The char is young and is directly named the site.

How hard is it to ban an IP from gamne use?

Blatant violations of TOS should not be allowed.

Also there are neumerous marked runes laying around for another site.

    sad sad sad

Probably not hard at all, but it would be even easier for the person to get a new IP and start again.

    EA can ban by IP

If the GMs will follow through

From what I understand, IP addresses are easily faked nowadays. Not to mention that most providers have a number of them they rotate through during use. Banning an IP is generally useless. And banning a series of them hits a lot more honest people than dishonest.

They will only be removed if people page on them. I saw the guy spamming on Atlantic. Then about 20 minutes later he was still there. So I sent in a harassment ticket. Ten minutes later it said a GM would be speaking with me momentarily about my page. Five seconds later he disappeared from the bank.

If you don't page on people, they won't get banned. If you don't send in bug reports, they won't get fixed.

Many people actually have a 'dynamic IP' meaning that whenever they disconnect/reconnect they will get a new IP instantly. Most wireless (3G etc) internet services work this way and some DSL plans also. People with a 'static IP' can usually just ring their ISP and ask for a new one (or hide/'fake' their IP by using proxy servers etc...).

Yeah they can IP ban all day long and the guy will be back tomorrow with one of the other 4 he purchased (if it's static) and he can proxy all day long. There are ways around everything, including the credit card if he is running a business.

At the risk of brining up "world of "warcraft" they did essentially solve this problem to a degree.
Trial accounts are unable to interact with anyone in the world unless they are spoken to first in a private tell, even then they can only reply to that 1 tell. .

to follow up on that when people spam selling gold/items on that game once they are reported by 5 different players (dont quote me on 5) they get "squelched" then teleported away.

Will this remove our problem? of course not, banning IPs might be a viable solution however I favor this method because if they wish to continue their spamming, where we can all ignore them anyway the accounts will still be banned but it will be accounts they had to pay for.

their money to pay for the account
their time to spam for their website
    our time to report
our time to watch them disappear along with their other characters.

seems like a fair tradeoff to me we spend 15 seconds to ignore and report the abuser and watch them and their account and the money paid for the account disappear.

This particular person on atlantic has been banned. Several times. He has been accused of hacking peoples accounts that log onto his site.

He always has about 800 mil in gold to sell.

I didnt know all this, and bought 300 mil from him at .50 per. Transaction went smooth. Until I found out the other stuff, I did not have a problem using him. After hearing the horror stories, I changed all UO Passwords to something you would need a crypto machine to hack, and removed him from icq.

Whether he hacks or not, I can't say personally. I gave an extra 134 month account to a friend with a legendary smith on it. It got hacked 2 weeks later. Can't say for sure it was him. But that is my impression.

You can page and send reports all day long and guess what? They will be back. When these guys make a living at UO, do you REALLY think that you calling a GM is going to stop them? That is just like brushing a fly off their shoulder. They turn to the other gazillion accounts that they can open up just for advertisement. I just see the whole thing as being stupid on their part IF they are actually banned. If you see a book on the ground, do you call a GM? Probably not. You call a GM when someone is yelling it at the bank. To me they are wasting their money on accounts... UNLESS they don't actually get banned. Do we all know for a fact that they do? I think not. Who is the person on the other side of the character selling gold for cash? For all I know IT COULD BE A GM! lol I'm not saying it is, but let's get real here and realize that we know nothing about what happens to those accounts and also realize that no matter who is selling gold, you will never stop them.

All so true. But I just liked that little sentence posted by JC. Despite that it really wouldn't hurt those players. They probably play a little game themselves to see how long they last until a GM comes :p

Well, I have added this char to my ignore list. He went away after I paged on him. An hour later he is back, but although same char name and attire, I can miracuously hear him talking again spamming he is buying gold.

Knowing that what he is doing is illegal. And Frustrated that he is getting away with it. I got his ICQ, did not go to his website, because I know that is a phishing site. I bought gold from him through Paypal.

In the ICQ Conversation, he sent this :
HIS ICQ NAME ‎(12/7/2009 4:02 PM):
    will be few minutes
HIS ICQ NAME ‎(12/7/2009 4:02 PM):
    i gotta change my ip
HIS ICQ NAME ‎(12/7/2009 4:03 PM):
    will brb
HIS ICQ NAME ‎(12/7/2009 4:03 PM):
i gotta boot my ip changer
HIS ICQ NAME ‎(12/7/2009 4:04 PM):
and login to our New Orleans server

I then sent all pertinent information to the FBI division dealing with internet crimes, such as the Paypal information, his ICQ information, links on several sites where he is discussed and how he hacks accounts, the link to this thread, and my icq chat log where he discusses using IP Changer.

