I was looking through the BNN Archives on UOHerald earlier, and discovered that this month is the ten year anniversary of Juo'nars Invasion of Trinsic. A decade has passed since one of the most memorable events in Ultima Online History.

Are there any plans on any of the shards to commemorate this event? Are the developers or event moderators planning anything?

The Trinsic Invasion remains one of the most important events in Ultima Online History and Lore. It is to veterans what the Magincian Invasion is to most of the younger players. It was well thought out. It was well executed. It included a good storyline. And most players who were around at the time could probably tell you a story or two about what happened to them during the attack and the subsequent counterstrike.

It was the culmination of a long storyline alternatively known as the Second War of Darkness or the Revenge of the Dark Enchantress. Lady Minax, the principle antagonist of the era, sought to conquer Britannia and subjugate its citizens in retaliation for the Stranger's murder of her master and lover Mondain the Wizard (principle antagonist of the original Ultima). She recruited a series of generals including Malabelle, G'Thunk and G'Splat, Keeonean, and Juo'nar; tasking them with the destruction or subjugation of Britannia's various cities. The generals each had their various stories; Juo'nar being a villain from an earlier storyline, while Malabelle was an innocent sorceress who was being manipulated by Minax.

Trinsic, the Sentinel of the South, was the first to fall under the sway of the Dark Enchantress. I was not there; but I believe there was a whole event cycle around attempting to defend the city. But the players were meant to inevitably fail, allowing Juo'nar to move in and construct the Black Temple (still visible in the Feluccian Trinsic on all shards).

Towards the end of the War, General Dupre leads a massive counter-assault (including many of the players) in an attempt to retake the city. Juo'nar was a powerful boss that was actually controlled by a Seer (an older and much more powerful version of the event moderators we now have). Trinsic was restored and volia!

But peace was not to last. While Lord British and the Britannian Forces were winning, he decided it was better to retreat to a new (magically created) world than try to protect his people in the old one. So he created the World of Light and Virtue; otherwise known as Trammel. The Second War continues to wage in Felucca as the Factions: The True Britannians and the Council of Mages belonging to the Good Side, Minax and the Shadowlords belonging to the Evil.

There is my cliffnotes version of the Trinsic Invasion. I'm sure someone else can tell it better.

One thing that made the invasions so special (there were many invasions) was that the monsters were guided by GMs. They didn't just put a spawner into Trinsic, but created hordes of creatures and lead them towards town, while fighters grouped by the city gates preparing themselves for battle.

There were no special items or rewards. It was a lot of fun nevertheless.

We on Chesapeake were about the last to hold firm against the invasion.

As I recall, we all had serious heart-ache because the developers hadn't actually come up with what would happen if players actually held the town against the invasions. They just switched over the town to 'taken' after a server-up and our efforts were pretty much for nothing.

We had a plucky monk that held Juo'nar at bay several times, though the battle raged around him. And a lot of good defending against hordes of creatures. It was one of the most exciting fights we've had in UO.

One of the great things about it was that the story of Juo'Nar was very deep and rich. But it wasn't a story that was just written and handed to us. His story was one that was played through, in various events and history inside UO. And yet, Juo'Nar's story, for as deep as it was, was only part of a still deeper story/plot running through UO's early years.

Juo'Nar, Finth Desrin and his murdered wife Tali, The Liche Twins Lathiari and Kyrnia, Crawworth and Hartham and the Village of Paws, The FOA (started as the ZOG Cabal), Minax and all her cronies, the Black Necklace, and so much more.

"However, just as the simultaneous attacks occurred in Yew and Vesper, he was seen near Trinsic consorting with a band of orcs. The orcs soon drew the attention of the townspeople away from Juo'nar and he vanished, only to reappear later at the Shrine of Spirituality. After brutally murdering three monks, he snatched some glowing item from the ground and threw it into his backpack. He appeared ready to leave at this point, but upon seeing Eric of MiRC nearby, boldly dispatching an orc, he stopped to converse briefly. A brief transcript of that conversation is posted here:"

"Juo'nar: YOU THERE! Listen well. I have what I came for."

"Juo'nar: You're petty world of order means nothing to me now.!!"

I remember this event well on Atlantic. I was a bigger participant than I realized, now that I look back on it.

When the events were unfolding, I had no idea that the culmination was the taking of Trinsic. For awhile before that, I remember the generals, namely G'thunk and G'splat were frollicking about the world and I was trying to stop them repeatedly.

The Seers got the RP community involved pretty heavily. G'thunk & G'Splat became chummy with the prominant RP Orc guild and I remember fighting against them AND G'thunk at the same time on two separate occasions, once at the Orc Fort south of Yew (On Atlantic, in Fel, I think there is still an item pertaining to G'thunk &G'Splat at the fort), and once at the player town of Rivendell. This was back when dial-up was the prominent way to connect to the interweb machine and thusly I was killed in each engagement due to lag.

