I don't have the tolerance for all the idiocy and A.Holes one has to put up with to be a EM. Otherwise I'd jump at the chance. But there are far too many playing who act less than stellar.... and are completely immature. I raised my kids and then some ..... I don't want to put up with a bunch of immature little sniveling brats in my escape.

However I wish you the best of luck Mesanna and may you find some folk who are highly skilled and saints to bring such a fine program to the players.

I think that in part this behavior can be prevented by designing the events in a certain way, starting with NOT giving items to the top damage dealer on a monster but distributing them by other means. I've designed an event where the players get presented a mathematical riddle (which can be solved by basic highschool math that everyone should know) and have one hour to solve it (answer dropped in mailbox in a book). Idiots can't solve it, being an ******* doesn't help them to solve it any quicker. No item for such people, too bad so sad.

There are alot of smart a-holes that play this game. For instance a-hole #1 figures it out and copies book. Hands the book to flock of other a-holes or simply tells them what to put in it.......

Could be, but then more of the item are around and overall value is lower. And these people do it for the value of the items anyway, while most of the normal players appreciate getting something for their effort regardless of the value of such things on the trading post.

I'd love to be an EM,but a friend of mine, that's an EM,tells me that I would have to host a lot of events on the weekends. :( That is the when I am least available to run any events at all.

One of the few EM Event items I have is worth over 200 million gold...when I saw it go for that much on the Rare's Forums I was shocked! I'm rather clueless as to what plays into the value of an item so of course I asked. There are a few rares collectors that are very polite and answered my questions well. I had no intentions of selling it, never will..it is just as you said..I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten an item at all and will value it far more then the 200 million it's worth. It's ugly...(The fact that it's void colored makes it worth that much) and it's a void colored egg incubator at that! Does NOT match my decor at ALL :D BUT it holds great value to me regardless and will always remind me of the event that I participated in to get it.

No matter how one decides to give out an item, there will always be grievers, always the ones who ask *Will there be an item tonight?* before the event even starts...and when it's over be the first to ask *How many dropped?* and instantly put it up for 100 million gold + on the forums...that's the Rare's Collectors..it's what they do...and I won't discourage anyones style of game play..it's the attitude of some that leaves a less desirable taste in my mouth but you can't make everyone happy, you can only try your best.

Good luck to all the applicants, I do hope we get some super awesome EM's out of this :)

Dont you just get the feeling this ''could'' be massively abused by the wrong people/group/guild....i think you know what i mean!...especially with the silly resale values on the latest drop items...its gone crazy....i certainly hope there is a good filter inplace for choosing the new EMs

EMs get fired all the time. One on Atl got fired on his first day. Makes you wonder what they're getting fired for.

To me no item has any more value than the memory it represents. I place no gold value on my items nor do I place a dollar value on my account or holdings. They are treasured because of the memory the represent. Which is why to me I really honestly don't care if the entire shard got the same item.... so what? It's a memento of an event. Everyone who participated and cared about the event ought to have the opportunity to have something to remember it by. I personally think that the limiting of item drops to 10 or 20 ruins the events for everyone.

Why? Because it brings in those from other shards all vying for the same tiny chance at an item that more than likely only a handful of people could even tell you what the event was about and why the item has any significance... It's THOSE people that in my opinion deserve more of a chance to get an item. Not the Greedy A-holes who always show up to get them only to "make a profit"..... because most of that handful of people who really cared about the event, enjoyed the event.... and followed the event appreciating the hard work of the EM's and all the thought that was put into the event... aren't going to be able to purchase said item... instead it likely will go to some greedy off shard "collector" of rare things who doesn't even care what it's significance even is. Only that it's 1 of 20..... so "rare".... where it will be put in a private locked castle to never be seen by anyone who might know what it was.

THAT is what irritates me ...

I was saying that "most" people at these events do know the value of the items they are hoping to "win". People have characters on multiple shards, some for the sole purpose of participating in these events to get the items. If I get an item 90% of the time I'll sell it too. I like to have gold for armor and weapons or anything else that might strike me. That doesn't mean that anyone is less deserving of the items "won". I am just saying more often than not the people surrounding you at the events you are attending are there for the prize. What they choose to do with it isn't any less valid than what you choose to do with it.

