I rather like the idea of a Thumbs down and Thumbs up button..... especially if it's in a suggestion thread.

I agree. There is enough trolling already. Of course there would be those that would do nothing but go thread to thread to hit "dislike".

Agreed. It would probably be so overused, half the population might end up on Prozac, or just quit posting.

Disagree with all the previously stated reasons. There is enough trolling here already. People click "like" when they agree with someone or like what they say. A dislike button would be overused by people just looking to troll, for simply not liking the poster, or even for no reason whatsoever.

    Truth.
Fact is some people use the "like" button in just that way. Someone posts something rude against someone you dislike. "Like" lol... sad but true story.

The 'thumbs up-thumbs down' that many websites have is used to move good information to the top and less useful information to the bottom. Stratics doesn't have that ability so a dislike button would be pointless. I don't even see the need for a 'like' selection here. It does not really do anything.

Another forum I use has a whole stack of options under posts, like, dislike, agree, disagree, hug, laugh, thanks, yay, and more. I miss them when I come here, they are a great quick way to agree/disagree or give thanks quickly. They actually give you the opportunity to disagree or agree with someone, without having to post and have others troll and flame you in return.

If I have the option of someone a) clicking dislike on all my posts or b) trolling and flaming me with actual posts whenever I post something. I'd pick a. I can't imagine any situation where I would want things to be longer and more unpleasant than they need to be on a forum. Especially if it deters some from posting where they know the fallout is going to be nasty. I'd rather those posters had the option to quietly express an opinion without always raising their head into the full fire of Uhall. Iif someone posts in disagreement and we can all like their post, it's no worse if we dislike your posts directly instead :D

It is not trolling if someone dislikes you, or your posts. Even if they do it whenever you post. They just don't like you. Take them off the Christmas card list and carry on as normal. At least if they do that they aren't wasting a moderator's time, or upsetting you in new ways by posting something more offensive and annoying in longhand. And they're not wasting your time by drawing you into a full fight.

So yes, I want more buttons too. Not voting threads up or down, I'm not into that. But just being able to quickly respond to posts without jumping into the fire or setting one directly would be fab IMHO. Add them to the forms when folk complain about posts then mods can hit dislike and hug when someone dislikes being disliked *grins madly* Yes, I'm being silly again. But I think it's a bit silly that we have to do things in longhand which are less pleasant than the shorthand alternative. If we can be trusted to type it in longhand, I don't really see why we can't have a button for the same thing.

There shouldn't be a "Dislike" button, but it would be interesting if it required making a reply first (deleting the reply would of course have to delete the rating).

The only reason I would support a dislike button would be to reduce the trolling and multi-page getting the last word wang swinging contests. I ask myself would trolls and the obsessively contrary trade a bitchy post for a bitchy dislike? I can't imagine that they would.

Viper09 made a solid point about using the like button as a way to agree with someone that trolled another poster. So then, why do we have a like button in this forum? It serves no real function, does it? I can see where it may have a use in the subforum where the Developers are asking for game ideas and such. Otherwise it's really pointless.

To feel that you take part in a discussion is very important for everybody people do not waste time creating threads and reply to others without any confirmation that someone is reading what they post
Trolling and extreme opinions will always grab alot of attention I think the LIKE button is a way to reward people that play nice and maybe reduce trolling

That wasn't my point at all. My point was that people "like" a post that they agree with. I do that all the time when I don't feel like posting "I agree." It looks like a lot of people do that too (case in point, the first post here).

Flutter was the one that pointed out that some people also use the "like" function on posts that troll people.

I would have just liked your post but since it's worth nothing to you I didn't :(
But I would have, because I liked that you pointed out that it could work both ways, except then I realized it really doesn't.
Poo made a post today about how he had a bad day and enjoyed coming here and finding Leurocian's rendition of "Stones", people liked that post. It was a good post. Folks don't need to respond to him and say "I agree, I enjoyed it too". They can just "like".
A dislike button would give people a chance to dislike this post. And people would. Some for no reason other than to try to get my goat.
I love my goat. I am not going to let anyone get it, but why afford others such a big opportunity to try?

 Your concern would be sweet if I thought you meant it. I wouldn't be reading Uhall if I had any reaction to negativity lol. But I'm a mod, so while I find some trolls and flames amusing, few of them make a positive contribution to the forum or community. So any method that I think will cut down on bad community interaction gets my vote. Simple as that. It's a great time saver if you want to respond to someone quickly while you're working and then give them a longer response later when you have time. If someone is spoiling for a fight, then a button response leaves them without the text ammo they can use to start a fight and draw others into a derail.

Goats rock ;) But I'm honestly curious, if someone is able to either like a post that dislikes the OP, or they can simply post in longhand "dislike" how is it different if they can use a button too? I've probably been on another forum too long and gotten too used to these buttons, but I really don't understand why saying it with a button would harm goats. Unless you wire the button up to shock the goat when someone dislikes a post, but that's just mean.

To me it's just a quick way to let someone know what you think about a post and you've got the option to say more after that.Especially if you come in to a thread a bit late and you don't want to go back and multi quote a bunch of users. Then you can go back and respond on their posts and just reply to the most recent ones. Though most of the buttons are positive so the full options are disagree, aww, groan, yay, laugh, hug, agree, like and thanks. I think a disagree is probably better than a dislike if some are bothered by that word. Or just replace it with a purple vortex llama instead.

I think we also need a goat button now :D

What are your thoughts on this sort of system, which integrates with a reputation measure? Some other communities use this kind of thing.

A dislike button could actually curb trolling a bit.

Some potential trollers may just use it instead of taking the time to actually write the troll.

Either way I think it would be a good addition and anyone not liking it for no other reason then it is the opposite of 'like' and appears negative to them is way too sensitive to be posting on public forums in the first place imo.

I guess it could also act as a kind eBay style feedback for those using the boards to trade high value in game items.

    +1 for the dislike button.

It could work, as long as we can see who's "disliking" as well as "liking." I don't know moderators' workload right now, but they should expect to have to take action against those who'd abuse "Dislike" to troll or follow someone around. If anyone else is familiar with the cesspool that Yahoo News user comments can become, it's apparent that some people just want to be buttheads. There can be posts like "Let's all pray for that kid's recovery" with 5000 thumbs up and yet 10 or 20 thumbs down.

    lol witch hunt!

well, I have been an asshat in the past, so I'm sure a lot of people don't like me. I've tried to change my ways a little :( especially regarding fel/tram stuff. if I may indirectly apologize for being bitchy in the past about it. but! I'm sitting on 512 likes! the last achievement I have left is to get to 10,000 posts, I think. so...if you guys allow dislikes...please include achievements ;)...I need something else to do! jk

hmmm.... I wonder if any potential abuse might be avoided if, in order to have one's rating of someone else's post actually count and show, one be required to publically post/explain exactly why one did or did not like the post in question. With those requirements, perhaps frivolous or trollish raters might not even bother?

On second thought, why not leave things just as they are now? Rate it if you especially like it, and respond if you have something to say either way. That might also save the Stratics staff a good bit of time and work on something that may not necessarily be an improvement.

I thought about this, but perhaps the explanations would be: "Dislike reason: dumb post, dumb poster."

What if a negative post rating negatively affected the accuser's reputation? Or perhaps negatively affected it when a user's positive-to-negative ratio exceeded X%?

Yes, this is why - although I initially rather liked the format you showed us - I'm having second thoughts about it. Personally, I think the motto, "If in doubt, don't" might be applicable here. :)

P.S. What we have now seems quite good, actually, without any dislike options other than posting.
