Thinking Of A Change In Venue

Discussion in 'UO Siege Perilous' started by Guest, Feb 28, 2006.

Hello Siege,

I currently play Catskills but Im strongly considering expanding my venue by creating a char here. My char of choice would be a craftsman or craftswoman if you will [IMG]. My questions is..would this be a viable char to have here? Also what sort of template would you suggest??

Thanks in advance

2. Guest

Guest Guest

Yes. A craftswoman is a viable template here.
Most of us run around in GM Barbed suits or enhanced suits from loot.
Since there is only one character, not everyone has a "mule".
You cannot sell to NPC's and buying items from them is a lot more expensive than buying from your fellow Siege players.

If you decide to come to Siege, and I hope you do, check out the stickied threads above for more info on our shard...and please join the NEW guild for your 1st thirty days here.

Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.

3. I completely agree with Fab.

Crafter very viable. I'd go Tailoring over Smith though. [IMG]

Other than that, play what you enjoy.

Lotta archers currently, so fletching and LJ might be advantageous. . .

A good way to get started with some gold here is to shear sheep and make bolts of cloth to sell to players.

BTW, avoid Luna as much as possible. [IMG]

<3 for Crafters!!! No insurance on Siege... so you will be MORE than a welcome addition.. especially to those of us who blow through 4+ suits of armor on any given evening. [IMG]

6. Good template would probly b:
Alchemist, Tailoring, LJ, carpentry, Fletching, blacksmith, mining. Dunno tho im not much of a mule.

Hail mi'lady..

I am a Catskills refugee as well, welcome to your new home. As you can see, you will find many willing to help here. If you need anything, add me to the list of those who are there for people seeking a new life, or undeath... *grins*

If you happen to enjoy RP, we can also help you there, even if you prefer to be one of those *spits* good guys..

Best of luck to you,

Thank you to everyone for the replies of advice and welcomes. Ive been scratch'n down skills mixed and matched to see what I can come up with. I noticed that 45 magery skill is needed to use gate scrolls, that sounds good.
And from what Ive read having a fighting skill of some sorts would most definately be a good idea. And I guess it would be a good idea to join NEW for the first 30 days till I can get my feet under me a bit. I really have no idea yet where I will go from there as far as guilds are concerned, but I will keep everyone in mind. As far as role playing is concerned, I have done so in the past, I may be a tad rusty but Im sure I could manage. And Im sure I will take on the roll of one of those "good" girls. Hmmm how does that go???

When she was good she was very very good
But when she was bad she was better [IMG]

Hope the above didn't offend anyone

You will find some great RP guilds on this shard.
Just dont be afraid to die and get looted... its all part of the experiance.
At first it might seem horrible, but after you have been here awhile, you will see that death is ok.
Again, if you need anything, dont hesitate to PM me or come here and post.

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but here goes anyway..... Welcome, Dutchess! I hope you enjoy your stay here, and hope to see you in game soon. There is just one thing I must warn you about, I strongly suggest you train your magery skill, to use for traveling purposes. Some of us in this community feel very strongly against the ease, and use of the public moongates, and it is punishable by death. And violators of this law, will be dealt with accordingly. Well, aside from that, enjoy your stay, and if you need help with anything, don't hesitate to pm me, or anyone else on this board. Good Luck!

As a crafter, having a fighting skill would deffinately come in handy, if for nothing
else than resourses. Magery is a good choise, but you might want to go a bit
higher than 45 if you'll want to be able to do more than gate off scrolls. If you
don't want to take Magery any higher, I would suggest also picking up
Spellweaving, and beg, borrow or steal a "Natures Furry" scroll to put in your
book. At 40 SW, you'll be able to cast NF without fail, and this spell is a resourse
gatherer's best friend. You can easily drop anything up to Drakes, and if you
have a large Mana Pool (100 or better), or good mana regen, Hiryus or Dragons
with little difficulty.

Dutchess,

Play what you like, and/or are comfortable with starting out. Remember that when you hit 70 in any skill you will be in RoT, (read the FAQ for the details) so while it will take a while, you won't be investing horrendous amounts of expensive resources to get your skills to the desired endpoint. And while you are doing so, be sure to find some people you enjoy playing with on Siege. That will ensure more fun, and good game experiences, than any template in my opinion.

-Skylark

P.S. be very careful of what you say around Castor - he is delicate, and has a very weak heart [IMG]

LOL, at least there is a sense of humor here. Dont get me wrong there are a many of great people I have met on Cats and also Lake Superior (I was there at one time to - long time ago) but there just seems to be alot of stuffed shirts anymore. I dont know if it's the lack of needing other people that has caused it or what.

Oh and I read in the sticky that choosing a good name for a char here means alot to, and I have decided on one - "Satin"

I know they laugh a lot, they seem very happy to me every time i see them, of course a 140 point armour ignore soon puts that to rights...

