So What Do You All Explore In This Game?

Discussion in 'UHall' started by RavenWinterHawk, Jan 13, 2011.

  1. Minus the EM Events. That isnt exporation that is following for a reward.

Minus the Champs Spawn and Similiar. That is a quest chain of steps to spawn and get a reward.

What do you all go and explore?
Im pretty done with UO, but figured Id ask, incase I am missing something.

And by the way, when you have to ask, you know the game is done for you.

Before I log into UO I log into my guild's ventrillo server. This will lead me to some exploration in the game. Often we do champs, we fight at the gate, hunt some boss moster, chit-chat, slam other guilds in gen-chat and shoot the $h!?. I don't play the game for the game I play it for the unwind after work.

oldest account is 129 months and I've yet to see the bottom of all the original dungeons, so if the need to explore arises guess I know where it'll be

I just came back to UO last night after 2 yrs away. There is a lot for me to explore.

Last night I explored the bard quests to get spellsongs. It wasn't particularly exciting. I did peacemaking on 5 mongbats...

As for things you can explore of the things I know of (still getting caught up)...

There are the ilshendar champ spawns which I assume are still not done regularly.

I'm sure you've checked out all of the SA content.

House customization... there are a lot of interesting things you can do there.

Template building... Just get a few dozen soulstones and you can explore all kinds of interesting character builds.

You can explore hunting with new pet types. Tired of the greater dragon? Try a pack of hell hounds. and so on...

You can explore new ways of building a suit. One of the most powerful suits I ever built was based on +skill items rather than resistances. It has very low resistances, but it gets me up to a total of 840 skill points, which opens all kinds of doors.

No. That is getting involved in a plot for the sake of the plot. Anyone who shows up at the EM events solely for the sake of the potential for rewards is stupid. The rewards are rare enough that one may well lose money if one is sufficiently unlucky.

The EM event rewards are great. I've made a lot of money off of them. I like getting them, I look forward to getting them, the RP of my primary character revolves a lot around selling items, including EM event items.

But the EM events on GL are well-attended and people get involved in the plot, even when there's obviously going to be no rewards.

People may be, in fact probably are, there for the rewards.

But not solely. It's pretty obvious that most get into the plot too. The ones who show up and demand rewards tend to not show up all-that-often. Which is good, as the events themselves clearly don't interest them.

No, that is the characters doing their jobs.

All people have to make a living. Some in the UO world are farmers, but there's no game mechanic to make money from farming in UO. So in terms of playing a character that makes his or her living on-stage, it's not an option. Champ Spawns "and similar" are a good way of making money, hence making a living, on-stage.

Explore implies go someplace you haven't been for the purpose of discovering things you don't know about.

Most of all maps in UO have been explored and mapped already. It would make no RP sense to explore in the conventional sense of the term. The closest you could get is "I haven't seen X yet with my own eyes. Let me go and see it as I have little else to do at the moment."

I do have a character who wanders the map periodically, looking for "his destiny." This is a fancy way of saying that I haven't figured out how to RP the character terribly well yet.

I've found things I never expected. I've met casual players. (From Stratics you would expect casual players no longer exist, but the fact is that they do.) I've ran into isolated player towns I've never heard of before. I've found museums no one's ever heard of. I've met people.

I have way more realistic hope for this game after wandering it randomly than I ever would coming to Stratics.

Given your language and tone it appears as though your actual intent is to disparage the things other players do, so that you can have more of an excuse to leave.

I explore my ability (or lack of) to do, make, get, or solo everything in the game. I've only been in Doom for 5mins, currently, fighting my way thru the hordes of players in Bedlam and Labyrinth dungeons to do monster farming and taming. I've never done a spawn, ever.Plenty left to do. I Need to explore my Bods to see how many I can discard

I think you are going to find that many folks’ responses do not have much to do with exploring the land. But more “exploring” with templates and play styles. This is the higher road to follow for an MMO I think. Diversity and challenge in landmass and diversity in skills/templates are important. But diversity in what you can do with different skills/items/pets/summons/abilities/stats is far more entertaining and give more bang for your buck in developing.

I have played many other games with vast and beautiful landscapes… far greater than UO has to offer. And though the land offers many options, in time I always get bored because there isn’t much I can do with the char I have created.

After ten years I realize I’m a sword in flesh kind of guy. I don’t care much for playing a mage or tamer. I started with a tamer and thought it was too much of a hassle setting up each fight. My pets were too clunky and too difficult to properly control. At the time there was no bonding so that was an issue as well.

I farm a lot and I’m cheap so usually I use a melee because I don’t want to waste the ammo. Melee was perfect because I could gear myself up with the best equipment I could afford/make/farm and keep powdering/repairing it as it wore. At the time “exploring” to me was figuring out the fastest way to inflict as much damage to as many specific types of beasties while taking the least damage.

