Four guys, all with the same name except one, two, three, four tacked on the end. All continually recalling in and out of Yew Tram bank for at least 14 hours lifting some ore each time.
    What are they doing?

    Script mining. Report them imo.

  3. I agree, I mean you've spent over 14 hours watching them so far, why not page a GM and spend some more time on it.

If it's Fell then they could be buying from Faction vendors. I believe that Shadow Lords reset the vendors yesterday, so they were (when I checked this morning) selling ore at 5gps a pop!

Could be the faction vendors; I use em, but I tend to stick close to a bank and drop stuff right in as I buy it. It could be scripters though, it can be hard to tell. If it is, kill or page on em

PS - when stuck in the GM queue, a 12yr old is a handy thing to have about, especially if she likes filling tailor BODs. 5yr olds seem to like mining more, but hey, I'm not complaining!

It's okay they're not my kids. Been stuck at number 6 in queue since I paged, but gained .9 bowcrafting in that time.

The player checked in and noticed people were watching his operation. Was number six in queue for about 100 mins.

Anyway was nice to meet a fellow Drachenfelian and have a chat whilst waiting.

Drachs is the Scottish server. We let the Germans play here too.

Without getting this post in an uproar, I have a serious question.

Why does it matter if people script/macro to gather resources?

If it was "legal" wouldn't every player have the the ability to script if they wanted?

I know that certain programs give people an advantage in game, such as speedhacks. But macroing skills or as an example scripting mining, IMHO, doesn't affect anyone, especially if everyone can do it.

Can someone please clarify why scripting is bad? That is, other than the fact that EA says so.

You're just being facetious, and you don't say why it's bad?

So why is it bad in your mind?

If only a select few people in the game could do it, then it would be bad.

But if it was legal, and we could all do it, then how is that bad?

I will take this one on.

It's bad because honest players who actually still play the game put in the time to gather their resources honestly. They work and EARN what they have.

It's bad because it deflates the ore market and hurts players who might want to mine and earn gold by selling their ore.

It's bad because illegal programs in the past have been known to crash portions of the game or "black hole" players around them.

It's bad because a "Massive Multi-player Online Game" becomes worthless when the "Multi-player" part turns into "Multi-robot".

And finally it's bad because it violates the Terms of Service of the game. The rules are the rules. Without rules games tend to devolve and lose people. And that ENDS GAMES.

Eh I'll answer too, why not. If scripting was legal, everyone would be able to do it, so it would be fair, but it isn't legal.

Therefore it gives an advantage to players who don't mind breaking the rules. The rest of us who play by the rules have our time wasted (remember time = money, and when script harvesters create an overabundance of supply then prices go down.) When you cheat, you are wasting my game time, and time is the most precious thing we have. Someone who cheats not only steals from other people around them, but they cheat themselves out of the experience of playing the game honestly.

It takes about 20-30 minutes of buying ore to drive the price up to 30gps each (especially if you visit them with a fire beetle and packy). After that, you have to wait for the faction to reset them.

So IMO, it's not buying ore from factions.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

As I said, if it was made legal, then both people would be "honest" players.
This also doesn't stop the honest player from doing the same thing. Also it's not like it would stop the honest player from mining as much as they want.

Not sure I agree on deflating the market. Let me explain: Back in 1997 when I first started, macroing was legal. People used to macro mine all the time and there was never enough ingots around for blacksmiths. There was also a significantly larger population back then, and it didn't hurt the economy.

There are many programs that let you macro/script without it causing havoc to the EA servers.

Again, I don't think it will be as bad as you say. People who want to work the stuff themselves will, and the people who don't, wont.
In all honestly doing SoS's is way boring, let alone pointless. But to expect people to sit on a boat for the huge amount of time it takes to pull up 10 SoS's is just dumb. Yet it still doesn't stop anyone else from pulling them up without the aid of a program.

Regarding the terms and services comment: I started playing UO in 1997 when macroing and scripting was legal. So it was EA who changed the rules on me, not me on them.

Also when I first started playing UO, every single patch and game upgrade, like Samurai Empire, were supposed to be free.. THAT WAS ALSO IN THE TERMS AND SERVICES AGREEMENT!

Although I don't expect them to do it for free, and I would happily pay for upgrades if it helps keep UO going.

Point is, it's easy to say that this is allowed and that is not. But until EA figures out a way for people not to be able to script or macro, it isn't fair to the people who don't do it, when some people obviously do it all the time.

I just don't see what the big deal is. I am willing to bet that if there is a miner here, who does not script, they have no problems selling their ingots.

Oh ok I'll answer too.... It's not the scripting that is the problem...

It's the illegal 3rd party program used to create and run the script that is... which IS against the ToS and therefore makes scripting Illegal..... Whether or not your attended while you macro or not...

That is because there are so many people in Fel who script mine. All those poor miners who do it the legal way in Fel.... wait a minute... what miners in Fel? Oh you mean the 3 or 4 you may see one in a blue moon?

Personally I think that you should have to be on a faction character to buy from a faction vendor.

Not that it would stop someone from putting a char in factions just to buy the stuff.

Part of this game is the time requirements for gathering resources. A player is limited to the time they can play and by the time they are willing to spend gathering resources.