My crafter has no fighting skill at all either. He walks around in a sleeveless shirt, with visibly no armor, so if anyone chooses to attack him, he is dead, plain as that.

I think magery is useful though, when you buy and sell stuff you want to go to places quick. Also the magery enables you to use a mage weapon, that is useful so you don't show up at your client with a rat biting your foot over and over again.

If you can afford a couple of soulstones, invest in hiding too.

Kind regards

Well Satin, you may be right... I think the reason why we have a sense of humor is because we have to interact with one another.
We're a smaller community here on Siege and everyone pretty much knows one another. You are not a nameless face on this shard.

I've had a home on Catskills since '99 or so...quite near Kinship, actually.

I spent quite a bit of time there over the years, but never did seem to be capable of breaking through the stuffed shirt barrier. Same with the forum. :-(

I finally gave up and rarely visit my house there anymore. It's alright, though. Lots more fun here (and on Sonoma :)

Love? Nay, but we do remember what it feels like. We do still hate, with even more passion than mortals are capable of, and we also lust for all things arcane and powerful. The two emotions are quite potent, and for ones wihout carnal urges, they are a perfectly acceptable substitute for love.

Sadly, I had no choice in the matter of my downfall, as Minax forced my hand. However, it would be ill-advised for you to preach that malarky to our loyal followers who have yet to undergo the conversion.

A crafter is very viable here on Siege.

I do not use soul stones to me it is part of the larger issue of a lost and ruined Ultima Online. I make characters with set skills or templates to play a role I create for them, and they remain as I envisioned them or wanted them to become. I may change out one skill for another but it wont go on some soul stone. . one skill maybe is dropped so another skill may rise, old school style changing no use of soul stones, if I decide to change the template ever.

My template is pretty crafter basic.

100 mining *for granite and or ore* I don't blacksmith
100 lumberjacking
120 tailoring
100 carpentry
100 tinkering

So that is 520 points right there used up
I have some hiding and magery to get around with most of my other point spread

.
From time to time I will lower something 45.0 points, to temporarily up music for making bardic instruments ... I make a lot for me vendors, then down turn that music skill again.

Oh yeh since I do live in Wintermoor, I sport an awesome.. 2.0 archery to off the lil ice snakes, that just annoy me out there ! [IMG] I could just sic my beetle on em but I dont want to strain him or nothing. [IMG] YES 2.0 archery hehe !!

I have vendors primary items are carpentry, tinkering, repairs, and leather armors sold in separate pieces not sets so folks can do their own mix and matching of doing that math of %%%%% of whatever resists they might be into. I dont have runic sewing kits so I try to get higher cold resists on the leather items if the gods permit.

I have an archer that can off lizard men etc. if I want spined leather or better but sometimes it just easier to buy the hides to make some armor which I sell pretty cheap. Most of my tailoring though is reserved for sewing for my guildmates that DO pvp and pvm out there.

I came here to craft in 2004. Chesapeake is full of insurance and multiple accounted players all having every template they wish on their own docket. I needed to be needed somewhere as a crafter and chose.........Siege Perilous.

Dying does not bother me, temporary moments of gray on a normally hectic crafting busy day.....so death meh big hairy deal. sometimes some of my best sales happen when I talk to my killer or fix their armor for em, after they dirtnap and res. me. [IMG]

One character per acct. is all many will have even if multiple accounts here maybe they have a pvper and next acct a tamer, etc. thus we are not overdosed yet on crafters and there is no stinkin insurance here, thus we can always use more crafters on Siege ! [IMG]

ye will have to make a choice to be human or elf crafer. I am human and figure I will remain that way due to my Miranda the crafter as being mega strong ! I like her str. [IMG] When they invent the expansion for pixies ..then I will change till then I am no elf.

40. Welcome!

My only crafting skill is that of a humble scribe.
*looks around, waits for laughter to stop*
All right - a not so humble scribe.

But, that one bit of crafting alone has been enough for me to work my way up from a tiny 7x7 house, to a 10x7, to a 13x13 to an 18x18 to taking on a second account just to 'run' the shop!

(yes, there are other vendors in my shop, but they're nearly all Blind Otto's ones)

Empty runebooks, BOD books, and various scrolls sell well all year long.
For scrolls, I find gate scrolls, mark scrolls and resurrection scrolls sell the best, with summon earth eles, greater heal and arch cure not too far behind.

Full spellbooks do sell - but it depends on the Siege 'scene'. If there's a major expansion, or a major patch (such as when the PBD situation was attended to), lot of people show up, many of them mages and necros, wanting full books.

Scribe-made spellbooks with properties don't sell that well. Given the choice between a ring with, say, FCR2, Magery +12 and LMC 5, and a book with identical properties, the ring will sell LONG before the book, and for a far higher price.

But - that's just inscription. For the bigger craft picture, speak to the ones who live, sleep and breathe it, like Miranda, Blind Otto, Maleeka and so on.

Right now, the 'get rich quick' skill is lumberjacking - no question about it.

