UO.. For once, a dieing passion.. How to rekindle this?

Well, recently, maybe it just being summer.. UO for once is a dieing thing for me..

I log in once a week, for my tourny, and that used to be all fun.. I really enjoyed hosting it and I really enjoyed trying to push it up over the bar, adding lots of depth, and gold prizes above normal, and public vent/ts..

But recently, even the tourny has become tedious.. Un-named people pestering me about rules every week, people just commmpllaaining.. People being rude and insulting my RL while Im trying to just host an event..

Personally, I find myself with little time, and the time I do have better spent infront of a TV then UO.. I always have kinda smiled at the idea of starting an Orc, or some form of Roleplay, maybe a hired assassin.. But I dont have the extra account, and such..

I am in no way quitting, I am in no way going to leave REV unless kicked from the stone.. But Im just asking one thing..

How is it you all keep logging on? What do you do to re-kindle the passion you have for this game.. Its sad to even PvP knowing your just gunna see the sameeee faces everrryy time..

So I ask for advice, how do I restart the flame? Or is it just the season of summer killing UO for me?

2. ya know what mem, i would think you to be strange if a guy your age was not getting burned out in a video game. if i were you, id let this thing burn out and start enjoying high school and rl more.

enjoy your highschool/college years, go out and do stuff, not worry about this dumb game

I agree with Castor Mems.

Maybe do something organized... sports, or some kind of hobby that gets you out
of the house more often.

And as far as the people giving you crap about your tourney rules... just do what
you want. You're smart enough to make good rules, and to keep things fun.
If they want to run a tourney... let them do their own. You do a good job with
it as far as I have seen. You'll never please everybody, but you can make damn
sure you please yourself.

Don't lay in front of the TV and call it better than sitting in front of the computer.

If you find something fun to do outside the house you'll enjoy the time you spend
in UO more too... because it won't be the same old thing everyday.

Cheers!

It's probably a minor slump. People have them time to time.

Best thing to do is take a little break and enjoy the sun.

on a side note... I have no restrictions on who wants to be an orc as I a m pretty free spirit but i will say that its not easy and you will be challenged both your creativity and your patience.... I have found that those who do well have a deep seated joy with life especially pullin wings and limbs off small defenseless animals...... actually if you have always enjoyed bein a pioineer and workin groups feel free to ask me about it.......

Put UO away for a bit, go do something else. After a little while you will get tired and want to play again. Everybody will still be here. Seeing the same old faces isn't a bad thing in pvp. I often have some good conversations with the people I fight. When you come back from the above break I mentioned you might discover something new you like about UO that you aren't seeing right now. It's nice to have multiple hobbies, that way you don't get sick of one too fast.

15. It honestly could be the season that is making you think/feel this way... Or it could not be.

After years of having nothing but fighter templates and after have taken a break, I have returned with a different character and different purpose. My character is still not fully developed (RP wise), but I find her a genuine hoot to play. I'm forcing my character to get more sociable in the game.. As a fortune teller and tavernkeeper, kinda hard to stay in the shadows.

Have you tried something new? Have you attempted to re-create your character and its personality? Sometimes it is all that is needed (not a sure fire cure mind you). Maybe this is the time to make that Orc or the assassin (had I known of an assassin on my previous shard, I would have used his/her services fairly often).

Forgive me, I am still not well versed on the who's who in and out of the game...

What Castor said.

Take advantage of the feeling of disinterest, Mem as your perfect chance to let it go!

Looking back, I cannot even imagine myself regularly playing video games when I was in my late teens and early 20's. Nor did I watch TV, except rarely (that still holds true). And even back then, getting along fine with 4 - 5 hours of sleep a night (alas that doesn't work for me anymore) there was not enough time in the day for all I would have liked to do.

Use your brain, consider your interests, and then pursue & develop them. People are not joking or being cliche when they tell you that you need to make the most of this time in your life. When you are concerned in just a few years with earning a living, serious relationships, etc. you will not have the freedom with your time that you can have now.