I also think by the time that Trinsic was attacked by the undead and Juo'nar, he had turned into a Lich. I remember a black Lich running around that everyone was trying to kill but he kept pretty much one-shotting people with stronge flame strikes. Again, I was mostly lagging, so I am unsure about the one-shotting thing. I was up on the top rampart of Trinsic with a bow because I knew I wouldn't be able to move :D

That was truly an invasion that required cooperation. Once the undead captured the town, nobody could just ride or run (not everyone had mounts then) into the gates. I think the only way to get inside the city was if a mage cast a gate. Folks could recall out but not in.

This was also a time when I descovered that folks weren't always fighting for the story line but their own personal gain. I was actually naive enough at this point that i ran into a building, saw someone fighting a liche, took a shot (turned out to be the kill shot), and not know why everyone was so pissed. Of course, back then only the kill shot got the fame/karma points.

Also, this would be the first and the last time in this game that I would see players form a battle line against the invading monsters. I seem to recall we formed it at the Paladin building, and the invading monsters actually came from off screen to march toward it. It was also the first and last time I've seen monsters summon EV's. That scared the hell out of me, and I fired my first two shots, then broke from the line and retreated until I was able to get the third shot off.

None of the other invasions have even come close to the details of the Trinsic one. In my opinion Trinsic remains the "gold standard" of monster invasions. The others seem to pale in comparison. However, I will yield that I missed the residents of Despise marching on Britain and only caught the tail end of the Ophidian invasion (over in tram, but a few cities in fel still had it).

Damn, nothing like typing up a nice, well worded response and just as your posting it, having your internet konk out... oh well, here goes a much smaller, and worse typed response.

I missed the trinsic invasion, and was also on a break during the Magincia invasion. Trinsic sounds like an all time high for an event.

Cal, please look at this thread!!!!! An event such as this would be a very worthwhile endeavor. It is events like this that enhance the UO community. There is nothing like a group of UOers getting together, either formally, or informally, to rally to a cause and beat back the hordes of whomever or from wherever. Especially if the outcome is not known, nor universal. Perhaps some reward for shards that successfully defend the city or reach certain "milestones" in the event.

Our militia of volunteers intercepted Minex and her army outside the gates of Trinsic in the hope of preventing her from entering the city. We were promptly annihilated and Trisic was lost. We were shut out for days before a rift appeared in a wall and we were able to re-enter.

I had a rune to a rooftop and would cautiously make my way downstairs and lure a lich from the street up to the second floor where I could get behind a table and try to keep it between us while I drove arrows into his breast until he collapsed under the weight. It was in this building that I first encounter Jo~nar. He stalked right past me as I breathlessly hoped I wasn't revealed.

Eventually a gate was provided for ghosts to tele-port to the Brit docks and warriors and mages soon begin showing up to join the few trying to retake the city. Reds and blues fought side by side and died together. The city was in chaos while the battle raged against the endless stream of undead roaming the streets. Jo~nar himself taunted us from the rooftops as he hurled deadly spells at waves of defenders. It was a time that tested the best and discouraged the rest.

  20. I remember the first I heard of it was when my smith recalled into town and was instantly killed by something and lagggggg. My guild went in together and I lagged so badly I could barely walk. I tired to help out by casting greater heal and targeting health bars but it was kind of pointless. Later I did get to join in a battle that wasn't too much of lag fest but for the most part I could do nothing during that event.

i remember back then i was playing pretty much exclusively at night time.

so the fights where pretty mean and dirty.

we would get 4 or 5 people who where rolling around to band together and we would try to make a dent on the invasion.

and wow, could those GM operated Lich Lord haul AZZ!!!!

they where the very first speed hackers in the game.
    PERIOD!

wow was that a lot of fun.
bring back a lot of good memories.

i think i was a Monk back then.
healing, anat, mace, tactics and peace/music.
    and enticement?

i should yank the hard drive out of my old computers that are out in the garage and get one of those multi hard drive thingys so i can get old screen shots to post for old stuff like that.

I remember this event well, I tried vainly to wander around and scavenge gold from the liche corpses that were dead, and kill off a few if I could. I died lots of times to liches nothing like seeing a screenful's worth of flame strikes kill you all at once!

I also remember anxiously waiting for the dial-up modem to connect, back then speed was around 28k although your actual speed would vary a lot depending on line condition and a whole lot of factors including which ISP you were connecting through.

It was actually possible, on my home shard Oceania, to lag and die, get ressed, die, repeatedly, and wonder why a corpse seemed to be following your ghost around. Oh the fun of recovering your gear off the monster corpse, this was way back before insurance or quick-looting was introduced.

On another note, you have discovered the reason that Trammel came into existence, it was much more than just a facet where people could hunt without getting PK'ed, it was a facet where people could cooperate without having to be forced into a relationship with someone they didn't really like. Reds could make a blue and hang out at WBB and sell stuff back to blues that had lost their valuable equipment.

There is much more to tell, but to do that would take another lifetime. ;) Play well, my friend, and help those in need and you will be rewarded by those who would do the same for you in your time of need!

Fond memories of this event......although the lag was incredible.