With imbuing that changed a bit. Did I mention I was cheap? So I can make much better equipment with imbuing but It wears out much faster on a melee. From this I have a recent good example of “exploring” in UO. 6 months ago I built my very first bard. I was fiddling with mysticism because l liked the idea of a temporary equivalent of a greater dragon as a summon… The old “Me and my RC” commercials rattle through my head as the two of us lay waste to the creatures in the abyss: a dungeon custom built for mystic spells. Wow I’m old.

Anyway a buddy strolls by and discords a renowned I’m fighting and the thing drops fast. OK I have plenty of room on the template for music and discord so I do my homework on raising the skills. I want 120 discord but as I was nearing 90, I was starting to realize I wasn’t going to go the distance. I changed my suit an imbued two +15 disc jewels. Now me and my RC are tearing through everything a heck of a lot faster. A long time ago I raised inscription to 100 and stoned it. So I started researching slayer spell books. Now I have most of the slayers for the abyss creatures available and wow… all of the sudden I realize a spell casting template is extremely potent with the right skill/item combinations.

This is exploring to me and always has been my fascination with UO. New and re-vamped old lands will always be nice for a while. But the skill and item diversity is where the staying power in exploring springs. With that we have many more options. In many respects we are limited only by our imagination.

    Hail Friend,

I am almost exclusively an inhabitant of Baja. However, I know folks who inhabitant many, if not every, Shard. Explore new Shards?

I have Legendary Armsmen, Legendary Mage, Legendary Tamer, Legendary Paladin, Legendary Tailor, almost Legendary Blacksmith, one day will Have Legendary Artificer (Imbuer), but never made a potion nor studied Ninjitsu. Still Exploring new skills and Templates.

Have yet to Sail the new High Seas, build a Ship etc. Hope to Explore that in time.

Still have Dungeons, Champs, Peerless etc I havent done but will continue Exploring.

And I explore Players as often as possibe. Still many I have not met let alone gotten to know.

    And I've Played 160 months.

Can't wait to Explore the NEXT 160!!!

Mainly I explore the same thing I have since day 1.. new ways to create the monochrome screen :D

  14. nah not disparage.
Find out about exploring. You obviously view it differently. Thats fine.

Exploring is going out and not having everything spelled out.

For new players there is a lot of exploration.

Sounds like to me the best exploration is wandering around for PvP to see what you run into.

The other stuff is what made UO great. Lots to do.... But exploration in a land as vast as UO is a bit undersized.

  15. death is good

  16. Exploration within role play to find people is interesting. Truly you wouldnt know what you might find.

  17. That is a novel way to explore via template development.
I guess I have done much over the decade plus.

I get the crafting, template changes, role plays... might dabble again.

But after reading the response, I am not talking about something I havent done. Or something new. (Ill occupy myself with some of that)

But true exploration. Walking through the same dungeon with the outcome different then the day before.

Maybe the next expansion will address that.

Then yes. I view my in-game experience as mostly the characters' day-to-day lives. To me it isn't exploration, per se; it's Galen doing his job. That's why people like rewards, aside from those who are simply greedy of course: Because it's our characters' "working" lives we're experiencing, and people expect, and need, to get paid for our work.

Think of the property taxes on, say, an old-school tower, or an 18x18. Or if you prefer to think of it in medieval terms, think of the fees you have for some kind of right to a small property of land granted to you by the Crown. (Frankly I think it's more realistic to think in modern than medieval terms but not all agree with me.)

As to characters with a "freer" sense of time? Non-property owners?

I have two alts: Cinque the Samurai, and John the Squire.

John the Squire goes to the Abyss a lot, but that isn't exploration in your sense because he's going there as Galen's employee: "Go to Abyss. Get stuff for me. In exchange I will equip you and you get to keep a certain amount of what you find.

Cinque the Samurai wanders the realm to find his destiny and to get random gold.

Both do random Corgul runs as they come up. But again, that's not exploration by your definition. The RP purpose is to get the reward; they are acting as Galen's employees.

And then of course there is Galen. These days he's mostly trotted out for "pure" RP, for Factions, and for events.

Personally I have an obsession with bizzare / alternative templates and doing things with little to no equipment. My thief / arcanist has been everywhere in UO. My naked tamer has tamed everything as a naked tamer (except GD's, but havent tried and cant stand the darned things). I love pack hunting characters. 45 Taming, 90 Lore, 90 Vetting, 5 scorpions, and whatever other skills I fancy. Good stuff.

Currently working on a techno bard. I havent seen a proper dedicated Golem user since.... Pre tram days.... Once I have a few skills up high enough (magery for gating, tinkering to GM) ill be posting about his exploits no doubt. Wish me luck!

