On Great Lakes we will be doing a revert back to Monday morning maintenance. While the decision to do a revert is never an easy one, this is the only way to resolve an issue that caused items to disappear out of player's homes on Great Lakes. This revert will restore the items players have lost. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank the players for their understanding.

Great Lakes will be down for approximately 1 hour to perform the revert.

(hopefully the root cause of the issue has been isolated ... there's always a little nervousness out there that something that could happen in one place could happen in another)

So EA does a revert in order to replace items that players have lost but in all the years I have been playing and lost things I have always been told that EA will not replace items. Even in their Terms of Service they say this

  7. Tinsil

    Tinsil Guest

Wow. And here I went working my skills almost all day yesterday... Only to find today that all my work from playing close to 8 hours yesterday is undone.

This kinda crap makes me just want to quit.

  8. Wallenstein

    Wallenstein Guest

That just claims that they do not assume responsibility for items lost on your behalf, or for items lost due to a server error or similar glitch.. basically it's a disclaimer so you can't go after them. Reverting was a viable option and the resources were there, so there was no reason not to revert. This issue affected multiple people, not just one, so a revert was a good move.

Chances are there was blatant evidence the issue was server-related-- something not often seen when a player claims to have lost a, say, server birth rare.. which is why they don't replace those items.

So they replace a few players items... but how many players lost items because of an over 24 hour revert.

I can understand your frustration but surely you understand the frustration of all the people who have worked for WAY more than 8 hours to obtain the items that they lost. A revert was the only logical, fair way to fix that.

  12. Tinsil

    Tinsil Guest

I don't blame them. I blame EA for having this sort of thing happen in the first place. WoW sucked, but I don't recall them ever doing a 24 hour revert of the whole server.

This is what actually has me worried now that the revert (good or bad, everyone has thier own opinion on it) has taken place.

What happened and whats the chance of it occuring again somewhere else if not in the same area?

No on is asking the important question. Did they fix the problem or just revert it in the meanwhile.

    Tinsil Guest

Who knows. I know I won't be wasting my time playing GL today until I'm sure it's fixed. Lots of hours of work undone. I had no idea houses in Luna were missing stuff as my house was okay, otherwise I would've stopped playing.

Can we keep a sense of perspective please?
No EA will not replace items lost through player's carelessness, odd items lost to a bug or a scammer etc, but when a large number of people lose not just a couple of items, but the entire contents of their homes due to some error with the server, then EA had to do something about it.

Anyone who has played for a number of years knows there have been reverts in the past, it only happens when it's unavoidable. In the early days it was not unusual to have 3 - 4 reverts in a day!

For those threatening to quit because of the time they lost - how would you have reacted if the entire contents of your house had disappeared when you logged on today?

    What Item was lost?

I find the point above very interesting: How many people lost items from the revert.

  19. Wilde1

    Wilde1 Guest

I don't play GL but logged in this morning. It wasn't just a "few items." There were many homes of players who have collected items for years where the stuff was just plain gone. I saw one museum where all that was left were the rubble display cases and a couple monster statues (pics were posted in a diff thread).

Nothing a player accomplished in one day of game play is equivalent to what was lost. I know it hurts to lose that sought after item that dropped yesterday or those hard won skill gains from 8 hrs of game play, but the item loss was the far greater in comparison.

They made the right decision to revert.

If I'm reading right, every chest, every lockdown, in every house in the Luna area disappeared, leaving only deeded items and items that behave in a special way when locked down, like rubble.

    The issue has been resolved.

There were many items that were lost and no way to get them back other than reverting the shard to the last saved point prior to the issue. Many of these items players would not be able to get back through normal gameplay.

Making the decision to have the revert was a difficult one.

I agree, 10 plus years of items or a few skill points (which are easy to gain these days) and maybe a mempo or two. The revert was best for the overall shard.

  24. The bug that hit luna affect what maybe 20 or so people, a revert effect how many? A couple of hundred? How do you chose such a small group of people over a larger group? I can't even begain to cover what my guildies and I lost in a revert. Irs alot more than a few mempo. Add everything on gl lost and i am sure it our weighs what was lost in luna.

So I loose a day... so what ..peeps who had their entire house wiped lost YEARS.. a little compassion for your fellow player.. PLEASE!

I feel for those that lost out from the revert, and I am also very happy that those that logged in this morning to empty homes were able to get their things back too.

Lets remember something before getting too upset...it's never a good idea to let a server of any type continue to operate with glitchy/bugged code/unforseen errors or the effects of such still in place. I would definately say if from only a technical standpoint, the right decision was made to revert the state of the server to a fully functional one after the problem was resolved.

Ok so i have to say i agree trust me im not happy that this happend my husband and i did a lot of work sorting out and cleaning out buildings setting up for the auction alot of stuff got undone that we did but ya know what our toons are still there, our items are still there(the items still in our house), what if it didnt just affect just people in luna? what if it cleared everyones houses and everything in it? Then ask you self how would u feel? try to place urself in there shoes, oh and btw why not try to use one of the virtues....Compassion?

I read this over several times and I am still flabbergasted that you would write this. There is nothing any one person or any group of people or any group of a couple of hundred people could have done in just 24 hours that would outweigh other people losing the entire contents of their houses. Nothing.

I know what it's like to go through a revert. On LS the day Trammel opened for housing I placed a large marble in a wonderful spot. But we crashed and I lost my house and I wasn't so lucky when we got to try again. Then a little later on we had a revert almost every day for a week. We joked about it and we learned that anything we did might be lost. It was frustrating, yes, but we survived. Losing the entire contents of my home, that might be hard to survive.

The problem isn't who lost more than others. The problem is that the backup system is definatly not up to snuff if the only way to get some items back is to revert the whole shard. Thats terrible. Each account should have its own backup process. Banks and houses included to the account they are owned by.