Oh trust me I'm made completely aware..... on my shard they are CONSTANTLY making everyone aware of why they are there by spamming perpetually things like .... "Can we just get on with it? Stop talking and just give me my drop already? Is there a drop tonight? What's the drop? STFU and just give me my drop you are wasting my time.... This is stupid.... just give me my drop already ...... Come on we don't care about all this talk give me a clicky.... Get this moving I want my drop..... This is dumb and boring just spawn the end boss already....." Along with every vulgarity they dare ..... Harassing anyone trying to follow the plot by purposely standing on top of them with wings flapping and Greater Dragon in tow.... Spamming spells meant to crash everyone like Arch Cure (While nothing is going on just talk IN Mass so about 5 or 6 of them are doing it all at once) I swear I have 90% of them on perpetual ignore... But it's hard to ignore the stinking dragon parked on top of you for 90% of the event... I finally got fed up and like so many others said forget it.... too much stress ..... I play to relax not get all ticked off. So I quit attending on my main..... I now go on an alt and I park my flappy self on them along with my dragon in tow..... and I invis them over and over and over again if they won't move for the EM.... They can either be invisible or they can move like asked. If that's how they want it that's how it'll be.... Honestly it's getting to the point on my shard where the EM's may as well just put up a clicky and the first 20 people to touch it get it and then they should go home..... because it's getting to where those of us who actually go to enjoy the event for the plot and enjoy the work they put into it..... are down to just a very few. Most all the other decent folk have been driven away from the events by the A-Holes... It's next to impossible to figure out what's going on if you aren't in Vent with 5 other people helping watch the journal since there is SO much spam... if it weren't for Pinco's and running the EC being able to get rid of spell spam and everything I don't think anyone would be able to follow what's going on.

Maybe the EM could put the clicky out first. Like outside of the castle doors. Let those who are just there for that get their items. Everyone else who is genuinely interested in whatever content is being provided can enjoy it in peace. Would that work?

I get the impression that the EM's like to cater to the "rares" community and such..... but I agree..... it'd be nice if they could do something like that and stopped playing into their hands.

Actually here you want the "true-true".... I'll give it to you. If everyone who attended the event followed a few simple rules like NOT spamming ..... paying attention to what's going on and quietly following the storyline and waiting till the end of the event to ask stupid questions like "How many items dropped?" etc.... If they stood in their own space... kept their flappy dragon out of small buildings and left them in the back of the meeting hall and such and didn't constantly flap about on gargoyles... landed while we were being quiet... and talking...... showed some respect to the EM's... stayed back off the EM the requested 3 tiles.... and didn't purposely try to irritate others, crash others clients and ruin the experience for other people... Then we wouldn't be having this conversation.... and more people would be attending and able to enjoy the events.

On my Shard the EM's ALWAYS follow their events with an OOC (Out of Character) discussion.... in which they are more than happy to answer questions..... however there are still morons who attend and always ask dumb stuff like "When are you guys going to fix XXX Bug?" like the EM's are DEV's.....

If people could behave themselves and the EM's actually had the backing of GM's who wouldn't stand for such rotten behavior or the EM's themselves had the power to stop some of the horrible behavior and move people off them...... then more of us might consider being an EM...... but I don't see any of that happening...

A bit of transparency about the rules at least would help. As in, what rights do the EMs have, and what responsibilities... the question about what sort of event you'd host, and what sort of item drop is hard to answer when you don't know what restrictions are in place. For instance, I don't think off the top of my head, there's ever been a rare item in deed form that wasn't part of the global arc; Nexus deed, Blackthorn throne replica... all global. Is that coincidence, or a rule? It matters because it's possible EMs can't really challenge the current set up... I know from talking and suggesting events to Europa's EMs that they're restricted both in roleplay (major global characters cannot die, even if resurrected in game like a player; no reference can be made to certain in game events, the death of Lord British is one) and props (no tameable pets that aren't identical to other tameables a player can just get and just rename to make an identical pet; so no blue chickens, but normal chickens called a Hooby Jooby bird are fine)...And there is a given figure for how many rewards can be given out per month, so all shards are treated equal for potential financial benefit in trading. Even the personal rewards, that is things with your name on, have always been sashes, something you can sell if you wish.

So... I hope we will see things shaken up with new EMs. But decent ones is perhaps all it's best to hope for; they're likely going to be somewhat limited in what they can do with regards to avoiding too great a difference between shards.

In other contexts (rl politics comes to mind) transparency doesn't help because transparency seems to just make people think there's even more going on that we do not see.

    Transparency can't counter conspiracy theories.

I'm not saying that. But getting a feel for the candidates by the people who have played with them (perhaps for many years) should be considered.

We aren't talking about conspiracy theories though, but people applying for a contracted employment position, yet there's no information about what sort of contract you're signing up for... and as a consequence, one can't help but hope there's a second stage where those responsibilities are made clear so those who do apply can be certain if they'd be a good fit or not. I'm not worried about people trying to help friends, I expect Mesanna will be watching the new intake like a hawk. I just think asking for people but not saying what sort of people is the worst of both worlds, giving both space for conspiracy and possibly false hope to applicants.

