Yes... because typing is slow... and if you're trying to type in the middle of the fight while the enemy has voice comm... you're screwed.

agreed youre going to get smoked before you can type out what the problem is. so if you're pvping with a group of people it would be a crime not to at least be in the vent. otherwise its not as necessary just depends on what your preference is

Aye it facilitates in game fights and some events. Often though what is going on in vent has very little sometimes to DO with Ultima Online..more just online folks goofing off telling jokes playing rock music to each other ...and yes some information on what they fighting. But it also is more like some personal chat club of real time bsing fun often more rl than in game stuff. . sort of like a *chatty club* [IMG]

I swear IF I could be in vent I may just plague them all with blasting Yanni music just to say hello I am here suffer this music you hear in my background ! HAHA

But to me vent is utterly anti roleplay and yes it excludes folks *like me and others* from real time information cuz them in vent oft forget us...thus we left out ... a lot ! [IMG]

Originally when KSS tried Vent for patrols and pvping that part of use of vent was ok said Py but he did not like it for roleplaying a knight and so forth in the end we he chucked vent, it was too much out of context of game and roleplayin he said they all talk real talk and rl sometimes and well...that is not Sosaria nor Britannia. One then would have to juggle both at same time if one truelly wanted to *roleplay in vent* ya would have to speak like a vampire or a knight or and who would do that often. Vent is rl voices..not roleplay in game...nor even typing *speaking* in game.

Py did not like it per say save for patrols and when he was making the decision I was VERY glad in the end he and many others in KSS veto'd vent..for IN GAME speaking and acting and roleplaying even fighting in the end they quit the vent..just was not UO *in vent* like it was meant to be.

But now everyone probably uses it 24.7 like being on the *radio* in game with each other like folks babble in their 18 wheelers .. [IMG]

I often RP in game and just be silly with whoever seems to be around; you can't emote nor act over vent. Just because your in vent don't mean you won't RP. Yes vent is crucial for comunication during spawns or PvP, it is also a way to keep tabs on your guildies when your off doing your own thing.

  15. Its kinda hard to type and run/fight at the same time.

Its also hard to Rip on your buddy with the correct amount of sarcasim and annunciation in alliance chat.

And how would we have ever found out Balki was really a Girl if we couldnt have heard her voice?

Plus all the chit chat we get in vent can sometimes be rather entertaining.

One or two exceptions to the norm...and I would not get to *hear* him anyhow.

Vent just enables folks to communicate often ONLY there not even in alliance or guild chats to the exclusion of ..the have nots. . which is very difficult for those few to always have no choice; but to be so excluded day in day out by everyone else,

cuz they in vent talking there and often ONLY there, with each other ya say hi in guild or alliance chat ..get no response unless you read someone say...GET IN VENT. bout it. not even a hi back in chat on guild or alliance they said it to us in vent..which they forget we can not be on...soo ............. [IMG] ya look for some few in same boat somewhere, to hang out with in a multiplayer game that only speak to each other in vent only most of the time so ya look for one or two if lucky to find em, that speak to ya *in game* wherever ya find them, cuz ya are left with no choice.

yall have no idea how isolated one is made to feel by everyone nearly all in vent only often, when some few of us, can not have or BE in vent on this shard, you are left alone and isolated barely see to *read* a hi to us, many a night.

QZ you're kind of trying to have it both ways. [IMG] If you want to ensure a strict RP experience, than yes, you'll mostly not approve of vent...... but if you're worried about being isolated and not having people to talk to then maybe it's time to bite the bullet and hop in vent?

    Nay, for several reasons.

Firstly, given the vast expanse of water betwixt myself and the portals to the land, these arcane devices make my movements even slower than they already are.

Secondly, unless they are occupied with their training, I have two young squires charging about the place, making vast amounts of background noise. Then, there are the occasional outbursts from my good lady scribe, bellowing at said squires, when their behaviour is...less than desirable. That limits the number of hours I could make use of the aforementioned devices.

Thirdly, tis hard enough for this old man to focus on what is happening before him, what with voices from party, alliance, guild, and arrows whistling about his ears, without adding more voices to keep track of. I fear my skill in focus is not what it once was, and I am easily enough distracted by yon two squires. More voices in my ears would render me utterly confused and I would probably end up attacking the trees about me, rather than the foe!

Still, there may be solutions to the above issues. I will think on these things.

Truth of the matter is, IF I could be in vent with my connection I probably would not find it appealing ie vent is anti roleplaying *in game*. . would be nice if all those IN vent could stand at a bank, or a meeting or sometime during their playing day and fathom they are excluding those not in vent and just wtf say hello IN GAME sometimes gasp actually type it when not fighting not pvping not in any situations that vent be more logical to utilise they STILL in vent like it is more of an addiction for them to be in 24.7 even when not fighting, than being in Ultima Online itself is.

I mean seriously even at a bank they may be speaking only... *in vent* that is kinda pathetic ya know... ;( wtf just go on vent then ..they not *playing the game* either they playing chatty cathy singles clubs, in vent.. even at banks not being IN game even there at a bank, in game 'talking' happening rarer and or .. hardly ever at all anymore..ie no balance of their IN vent and out of vent thus in Ultima online *(speaking)* to others.

ok for some silly reason that comment of yours made me laugh..made me think of all three of my grown kids this past dec.

