Vet Reward Cap vs Powerscroll Question

    Hi everyone-

I was a veteran of UO for about 7 years when I took a leave and came back about a year ago starting a new account.

I am a bit confused regarding powerscrolls and the skill cap increase provided as Vet rewards.

As I understand the vet reward increase program, when hitting each 12 month cycle your account (all characters) receive a +5 points increase in their skill cap. This means that your overall skill cap is increased from 700 to 720 (incrementally) through 48 months.

I just eclipsed 12 months on my account - so therefore my stat cap has been raised by 5.

With that said - does that mean that none of my characters can use a powerscroll that would increase the skill cap beyond 105 (wonderous scrolls only)?

Or does this mean that assuming I become a 7x GM that I could take (1) of those skills to 105 thus taking up the additional 5 points for skill cap?

    Thanks for your help

You can use powerscrolls at any age, even your first day of playing.

If you are 7xGM and still in your first year (still at the 700 cap on total skill) and ate a 110 magery scroll then to raise magery to 110, you would have to let another skill drop to 90.

However there are other tricks you can use thanks to items with +skill bonuses. Imagine you have 100 magery and a ring with +10 magery. Without eating any powerscrolls, the ring doesn't help because you are capped at 100 skill. After eating the powerscroll, wearing the ring causes your 100 magery + 10 for a ring is treated as having 110 skill.

    I hope this helps.

so based on that - having the vet reward increase - i wouldn't have to drop any of my 7x skills to 95 in order to be 105 in a skill i used a PS on....i would simply have 6 skills at 100 and 1 skill at 105?

    Correct.

Personally I design my characters around 6x120 skills in the back of my mind rather than 7x100 even though I've never actually "finished" one. However the most powerful templates in the game will have skills at a variety of different levels to squeeze in all the abilities they want to have.

I guess that's a great way to do it since you can effectively use jewelry to gain as much as a +15 in any skill....

    I appreciate the info Maplestone

And, with the proper skill-bonus equipment and powerscrolls, you can end up with a character that 3 or 4 x120, the rest at or near GM.

I personally use equipment on 3 of my characters to have between 790 and 810 total skill points, only 720 of which are "real" skill points, allowing me to construct characters with 2 120 skills, and 7 more raised to 85-100 with equipment.