I get that. I've read your other posts about it. I dont really agree. I think they shouldn't renovate an old dungeon for an old player. I like that these areas are kind of boring for us old timers.

These are great places for the precious few new players to explore and learn the basics of the game. To form their own opinions at a base level. Much like we all did when we were new. Well... me anyway. We do get a bone handed to us every once in a while like saltpeter or aritfact drops.

But I wouldnt mind seeing a new dynamic dungeon or two. Problem is making it detailed enough to be worth the effort and not half ass it into 4 or 5 outcomes with a stamped reward.

I mean you cant really expect an different indiana jones like avdenture every time you visit the same place. That is sort of what em events do though.

It sounds like you are done with UO. I have always found your vendoring input to be very useful. Good luck if you decide it is time to leave.

  22. I guess another question might be better.

What MMP game has a level of exporation that I might be looking for. UO has great points, they keep me.

I suppose great graphics and wandering around with no people might fill my interest in exploration... but who to share it with if no one is around.

Any games out there active with people and have an exploration component that is not one and done or rinse and repeat? Dynamic dungeons or non-static spawns? Anything.

Might be time to play a 2nd game with UO.

Then try Second Life. The adult stuff is now tucked away on last years adult land drive thing so you dont just 'come across' the sex anymore unless your looking for it.

It has masses of landmass all generated by players, some stunning places, from futuristic lands (Blue Galaxy) to artistic renditions of RL places (Kowloon, burry creepy place) to cool bars (Blue Moon) too stage shows, race tracks, steampunk citys, under water places, FPS style PvP arenas and citys if you fancy it. Roleplay sims, avalon for fantasy, Toxian for gritty urban vampires, nekos and werewolves.

Also, you can explore these places via foot, horse, car, motorbike, flying machine, bicycle with fish scales, broomsticks, rideable flying bunnys and anything else the human imagination wants to create.

If it's still around I would sugggest giving FFXI a whirl. The game is getting old like UO. Graphics are old but still alot better. When I quit about 2 years ago there were still @250k subs. The land is vast. There are tons of quests and very well written story lines revolving around the cities and races. Crafting is a bit different but comparable to UO in originality. The job system (like the skill point system in UO) is very original and allows you to mix and match abilities.

They are also very passionate about cheating. They stay involved with the community and release quarterly reports on accounts banned and trending types of cheating taking place. I played off and on five years and never once had to use the GM paging system. But I hear they are very responsive.

You can pretty much cancel and re-activate your subs as you can UO. But their housing system is kind of instanced and does not require you keep an account active to substain. Over all a well matured game.

My biggest problem with UO (and Stratics), is NO FISHING PROFESSION FORUM.
Jade's Cook *(gm fisherman since 1997) has been trapping lobsters and crabs for the past few days and, so far, is unable to find even one CRUSTY LOBSTER for completing the quest to deliver such crustaceans, 10/10, to Trinsic Fish Monger, in his old big dragon ship, which by the way is neat for slipping in and out and around and amongst all the BIG HUGE SHIPS!!! .. but all that aside, and back to the main topic - -

In the book - Order of the Dragonfish Handbook, Part 4, by Ctp. Piddlewash about Uncommon Crustaceans, full of Captain Piddlewash's enlightening information about the Uncommon Lobsters, he writes, 'Jukas like to use the shells o' this lobster for pie crusts.'

Now surely to goodness, a simple fisherman can't be expected to enter the world of the Jukas in Illshenar and begin laying traps to catch the uncommon crusty lobster in what ever ponds of water exist where such monsters spawn!!!

I think that might explain what keeps me playing UO and enjoying UO for so many years. I'll never stop finding things to do and it is a great way to relax in the evenings or while having a coffee. UO is a unique game with potential to be great. Too COMMERCIAL right now.

PS: Has anyone out there ever found those illusive crusty lobsters?
*goes back to the ship and hits the high seas again*

I explored the land until I knew it all back to front, then used my knowledge of it to RP. Then all the RPers disappeared on Baja so I left the game. I still kind of miss it, but there's nothing left to discover so there's no real reason for me to stay.

I love to explore other player houses and player towns to see the creativity people have with decorating and customization.

I also love to explore Ilshenar and all the small abanded houses around the lands that are very cleverly designed. - I'd love to live in one!

I know it's been said here, But I would like to just add I think it's unfair to label all EM Events as 'just for a reward'.

A lot of people keep up with the UO storylines and history and some shard EMs really go to town with their own storylines.

I go to them because people are there. I would rather spend 2 hours standing about healing and rezzing people than 30 minutes solo farming. What is the point in playing an MMO if you don't play with people? :)