You probably need a break ! [IMG]

I have been playing UO nearly nonstop since 98. But in all those years, summer time often is worse or the larger drag of time besides say jan feb, and those times when one *has* to log on because they are running a player run event, or something to which then we HAVE TO be there. It is a great joy to run events especially when players do show up and like it, but with that ends up the responsibility to *have to* be in uo. Eventually it begins to feel like work. Eventually one begins to think ok this is just great everyone one is having fun but ME. Where is time for ME in this game ? When do I get to just be the guest and not the one running stuff for others to have fun at etc. So eventually, ya need to cut loose and make time for your own self or just to take a break, so one running said events do not "have to" log in to run something cool for every one else to come to. Sometimes it is better to run things 3 wks in a row, one week OFF, rinse repeat or bi monthly so that ya get a week every other week off where one does not HAVE TO be somewhere in UO.

UO is a game that is fun, till we start running successful things and then after several weeks of doing it, it feels like WORK, and at times it feels no one really appreciates one's efforts cuz yeh there are always those others that have to whine and gripe or blab how they can do it better yet ya never seen them step up to the plate to do player run events. All talk no show or no go some people. So ya might just need a break from the in game responsibility to *have to * be there.

Other times when I get bored to no end with UO, I either stop playing UO for a while, or I may go on test shards or some shard where no one even knows whom I am and I will make some character that is just newbie idiotic fun, to do stupid things in UO that make me laugh. Those times oft end up some weirdo sig of some newblet facing a ancient wrym or ww shouting at it while dead that IT has an attitude problem, or I will make a lockpicker that just gets blown up in every town he or she trys to get into the chests/crates with newb skills and annihilate myself endlessly or deliberately try to kill the guards to get gwhacked. [IMG]

I have played characters that act like they are insane or whatever, I have made characters that just DO stupids when trying to refind a reason to play uo, oft exploring every thing that is still unique or special about this game *in spite of how they ruin it at times* and touring or exploring UO as if I could NEVER get to play it again. It might be on another shard making a character that just explores all of UO like I might never, get to come back to play or to see the game ever again.

It is on those isolated journeys often where I first began UO thus running all over the lost lands even living in the lighthouse or staying in lost land ice dungeon snows, as a newbie missionary/scientist or something, that I refind why I stuck around in UO all these years. Or be it a llama spitting or mongbat enroute to delucia or just seeing the magnificent ww exterminating me in it's natural habitat etc. reminds me how I felt when I first began UO. The AWE we all had as new players can come back to us on some strange shard with some newb char that can not walk and chew gum at the same time to survive a mongbat.

All that stuff, all the diversity that this game still DOES offer, that ends up sticking out or showing up, when I am fed up, tired and have no interest to play any more, so I make the helpless newbie on some shard any where, to journey to try to remember what it felt like to be new to uo itself, to remember what the game is supposed to be about IE FUN ..and then I am ok good to go for another 8 yrs. or 8 wks or 8 mos or whatevers. HAHA

So go make ye self some newblet, be it Orc or some nuttie chr. somewhere anywhere any other shard even all asian speakin shards or wherever, taking a break from chrs you are or have to be, to be/ to do something anything pure fun and goofy, even totally lame in UO, do so like taking an exploration/ vacation in Sosaria. It also helps remind us UO is supposed to be FUN, not work ! haha

I am sure ye will then find reasons to stick around longer and possibly feel rejuvenated about UO, after making a journey to visit all UO like yu will NEVER get to return to UO even taking screenies of things u like about the game, like yu can never come back, and as a new character exploring, UO like ya did the very first time that you ever logged in to this game.

AT worse try to go play SIMS online and you will be GOOD to go in UO again out of sheer boredom of even trying to be some yuppie SIM jerk chr online ! HAHA Sims can CURE anyone of UO boredoms or tireds ! lol *spits*

...or maybe maybe you just need to get off ye tired duff there and go wither people at someone else's player run event one more time, to get back to ye old self again and ye slap happier moods ! HAHA *looks at kelmo/Iantown* (volunteers self to be withered). HAHA

Running successful player run event brings out the adult/parent instinct in us, and we want it to work and to succeed, and sometimes disrupting something is or makes the child in us come out ie the humor kid, & well within every one of us, we need the BALANCE ya know of being both within ourselves, like the parent and child, the responsibility part of us and the humorous no responsibilities kinda nutty fun.