When my monitor burnt this past dec. 19, the kids were calling home pre christmas to check on what lil goodies I may still want as gifts from them.

I told them each... "my monitor just torched'

Each grown adult kid said to me..

"Just get online mom and order you up a new monitor "

    I said to them each........................DOH !!!

Obviously ye hightechies are not quite fathoming the problem here [IMG] I said my monitor DIED burnt...um how ya figure I just jump in there and get ONLINE to order me up a new one ? [IMG]

they each said..............ummmmmmmmmmmmmm OH DOH !

I said oh now ya getting it huh ? [IMG]

Somethings sometimes one 'can NOT' do even if they wanted to do so...helps if others can SEE that the issue might be to see it from where they are standing ya know...others forget those of us whom *cant* be in vent thus exclude us even by a fricken bank they *(in vent)* yakin away like old ladies IN VENT, never in game, even at banks sometimes often, sooo many of ..yall never quite... GET IT ! [IMG] It is like similar to.. *my monitor burnt../oh just order up a new one online mom* um sure thing [IMG]

*has vague memories of a Dilbert cartoon involving not being able to log on, and being told to email tech support*

But, think of this, as well: One or two lone roleplayers in the midst of a group of non-roleplaying venters (if that's the term for vent users?) ventees? ventites? ventlings? I may be wrong, but I picture many, many conversations including lines such as "speak english!!!" or "wot him say?!?" or "get to the point!!!!"

A bit like having William Shakespear suddenly appear as the DJ at a night club, I'd imagine....

No...because my ping in ventrilo is about 300 [IMG]

If I was in a part of the world where internet connection is much faster though, I'd definitively use it for team action, as it's much faster for other people to talk than to type what they need to communicate.

  28. I love vent, specially when uo boring we just hang out talking. i dont think id be able to play without vent now. and when fighting makes knowing whats going on alot easier then having to read text.

  29. Well my overall opinion on vent is it can enrich RP game play. When i joined GIL and went to a spawn with my alliance friends and we were kicking the beast to the curb as it were the majority were using vent and being very effective in the spawn. I was not in vent because well I did'nt know what vent was . And at one point I complicated matters because I got in the way and my friends well died then res'd and had to do it all over again. My point is i could'nt hear them and they did'nt know that i had never been to a spawn before and I did'nt know what to do . I was and still am *smiles at Rilla* a total noob. The chat window did'nt help they did'nt respond very well in chat and so well I left the spawn that day. It was only later that my friends told me about what happened in the vent. Needless to say I like using vent now that I got it to work finally. My point is the chat feature is'nt very effective. Good but it could b better. Vent brought me closer to my friends and alliance members. So I chose vent [IMG]

*laughs* so true ye wait till your kids grow up and pull that on you too. [IMG] course with some of these *modern* kids I swear they will starve to death if their *electric can openers and microwave ovens fail to function on em cuz they forget how to DO anything without electric appliances and Mc Donalds for fast food. [IMG] *or vent at a bank when they do not NEED vent there, yet it becomes ALL they remember TO use*

    [IMG] Sup' Thou ? lol

On Chesapeake where there IS more mega roleplaying roleplayers, whom all have vent like PaxLair 5 cities big there, yet AT a bank, AT a meeting they are NOT in vent and do say hi *out of vent* and still I often use a roleplaying *dictionary* which QZ there uses as *translator* for them with the ROXXORSJOO that DO talk in game...comically bridging the gap of *in game talkers that rpl and don't roleplay but DO also remember to talk IN game ...to other players often enough.

So like the *mega roleplayers* run into someone talking *uber 733t* talk and they hear my book in backpack turning pages as I shout.. "oh according to my royal dictionary of multilinquists.................... I ROXXORSU is a jubulant way of saying.............I AM VICTOR ........and yu suxxors is their way of saying ...they fought better than ye.... most just laugh as I use me handidandy *dictionary of uber 733t street speak* ..but then THEY also *talk in game* not just in VENT all the time. Thus making it possible to include everyone sometime or another... in convos in game between em all and many of them both DO use vent *too* but not as their ONLY way to communicate with everyone all the time only !

I have not been quite able yet to do Shakespeare to it...

but I have been able to do Poe to 733tspeak via....RAP !

course doing it to Bianary like Sio used to do ..I still canst not achieve.. that, would take a math pervert loving math loving %%%%% item game I guess. hehe

Soooooooooooooo, anyhow I guess I am weirdly rplingly cross cultural linguistic, ie.. weird in my own ways..*out of vent*

Yeh, precisely my point..so a person looks for those whom do not use it so much to all the time 24.7,

just to have someone to *type talk with in the game* anywhere they might find them or whom ever may remember to include' the nonventers via remembering to *talk* to/with them in game, cuz multiplayer gamer of one or 3, without vent, is normally forgotten thus, left extremely isolated.
