To the DEVS: An idea to get people interested in PVP

Discussion in 'UHall' started by BeefSupreme, Apr 13, 2010.

    How about this....

Have an 'arena' area or maybe even a new small landmass or island, whatever.

Recall here, enter here etc. and everyone is fair game. No murder counts.

Die and you lose nothing. Not insurance money, items, gold etc.

No ressing needed. 'Respawn' in 15 seconds, at some random or maybe even
designated area. fully healed and dressed etc ready to train some more.

Basically a like a multiplayer FPS.

newbies and returning vets can practice and get decent at fighting others again and ready to jump into the real PVP for items, gold, scrolls.

More and more people would be less afraid to venture to Felucca, champ spawns,
    Harrower etc.

What do you people think? I'm sure there would be those who wouldn't want to PVP anywhere else, but so what. Those people would never make the leap to Felucca anyway
    so no big deal.

Thoughts? Other ideas/expansions on this one?

In theory, it sounds like something UO could use. However, my gut tells me that it would be immediately overrun with people whose primary interest is proving how superior they are to everyone else and who have no interest in teaching anyone else anything but what it feels like to be constantly dead and ground into the dirt.

It might be more appealing to many if there was a place where you could go to "sign up" for one-on-one or "small group" PvP encounters with the same conditions regarding insurance, etc. and where you would know in advance who you will be up against.

In a lot of ways, this would mirror what ought to be happening now within guilds where more experienced members take the less experienced members aside to help them with training and/or where two guilds engage in guild warfare for fun and practice. As a result, I'm not sure it's really necessary to build something new. Maybe what would work better in the long run would be better tools for guild and alliance leaders so they could invite experienced PvPers who enjoy training others on how to PvP into their guilds and alliances. Some of these tools might include the following: (1) the ability to "flip a switch" to enable or disable the ability for the victor in a fight to loot guild/alliance mate corpses; (2) the ability to determine if the victor will receive gold for kills; and (3) reports for keeping track of fights and kills, the primary skills of the parties involved in a competition, whether pets/summons were used, etc. I think many people just starting out in PvP might be more comfortable with a more private or controlled environment for their first forays into PvP.

I like tinas ideas as well,
but it still does require planning and other agreeable
people. What I'm after is something that a guy can
log on, and recall to and go at it immediately.

Even just to try a new suit or strategy or template.

PvP will never likely "work" on any game, so long as people take it personally.

...and there lies the sum of all problems relating to PvP in any gaming world.

What ever happened to playing a "game"? ;)

    not bad your idia ;)

    How about that:

    -no cheating
    -no speedhacking
    -no trashtalk
    -no scamming
    -no 3v1 ambushes
-no carrots for luring people in pvp zones

This is an awesome idea. There would need to be rules of course. Such as battle consent. To prevent people from attacking everyone and people from hogging the arena.

I tend to think as you do ... I believe that good dueling (arena) system allowing for 1:1 training etc and with the no insurance, no loss rules would be better.

in the beginning of my uo playing i did pvp...
till the day i heard about this "heavy ou " prog wich almost all would use..
"friends " told me i have to use this or i could not stand a fight....

i hate cheating and cheater so i left the crime-scene

felucca today is what the bad boys did....empty.....
  13. BeefSupreme

    BeefSupreme Guest

How about no rules? if you enter the arena, or 'facet' thats your consent.

Though because there would be some sort of entrance area, when you enter you are automatically teleported to a random starting point?

I'm thinking of things like in FPS games, to avoid things like camping spawn points etc.

If you have to wait for someone to click 'yes lets fight' everytime you attack someone it kinda ruins the training aspect, since there is no such consent in Felucca.

It's all good ideas though! Hope the DEVS do read this and think a bit about it...

Of course it would have to be named the "Beef Arena" :)

That used to be in the game. It was called a Test Center. Then they made changes to housing rules and it drove everyone away.

PVP would be 1000% more interesting if they removed the private housing barrier. Then you could actually fight people again.

    revert AoS.
  16. Stupid Miner

    Stupid Miner Guest

    Im for this.

Anyone who's PvPed knows dueling is a completely different PvP dynamic than what's currently available.
Factions is good for group fighting, Raiding/Defending.
Champ spawns are a miniature version of factions, where the defenders are put a disadvantage to start with (being tied up with the spawn)
Other Fel PvP, tends to be free-for-all, best example being Yew gate.

