Uskadesh ripped the knife cleanly from the last of his crew, his wings and robes doused in blood. The look of denial and confusion clear in the dying gargoyle’s eyes as the minister cleaned the blade on the jaw of the recently deceased.

He spoke soothingly, bending his neck so the young one could hear, “These are the last words you will hear: know you have served your queen valiantly.”

With that he was on his way: a message to give and glory to receive. The guards-in-training had shown flashes of brilliance in their fight. However, even has a minister he had many years more battle experience in battle than the whelps were dispatched with scant effort.

He felt comfort and peace in that this nasty piece of business was finally and victoriously ended. But, running for so long was taking its toll. His wings and lungs screamed for rest. A half moon assisted him with the shroud of shadow as he sprung and forced his body through the wilderness toward the rendezvous point.

In Uskadesh’s flight he could feel the presence of hounds growing around him as he closed the distance to his destination. Virtuebane had arranged for a form of entourage.

Quite fitting, he thought. I think I shall have a few of these as pets as part of my reward.

The clearing was non-descript. No pyres of flame, no wailing and cries of lost souls … simply the gilded touch of the night slipping through the dark limbs of the trees. Virtuebane seemed to be waiting patiently. Sitting on his haunches, he was loudly enjoying a bit of what smelled like roasted pig. His resonant yet grating voice lifted through the calm night air, “Hail good minister. Having a bit of a treat. Something about leading a demon horde keeps one famished. Care for some?”

The look of confusion must have been too obvious on the minister’s face, because Virtuebane continued. “Oh come now, we demons are not all ruptured torsos and torn hope. We’d never survive without SOME civility,” he chuckled. The otherworldly being savored the meat with uncanny delight.

Uskadesh waited for him to finish. “No, thank you. Gargoyles do not care for pig. At least this one does not.”

The demon made short work of the meal and sucked the ends of his talons as he addressed the minister. “So! What is all this rushing about in the darkness?”

Uskadesh composed himself to offer the news. “As you know your plan has gone well. Courage has fled the humans, love has been betrayed, and truth among the few has been corrupted.”

Virtuebane raised a dark hand, prompting the minister forward. “Get … to … the point.”

“I have on good faith -- that is with my own eyes -- confirmed the presence of the crystal with the elusive rogue Ricardo. He will be attending the memorial services.”

Virtuebane roared with the news-- laughter and blue spears of lightning erupted from his being. The hellhounds bayed and barked with sudden cacophony.

“We demons do know happiness, good minister, and this brings much joy to me. Incidentally, how is that wound mending since our last meeting?”

Uskadesh cringed in memory, the torn and wounded flesh warming in recollection. “It has not mended well, my liege.”

“Ah health. How do they say? It’s wasted on the young?”

The pack of hounds seemed to grow as the demon spoke. The beasts sniffed at the growing tension in the air. Prolonged howls shredded the silence as Virtuebane rose.

Uskadesh grimaced. Murderous intent was clear in Virtuebane’s question and the lowered, predatory stance. The gargoyles spoke, despair clear in his voice. “How have I failed you?”

Virtuebane inclined his head with false concern, “Oh you have served your traitorous purpose quite well. But traitors cannot be trusted.”

The demon was fast. His maw snapped open, arms flung wide as the beast lunged -- claws and hands a blur. Virtuebane wrenched the gargoyle’s wings from its back. The pack howled barking madly, foam and flame dripping from their muzzles.

    Uskadesh fell in a slump.

Virtuebane mockingly attached the wings to his own shoulders, “How do they look?” I think I will wear them to the services.”

The demon leapt a once more. His voice was a searing spike in Uskadesh’s ear as it clutched the gargoyles head in his hands, “These are the last words you will hear: know you have failed your queen and your people.” Virtuebane quipped, “I have friends looking forward to meeting you.”

Hellhounds set upon the minister as he screamed. His own howls mixed with the bloodlust of the pack. Virtuebane spoke above the fray, “Oh! One more thing … demons do not eat pig.”

Uskadesh eyes had finally adjusted to the darkness. As his body was torn he recognized the remains of what could only have been … something human, in a pile across the glade.

So either virtuebane is minax, or minax is impersonating virtuebane?

And, what are these grammar mistakes (other than your own freudian slip)?

If it's in the conversation proper, you're asking too much, in that no one talks in perfect grammar all the time. The Gargoyle has reason to be too nervous, and do you REALLY expect a Daemon (even if a Lord of Daemons) to use proper grammar?

