to work with the rule sets so the non PvP'ers in a guild can choose to be safe.

An other thing I would love to see is changes to the Tram/Fel ruleset, so a player can choose to turn Tram ruleset off for their char so they can PvP with other chars with Tram rules turned off, even when in Trammel. Turn it off should take a week, just like getting out of faction. As playing without Tram protection may increase the risk, they should gain more fame from monsters and a little increase in the value of the loot. Sure we would need a flag color for the ones with Tram rules turned off. I also think you in guild list should be able to see who is PvP+ and who is PvP-. I would also like a guildmaster to choose if the guild was Tram off, Tram on or free for the members to choose for their char.

I really feel it have to be possible remove the split between Tram and Fel and make a new system, that allow players/guilds to choose PvP or not, but builded on the good old Red vs Blue system, where reds have same rules as on Siege. The ones who choose to play with Tram rules turned on, would be safe almost everywhere.

I know it's not easy to make a system like that it will be abused if not made right. Trading between Tram on and Tram off will need a limit outside town zone, else chars with Tram on will be used as pack mules.

The population of the game is too small to make MORE areas for people to pvp in. Its hard enough finding a fight in just Fel, imagine having to roam Trammel for a fight as well?

It could make more get the taste of PvP, when they can see it's not as bad as the rumors tells. A lot would never go to Felucca to PvP but they may choose to make some chars open for PvP to get more challenge, if they also get a bonus in fame and loot.
If it's done together with a global loot fix, so overland again get used for hunting and gathering, it could bring back action around player towns and new local PvP action.
It will make the community stronger and may very well increase the count off PvP active players.

The real problem with factions wont be fixed with Vice vs Virtue lets face it.

The real problem with factions is 4 sided, meaning, if you are getting decimated in your faction you simply jump to the next faction.
This is not a popular response among pvprs with a "I will kill who I want" attitude. The solution to force it upon them with total loss of points was stupid also.

Games do not function by forcing one part of the community to have to interact with another.
Please tell me how you would like to be forced to play with people you really dislike, would it encourage you to play? Would you consider playing other games?

The real solution to factions was MUCH more simpler than everyone would like to admit.
The real solution was a 5th faction, one without a base but maybe with a place to buy armour, a faction where it didn't matter WHO you killed even your own faction.

This is what the players wanted total and utter chaos, but it doesn't make sense to the people in charge so it was never implemented.
I know pvprs and I have always heard factioners always saying "god I hate that guy" or " I wish I could kill him", and while this might be UTTERLY TERRIFYING for the people who hide in faction to faction
this truly is what the pvp community at large desires.

You get something right there. Lets the guild/alliances be the factions, the base should be the player town, the alliance lives in. Let the players in an alliance, who want to PvP turn PvP vs other alliances on. This way, the guild and alliance leaders have control over who can be in their alliance. The guild members who turn PvP on will show orange to other guild/alliances PvP players.
Drop factions items, they should not exist.

Or you could just change it back so when you kill someone of your own faction you don't lose all your faction points for it.
Another simple change that would have a very positive impact.

I would agree with every point FrejaSP makes here... It would put people out mixing together, without being afraid because you're a Tailor... Just make it consensual (with a 3 day cool-down, and yes Freja, it's 3 days) and be done with it...

How could you possibly think the population is big enough right now to think dividing the pvp players even MORE would be a good thing?

I have a character I play on every shard, and while some ideas may work on Atlantic, it wont for 80% of the rest of the shards. I don't think I am being pessimistic in my understanding of the reality of the situation.

In a lot of other MMO's you can pvp on demand with Arenas/Battlegrounds, but in UO you have to actively find your pvp yourself. That means, checking yew gate (A bad example of "pvp"), or checking every spawn location. Most of the time, all of those spawns are empty, and even IF there is someone doing one, its in 1 of 19 locations across dungeons/t2a/SA. If you are part of factions, maybe you get lucky and some guild decides to fight over sigils for some reason. 99% of the time you are resigned to the fact of going to yew gate just to pvp against someone.

Now imagine if existing pvpers could just "pvp" in trammel, with all the added benefits of the Risk/Reward that Fel has. Instead of people going to fel for those "rewards", they instead stay in trammel. So in order to find someone to pvp against, you would now have to check locations in trammel in ADDITION to all the locations in Fel.

Hopefully V/V provides a good system of dependable pvp. If it has enough reward v the risk associated with it, people will be enticed to join. If the fights like in concept are in certain locations to earn the rewards, it will be a dependable way to FIND a fight, something UO used to have in spawns. Alas, over time Spawns have lost their luster which is why V/V is much needed.

Just go to luna? theres always people there and most of it isnt gaurdzone. I dont care one way or the other. but it would be fun to be able to "turn on pvp" just for the chance to run into something rather than having to look for it. the only time i spend in fel is for spawns, farming whetstones, and yew gate crap. alot of people spend most their time in tram / islsh / malas just because thats where vendors or their house is. I think its a good idea. i wouldnt think of it as increasing the places you have to check to find pvp, but more of increasing the chances to randomly run into pvp while doing things youd be normally doing.

Factions was fine for the system it was. Could it have been better, certainly, but it was used by alot of people.

I see lots of crutch this and jumping ship that but really why is that even part of the issue? So it gave people a crutch to join, great. It allowed people to jump ship if they wanted to, so?

Faction items allowed people to join in PVP with limited expense. It gave some decent items at the trade of stat loss, which was not that big of a deal. We can all cry about how much it annoyed us if people took those items to tram but, in hindsight, the loss of PAYING players shortly after the big faction nerf was a clear indication that the system was used and enjoyed. The complete failure of the dev team to have a real handle on why people played factions was the biggest issue I had. The idea of "we are going to change the point system and nerf small shards to death" was such a joke it hurt. All of us who spent money to cross shard chars and items(which clearly was a bad idea on the players part to expect that the team would leave this little used portion of the game alone) got burnt, hard.

The worst part was this mistake was made two years ago and still nothing has been done to even attempt at getting those players back and now it's just not going to happen no matter how great the concept or execution will be.

Carry on people but at least be willing to point a finger and say "we expect a better job done by the dev team next time".