There's nowhere in fel that you can actually get consensual PvP. Only way to do that is if someone agrees to fight with you, but they have no reason to follow through with their agreement.
There's nowhere in Fel currently for organized 1v1 combat or small group vs group.
The best you can get in Fel for 1v1 typically consists of a lot of running around, fleeing and avoiding combat.
    No place for "honorable" combat.
  17. BeefSupreme

    BeefSupreme Guest

Yea true. But even with the old test center, you'd get looted by people just being jerks and then have to go waste time creating some more armor/weaps.
I want something that I can log on, play 10 minutes kill 10 people, be killed 20 times and then go to bed. Or play there for 5 hours. Whatever someone wants.

I'm looking to kinda recreate the old brit cemetary 'server wars' except 24/7.
  18. That isn't a bad idea at all. I would try it more even though people would laugh at me and say awful things (amazing what people will say to a stranger)

If you could just have an auto mute for all people you are pvping, I probably would be more likely to pvp also.

People already have what they need to test PvP. Guild wars. Fight amongst your own guildmates for fun, or war people you know for fun. Can even do this in the safety of trammel, luna, etc.

I'd almost consider breaking my old PvP char out if the setting was actually a fair (as in true 1v1, 2v2) duels, vs what currently exists.

Note I said almost. My original char (Random - some may remember him, but then again, maybe not) was a true 7x GM warrior. Anatomy. Healing. Parry. Tactics. Swords. Macing. Magic Resist.

It's not that I chose to *not adapt* and *change*. It's that I *CHOOSE* to keep a pure character as just that - pure. Not some super-hybrid combination of things that shouldn't even exist.

It's funny, in a twisted, sick kind of way. I have logged him in 3 times since 2001 - all to move him to new housing. He's never had new armor since AoS. Nor new weapons... so I decided to log him earlier today, just to compare what he has on from the THEN, as compared to the NOW.

6 pieces of double exceptional leather armor... all garbage. 7 double exceptional weapons in his pack, including 2 dp katanas (dueling mages was always fun - cast through THAT...) - otherwise, garbage.

Sure, I could always regear him. It would be a drop in the bucket just using what I already have in stock for supplies. But, sadly, he is the ONLY link I still have to what was, in many peoples opinions, the best of times for UO - pre-AoS. And I have no desire to rebuild a different character. Random was my PvP toon - and because of that, PvP in UO will be just like Random is as an effective character - a distant memory of a far better time.

This would really work if you set up some kind of wager system, or tournament ladder.

Now don't jump all over a wager system. Obviously if you are dumb enough to wager an arty or a ton of gold and someone games/scams the system that's mostly your fault for putting up that much loot.

But, I think it would be fun to "bet" someone 10k on a duel and let the system handle it.

Then you want to go play an FPS.

This is a MMO. UO already has a vastly lower get-in-action time when compared to other games. I can already login and recall directly into a fight (as long as I logged out already prepared). They can't make it any faster.

I don't think the idea of the OP would work. Not that it would be overrun by braggers, but no one will use it without there being rewards for PvP. And introducing some for arenas would totally screw up UO.

If you want to train you PvP skills, just get into a guild. Guildmates can fight each other everywhere without repercussions.

Rewards....can we be a little bit more pathetic? The typical, "what do I get" attitude. The playerbase that needs a reward to do anything in UO, needs to see a shrink in real life....obviously, somethings missing in reality, and they need UO's pixels to fill that sad void. Maybe mommy&daddy din't give the love, who knows.

Honor and self bragging rights is the way to go. Climb the ladder of UO's best fighter.....will the cheaters exist?? Always, again, a denied life.

I'd go for it.....not with an arena where constant death is always going on, but maybe a gauntlet, or a maze, or a mock village set-up.

If they had this, and when players log onto their shard, suddenly a display of the monthly champion was on their splash.....yeah, that would give a real player a sense of pride.

No pixel rewards, but a monthly display to all.

  28. BeefSupreme

    BeefSupreme Guest

That's just the point of this. Yes there are many ways to train and do the things I'm advocating already. But people are not using them to the extent that they can. Maybe they don't want to join a guild and deal with all that, I don't know really.
I do know that trying something new might work.

It seems to me the majority does not want to do things unless they are easy to jump right into anymore ingame. This idea is partially to cater to that.