We do need both to have fun in a game OR even real life too, otherwise we are just the stuffshirt boring stick in the mud dull grown up, or the endless immature flakey joker ...we need to be a bit of both extremes, woven into ourselves yet balanced within ourselves, rl and a game to survive all the times we're feeling tired or down. 21. I agree with Castor also and this is from experience. Don't let your student years pass you by without building memories of wild parties and pretty girls. It is also the time when you make connections that will help you in the future. I would feel there was something missing if I had not enjoyed every moment of my high school and college life. It is the time in your life to experiment without the pressures of responsibility.

You have a natural organizational ability... You need to hone these skills now in real life so that you can build a success. This is just a game and will give you nothing toward your future. Future first - game after everything else is achieved. Or you will wind up like some of these people that have no future. Only a poor sense of reality

I disagree with people here somewhat... Highschool and college is ALSO the time to play games... not just party. I don't party anymore and honestly, i don't miss it. Its the EXACT same kind of "time wasting" that gives you "nothing for the future" that you're claiming about the game.

That being said I used to work in a Library and read a TON of magazines and stuff... including education. Some of the surprising articles I've read were about kids playing MMORPGs actually having more potential in areas that other kids... especially better in comparison to those playing regular console games... why? First of all things have changed, you have huge social networks, you do learn social skills because you learn about everything from making friends, keeping them, sharing, etc. (We all know those times when you did something that didn't seem a big deal, and pissed our friend off and learned not to do that... and re-evaluating friendships) Many MMORPG players get together at RL events...

As far as what the articles were REALLY about, was the amount of THINKING behind these games, they aren't just mindless button mashing. People become "students" of the game. Look at the players who set up "businesses", make crafters, farm, they determine market prices, how to be competitive, yet make a profit. They learn about product placement, advertising, location, etc. (I've taken marketing classes and honestly you can learn alot about RL marketing in UO). You learn to understand tactics, look at the MATH behind this game. People who know exactly how much 1% more damage will effect their results in combat. Many of the best testers i've met in MMORPGs were teens. They were the ones sitting there for HOURS parsing logs and analyzing trends, figuring out how the underlying game systems worked. Talk to shaka, revvo, tet and see how much there is to KNOW about the game and how it works... they are like a freaking mechanic for a car. And being able to put all that together into a deeper understanding IS valuable in other jobs... even if the information itself isn't relevant. Even people who do things like write code for macros and the like have to develop skills to do it. Don't just assume something like this is totally "worthless"... sure it CAN be... but it can also be a valuable tool and teach you alot... like everything else, its all in how you use it.

I would say one lesson Mem has been learning here is how much work it is to be an event coordinater.. I have been involved in many events through work and other things and know how much the same it is in RL... maybe even harder in some ways here.

23. Well said, Thauron

24. I agree with everything you said. Absolutely everything except maybe the personal contacts you can make at social parties as a student. Sometimes those are lifelong friends that have a direct influence on a successful and happy future.

Memnoch's talent for organization is something he probably has naturally and this online game has given him great opportunity to realize and see how good he is.

Perfect training and I agree with you.

Never would I tell someone not to play games and I'm sorry you got that impression. But first things first. Then get on without any guilty feelings that you should be doing something else.

Well what I am trying to do is

1. Get my group of friends that I got started here recently up to a somewhat decent level no they wont be able to compete against the guilds like OTF and REV that have nothing but 120 maxed out templates but they will do fine against VMP etc.

2. Once I get them up there start doing more "guild" hunting go spend 3 hours in a dungeon etc do the gauntlent, champ spawns in T2A all that. This has two effects

First we will not be sitting around wondering what we could do in UO

Second it puts people outside of the little safety net that is luna, which will give the PKs someone to hunt AWAY from the GZ.. the idea being if the pks leave the GZ/House area then the blues who want to fight them have to come find them outside etc..

