Sugestion to resurect uo.

Well i have a sugestion that would work to resurect uos playerbase. Basicly make it free to play and paying suscribers are the only ones allowed to own a house. This would bring in extreme amounts of new and old players and in long run push up the susciptions amount by far. Something like Anarchy online did and got 1 million new accounts. Just they did it with alot more restrictions where you where not alowed any expansions on free account. In uo it would be enough with "no house allowed" penalty for free accounts.

This would basicly make it alot more fun for paying customers to. Towns would become alive again and there would be players to sell your items to. It would be great.

Biggest problems with that idea are:

    - Raises bandwidth costs due to the "free accounts" accessing the game.

    - If you do not set up any payment information on an account, you could VERY EASILY allow a situation where "zombie" accounts are created to do nothing but exploit the game's resources, then hand them over to a holding account, then use another zombie account to transfer the illicit goods after they are sold.

    - It brings in no revenue to the game (which it needs to survive).

  3. Thats a great idea. I'd expand on it a little more though.

    Free accounts-
    No Housing
No Vet Rewards or Account Age
No 6th and 7th Char Slots
And find away to limit or restrict free accounts to 1-2 per household.
Also No new expansions, like 3d or SA when it comes out.

Basically if its gonna be free, you'd have to strip it down, so that people would want to pay for the accounts to get more access. But its a good idea.

Well it worked for anarchy online. They where about to shut down entire game and survived by doing this. They got tons of paying customers that way and i am pretty sure uo would to. They got tons of free promotion from gaming sites like fileplanet and gamespot by doing this.

Not alot of people would keep playing uo for free if they cant have a house. Makes the game a bit boring for most players after a while, plus if they got in to the game and saw how fun it was they would really love to own a house too and pay up for their account.

It would introduce uo to alot more people than that 14 days trial thing does right now.

Anyone that doesn't think this would be used to create an army of scripted bots is naive.

Honestly the best way for them to bring players back to paid UO is to offer the same product the freeshards offer: Classic UO.

So what if some people would be idiots and try to exploit this. It would in the longrun save the game and it would be alot more fun than it is now with 5-10 people standing infront of brittbank.

Plus this is doable, bringing old uo back is not unless they deleted everyones chars. Plus just putting up and new shard with old uo would do no **** for existing players that are in the game right now. And they even stated that its not posible to do cause they dont have old uo scripts left. For that to work they would have to make a publish that removes all patches they done in past 8 years while you are loged in to that certain server. That just does not sound as a solution to me.

New players on the free accounts would find that all of the best hunting spots are camped by scripted characters. All of the games resources would be actively scripted lowering the value. All of the games high end items would drop in value as they were collected via scripting. All of the power scrolls and other high end equipment would go up up in value as the scripters flooded the game with gold. A new player would find a game world in which it was nearly impossible to get to a competitive level in PvP and nearly impossible to aquire skills high enough to handle more than the hallway trash in most medium to high level PvM areas.

We have already seen this numerous times when free trials are released. The economy of the game is already basically comepletely at this point right now.

So what you are basicly saying that these kinda exploits allredy happen with free trials only difference would be that it would bring in actuall players this time.

The thing is that "freebie" accounts would have NOTHING to use as a punishment against the account. As it is, people banned are SUPPOSED to have their payment information blocked so they can not activate a new account (in theory). With a free account, this "block" cannot be put in place.

Get an account banned? No problem it's throw-away anyway, just start a new freebie account and keep going.

We already have people working the system with the trial accounts as it is... giving them non-expiring free accounts will not help the game in any way.

Payment information blocked? Not once in all years i played have i given any payment info to anyone, allways used gamecards. So seriosly thats a bad argument against this. Plus you said it your self. There are free accounts allredy they only last 14 days. Plus sure freebie accounts can requier your payment- account info that is not charged before you switch to pay account. If thats what you mean.

I'd rather not see free accounts.

As much as I'd like to see more people playing UO I don't think it'd be wise.

We already have poor GM service. All having free accounts would do is take more of their time to police the freebies.

It gives exploiter's accounts they don't need to worry about testing exploits on.

It would require a good amount of time for the devs to see this done and in the end not worth it for the PAYING playerbase.

Eats up our bandwidth, there's enough complaints about lag on these forums nowadays.

A few others but I've become side tracked and want to wrap this up.