I understand the argument (I think) but I've also been the subject of way too much, shall we say weirdness?, on the part of my fellow players to hear something like that and not see a bunch of caution flags go up.

thats the trouble.....i cant see how this can turn out good....there first event will drop awesome bling for freinds

the only way i can see it working is if they stipulate the new EMs cant drop items for there first 10 events...and that will probably be enough to put any low life scammers off

Well if you have any substantial info on this person, why not submit it through the feedback form on the UO site? We don't need rotten apples like that.

Although it is difficult to see if this person REALLY is up to no good, or someone up to no good spreads false rumours to discredit this person.

There's no proof or anything. That's why I suggested maybe getting a consensus from the applicant's home shard to check people's actual reputations. There's no real way to insure they hire a quality person though. Just because someone says someone is trustworthy doesn't make them so, nor does saying someone isn't trustworthy make them shady. We all just have to go through personal experience and the word of people we personally trust. Sadly Mesanna doesn't have time to get to know all of us.

Maybe none of the EMs should drop items during regular events. Only Mesanna herself or someone directly under her that she nominates and trusts would have that opportunity, aside from the vending machine items. Could be some sort of Head EM overseer of justice or something. haha. I don't claim to have the solution. I do see the problem though.

I think a lot of people don't quite get how the EMs work.

When the EM program first came out, there was TONS of corruption, which is one of the reasons why it ended. When it was brought back the EM's lost a CONSIDERABLE amount of their power.

    1. EM's don't create the bosses (If you ever notice, if a boss is too powerful or bugged and needs to be fixed, EM's have no access to do so. Mesanna has to come to alter it. )
    2. EM's don't create the items (Many times, an EM has asked to see the item that dropped, as they DO NOT make them. Mesanna makes the item, and puts it on the bosses. Usually the EM is given a copy beforehand for use in their rewardhall for example)
    3. EM's have no power to squelch or discipline players (EM's used to be able to do such things, but no longer can with the EM program 2.0)
    4. EM's DO have the ability to create an item (Such as EM Thomas from ATL), but they are not allowed to give these out. They can make them for their character, or to lock down, but under no circumstances are they allowed to pass these out. EM Thomas lasted about FIFTEEN minutes before he was canned by Mesanna, for giving out a one of a kind robe.
    5. To further prevent players picking up items they were supposed to be locked down, most if not all items used in decoration now have lifespans.
    6. EM's aren't actually supposed to tell people who they are in game, nor are they supposed to tell their guildies/friends. If such a case happens, this can and probably will lead to their dismissal. Also, for any who forget, you cannot be an EM of a shard you play.
    7. Mesanna is extremely helpful in any and all cases of a problem with an EM. If you have a problem, or suspect favoritism, it is treated very seriously and WILL be looked into.
    8. This isnt the first time they have put a notice on UO.com to hire EM's. This is how it works, people email Mesanna, fill out an Application, and if accepted go through some rigorous training. Alotof people dont make it out of training to be an EM for one reason or another.

People who may tell their friends that they will hook them up if they become EM, may not quite realize just what kind of powers they will have, and how well the items are tracked. The training is also going to be alot harder than they may think.

Thanks for the info, Promathia, it's very appreciated and assuaging. The prohibition on giving out items is apparently very strict, and that's the only way to prevent logrolling. In the distant past, friends and I personally saw great abuse in the Seer program's ability to create items. At least one Seer received items on his home shard, courtesy of his home shard's Seer.

What pissed me off the most was their exploited dye tub. Viper may remember it, the darkest evil mage lord cloth that no longer spawns. They put it on newbie clothes and flaunted the colors. Maybe a GM couldn't have caught them on all their other exploits, but that one should have been easy to find. No GM ever cared to look.

i dunno, the fact that they hired this EM Thomas and he got fired in the first 10 minutes for giving away items isn't that assuaging. when one of these guys gets canned you gotta wonder if they were smarter and took longer to get caught

If thAt was True why did EM Thomas get sacked after 10 minutes on ATL for feeding his mates ,,,so they say.....they dont have huge powers but iam led to believe they do DO!! make the drop items

Ah, the joys of the postmodern age.

A thoughtful and reasonable post and some consider a two-line conspiracy theory to be an appropriate response.

    See his point 4.

It's plain that his point 2 was directed at the items we actually get from the events. I have not seen an item that drops on the corpse in some time, they've been "spawn in pack" items for awhile. Anyone else appreciate how ridiculously unlikely it is that the same people who plainly do not have the power to stop stop players from griefing their events also somehow would have enough power to be able to access a system that's like the artifact backpack spawn system?
