It was called the Age of Shadows (that was when 3D was introduced).
It was discontinued due to on going problems with that client and other issues.
I don't have any screenshots from that time (really didn't like the 3D, it was a CPU hog), but this link will take you to a video of the promo for AoS, it shows alot of the 3D client.

Actually Money, the 3D client was not Age of Shadows. The 3D client was called Third Dawn, and came out in 2001, AOS didnt' arrive until 2003.

    Here's a screenie of it.

Funny that it was called a "horrible client" when it was the 2d client with polygon models rendered on the fly instead of pre-rendered sprites (From LBR onward even the terrain was the original 2d terrain).

I guess if it was so horrible we should get rid of those nasty jewelry slots on the paperdoll, shift-click to buy a whole stack of an item from an NPC vendor, and those Ctrl-Shift Object Handles as well :D

Honestly though, the worst aspect about the 3d client was the zoom feature. It was useful, but it caused the 2d graphics to distort and pixellate like mad. Performancewise, it started out horrible, but evolved as 3d technology evolved to be a rather smooth running and stable client with the only noticeable lag being in heavy combat situations (i.e. the center of an invasion).

The second worst thing about it would have to be the precident it has set for the UO dev teams over the years to start a more technologically advanced client and expansion, get the client "running", then completely backpedal on the idea instead of pushing forward and not only fixing the client itself, but retaining the notion that new content requires a new client which would have allowed UO as a game to continue to evolve even more braodly than it has so far.

Instead, thanks to that precident, and the people who support the chaining, we remain chained to old technology.

I think the most frustrating thing to me is seeing such potential wasted to appease a Ludditic style of thinking.

As for the OP, I have quite a few 3d client screenshots over the course of the life of the client, not sure what I have uploaded or the time/inclination to upload though.

  7. I played 3D up until the discontinuation. Better than 2D in my opinion. Not to mention you could make longer book names in it (big plus for me).

Thank you, I stand corrected. A friend had corrected me *very soon* after I posted that. Seems my mind is going with the years.
Was that the one with jewel case art of a white background and the UO logo? Like I said mind going with the years, can't remember crap. I suffer from *CRS* :blushing:.

White box was UO:R... Third Dawn had the sillouette of Dawn on a black box, AOS had a more "busy" piece of artwork.

I couldn't tell you what the actual disc or box art looked like for third dawn. I was a member of the beta, and got a black and white labeled disc with the uo logo on it and the words third dawn in plain text. I never actually bought it, I stopped using it after the beta ended.

Heh, I have the Beta CD too since you didn't actually HAVE to buy the expansion itself if you had the Beta CD... they patched it all the way through.

That oine even though I used the client and LBR were the only two expansion I have NOT bought so far (I refused to buy LBR because I did NOT want the Borgthorn toy, much less a Borgthorn toy for BOTH accounts involved).

The original 3rd Dawn client was nice, and looked pretty good. It was with the introduction of LBR (or was it AoS?) they downgraded the 3D client, and made all models lower poly, and made all characters look like bobble heads.

I feel the same has happened with KR.

We all know KR was prematurely released and it suffered for it. But that PR nightmare has meant they're scrapping all the good that came from KR and writing a whole new client (as if people will be able to divorce the failure of KR from SA because it's "new"). What they should be doing is further developing KR - as it was halfway decent before they abandoned it - rather than start from scratch. And I don't feel KR/SA should be 2D-esque, no.. it panders to a group that will never change.

I didn't play Third Dawn much, sadly my computer just wasn't up to it. I thought it had terrific potential, though.

The problem isn;t the people who don;t want to change, it is the people who not only do not want to change, but do not want to allow anyone else to either. It is the people who want to "ban people for using KR", or claiming that "only REAL players use 2d" and so forth.

It's not the people who have legitimate issues with the client, but those who hate the client on an irrational level and go further and attack those who use said client.

But the reason why the story of the 3d client seems familiar is because we're in the middle of doing the EXACT SAME THING that was done back then... the very thing I was worried about happening when KR was annouced.

  16. D'Amavir

    D'Amavir Guest

The same can be said about both sides of the legacy vs 3rd Dawn/KR/SA discussion. The people that want/ed 3rd Dawn/KR/SA to be THE client usually say things like "they should stop supporting 2d and move forward" and "SA should be SA client only". Sounds to me like those people don't want others to have what they want either.

If you like 3rd Dawn, great. If you like KR, great. If you like SA (and that judgement is yet to be made by most people), great. But just because someone else doesn't, it doesn't make them 'luddites'. Like something new just because its new is just as bad as fighting something new just because its new. I think most people, the ones that are worth mentioning at least, judge each client on its merits and then decide what works best for them.

    Fixed this for you!

