UO needs more gold sinks.

    They would help the economy.

    Some ideas would be:
1 million gold to take off one PK count.
Buying Karma (no idea how to price this)
Make houses more expensive to customize.
    Raise Insurance Costs.
Actually charge money to stable pets.

    Any ideas?

    Thoughts?

Taxing the poor to pay for the sins of the rich/dupers/scripts is not going to happen. But thank you for creating gold-sink topic #4993392

Help the economy? Did you recently just crawl out from a rock or something? This would stimulate MORE scripting. Why would it need to be changed? The economy is dead. It has been for quite some time. If you don't like the time it takes to work off a PK, then don't PK. If you need Karma, then work it up on Karma positive spawn. Customizing your house expensive? Doesn't make much sense. Raise insurance? For what?
It already costs gold to stable pets. Even if I pay the 30 or so gold to stable for one week, if they are removed from the stable, it is charged again.

I think I prefer the photo of the gold sink over your ideas.

Gold sinks, yes. Preferably without items, dyes, etc involved.

And the above idea gets a big ole HELL NO.

The two groups that have a majority of money in UO include champ spawn raiding guilds. The other group being the VERY successful traders.

There are already so many gold sinks that anymore would just make everything distasteful. Have you ever been hungry for a particular food item then walk into a buffet line and get disgusted? Well that's because there are so many items that your senses are flooded with information and the brain just shuts down.

    We already have:

Replicas that worth from 500k-50 mil
    Val hammers - 25 mil a pop
    Runic kits - 15 mil a pop
10 years of vet rewards that ranges from 100k - 7 mil
Museum collections that ranges from 100k- 9 mil
Tokens as high as 20 mil
server birth/event items/seer items ranges from 1 mil - billion gp
    armors - 20+ millions
    weapons - hundreds of millions

I mean sheesh what else do you want in this game.

Those "gold sinks" don't take gold out of the game... they just shuffle it character to character. rolleyes:

I'd like to see things like Name Change and Gender Change tokens, etc.. purchasable in-game for an equivalent of 1 million gold per $1 real value as purchased on uogamecodes.

Now that's an idea I actually like and would support... but then EA wouldn't be able to make their "lion's share" from it... so probably not going to happen.

None of those are gold sinks (museum collections can be gold sinks, but only if people use gold instead of the much more cost effective alternatives) - that's all just moving gold from one player to another.

  10. You need gold sinks.

They need to be completely useless.

1 million for a spin on an arty wheel. Yes gambling.

1 million to buy a killer weapon that last for 1 hour. They come off NPCs. When the time runs out its gone.

25 million for a special ship. NO advantage, just bragging rights.

5 million to modify your characture in some way that last a week. GLOWING HAIR. A third arm.

    Gold sinks are needed.

I think they need a UO stimulus package..... give all the banks a couple billion to stay in business. Make the stables restructure and fund building projects around the land.

WHAT they think it will help here why not in UO hehehehehe

I think the point was getting the money out of the game. Not having it change hands to another player.

  15. Everyone is going to hate me for suggesting this but, the best gold sink in the game would taxes.

    *ducks flying shoes*

Just start charging a tax based on the size of the property or properties that a player owns. This might also solve some of the problems with players hording houses.

This would actually remove gold from the game, as it would gone, rather than just redistributed to other players.

Please let's remember this is a game and its supposed to be fun. There is nothing fun about paying taxes. Housing is one of the better features of this game to many people, no need to taint that happy feeling with owing somebody gold for it indefinitely.

If you want a successful gold sink it will probably be item based whether we want to admit it or not. Probably needs to be a useless item as well as Raven suggested above :)

I don't get why this topic comes up so often? I DON'T need (or want!) a gold sink, I probably never will! Making ahouse more expensive to customise would penalise me for no good reason whatsoever, so would more expensive insurance (I die a LOT!), or stable fees

    *shrugs*

If anyone really NEEDS a good gold sink I can put my hand up! LOL! =D

That's actually a neat idea, so long as the taxes weren't so high that regular players who have just happened to accumulate nice homes over the years get screwed over.

I've had two good friends leave game, both leaving me their Luna homes. One's a 12x8 or so, the other is 15x13. They left them to me because they knew I baby my houses and deco them like my life depended on it. I use one home as a rent-free vendor home for my guild and friends, the other is used as a auction hall and library for all the tamer's on my server to sell items so they can donate the proceeds to the Zoo.

I also own an 18x18 beside the Zento gate that acts as me and my hubby's 'personal home'. No vendors or anything.

My hubby is the caretaker of the Grog Guildhall on our server. It's an 18x18 that we don't touch, we just keep it standing in his memory.

I'd hate to be taxed to the point where I would lose those homes, especially because most are used for the benefit of everyone.

A UO stimulus will just inflate the gold even more, making it worth less.. Gold in UO has no value, that is why prices are so high. That's just like creating money out of thin air.. It has no value..

Woah!!! A third arm? holy crap thats crazy...so i could drink a pot using a non balanced bow in the other 2? Double wield a 140 luck weapon and a Swords of Prosperity? Disam maybe with a sword and shield too? Can i double wield a spellbook maybe?

I like it but those PvPers will probably complain about having to have a third arm just to compete :)

We don't need any gold sinks...we just need the new king to create his own currency system and make all gold in the old system worthless hence banks wouldnt store it anymore...

I always thought it'd be nice to have a Helm Change deed...