  32. Wallenstein

    Wallenstein Guest

Well I for one forgot to refresh a boat yesterday that collapsed with a bunch of BODs on it. Thankfully it was there after the revert and I was able to refresh it.

Sorry to hear people lost time and items.. but I think the revert truly helps more than it hurts in terms of the overall community and keeping players...

I think having each account backed up is not a realistic option. I do believe that having several backups per day, perhaps broken down to zones would be a feasible answer. That way they could have reverted just that zone back to the last saved backup prior to the bug, which may have only been 12 hours ago.

Then again you could also say that the backup system in place is just fine since it is actually used so rarely anymore.

Why having backups for every account isn't a realistic option? Each facet should have it's own backup, though.

Would be pretty sweet if they kept logs of everything that's happening in the game world, backups of accounts, characters, bank contents, house(s) and house contents..

Realistic as in the cost of additional hardware that EA is not going to pay for.

They do have several backups during the day. Shards don't crash much these days, but when one does the revert involved is now only minutes. In years past it would be three hours minimum.

It may not be just about the backup that holds the lost data. It may also be that whatever caused the issue in the first place was included in subsequent backups so they have to go back to one that is clean.

This happened on LS several years ago. I don't recall what the problem was (or even if we were ever told), but the backups were bad so they had to revert back to a backup without whatever the problem was in it. In that case the revert was, as I recall, from late Sunday morning back to server up the previous Friday! You guys should feel lucky you only lost one day!

This kind of attitude has always irked me. You are trying to compare your guild losing 1 day to several people losing in some cases years and years of there collections, work, etc. I am sorry that you and others lost 1 day. It truly must suck and I do sympathize. However I am glad that those that lost years recieved the revert. Seems 1 day is easier to get back that 1-10 years. That is just my opinion though.

Ok, so let's say you had a lot of items lost along with these 20 or so people. A lot of server-birth rares and items that cannot be replaced in any way. Wouldn't you want a revert to retrieve these lost items?

Clearly you have no idea what was actually lost. A friggin mempo can be bought. A friggin mempo can be hunted for again. Whatever you achieved in 24 hours you can easily make-up in another 24 hours. A lot of these items that were lost cannot be replaced. I highly doubt everything that was lost by everyone else that was acquired in the last 24 hours can even come close to the value of everything that was lost in this bug.

    If this were implemented...
Say I lived in Fel, and moved house to Tram. Placed a house in Tram, picked up all my stuff and moved it there.
Then, there's a problem with Fel, and it has to be reverted.
24 hours ago, I had all my stuff in Fel, so the reverted Fel has my stuff. Trammel wasn't reverted, and has all my stuff.
This is why the backup can't be individual accounts, or facets.

    I can already sense it's a secret issue, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't ask...

What issue caused this? Was it something a player did/could do again? Was it a strange server hiccup that could happen again? What caused this to happen?

Well as someone who DOES play on GL... I for one am GLAD for the revert... I didn't lose anything at all ... because I haven't been on for the last couple of days...

However even if I had been on... even if I had done 8 hours of skill work and had it undone... I would not mind the revert.

Why? Because I know that had one of those homes been mine I would be crushed.

I played with someone who was in my guild who had the same outlook as some who've posted.... So what... it's just pixels...

Well it may be "just pixels" to some.... but its as important as the picture of your new grandchild, the picture of your childs first day of school, the photo of that awesome catch you got last summer... or anything like that... It's a memory.... I liken it to having lost all your belongings to a tornado... If you could get them back you would.... If you could rewind and undo a tragic event like a tornado wouldn't you?

How many lose all their precious belongings? Things that can't be replaced?

No I'm glad they reverted the shard... I've lost things before that were stolen.... and it hurts.... it really does. The play my friend wrote for my theatre gone... and since he no longer plays UO completely irreplaceable.

I know folk say that it's "just a game" and the things don't really mean anything... "just pixels"... but it does... over 9 years I've played UO... and there are 100's of memories... some of the things I own are things given to me by friends who've left UO... they are every bit as special to me as the pictures saved on my computer. Just like any other file I'd be very sad if they were lost.

What makes you think account backups would be tied to a specific location in the game? Easy enough to restore specific items, skills, characters, whatever without having them appear in only 1 location.

Guess my point is this, if it were account backups, each account that had a house in Luna could have had thier houses/items restored without having any effect on the rest of the shard. Heck, they wouldn't have even had to take the server down. The Backup Admin simply goes click, click there's your crap.

So, replace the facets with accounts.
I have a nice item, on account 1.
I give said nice item to a character on account 2.
Stuff goes wrong, and account 1 gets messed up.
Account 1 is reverted to before account 2 was given the item,
    Account 1 has item.
    Account 2 has item.
Not a problem there, is there?

And here I was, thinking it was pretty obvious...

Nevermind the fact that anything can be tracked to prevent fraud.....
so every 2, 3 years a few items might get duplicated.....you think that is worse than a whole shards day gone?
    Seriously?

  49. Wow...And your a Mod... *shakes head* Ok....I'd say that there where far more items (qty) lost in Luna of much value than where gained during the 3 days of game play. And I'd bet if you where one of the ones affected, you would be playing a diff tune......No? You'd be ok with no revert if you Lost 98% of your items in a Luna house? Say VERY old rares that CANNOT be gotten in game anymore.... you'd be ok with that PAS??? I think not! And if you say different, I say your a LIAR. A 3 day revert on a low pop shard to restore TONS of players items and Shard History through such items should be a non issue.

I can't believe a mod here would rather see people affected in Luna Losing all their items in their house's than what ever people gained during game play the past few days..