People who complain about lag at today's events have NO IDEA what true lag was :)--Sometimes it took 5-10 minutes to move a screen :)

BEST event ever! I think Trinsic was the first sighting of the 'rotting corpse'
To give some perspective wearing armor, (Can't remember what my AR rating was)
at the time they would hit for 60 pts damage. Max you could have was 100.

    Hail Britainnians,

I remember those dark nights well. I lived in the outskirts of Trinsic. I was a Grandmaster Armsman, Mage, and Healer in those days. I was not yet 3 years old as Lord British reckoned time. I was an Officer in the Knights of Virtue. Magical and mystical forces made walking a great effort, let alone combat. The evil hordes seemed endless. Few places of safety existed within the walls of Trinsic. Only the effects of the Gem of Immortality permitted any to survive. At days or nights end I would almost literally crawl to my 7 x 7 room, yeah my Home in those days, nestled near the Mountain face west of Trinsic.

Many fought valiantly, seemingly for naught. Many avoided the invaded Towns at all cost. Some departed our world never to return. Some profited, tho most lost much, and many lost all they had worked for.

Despite all the tragedy and loss, it was a War worthy of remembering. Those who fought with no thought of giving quarter are worthy of our remembrance and Honor!

No one I knew took anything they didn't want to lose to those events. That was just asking for it to be taken. And the good thing about it was that GM armor and power weapons were good enough and easy enough to replace while also quite affordable. So, while you tried to get it back, if you didn't it wasn't a big deal. And the scoundrels wouldn't risk it for that, they wanted to stay alive for a chance at something better even if it were loot from the mobs of evil spawn.

I made so many good friendships on Great Lakes during those battles.. standing tall on the bridge holding the Trinsic gate...or trying to. So many interesting conversations... So many deaths...Waiting in anticipation for the next battle. Brave warriors were we in our what now would be considered newbie armor. And not one person asking 'Did you get anything' or complaining they had not. We did it because it was exciting and fun. Plain and simple.

Standing on the roof of the Glow bank chatting with some friends and suddenly we were swarmed out of nowhere by hundreds of... my memory fails me.. evil mages? Orcs? Lizardmen? No one made it out alive.

There was no chance of getting to the bodies to get stuff back before they decayed and there was no such thing as insurance. It was part of the game that you would die, you would lose stuff, you would get rez'd. You would find a blacksmith who you would pay to make you more armor and weapons. And you would wait and talk while they built your armor.

And I STILL haven't forgiven Poison Ivy for stealing my best sword.. a power weapon from my backpack while I battled!! *curses*

    Good times. Good times....

No I think you pretty much got it. Thanks for reminding me of the night I was screaming at my computer, watching my screen freeze up over and over. *laughs* It was quite amazing though. I have always been a lousy fighter, preferring to arrange my house with furniture, plant flowers, and keep my friends alive while they fought (in the early days). So I didn't stand a chance. But I was quite interested in the story and what was happening. And for the record, I was terrified to go back to Trinsic after that. :sad3:

  40. Question about this event as it seems I have my Trinsic battles mixed up. Is this the Battle of Trinsic where there were regs in chests that began appearing around the lands, and we the people had to protect them from being captured? I believe it was regs for the spell Armageddon. I know we had a large group of us protecting the chests for many days. Crafters were helping by making walls of chests. I was a lumberjack/swordsman at the time, and chopped alot of wood to fill the chests, so they were to heavy to move. I seem to remember the attack happening during a monday afternoon, after we had guarded all weekemd, some people being awake for 40+ hours, and then mad that it happend while they were at work.

Was this the battle that maybe created the Lost lands? since it seems this was a completly different sounding battle.

Felinious, no. What you are thinking I think was the first happenings with Juo'Nar when he was still a man, when Orcs killed Finth Desrin's wife Tali and took some jewelry while Juo'Nar killed the 3 monks at the Shrine of Spirituality and took some item of great power (what I believe was the "Black Necklace"). Juo'Nar was killed at his childhood home in Ocllo, and his body mysteriously disappeared.

After that came the Chests, the reagent being Blackrock, then the casting of the spell of Armageddon by the FOA which opened the caves to the Lost Lands.

Then, after that, came Juo'Nar's return as a Liche and one of Minax's generals, attacking Trinsic in this event.

Lots of other stuff in between all that too. Great history. But memory serves me poorly, and I had to look up some of this to get the timeline right.

I'm sure I'm just repeating what has already been said, but that definitely ranks up there as one of my very favourite UO memories. And yes, that was the first sighting of rotting corpses and they were death on a stick back then. That was back when high level poison could and would kill you all by itself, and quickly.

  44. heh, yeah, I remember the trinsic invasion. The first time I ever fought a rotting corpse too. I was like "Hey, a green zombie! Hes mine!" a short scuffle later and I was dead. Hit me with deadly poison. Yeah, that was a fun time. Back when they kept things interesting.

    Now a days......not so much.....

Also, thanks to Beefsupreme for the screenshots. Brought back a lot of great memories.