Kr and SA should have been released as separate games or not at all.

I can only imagine how much better the game would be if the team focused on the original client instead dividing their player base into squabbling factions.

  26. Belanos, just in case you did not know, you can still make long book names in KR (that was what I missed most about the 3D client, too).

Dermott is right. Had they dropped 2D after Third Dawn and worked on that client alone instead of both... moving forward... they might be somewhere now with a true 3D client or at least one in the pipe. Instead, the game is regressing. What's next, 256 colors? Floppys?

It's fun to grab the Leisure Suit Larry CD for $5 and load it up for an evening of silliness... it's another thing entirely to latch onto 2D and pretend that it has the ability to draw in new players... and keep all of the old ones.

True, but that 'group' that you refer to is a large percentage of the paying UO subscriber. In pandering, as you put it, to that group, EA are securing the longevity of the game. By disregarding that group and moving the game forward by forcing a more advanced (technically) client on them, they could inadvertently bring about UO's demise.

Best forget UO moving forward as a game engine ... its way past that point. Its a niche game now and thats what we'll always have through necessity to keep the majority of paying customers.

I didn't play 3rd Dawn, well apart from logging in once I think and losing all my 2d macros :<

Why was it prematurely released though?? The community, especially those that post here, cried and nagged for it. The old gotta have it now attitude.

That's the problem with UO's advancement, the players. What we have is a combo of the younger generation;I want it now and for free.

Then we have the older generation(seems much older at times); I'm used to this and I'm not changing for anybody.

So what do we have?? A game that's too embaressing(sp?), graphics wise, to advertise and promote.

3D had good graphics for pets and monsters, paperdolls weren't that bad either....until the bubbleheads came along. (still say that artist needed a beating)

last point in blaming the player; look at the cry for reversal and retro shards.
Hey, I would love to go back to 1978, and keep my 70 mustang fastback, but guess what?...................you have to go forward, eventually.

    enough for psyche 101

One of the things that I never was able to do with the third dawn client was sailing .... Rubber banding while moving ships was so horrible that I regularly got boosted from my ship and teleported to a nearby landmass. It was the time when I learned to value the 2D client. (I started with/during td-expansion.)

I searched high and low last night for my screenies from the last day 3D was live, but I guess I lost them :( By then, the playability was better than current 2D, but the paperdolls had been made fugly (thank you AoS) and the grass and whatnot was identical to 2D (thank you LBR). However, it still had some awesome features (resizable containers, docking icons, rotatable paperdoll) I miss to this day, and I would go back to it in a heartbeat over 2D or KR.

Yeah, that was kind of fun. The list of gestures you could use was also fun.

Right after KR came out, I made a comparison of what some of my characters looked like in the paperdolls of the various clients. I never minded how the characters looked in 3d. I know some people thought they looked too innocent or childish, but I guess it didn't bother me because that was the only client I used. I remember how dismayed I was at the stupid elven flower hair design in 2d. Other than that, though, it wasn't that hard adjusting to the look of the characters in 2d. What was a shock and huge disappointment was how the female paperdoll characters initially looked in the KR client. I'm so glad that got fixed!

I liked the 3D client. I never had problems with it. I liked how you could make the containers larger and everything matched on the 2d. KR is way off in freeform. *sigh*

    Those pics bring back memories.

At least the items in the backpacks were actually sharp in the 3D client. Now they are so fuzzy and garbled (not to mention don't actually go where you want them to) that it is a sad testament to programming.

You know what was worse? It always seemed to get worse as the years went by.

In fact, one of our artists, before we started KR, discovered that all the Human character scalings were totally out of whack, because generations of devs before them misunderstood what the CSV file that had their X, Y, and Z scales *really* did.

He fixed it, and suddenly all the people looked *right again*. I miss CatHat :(

yeah... cathat was one of the most fun guys ever. I miss the old 3D. I never could get KR to work for me. I finally gave up. I hope SA is somewhere in between. Between those of us that want more and those that love the past.

  47. ..Coming in with a somewhat late response, but since Nyte and I was betatesters, I made a UO: 3Dawn Beta Diary with a large number of screens from this time in March 2002. I am currently finalizing the remake of my Ultima Online Chronicles that is going to be launched this month. When that is up I was asked to do a remake of the beta diary as well, I don't know what overall interest it is for all this in the current UO Community of 2009, but for anyone who is interested in some UO History I thought I'd post a response in this thread with some info about it.

I could post an announcement here at the UO Hall and also over at UOForums when the UO Chronicles are up and I have some kind of a timeline about the following events. It's quite a large project but of course tons of fun looking back while working with it.

The day I knew there was a god was the day they pulled the plug on that "3d" client. 3rd Dawn is the 3rd worst expansion IMHO.
