It's time to brush up on your gargish before Stygian Abyss Launches! You can do so now with the Gargish Dictionary. It's located in the playguide and separated in alphabetical order. We've added an "English to Gargish" section and a "Gargish to English" section. Both are separated in sections.

To get to the Playguide click the button on the left navigation bar or just click here.

oh help! I only read the intro page and I'm already totally confused.
If we have to actually use it for anything vital I'm stuffed.

First off... if someone starts speaking Gargish English to me, with all those stupid "To be helped by you?"s I swear I'm going to find some way to murder him in Trammel.

Second: It seems they got "Gargl" - "Gargoyle, Gargish" switched around.

Third: If all their English sentences start with the infinitive form (or usually just "to be") they would speak in Gargish the same way. But we don't know how to form the infinitive form in Gargish.

"Without correct knowledge, admittance among Underworld certainly important"
    - What the heck does that even mean? and you spelled "des-ter-mur" wrong

"To have not read the book of the Gargoyle language, either of them. To make a way for changing the English language to the Gargoyle language, have me. Yoda me do sound like, yes!"

    Blackrock

This is going to be an annoying expansion... Oh well, I can work out my frustration with a cathartic Gargish genocide.

Psh, I'm going to read it anyway, I'm writing the Stratics page for it. The dictionary itself has a few mistakes in it. For example, they have the word "smelly" as "olef-ku" which literally means "with smell." Problem with this is the word "smelly" in english doesn't actually mean full of smell, but "bad smell" so the word should be "Bal-olef" (or would it be "Olef-bal"? [not sure if word order matters in the combination words or not])

"smelly" in English is loosely translated as "bad smell" It really just means to have a strong odor, "usually" unpleasant. This is because of the general use of the word, not its direct meaning or the meaning of the word when it was created, you can have a strong odor with out it being unpleasant people just generalize the word with things that smell bad =p. Oh and by the way Otis' first post meant with out knowledge you can not enter the underworld. Have you ever translated something from one language to another? (with out a translator =p) that is a serious question, since I was not sure how serious you were or how sarcastic.

I realize that smelly should mean full of smell, but the way it is used in modern English gives it a negative connotation. If i said "smelly flowers" no one would think that I meant "fragrant flowers" even though the phrases are technically the same. The connotation has overwhelmed the original denotation to such a degree that the using the word for its connotation is actually more correct.

Was translating the phrases simply word for word, and unless I was missing some strange idiomatic gargish phrases, I translated it correctly. Obviously no language makes perfect sense translated literally to another, but typically most of the meaning is able to be deciphered from the literal translation, and the need to Anglicize the translation should be minimal.

I know you were, but you asked what it meant so I just responded, and was only curious if you had ever translated things before was all, since as I said could not tell if you were sarcastic or serious :).

"Kai nai, dunamai diagrapsai tas heteros glossas" <-- no idea....

Back in March 2001, a man named Gilforn spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how to create permanent facet gates. One night, as if in a dream, a wisp appeared and led him to a gate below Moonglow in Felucca --a gate unlike any he had ever seen before. The wisp vanished and then a chorus of voices spoke to him out of the darkness.

"you have worked hard friend. your efforts will not be in vain. look upon the gate and see...."

Gilforn asked, ""Who are you and why do you disrupt my dreams with this strange vision?"

"we are wise. we seek to help."

"see what you have not seen. find what you seek. we offer it freely."

Gilform replied cynically, "Nothing is free. With what cost does this knowledge come, spirit?"

"no cost to you, friend. no cost to you at all. look upon the gate and learn."

The next morning, Gilforn awoke and as a sort of madness overtook him, he found himself gathering ingredients to make spells and soon, chanting words he'd never heard before:

    "init kal vas gres
    trak sek-de ter-mer..
    re in ew tu-tim in-ten
    re grav beh
    i trak-por "

The spell components erupted in a flash and the moonstone he had placed in their center sunk into the ground. A swirling gate like the one he had seen in his dream appeared. Stepping through the gate, he found himself at the Shrine of Justice, but it looked nothing like the shrine he knew.

Gilforn returned to his lab and rushed with excitement to report his discovery to Anon and the rest of the Council of Mages. In the blackest part of the Void, three figures grinned darkly. It had begun.

My rough translation from Gargish to English of the words Gilforn used comes out as follows: (Alternate translations are in parentheses.)

    "init kal vas gres"
Start call big way out (out / way)

    "trak sek-de ter-mer.. "
Toward (for / unto) second (both / two) of (belong / from / possess/ than / like) worlds (?) (Cannot find "ter-mer," but do find "ter-mur/")

    "re in ew tu-tim in-ten "
To begin (To) create (become / cause / form / make) and forever (always) maintain

    "re grav beh "
To begin (To) field (energy / authority / power) justice

    "i trak-por "
Me (I) pull (draw / attract / drag)