The ability to change that nasty samurai helm into a bandana, or a plate helm...

Make it cost X amount of gold to buy the deed... allow people to change what their armor looks like by buying a deed... Just don't allow weapons. That's how I tell what weapon special I could be hit with...Don't want people to be wielding a crook when it's really a war fork.

That way I could have a full suit of plate armor that's actually got good mods.

Or let us buy a fashionable bandana to wear with our glasses...at the same time.

  26. I have an idea...

How about something like a soulstone that can actually convert skill points in one skill to another...for a fee?

Suppose you have something like 100 points in Swords, but you don't want to play a warrior anymore. So, you use your skill stone, pay a sh*tload of gold, and SHAZAM! You now have 100 points in Magery!

It should not be cheap to do this, and the stones should be account based, like a Soulstone.

Or, instead of the item being account based, they could be one time use only...and really really expensive?

  27. Turdnugget

    Turdnugget Guest

Dunno how many people would go for that... Take meditation to 120 (pretty easy) then swap it for taming...

Maybe make it so that you get half of what was on the stone or 3/4 of it?

So instead of getting the full 120 skill, you get say 80 instead. That way you can't work up super easy skills and then swap em out for the really hard skills. Even if it did cost a boatload...

That was not a serious post!!!! It was however a political jab at all the people wanting a gold sink in a game!!!!

I am sorry but i do not think a game needs an economist to run. All economy's will reach a balance on how much people will charge VS what people will pay.

  29. That's not a bad idea!

Make it like 3:4 ratio, and it costs lots of gold. Like 500,000 gold per 10pts of skill converted. So converting, 100 pts would give you 75 points of skill, and would cost 5 mil.

That wouldn't be so bad to transfer 120 focus or something for 90 taming. It would still require that you work up to GM, but at least you wouldn't have to start from 0 (or 30 from NPC bought, or 50 from new characer + soulstone).

As long as the item was:

    - only available from NPCs
    - non-transferable or account based
    - the gold used was actually removed from the game

    Think it would fly?

  30. This was seriously considered at one time, but in the way of using gold and resources as "upkeep" for your house. The coding was even started if I remember correctly. The point at that time was to make room for more players to place homes since every available spot was already taken on every shard... which is no longer the case. There was such a verbal player revolt that it was quietly dropped.

Of course, we are already "taxed" as in vendor fees.

  31. How about every time you used a soul stone there was a charge fee of say 10K per skill point to use it? That would slow down some of these instant skill swap characters.

  32. That still wouldn't fly for me. It would be too easy to abuse by scripting. And gold.. Don't even want to go there. Gold sinks are not the solution. For anyone who can't see passed that they don't fully understand the effects of duping/scripting/exploiters are making on the game.

There really isn't any single change in this game that can be made under current development that wouldn't benefit scripters and/or prevent them from scripting in anyway. The only "real" solutions would be to reengineer the client/system and make drastic changes that would not only prevent scripting but balance out economical crisis within the game. And if they did somehow manage to gather funding for that project, they wouldn't just have to rebalance those issues but just about every issue in UO in general, otherwise it wouldn't even be worth the investment.

Insurance has a noticeable benefit to the player. What benefit would taxes have other than "helping the UO virtual economy"?

The benefit of insurance is that the player keeps (ie doesnt lose) his or her items. The benefits of house tax to the player would be that he/she didnt lose their house. Simple as. People cant use the "tax isnt fun argument" whilst they are all happily paying insurance, which again, isnt fun.

    no, no, NO, NO!

How would a house tax help in the slightest? If its large enough to make an effective gold sink for the wealthy, it's just going to destroy the average players, amplifying the divide between gold farmers and people who just play to have fun.

Don't make gold sinks into treadmills or you're just going to drive people away.

  38. I don't recall ever having my house in my backpack when I died, nor do I recall any time that my house was ever attacked by a monster. For that matter, it does't come when I say "all follow me" either.

A house is a posession just like any other item, not something to have a useless tax placed on. You pay hundreds of thousands of gold building it, that's enough cost to be placed upon ownership. Anything else would just keep less fortunate players from being able to own one.

And paying insurance in a game is real good fun isnt it. Once again ... you cant be a hypocrite by playing the "i dont want taxes in a game" card when you already pay insurance in a game. Im not arguing that houses should be taxed ... what im saying is that there is no diference fun factor wise in paying tax or insurance .. .as in real life neither are fun to pay so dont try and base your argument on the "not fun" basis.

My only thought is that you're a troll that doesn't play the game...

It's a shame that EA actually listen to this. Most people such as myself who have been playing mostly solo never have accomplished such high levels of loot simply because
    1. Insurance cost money
    2. Melee is somewhat difficult
    3. Monster loot after repairs, potions , petals, insurance , enchanted apples , buying better armor was never all that good.

The biggest problem with the economy is duping and sense they have never fixed that issue , I see no problem with the changes. Infact I can hit Balrons now and come out with a decent profit for once

I applaud the change. Most people were't packin 100's of mills from melee gains

Yep, we need more goldsinks. An effective goldsink, to me, meets the following criteria:
    * Costs a significant amount of resources
    * Rewards the contributor with something that doesn't affect gameplay (hair dyes, etc)

If the reward is exchangeable to other players, and has a monetary value, then its not really a goldsink, its more like a government bond without the interest :)

And read my lips: no new taxes

  44. Didn't Bill Clinton say that right before he raised taxes in his first year?