But, do join up with NEW if you haven't already - it's well worth the month.

I currently use the following crafter

120 smith
120 Tailor
100 Tinker
100 Carpenter
100 LJ
45 music
65 mage

and some other odds and ends what I cant do seems kind of important and wish I had

Glassblowing/Alchemy
Scribe

As for my crafting I seem to do no business at all so I folded shop and just make for friends and myself.

Interesting enough I have been giving a scribe and alchemist a thought as well. In all actuality there are lots of crafting skills to choose from.

Smithy - Tailor - Mining - Fletching - LumberJacking - Alchemy - Cooking - Inscription - Carpentary - Tinkering in a way even Fishing is a resource skill (dont think I missed any) One thing for sure, it would seem as though chooing wisely is a good idea.

Oh and CheapSuit - your name says to me that you aren't a "stuff" person you just get out there and play

Just guessing ..other than Bea and maybe a few others there may be less scribes on Siege *that actually sell their wares* than many other craft artsy skills.

My second crafter, Hughes of Gray, is the GM alchemist, fisherman, chef, with very low scribing. I am so busy as it is with Miranda I just never have the time to up Hughes' scribing and after blowing all the time and regs to gm his alchemy..I don't even sell the stuff on any vendors. At 9k or even 6k a pop per keg that is higher fees to pay the vendors, than even add on deeds of carpentry would be for me ..if something doesnt sell that is. So I do not normally have an alchemist vendor.

I would like to up his scribing but ..........one, I have no time, two did that on chesapeake and I really really dont want to go train to repeat all of it again.

I would rather up his fishing skill which I yet hope to find the time to do for him. [IMG]

I do use him for making alchemy for myself and more so basically for NEW guild, since they cant afford to buy much regs at a time nor full made kegs and some wish to become poisoners, so if they can get the shade, I will always be there for them, to mix them the various levels of poisons that they need as their skill ups. . bout all I use Hughes for with his alchemy is for NEW guild, and I needed the alchemy originally to grow my own first plants on Siege so I put the skill on an alt Hughes, since my main on Siege, Miranda had no room for the skill.

I myself oft times find it hard to find gate scrolls to buy, and wish I had upped Hughes scribing but meh...2 more points of magery or so I will not need the darn fool gate scrolls on my Miranda ever again, anyhow. [IMG]

But aye with this elf expansion there are so many many diverse ways to go with a brand newly made character..but what is most important is that it becomes a character you like to play ........so be whatever you want to like or wish to become here and you will have fun ! [IMG]

The type of chars I have played the most and have one on both LS and Cats are a Tamer & a NoxMage

Thing is I dont know I could ever stand training taming or poisoning ever again, those 2 skills are tear your hair out work even on a trammy shard.

I also have mules, although they are never needed anywhere anymore - with the exception of here and Mugen of coarse. I really think being a humble mule type person will be a nice change. For certain Im not affraid of the work & dedication it will take here.

Dutchess.. while poisoning is still a pain in the arse to train.. the bright side is that once you hit 70, you're in RoT and need only use a single pot every 5, 10 or 15 mins for a gain and thus saving you millions in GP kegs. Same goes of other resource intensive skills as well. [IMG]

Hail, and welcome!

Crafting is most certainly alive and well here - as you have no doubt gathered from all the replies you have already received!

I would imagine that right this moment, you have your basic range of learning, no soulstones, and no fragments here on Siege. That's a good thing. It makes you think more carefully before committing to a skill.

Now, while I DO have a fair number of the horrid glowing things, the only thing I've truly used them for is to make myself more effective on the battlefield. Well... as effective as a blind man can be, on the battlefield.
But, before they came along, this was my template for years on Siege.

100 Mining, and +5 gloves
100(120) Blacksmithing - it's a lot easier to get 120 smith scrolls these days than back then!
100(120) Tailoring - see Blacksmithing
100 Tinkering
100 Hiding
100 Magery
60 Meditation

As my account aged, the extra points went into med and magery.
Like that, I made a fair amount of money, took part in several champ spawns (I think the main reason I survived most of the time was that everyone was too busy laughing at a blind blacksmith trying to do a champ spawn, and simply forgot to kill me), and killed more than a small handful of paragons when they started popping up near my favorite mining spots.

These days, I've added carpentry, fishing, lumberjacking, poisoning, and a fair number of skills that not only mean that people don't forget to try to kill me, they actually have to work for their kill. *waves to Idico*

I can recommend templates to you until I'm blue in the face - but the key thing is, what do you want?

Do you want to get rich? Do you want to have fun? Do you aim to have a vendor house in every town one day, and have your 'brand name' on every item on Siege? Do you want to roleplay a humble village crafter, or a big town wheeling dealing businesswoman?

So - as a very long winded answer to your question - yes, crafting's very viable here on Siege - even for a blacksmith (*pricks finger on 900000th shuriken*) . But as far as recommending a template goes - what do YOU want to do with your crafter?