My thinking is if you make a real simple way for people to experience PVP, at least SOME will make the further jump to factions, or Felucca straight up PVP.

a small arena set up for 1 vs 1 and a wagering system would be nice to see. That would make sure that there are true 1 vs 1 & i do beleive it would be used often. But beyond that if one wants to practice pvp,,,go pvp.
Risk you say,,,,i`m too scared you say.Really now,,,this is a game.Is losing 3k to 7k of insurance gold or 10% of your punkte points is too great a loss then pvp is probably not for you.Even then one could slap on the virtue armor and lose no ins for that,,blessed weapons/jewelry are there too.Givin i would be amased if you actually killed anyone wearing that but if no ins. loss is your goal & still try out the fel areas maybe thats your route.
As stated earlier there are allready sytems inplace for people to train,,if people are not using them then they really dont want to learn.

Id like to expand on this idea

Ive wanted a proper pvp arena for a very long time, where you can fight 1v1 2v2 all the way to 10v10 for bigger guilds.

Allow people to que for duels or even select there opponents, keep a shard wide leader board and a UO wide leader board

If it would be possible run small new shards / instances with only has a PvP arena so there's no monsters, NPCs or creatures for the server to control (hopefully this would allow a lot better ping).
Then allow people from all the shards to que and fight there. Imagine the best Pvpers on Siege competing with players from Sakura, Oceania, Atlantic etc.

I know this sounds kind of WoW like, but it would really freshen up PvP then there would be more new pvpers. If they could try it out on an even playing if only at least numbers wise.

Also maybe have it so that the two teams are mute to each other to take away the personal insults that seem to go hand in hand with PvP, so as to not discourage new players.
Even have levels for the arenas based on total property values of the PvPers suits, or Stat / Skill cap / Power scrolls eaten

I personally would like to see some skill back into pvp, so it isn't just who has the greater numbers, dismounts more or brings the most dragons

If you look at the virtues one was intended for duels.

Keep it in check like other virtues so can only gain so much per day would help keep abuse down. In that day can only duel the same account once more in a grudge match.

Like the old player ticket reward system there need to be a pairing system. Walk into the dueling pit by umbra and the pit tallies the mod value of what you wear and is in backpack. Then for virtue points matches you up with a like point value player. Could have 4-5 value blocks with the lowest being nothing but GM gear. Highest block to earn points whatever tickles your fancy with nothing blessed or insured in the pit.

Reaching Knight in the virtue be like earning points by turning in treasure maps at the library. Just not that long or painfull. There would be a private area in that knight could burn their points to do an elemental base champ. It be like doing a circle at Brit and have to have full party manifest to go.

The gran prize for that champ instead of relics has rare chance at a deed. The deed allows an item to be altered to a same type area. Turn an AoF into any other chest piece. Changing and item that is none med to med type armor tacks a -1 FC to it. Weapons would be grouped by their SS,damage and # hands.

I think a PvP arena is something that players can create all by themselves. If we weren't too lazy to organize them, we could create PvP tournaments just the way we like them. Custom housing offers us all the tools we need, be it in Trammel or Felucca.

However, I think turning the dueling pit in Jhelom into a PvM arena might be a nice idea, cause it would allow players to test their skills on unknown monsters. The monsters should not have any loot, of course.
  34. DarkVoid

    DarkVoid Guest

If this had a system whereby players going to the area are given a confirmation gump that explains what this area is for, and gets confirmation that they actually want to go there from the player, then I think this might actually stand a chance of working.

What I would like though - and not just for PvP, for PvM too - is a macro editing system that helps the player set up macros, explains their purposes and uses, and above all, tells them if any have conflicting hotkey assignments!

It should have a way for players to copy a character profile from one character to another, too.

It should work in all current clients, 2D and EC.

I've only skimmed this thread, but just thought I'd add my short two cents.

    - I like the idea of an arena.
    - I like even better the idea of a wager system.
    - I don't like the idea of more items as rewards.
    - I like the idea of a wager system because it is player driven and doesn't add more pixel crack.
    - I don't like the idea of titles as rewards because people will find a way to game the system, and they will be meaningless. The same goes for stats.

Interestingly, some of the best and fairest PvP I've watched or participated in, recent times, has been player run tourneys. All of these took place in player constructed "arenas" within custom housing. Strangely though, you wouldn't see that many of the PvP forum "warriors" participate when the fights were more balanced, or simply 1v1... rolleyes:

As for "arenas" in-game as part of the landscape, there's several places dotted around that could be put to such use. The first that springs to mind, is the arena near Doom entrance... now what was the purpose of creating that, if it doesn't get used? There's also the bag-ball arena outside Luna.