As for elsewhere, who really knows? Just look at the "&" codes from HTML or the like that are in the text when you quote/reply to it - Odds are it's gone through at least two conversions of format, and there's no guarantee that punctuation didn't go walk-about in the copying and pasting into the form that got posted on uoherald, then was further mangled in the RSS feed to here.

I've seen whole documents become ugly messes because of things like quotes (single & double), apostrophes and other non-letter characters getting eaten or mangled in a format change. Hell, just look at any of the pre-2008 posts that got imported into the vBulletin version of these forums(and didn't get edited afterward) to see what happens when you let software do a format conversion without a human going in and proofing.

While I personally appreciate the four (!) pieces of fiction we received this week (I hope this sets a new precedent!), I do believe that they should be proofread several times prior to being posted.

Spelling and grammar checkers don't catch everything, but they can help. A few sets of human eyes, with even a modicum of HS English memories behind them, should be able to catch many of the missing and misplaced commas and stray punctuation. And hopefully prevent some of the awkward phrases and imagery.

A good thesaurus would also help.

wasn't it the Crystal of Duplicity that was retrieved from the castle's basement? seems to me that the only thing Virtuebane could be is Minax

    In the Shadow of Virtue
    in particular, part three

now, I have a question for historians..... when British left, he left the lands in the capable hands of the Royal Council, so have we ever figured out just who sat on that council? most of the early names are now resting serenely in their graves, but some I cannot find later references to... for instance, what happened to Dupre?

The notion that Minax and Virtuebane are the same entity is quite ludicrous. Unless Cal is smoking something funny, its hightly unlikely.

Virtuebane somehow being in league with Exodus makes more sense.

The Ruling/Royal Council was completely assassinated by the FoA so Casca could be installed as King. They don't exist anymore, or rather no official fiction has mentioned them for the last 2 years.

Dupre is still alive somewhere, we just haven't heard from him since 2003-2004ish as best as I can remember. Julia, Jaana, and Gwenno are all dead. Geoffery was part of the Ricardo's lamp quest, and remains alive. Leaving Iolo, Shamino, Mariah, and Katrina unaccounted for.

Hm. The Shadowlords are affiliated with Daemons. But the Shadowlords are supposed to be dead, no? Minax hasn't been seen in forever. Minax is associated with Ogre Lords, as far as player factions go. Exodus of course was a Daemon. On Chesapeake, for some reason, Magincia has a spawn of Daemons, Hell Hounds, and Bane, in addition to Blackrock Golems. And of course, the Bane also are associated with the Guardian demons, which have Fey Slayer katanas. Hm, but a Harbinger is fey, no? Confusing factions. Hm. Then the Slasher of Veils will actually kill the Bane Dragon and Hell Hounds, which was used by the fiction to suggest the Bane were worse than the Slasher. Well, yeah. The Slasher has a house where he chills, and doesn't really bother anyone, otherwise. Of course the Bane are worse, hehe, they want to kill other races off. Neo-Bane.

Spoilers if you haven't read anything yet.

    Part I
    -Queen Zhah
    -Uskadesh (Counselor)
    -Cloaked Ward (Ricardo)

    Part II
    -Uskadesh (Counselor/Minister?)
    -Several Void Guard Enlisters
    -Merchants
    -Helmsman
    -Avery
    -Ricardo (identified)

    Part III
    -Uskadesh (Counselor/Minister?)
    -Several Dead Void Guard Enlisters
    -Virtuebane

Hm...so Queen Zhah is linked to Ricardo, who is somehow still not dead, Uskadesh works for the Bane, until he dies a gruesome death, and now the Bane will be looking for Ricardo. Meanwhile Avery is just sort of there.

Eh maybe I'll get some sleep and wait for Galen and Martyna to figure it out for us, hehe ;P.

Uskadesh was Queen Zhah's Minister of War, now he's most likely a pile of archdaemon droppings... Why/How he turned traitor to Queen & country is sadly unexplained.

The version of Ricardo which was with Avery is dead, killed by Virtuebane at the funeral. Cope with the spoiler, kids. Virtuebane took as much of the Crystal of Duplicity as that Ricardo had. (This is where it gets confusing) The Ricardo with Queen Zhah appears to have (at the very least) a sliver/fragment of the Crystal, and he is alive. This is a potential plot hole, but is the most probable way that Virtuebane will be thwarted for the time being. (not having all the crystal should render it useless)

One thing this raises, is the probability that Dawn knew where the crystal was the whole time, and that Avery's 'retirement' was a cover. Now that Zhah has a version of Ricardo, Ter Mur is in danger.