With a bot, a machine (or multiple machines) can gather resources 24/7. Never sleeping, eating, complaining, or losing patience, a bot could gather more resources than any player could ever possibly gather. Resources would lose their value since with no time requirement, they'd pretty much be free. Gold would be worthless (since gold is a resource), everyone would have uber weapons and armor (since BODs are a resource, thus Runic tools are available in unlimited amounts), and people (at least me) would become completely bored with the game since they'd have everything, and everything is worthless. Heck, I'd go back to Unreal Tournament for real PvP action.

Heh heh, nice illustration. the kicker is the follow up, "script mining is worse than killing babies" - someone is actually letting someone watch their kids; someone who thinks using programs to run toons in a game is lower on the morality scale than killing children....
Not that I advocate scripting, just the plodding search for consistency that us humans never seem to get in alignment.
I mean the obvious conclusion in consistency would be that, if our beer drinker came back from TV to find his babysitting principles actually scripting, it would be preferable to deal with them in accordance with killing them. Logic is such an anoying thing, we should all go back to religion, heh heh.

But this is what the game is today and scripting/macroing is illegal. And the % of scripters to non-scripters has to be really low.

Also, I don't know how you feel about this, but being able to only get one to two Val hammers per year properly, is beyond dumb.

EA forces people to cheat by the decisions they make regarding in game mechanics.

EA does this solely for money. the longer it takes for you to obtain, the longer you stay subscribed.

There are many reasons as to why something should or shouldn't be allowed. In the end, I believe that if something is not allowed, they should make sure there is no way to do it in game.

Now I don't play WoW and never have, so I'm not saying "this is how they do it in WoW" but in WOW can you Macro or Script? If not, then why cant EA do the same to stop people from doing it?

I hate it when i go to mine a cave and some-one recalls on top of me and starts mining without saying a word then recalls a short distance away to start again, and all i'm left with is a empty back pack on my miner, so it hurts me when I have this happen.

I watched the four people for about 5 minutes and they were not players but script's, only if i stood on their recall spot did anything change, but I was asked to move by a nice orc who was also watching the four, the only good thing about this was I met a nice fellow Drachenfels player.

The idea of making it legal and available for everyone still falls short.

"It's bad because a "Massive Multi-player Online Game" becomes worthless when the "Multi-player" part turns into "Multi-robot"." I honestly believe that.

If the ingame resource is too difficult to obtain, then the flaw falls in the boundaries of the game designer to fix, not the player. In other words, if the designers feel "X" amount of ore for "X" amount of time spent mining it is acceptable, then the game is falling into their parameters. Again, their rules, their game. If we want to play we need to try and abide by them.

If Mythic decided to let scripters run free, I think it would defeat the spirit of the game. Although, I do not know how many they actually take out nowadays anyway.

  44. Remyi

    Remyi Guest

If they allowed people to script, what would be the point of playing? You're not technically "playing" if you script. What is the point of paying to log into a game and not even play? You pay to go afk and have a program play for you. Sounds like a bad investment to me...but that's just my opinion. Scripts take out the challenge of raising skills and such, and basically make the game boring. If you want to have everything done for you, without working to get there, go play on the Test Center.

Sort of sad that the last few people paying to play this game that they all like so much, argue about how to properly play the game. Scripting is as much part of this game as gold sellers are, and has always been there in one way or another. Strangely enough, despite that fact, that one piece of elusive pixel crack still has everyone coming back. Whether they arrive at that piece of pixel crack by means of scripting, ripping people off in scams, selling gold or items, or by clicking themselves an orthopedic disease, it is insignificant. I wish more people would realize that. All of these people are players and part of the bigger economy that has allowed to grow over 11 years. Just enjoy the part you enjoy and stop being moral high riders. Corrective action should be part of the game for eggregious behaviour, just like it is now. Just don't derive any moral standing from that and feel like it is your personal duty to uphold the law. You don't call the police everytime a car passes you on the highway either... (72 mph tickets in a 70 zone, they do exist though). I personally loath pixel crack dealers far more than the occasional bot who is willing to keep his computer eyes open 23/7 to hack some trees or boink some rocks. However, I don't care if anyone asks 17 milion gp for an item. Either I go find it myself, or I just find something else. And so the ultima cookie continues to crumble. I still play the game after all these years, and do what I want to do, even if that means I am doing it in parallel to a non-communicating likely goldfarming robot.

    As said, script miners.

If GMs don't do anything, just drop a box or something on their recall spot that you always appearing at. If they really are scripting then where ever they are mining at they will be stuck. That is if you are wanting to do something to them.
And no, blocking recall spots is not illegal. Even says so under the rules :D

You and I are polar opposites. I opened my account in September of 1997 and I have been here and gone quite a bit. I have been caught once illegal macroing (locking picking where 15 hours of a loop got me 1.4 skill points in the nineties). I learned my lesson and I don't wish to lose my account.

I have played a ton of other games. There are rules in a game. Regardless of whether "it has been around since the beginning" or if you think any means justify the ends, I say cheating is cheating. You can't move a pawn in any direction you choose in chess. Why would you be able to bot or macro unattended in a game where it is stated to be against the rules?

It's a difference of opinion, respect for the game, and ideals. You have your opinion, I have mine.