I am not a victim of his, in that he did not get me to take a file, and he does not have access to my game account information. And yes, I changed passwords after dealing with him and deleted my CC information from Paypal, so he can not charge me again without my knowing about it.

In my research, I found out some rather interesting information, such as his old char name. I did this transaction for the primary purpose of obtaining information proving he is committing a crime, because I have friends who truly believe he is the one that has hacked their accounts. If you google the name he is advertising, you will see on a Pvp guilds boards what his old char name is on Atlantic. Maybe this will put an end to his cheating and hacking.

Yes, I understand that he can't get banned by IP. He is spoofing them. However this is a federal offense, as he is committing a cyber crime by spoofing IP and defrauding Mythic. I sent all information to the FBI Cyber Crimes unit, notified Paypal, and Mytic as well. If they can't ban him permanently, maybe they can arrest him and stop the insanity.

Well then, people will just have to smarten up and not buy gold from him, or better yet anyone else if they want to really be safe. In the meantime just keep adding him to your ignore list if he is really bothering you. Or move on elsewhere and just play the game like everyone else...

That is very true but what does paypal have to do with anything?
Most of the time you will get no reply or response with something like that.
He also won't get arrested because in the first place he probably isn't spoofing IP's and he's just not getting banned.

If he is changing his ip to so he can login to the game servers, he is spoofing ip's cause the ip provided by his ip should have been banned along time ago.

Hacking others accounts is a federal offense, which on the other link he is described as doing so.

Spoofing his IP to defraud Mythic to gain access to the servers after being banned would be a federal offense.

The character that he used to go by was banned years ago. Big time hacker and thief.

So yeah... I reported to the cyber crimes unit.

  33. I doubt they ban by IP.
As stated, many have dynamic IPs. If you ban a single IP then someone else on that sub IP will be banned also that plays legit.

Honestly, its annoying but if someone wants to pay for an account just to bank spam. Let em. Its more money for EA/Mythic to play with.

And I LOLed at the cyber crime thing. Thats just funny. Let me know what they say when they get back to ya. :dunce:

Unfortunately there is nothing Mythic can do about something like this. This type
This of in-game "advertising" has become extremely popular ever since WoW and has spread to virtually every online game.

The only two things that can be done are:

    • Repeatedly ban his characters
    • Stop offering trial accounts

Or, you know, people could stop wasting their money on in game gold/items and completely put these people out of business.

  37. jfkeach

    jfkeach Guest

I know three people who claim he hacked their accounts.
I know that his older char was banned for account hacking, and if you google this char's name, you will find a link to a well known guild's site from Atlantic, where they give his name. On this site it also describes how he uses trojans to hack accounts. The person that made the post on that site is a well known and trusted broker who also is well known on this site and as far as i know generally trusted.

    That is a CRIME.

Spoofing IP's so that you can log into a trial account under false pretenses is also a crime. He is not paying for these trial accounts. Therefore Mythic can prosecute as well. Theft by deception or whatever you want to call it. Its still theft. Spoofing his IP so he cant be traced goes beyone spamming at a bank. You would spoof your IP if you want to hack an account and not be traced. At least I would if I was going to hack an account.

The big deal is he is KNOWN widely to be a person that hacks other peoples accounts. ITs about much more than a spammer sitting in a bank. Yes, the word needs to get out to put him on ingore, and not to accept any file he might try to send you, and to avoid going to his website. Failing that, authorities need to know he is spoofing his IP to do his business.

The only way to rid our game of scum the Luna spammer is to stop the trial accounts but that would also hurt the influx of new peaple we have all seen. I see posts almost every day of peaple starting a new or peaple comming back, thats a great thing.

I dunno how to fix it,just wish EA would/could deal with crap like this. What pisses me off about this kind of thing is reading an old post a week or so ago about someone fighting fire with fire. Naming packies something to the effect of "so and so`s site hacked my account!" in the end it didn`t make it hard on the VIOLATOR it got a mark on a good players account. So the scum thats breaking the TOS and getting away with it can defend himself with one page to a GM about harassment. Rediculous.