Past villains and their confusing natures:

    Mondain + Minax = Exodus

Ah, the soap opera that must have been the dark tower...

Mondain, the old balding evil wizard, took Minax as an apprentice. Minax was fourteen at the time, Sosarian child labor and pedophilia laws not being as stringent as they could be.

Now, it is never explicitly stated, but it is implied, that the sexual union between the two happened quite early. This is not what spawned Exodus.

Exodus was a mixture of science and sorcery. It was the soul of a demon in a mechanical 'body.' In mainline Ultima, Exodus was essentially a sentient punch card computer. Its been retconned to be Kilrathi technology which was combined with evil magic.

In UO, we know that Mondain died in the 24th year of Lord British's reign. Since the Stranger never returned to our world(s), Minax grew into a very troubled woman. (She is also probably the most poorly used villain UO has had, barring the siege of Trinsic)

Minax wanted the Crystal of Duplicity because she used to possess it. She used its power to enable her to project herself from Felucca to Trammel so she could cause trouble. Now, since I do believe that the crystal was taken from her duplicate…why does she want another one? This is a massive plot hole. Either someone didn’t read the old fiction, or someone thought we wouldn’t notice. It’s a bad retcon, especially since it we’ve already been told there are two of the damn things to begin with… So, where's the original?

Exodus was separated from it's "parents" during the Shattering and wound up playing house in Ilshenar, eventually gaining a cult following. Exodus corrupted Blackthorn, used the Juka, enslaved the gargoyles of Ver Lor Reg, and eventually bored us into pulling its plug. We never killed it, just disconnected it's mind from its body. (GL EM fiction calls it 'The Sleeper'.)

The Shadowlords have many retcons associated with them. Mainline Ultima lore paints them as 'shards of the Gem of Immortality which were opposed to the Three Principles.' These shards corrupted three humans, eventually turning them into Astaroth, Nosfentor, and Faulinei.

This is where UO fiction departs wildly, but explainably. It was strongly implied that the Shadowlords we fought were the ones from Sosaria Prime, AFTER the Avatar had defeated them. Essentially, they had been kicked out of the main reality and were raging against the smaller ones (the UO shards). Of course we won, but were the Shadowlords killed? Doubtful.

Now, the big Three SL's aren't the only ones we've seen, there have been at least 8 others that have appeared throughout the years. There were the 7 Shadowlords of Sin, which dropped the Sin Swords when killed. Then there was also the Shadowlord Ramuz....which.. well, who cares. It implies that they are a race of beings, or that one exists as a counterpoint to every 'good' Virtue-like sentiment.

When we get to Virtuebane, we're in somewhat uncharted waters. In Ultima IV, the demon basically just told why Magincia had been destroyed - it wasn't a big bad archdemon with world domination on his horns. UO has taken him in a whole new direction, as not only the architect of Magincia's destruction, but as a world crushing power-mad uber villain. If only he had a moustache...

    I foresee two possible futures:

    1) We go on with fighting Virtuebane and his playthings a while longer, before someone shows up with Dawn's sword and we slay him (possibly another Ricardo clone, as he was the most likely to have rescued it as Dawn died). Then we rebuild Magincia and move onto the next arc.

    2) (This is the one I hate) We go on with fighting Virtuebane and his playthings a while longer, before a certain red muppety being offers his assistance. Virtuebane is dealt with and we have a 'savior' who quickly shows his true colors and we're right back where we started. (Not-so-subtle hints about this were dropped during the factions testing. Also, we have already seen one of the muppet's followers last December in the 'Prelude to War' story: Rankin. GL has already seen the first hint of a certain organization as well.)

Thats pretty much the broad strokes, there are some finer details as well, however.

Personally, I would like an arc dealing with Ter Mur (to pump some much needed history into the crumbling land and its pointless buildings), and one to deal with past Big Bads like Minax and Exodus once and for all. Heck, some poisoned mascara for Minax and a bunch of sledgehammers taken to Exodus would satisfy me :p

Ah okay, thanks Martyna. So Ricardo is being duped. Hrm. And Dawn pardoned the original, I forgot that. Why didn't anyone kill that guy, geez. I guess they couldn't have shown an in-game hanging w/ a Teen rating.