Just do like WoW does and hand out tons of the free trial cards (I believe theirs is 14 days or something weird like that) If they choose to activate the account then they pay for the following month and get all the bennies. Every software store I go in to has a box of the WoW cards at the counter...even the Base Exchange on the Air Force Base I work on has them.

Thats where you are wrong, you can take a look at runescape. Game allmost as old as UO and much worse graphics than uo still they have more paying customers and much bigger playerbase than uo has now. Difference is they have free to play accounts and pay accounts with benefits like housing.

  15. Its clearly a topic of mixed feelings. In my opinion, I don't believe it would make the game better persay. The game was never built to be "free" clearly due to the way the system is designed. Free games are usually based on instances to reduce bandwith on a single server which allows thousands of players to converse in the same setting in their own "world" or instance.

I couldn't imagine what a bank would be like with over 300 people. Even for the users who are less fortunate with dial-up would probably just quit. The amount of in-game grief would certainly rise to an all time high. EA sales would probably tumble due to the amount of people who actually do play the game and can afford to live without the amenities of subscribing players that quit paying the subscription fee. Increased network traffic would certainly bring the servers down frequently if not indefinatly (if that many people can bare looking at UO). Cheating would definatly be easier than free. Nothing like selling farmed gold without a subscription fee.

So all things considered, yes there are pros to the idea and there are cons. But do the pros outweight the cons enough to justify a "free" subscription? I don't really think so. It would be fun to think about but I feel it's not in the games best interest.

A large part of that is exactly how the OLD UO used to be :) Brit bank packed to the gills. I would let em play free for 15 days or so...maybe even 30 (without having to buy the game itself as I stated above) but then make them either pay up or shut down.

One day I logged on and only the test shard was up.

"Oh well," I thought, "I'll just go there".

So I start a new character and beam to Scara Brae. And there's like ten people there with me... And I'm lagging.

"Oh well," I thought, "I'll move away from these folk and hopefully things will speed up."

In my infinite wisdom, I went to the bank... And there was at least a hundred people... And the lag increased ten fold.

I really shoulda stuck around long enough to tour Britain and Luna.

  18. How much junk was on the ground that people just put there to have room in their bank.
10 people was there at that time but how many made weapons and armor that just left what they didn't want. Got to Despise and tell me you got lag.

OK so this idea doesn't seem to be very popular. I did quite a bit of thinking about it and I would amend the OPs proposal in the following manner.

Accts are not free forever but we could greatly extend the free trial, say as far out as three to six months.

Housing:Never eligible to accept a transfer on a house. May place classic only housing of up to the 8x8 tile base(smalls). Houses must be refreshed manually. Limit boats to one per char(should be in game anyway IMHO)

Lands: Trammel ruleset areas only which are not part of the ML expansion. No library quests. If I could see an easy way to restrict the museum and zoo rewards I'd implement them as well. This lack of access to ML obviously precludes Heartwood quests.

Acct does not show an age until upgraded to paid acct in some form.
No "token" use of any kind.
No mining higher color metals or stone, no LJ of colored wood.
Characters do not receive large color, or EQ Bods for any craft skill.
Chars may not make use of power scrolls/stat scrolls.
Players may not start a new guild.

Looking at all the above I think the effort in trying to ensure that the use does not get abused is probably not cost effective long term for the game.

I will however also state that nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd. I think the base idea could have merit, but the biggest hurdle in my mind is that if we are busy trying to move forward with client improvement, yeah sorry folks, then this group would be an anchor weighing us down.

Maybe it would be more appropriate to look at this idea down the road a bit.

Hail: Want players to come back to the game? Hmmm, Maybe, just Maybe, I know this is a far out idea, but what the hell, WHY NOT JUST ASK THEM TO?
Every person who has ever played the game has their e mail on file with EA. When is the last time any of US, or anyone else got an e mail sent to an inactive account?

But I think the best idea is................ready?.....................here it comes.....................RETRO SHARD!

When Anarchy online did this they called it free 1 year trial. And they stated that they could terminate all free accounts if they noticed that it overburdens the servers. They allso stated that they could shut down offer any time when they felt they had enough of incrased playerbase.

The thinng is they gotten 1 million free accounts and more paying members than they ever had before. So they extendet it by 1 more year twice. Allso no account that where ever payed for where able to degrade to free account. So once you upgrade account there is no turning back to free account.

This would not bring me back to UO. I have moved onto other onlline games which are more modern, fun, and immersive. The things that made UO strong for a long time simply do not cut it anymore. UO has spent too much time resting on its laurels and not keeping up with the gaming industry.