With a little luck this might just help with some of the fun for everyone.. I would ask that the guilds like the afore mentioned OTF/REV show a tad bit of mercy/respect whatever and possible provide gates etc for their victims depending on location, and no I wouldnt even ask the lower food tree pks this one thing because they are not going to be able to wipe out everything quite as easily (at least easy at first :p)

I wont be posting where we are like I have seen TnT do but I will let everyone know when we are starting our nightly runs and I will say this... we will NOT be hunting in the Samurai Lands, Illsh, Malas or around towns. we will be sticking to old world dungeons and T2A.. so once I post people might actually find a reason to goto deceit... or Shame... etc.. heck we already spent 1 night in Shame training on earth eles.. then we hit up Covetous another night...

So yes I am hoping to set an example the hard part is proving to my friends that SP is better and more exciting then all they already have on sonoma.

see you out there...

Edit: We probably will do the doom gauntlet even though I said no malas sorry mistake on my part but we will not hunt in the wild so it narrows down places to look for us [IMG]

Going to go with Thauron on this one.

What makes this game so useless compared to other activities? I remember some of those activities from high school and college...let's see some of the 'memories' I have of myself and friends:
1) Getting drunk and waking up sick
2) Going to best friend's funeral who was killed by some drunk guy in a car
3) Sleeping with various ladies and rolling dice with disease or children
4) Spending quality time watching moronic sitcoms
5) And many other 'fun' time of your life activities

Did I do other things? Sure I did, in fact that is where I spent most my time...playing sports, hunting, fishing, reading, and the like. Oh yeah, there was this one other activity that I absoulutely loved...playing Ultima 1 thru 8 with a group of friends back when it was just a 'U' and not 'UO'. So to say UO is a waste, well I simply say "Says who?". If you enjoy it, it is as a valid hobby or form of entertainment as riding bikes, camping or drinking lots of beer. *shrugs* Just dont see the point in telling someone to do something better than wasting time on this game, when many of the other activities could be considered equally useless or a waste of time.

Now how to put the fun back in it, well to that I only have two suggestions:
1) Play with a crew that you simply enjoy being around
2) Play the game for the journey, not the destination...enjoy what it has to offer and dont focus so much on 'winning uo'.

Gluck with it Mem, but whatever you decide to do...g'luck and best wishes.

I agree that as a hobby, a game, online or otherwise is as valid as any other. However, it seems counterproductive to try to come up with reasons to continue a hobby that has lost lustre, when there are so many others, especially for a young person. If you have to "force" it, then it truly is a time waster, and can actually be detrimental.

I concur.......thats why I said I spent the majority of my time playing UO and other thins that I enjoyed. I also offered up some things that have always helped me to enjoy my hobbies continuously...take hunting.

If i simply enjoyed the killing, then it would lose its luster. You can only kill and eat so many dove, ducks, turkeys, hogs or deer before you prove that you can do it and the adrenaline rush fades. However, if you enjoy the sunrise, the camradarie, the smell of a clean morning in God's country away from civilization, conversations by a fire under a star filled sky, and the victory in finding the animal...then the actual kill is secondary. There have been times when I have been so satisfied with the 'hunt' that I have passed on the shot...granted, my freezer was already full and it wasnt a worthy trophey. [IMG]

Seriously, its about as 'zen' as I get. But I believe life, whatever pursuit, is much more enjoyable if you seek to find pleasure in the journey and not the destination. And that can be hard to grasp in our society that is so driven by goals, status, and competing with others....but I believe it a better path.

So if the journey comes to an end at providing happiness, then he needs to set out on a different path. But dont choose one path over another based on another's perception of what is a valid or better course for your personal happiness. Easily said, but at times difficult to follow. And yes, one of my favorite poems is the Road Less Traveled.