Heh. Yes, Ricardo is a heinous duper and should be banned! ;) However, Ricardo was supposed to have been publicly pardoned before SA hit. We missed a few events due to time constraints, such as Ricardo & Avery's rescue, etc.

If Draconi is lurking, perhaps he could give us the gist of what was supposed-to-have-happened-but-didn't before the Shadowlords were defeated. Pretty please, with extra flames on top?

No substances were used during the writing of the fiction. Although, if they had been maybe the grammir woulda been bettir.

    And VB is himself.
Minax is a TOTALLY different entity and no they are not the same! Any similarities to creatures or humans fictional or otherwise is purely coincidental.

I've got a suggestion for you, Cal, to put finding information of this nature (the 3 part Harbinger story, or at least parts of it) into game play.
How about designing a plug and play code that works like a turn-in quest?
Add random spawns to particular MOBs, a spawn of letters (books or scrolls) that we can loot and turn in for parts of the quest. Add locked down books, items with names or words, etc., that we click on and get a quest gump as part of this quest.
The idea being that we collect parts of the story, turn in those parts (and collect extras for our own library collections), and when we collect each piece of the puzzle and turn them all in, we get a reward of things like a golden book or a wall plaque or a bust, with appropriate phrases, and maybe also a few items of greater worth sometimes. And while we do this, we learn the elements of the story beyond a base that you start us off with.

So in this story, you'd start us off with the court rumors of the meeting between Zhah and Uskadesh, some relevant info, and strong clues where to go to next to find letters, stories, names, etc. These can be from both sides of the story as well as just chance NPC encounters.

This doesn't have to be too extensive. It could be as simple as a series of "letters" on enemy corpses along with the story from a courtesan. Or it can be more extensive, depending on your tools (which could be developed and expanded over time).

It would make the information feel more realistically gained, but most importantly it would put it into game play.

so we've got Minax still lusting after the crystal, Virtuebane holding most of it, and Ricardo stashed with Queen Zhah clutching a small piece of it

    Trebr, love your idea!

    Totally.
This is the direction we'd like to go this year. We want more exploration and interaction with the gameworld.

The only reason I pounded out the fiction was because we are in the middle of re-building Magincia right now, and it would have just added to an already intense deadline we're up against.

I'm sure I speak for many when I say we appreciate what was a clear attempt to fill in some plot holes; it will still be frustrating for those playing now, as we remain within speculation and expectation, but it will at least leave a gift for Ultima historians of the future should they ever wonder what gave birth to Magincia...

However, you do need to keep an eye not just on plot and the game, but on human psychology too; what people will do in game is not the same as what they are told is related to the plot, or what they officially can do. I think you had a good design idea with the quests for the Books of Truth for instance, but outside of Rare Vendors or people prepared to go to those vendors and buy them, not many people were ever likely to own a complete set of the Armor... it was just too slow and random to manually get. And if they obviously knew why one was useful, the prices for Virtue pieces would have gone through the roof. The dominant experience then would be Retail not defending the Realm; I suspect that, unless there is a future use for the Books, especially the Corrupted one, they've just been used to create future "Rares" that will be sat upon.

And in opposition to that, the Bane/Meer reputation was a similarly good design, but people have struggled for a very long time to understand why exactly they should do either grind; the latest invasions for instance seem to be an Either Win/Or Lose result at a fixed time... Europa has still not, as far as I know, lost a town to the Bane, but this is because of a very strong Role Playing community which has made up their own, lore-related reasons for fighting them; where as the Bane - Ophidian fight had a physical fight you could see, and feel part of the progression of, and thus was much more greatly attended by a wide range of people who enjoyed the new gameplay mechanic.

So ideally, please try and design quests for which the entry requirements are not steep or even non-existent where possible, but the rewards are for the most part, gameplay based rather than response-reward. Let there be some of that at times of course, especially towards the end... but keep people engaged in the actual events themselves and people won't just be turning up then and complaining as much now ;)

That's some good points. From what I posted, the intent was to keep it simple and easy, offer some basic reward, for two purposes. Simply to get players involved in "the search", and to reveal the story from inside the game. That's the basics. Not hard stuff, just getting activity rolling.

From there, deeper and more detailed secrets and mysteries can also be introduced. Some of it hidden right inside the revealed story. Some of it maybe along next to this basic quest for the story, for example a locked down item that adds to it, leading players deeper into it.

Your post goes well beyond this, I know. All good.