If UO2 ever came out, I'd be there in a heartbeat. UO's best bet is to appeal to the vet players and do things like classic shards to attract people. New players to UO are going to get harder and harder to come by.

Than explain why runescape that has 10 times worse graphics than uo has at least 5 times more active players than uo? And by 10 times worse graphics i am refering compared to 2d client.

    UOKaiser Guest

I agree appeal to vet players but dont appeal to uohall posters as the classic shard thing is a waste it's just moving back not forward. Hell the players that want to play on a classic shard are already doing it for free why would they want to pay for it. Everyone just have to admit the players we have now are it, some do return once in a while but brand new players that stay I can pretty much count them on my hands its not gonna happen unless they made a another new game. Just got to face it these players were with are it. Everytime 1 player leaves the game it doesnt get replaced by a new player maybe a old vet returning but not a new player. Keep the game fun and dont cater to mathemethicians and people who want to spoil it for the other players cause they want only things that benefit them or are holier than thou or even the people who still things this is a mainstream game.

Though am curious are there so many people on the uo boards that actually dont play UO. I play UO everyday I get a chance but if I didnt play it I wouldnt want to bother commenting on the boards maybe it's just me but I see this alot. Not speaking about you but there are others that dont play and convince the dev to make game breaking changes I never understood that.

Oh I agree UO2 would be a game to try but don't know if I stick around economy is bad enough no need to pay for another online game.

  26. UOKaiser

As I said before its already out there for free why in the world would anybody pay to play a even older UO.

  27. UOKaiser

Maybe because they dont try to nerf I mean "balance" every single template with every patch that comes out. Also they dont cater to people who complain about everything. They also try to add feutures instead of taking them away. The free thing also works well for them.

  28. Cybrdragon

I have no idea, as I've never played that game. I would take a wild guess and think that maybe it has better gameplay. I'm not just specifically talking about graphics when I talk about other games. I just mean they are more immersive, and for me, simply more fun. It could be because I just played UO for so long that I grew bored. They may happen with other games, too. :)

  29. Cybrdragon

    Cybrdragon Guest

For the record, I am not a pvper and am not interested in a retro shard, either. At some point, later for some than others, UO just lost that cool feeling that it once had. Like I replied to the other poster, maybe it's a combination of both boredom and bad design.

I've been waiting for the first reply to me from someone asking why I would post if I don't play. I, like many others here, still maintain active accounts in the hopes that one day UO will be fun to play for me again. I figure if I'm still a playing customer, I can post about it. When I shut down my two accounts, I'll probably stop posting. This is actually the first time I've even read these boards in ages, due to receiving an email newsletter from EA about the Stygian Abyss expansion coming up. On the WoW boards, you can't post if you don't have an active account. I always thought UO should be like that, but it's not since they have no official boards, so anyone can post. I would never try to convince the devs to make game-changing decisions about a game I rarely play; though I would suggest things that might make me return to the game full-time. So for me, I consider myself a sort of part-time semi-retired UO player now. I haven't let go of it yet. I played UO for ten years. And I still spend over $300 a year for my accounts.

That's all just me and my thoughts about it. :)

    ***edit**

Just wanted to ad, my guildmates in WoW and other games keep urging me to quit "wasting my money" to keep my UO accounts open. I guess I just still have a soft spot for this game. I, like many others, keep thinking after all this time that I may one day enjoy UO again for what it was and what I can be. One day I may bring myself to let it go, or not...

Why should I pay €1 more for UO than I pay now for wow?

  31. Haris

Maybe cause wow is boring. Doesnt even feel like mmorpg. There is no actuall economi or crafting system, just some illusion of it that fools nobody. Entire game feels like fancy hack and slash game.

  32. Babble

    Babble Guest

Yes, but an updated hack & slash game with good support and almost bug free and cheaper than UO. It has better itemization, PvE, PvP and grouping.

Only from the roleplay possibilities UO wins hands down and will have a place for me.

Still have not bought any expansion since AOS as I still wait for something innovative from them.

It doesnt change the fact its a hack and slash grind from hell game. The worst part is you cant even own a house or drop anything on the ground. And all soulbound items make the trading system allmost completly worthless. And all those part of the game are kinda important for me for a game to feel like a real mmorpg.

  34. Can't be fixed, they don't care enough to fix our lag let alone keep people in game..!!! Two weeks now i've delt with this lag, I won't be renewing!