THAT is BS. Instead of the strict black and white/to the letter stance BS. Those GM`s should have ignored his harassment page knowing he`s an asshat anyways. This type of BS is unacceptable to me. Since EA will do nothing to stop this RMT spammer....a couple players come up with a great idea to seriously hurt his credability...... and EA punishes those players instead of the fool causeing all this ruckus. If EA gave a damn, they would have over looked their to the letter following of the TOS and let these players make this spammers life hell.

Giant :talktothehand: to EA for this!

Oh well.... on Siege we don`t have this kind of garbage. Crap like this is one thing that helped me make my move to a player justice type of shard.

I don't want to defend him believe me but your concept is flawed. For one thing a crime where us?,china?japan?austrailia?europe?africa?pakistan? Uo is a multi nation game. I doubt you can procecute out side the country let alone the state? Trial account by false preference is not a crime either. Maybe against the TOS but nobody gonna do 10-20. IP spoofing is common I never use my real ip for anything. Second IP can be from a workplace, home, business, wireless, library, school.dorm, game shop, starbucks, hotel so even thinking about ip blocking is ridiculous as the only ip thats belongs to him is the one at home but they can use many others to play.

Hacking accounts people would need to give there account information at that website pretty idiotic if they do. Trojan will download only if you download it. Using java exploits in browsers you can download files that will download trojan usely such things get closed right away but if people are dum enough not to have protection well they gonna need more help when all there personal info is at stake and I don't think hacking uo would be his pririty better the bank accounts and identity stealing.
I don't care about him or his activities just don't want a crusade to pass new laws on the internet that don't exist and have it effect my proxies or habits forcing me to play UO from my home and nowhere else while having a microchip implanted.

Easiest solution of all. Don't bank sit, or don't go to Luna. Tada...la

  42. I wonder if something like the profanity filter could detect someone spamming a web address and maybe...turn them gray after 3 spams and then red on the fourth so that those offended could "remove" the irritating spammer. It would have to ignore (or remove) the young player status.

There is a guy I keep seeing in Haven on Atlantic spamming away his gold selling website. I've reported him and...he shows up later as the same character name but different character so he is not ignored anymore. Selling your in game stuff right out of your pack or vendor is one thing. This spamming other websites and such needs to be stopped.

Moving on to other areas to play the game like everyone else is part of the problem. This criminal is dependant on a pattern, like most, of honest players ''ignoring'' him and EA/Mythic's complacency. One could argue that EA/Mythic's lack of action is a result of their own greed, but I digress.

My hats off to the person that turned him in to the FBI etc...that is action.

By the way, for all reading this thread, that is what promotes safety in this world; a complete stranger sticking his neck out for the greater good.

This is NEW to you? Him and a few others have been around for last few months spewing their spam breaking ToS. If you try to call him out on it the "main" guy we all know who he is will even revert to 12 year old name calling via multiple characters all controlled by him at the same time to actually laugh at his own pathetic attempts at cracking a joke or even try to act like he's pvped you back in the day or that your just upset cause you just want to sell gold to "his" lol clients. Dudes a serious monkey. Just page GM's on him any and every time you see him and also add every char of his you see to your ignore list. Also add anyone you see defending him or laughing at his jokes to your ignore list as thats him as well....

Moving on an ignoring a spammer is part of the problem? Lmao.
It doesn't mean you can't page if you want to continue having fun. You do realize you can page and then move on and ignore them right? Not that it will do much good but you can still do it.

I don't know about you, but I play this game to have fun, not police people even if they are a supposed hacker. If someone annoys me I put them on ignore and move on with playing the game.

Yes, moving on and ignoring a spammer is part of the problem...for ignoring a problem does not make it go away.

If the player in discussion were simply spamming their wares at the bank, then that would be easy enough to ignore. However, in this particular situation there is a larger issue and ignorance does not make it go away.

I agree, people do not play UO to become some sort of law enforcement agent. Players should not have to police UO, but alas, it seems necessary. If not for ''word of mouth'' more people would be scammed/hacked. Whether or not you pass along the caution, of course, is your choice.

    Happy hunting.

been crazy on chessie too. I know it prob wouldn't work, but I think the best thing would be as a community to NOT buy anything from those sites that spam the bank. YOu know word of mouth. tell your friends - Hey, if you do decide to buy something, buy from the other guys. Hell spread rumors about the spammers ripping people off etc...

You'll never be able to end sites selling to people. It won't happen unless the ability to trade items/gold between people is removed. This is a fact of life.

However there is no reason to let a few really bad apples crap up the game. These are businesses. Start treating them that way. You see one spamming. send them an email and tell them you don't appreciate it and you're boycotting ever buying anything from them.
