So goofing around Yew gate I got to talking to a few people I have known for a very long time and who I would consider to be reliable sources of info.

They tell me that a team is working on a new UO redone in minecraft. All the areas, housing towns. NPCs and much more.

The design of minecraft seems fitting for UO, just the look and feel.

I think this is an awsome idea and the possibilites are endless.

Anyone have any further info or heard anything about that?

Other than my research on Minecraft after hearing this I have never played (desire but just have not yet)

Does anyone who has played minecraft have any opinions on this?

Damn. That flashed me back to the old Doom Texture Mapping Engine.

    Not like.

i play minecraft its a lot of fun, you can create any structure you can imagine, just have to farm up the materials which doesnt take too long to do

There's something in Minecraft that's very important to MMORPGs in general.

When you make something in Minecraft, you get a pop-up with a bunch of boxes in it, and you put the required resources in the boxes. There are more boxes than required resources, and I think it expands even if you fill the boxes.

Now I haven't played it, this is just from watching videos and my assumptions.

But this is something I've always felt very strongly about. Mystery. And mystery in making things from other things. I mean, who doesn't want to be able to make discoveries and advances in the science of making things? Especially in a game of fantasy magic (or sci-fi futuristic worlds).

With a system like that, a game can hide a lot of trade secrets.
Mine ore and smelt iron, work the iron to steel by adding other minerals. The option of adding secret minerals for a discovery of a better steel. Or hide an even better result, a mineral that makes a worse steel, until you magic it in some special way.

My point is that one huge aspect of MMORPGs that's lacking is discovery. And as far as craft skills go, if there's the right system, a lot of mysteries can be dropped into the system, from different angles (material mixes, magics, production methods, etc.). But the game would have to leave each step open for trial and exploration, rather than the current recipes-in-a-gump systems.

  6. I play off and on with a few friends, I host a server and its actually an amazing game... creating anything you want.. farming the mats or even creative mode where you dont farm at all, just build and explore.

I've seen some pretty cool things made, just youtube Minecraft structures and see for yourself... and with all the mods you can do, its nice.

Some ppl even have servers they run that have guilds and pvp.. not quite the same as UO, WoW or anything out there.. but it is pretty neat :)

MC is a true sandbox, ala early UO. I haven't played it, but I know that it has really exploded. In my opinion, MC demonstrates that players still crave a true, uninhibited, sandboxy environment.

I play minecraft and have created and explored just about everything the game has to offer. I could definitely see some potential for creating a UO mod. However, someone would need the skill, time, and desire to do so. In it's current state, minecraft can become quite boring after playing solo for a while. It's an adventure with multiple people.

This is one of the reasons I really enjoy Magicka, the various combinations of the elements can throw up some interesting results and they never told you what did what other than the simple things so you were left to discover them - sometimes completely by accident. Minecraft however I never got the bug to play that where most of my friends have and play it quite a lot.

Yeah, it's irritating when you read developers or other people in the gaming industry claiming that the sandbox is dead, people don't like it, they want things given to them in a predictable manner, when MC is proving them all wrong and making a lot of money at the same time

A lot of people have something to sell. And they are very hardcore.

I started playing Minecraft waaay back when it was just starting to catch on, and one of the first things I thought when I started was how close it felt to the early days of UO. It's a really fun game, and a blast if you play it with other people. Plus, it just got a huge Adventure update!

My son has made some amazing things on minecraft and they even have an app for it on one of the phones. (which he just asked for tonight) What I like about it is the use of their imagination of building things, making forts to protect you from "The Creepers!!!" when the sun goes down. The way the sun actually goes down! and the moon comes up!
