If you are running Windows 7 and the classic client and are experiencing sluggishness that resembles lag, but it runs fine over the same connection on a different computer with older operating system try running in 98/Me compatibility mode. I made the change this morning and the results were astonishing. This will cause the game to look for your chracter settings in a different location so don't freak out when your desktop settings all disappear. Just copy them from the current location to Public Documents\EA Games\Ultima Online Legacy\User Data\yourUoaccountname\shardname\toonname.

The classic client was running just like the enhanced client for me before I made this change. I think now I may toy with the enhanced client and see if I can make it better. Is the enhanced client supposed to be 98 compatible or was it only XP and later?

I am a UOA user and this has no effect on UOA.

What to run in compatibility mode if using UOA? UOA itself or what?

I have uoassist.exe and client.exe both set to run as admin and in 98 mode. But uoassist also seemed to work fine in normal windows 7 mode with run as admin on.

You set the properties on the icon, right click on the shortcut for UO and UOAssist, select Properties, and then go to the Compatibility tab. Personally, I only had to set both to run as Administrator, and I get blazing performance on a Laptop. And not really a great laptop either.

Set your number of houses to cache down a bit, but not all the way. That all I did. And I can keep up with anyone on game.