Well I don't know Mem...maybe he isn't getting his homework done... he didn't really specify that. But i just got the feeling that its not the "game" that isn't fun its just that its becoming "work" for him INSTEAD of fun. And hes asking how to get back to the fun... because he seems to indicate he THINKS theres still fun to be had so hes asking for thoughts. Theres alot of reasons this can happen obviously, and generally i'd say he would be having lots of fun if he just wasn't doing homework :p. I know i had fun doing anything not homework :p.

33. Yes. I think I did hear a little frustration about it becoming more work than play in his effort to help make Siege fun for the community. He saw a need and did what he could just as Shad has done.

This is such a long argument. Jeez. I think that UO is getting boring, ive been playing 7 months. Just a change of scenery or something, UO is a lot of work and its really worth it to play, just not all the time. Like right now im just checking the forums and then im gona go get a tan. Just relax, think about things other than UO. I think the UO-playing part of your brain needs a break. BUT NEVER disable your account. That house is in the most awesome spot. Even if i "quit" UO for a few years im gona pay for my acct becoz i love my house its taken so much work to get it and im not letting it just poof because I was cheap. Take pride in your work, but dont overwork yourself.

I've been around for a bit. I've gotten bored. Heck I still do sometimes. I have definitely started to feel like UO was "work" instead of play.

What I do is take a break. I don't disable my accounts. I just do something else that obsesses me for a bit. Eventually I miss UO and I always come back. For me it's like how I feel about Subspace (now Continuum) or Stars!, or Civilization for that matter. It's a game I love and when I'm tired I take some time off.

Is it the best answer in the world? No. Just ask Bennos how annoying I can be when I skip a week or two and he needs something done, like changing a guild title. But I do always return.

UO's like herpes, once it gets in your blood you just can't get rid of it. Sometimes it will seem to recede, the symptom of "I must PLAY UO NOW!" will go away, but in time it'll be back.

Mem... I look back on my high school years and don't think about what video game I was playing. Instead I look back and remember how many parties I went to, how many girls I laid, how much beer I drank, and how many drugs I did.

Of course if I could do it all again, I would. I'd drink 3 times as much, do 3 times as much drugs, lay 3 times as many girls, and go to 3 times as many parties. [IMG]

Well, am about 2-3 years older then you and this game got boring right about hs ending for me also, i took a few months off if anyone notice a few months ago. This summer been playing uo, working, and now trying to find new things to try. Getting back into outdoor activites again. Things I did before uo, rafting, more fishing, trying diving, going on trips to new places.
I would take off a few weeks/months, try other activites if possible and try uo later again. Its last for about a few months, then do it again.

Ha.. Ok.. Questions!

I have 2 houses on siege, 3 accounts on siege, (1 account has a house on chessy as the pops plays there) and 1 account is paid for by gold that holds a house..

I have an amazingly placed smaller house that I use for my event being held by my credit card account.. and my main house that holds everything paid for by gold..

If I were to poof for a few months I would need some genious way to keep both houses, without paying 5000000000000000 gold for game time codes in advance since only Revvo has that much..

Ideas to keep both houses?

Ok so for the first time in a few years I think to myself while procrastinating a school assignment, "I wonder if Stratics is still up, do people still post, will I know anyone, do people still play a prehistoric dinosaur aged game called Ultima?"

Then I log into these forums to see a post I made ~7 years ago as the top post...

I'm officially creeped out.

We are under the impression that we all take a vacation every once in a while from the game. We have taken breaks serverial times over the years and each time we go through the same heart break as we pack as much as we can into the bank.

Here is to you for all your efforts through the years, you are very much appreciated! *Cheers*

Be blessed,

Welp, truth is one does simply leave, of course in order to do so you have to accomplish play this **** out of the game, being a part of the best group you will ever be a part of, which for me REV was the best group I've ever had the pleasure of playing with during any game... Yes I was the "young-in" and as a result I was the butt of a number of jokes, but it was still a group that helped me enjoy a game and without I would have left UO easily two years earlier...

Once REV and OTF died, the game just seemed dead. I banked my **** (just in case) and honestly never even considered a return... I'm glad to see some people are still getting to experience Siege though, I hope it offers you the same good times it offered me.
