We need a Player Design contest for dungeons

  1. Not a new layout for the dungeons, but new monsters and challenges in each one.

    Shame is my favorite dungeon and I think one of the best laid out and themed... elementals from top to bottom, and progressively harder as you go down levels. Well, the problem is after years of improved skills, skill scrolls, better weapons and armor, it's not much of a challenge. I still like going through from top to bottom, but it really isn't that hard any more. Most of the old original dungeons are like that, or really not well thought out for content.

    The developers are busy with SA, bug fixes and balances, and from reading Stratics there are a lot of very creative people playing the game. I would like to see player ideas for content improvements (rather than new walls, layout, etc.) that would breath life into my old (and some new) favorite places to go, and create new challenges for anyone from newbie to old grizzled hardened maxed out warriors.

    The let EA pick the top 3 for each dungeon, and give it to the people to vote on. It would be fun.

    Have they put up the new Brit Banks yet? I don't think so. If they have, I'd like to see a contest for new Stables in Vesper. Once that's done, then I'd like to see this one too, but that's third on my list, I guess.

    Let them finish implementing the WBB designs before they have new contests......

  7. That's not the most efficient way to plan projects and changes.

    Ideally, that should have nothing to do with this. The bank designs should be finished way before developers would have anything to do on changing dungeon design. The player input would take a few months during which the banks should be finished. THEORETICALLY the bank designs are finished and just need to be locked in place. heh

    While the "legacy" dungeons might not be a challenge for some, there are still challenging areas that you can explore (namely the Prism of Light, Sanctuary, Twisted Weald, the Citadel, and the Palace of Paroxysmus). They might not be along the lines of what you want, but they still afford a challenge to solo players and small groups.

    As for a contest to come up with new content, I doubt something like this would work; mayhap a contest to design a new dungeon, or redesign an area of a current dungeon would be better.
     
  9. Ya, perhaps... I want to see "improved" content for the old dungeons, not just new dungeons like we will get with SA. The Virtue dungeons are definitely stale and for the most part deserted. The perfect dungeon would be a challenge for all skill levels, which I don't think we have.

    Yes! There is an insane lack of waterfalls and gardens in UO's dungeons!

    I think this would be a great idea but I think maybe we should not ask for them to put more on their plates ATM they need to get SA done and implement the bank designs not to mention other bugs and such that I think should come first in other words I would like to see what we have fixed and put into good working order before we add more !
    But then I would support this idea 100%

    I know It would not take long to change the spawning nodes and such but just to clarify I mean things like back ground story line etc and also would not want to see the old monsters and such completly wiped out and changed like they did with wrong (I think it was wrong)

    What if instead of the current dungeons, there's a design contest for the new SA dungeon? Or if that's already done up, then for the next expansion?

    Instead of taxing out their own design team, they can have hundreds of ideas/submissions, then pick/choose the best or even combine the parts they like. Winners gets a prize, or even have the dungeon named after them, or a plaque with their names : Dungeon discovered by XXX and XXX.



    Devs gets more ideas, and 1 less troublesome area to work with. When writing mods, I find the initially designing phase the hardest part. Just finding the inspiration for 1 design (how should it look like, what should it have etc) may take me days of staring at the ceiling. Once that's done, you'll realize, crud...I still have to do the exterior...

    That's just me though, I've seen people with actual talent like the missus that can come up with new designs every single day...



    Players gets thrilled that their efforts and actions actually changes and impacts the world.

    I'm definitely 100% behind the idea of the old dungeons getting redesigned in terms of spawn but I don't know whether I would maybe rather the devs just looked at it themselves rather than leaving it in the hands of players...

  22. This would work for me also... but it isn't happening at all because of all the other changes being worked on. It wouldn't happen over night, but looking at other player created designs of houses and even other games, there is a lot of ingenuity out there -

    after all, Devs were people too once upon a time!

    Check it out chuckles......we have dungeons with clearly visible traps. What the hells that all about? Some pit falls would add some danger, and for the love of mike, dim the lights already. It's bad enough every player HAS to have night sight (spoiled), at least dim it so it looks and feels like a cave.

    Have players slip on bat dung, vomit even, at the stench.....if the devs are gonna keep us from performing due to lack of food, or even get poisoned (internal health issue), then all aspects should come into play.

    Whens the last time a player backed off an ogre lord due to it's disgusting, gut wrenching, breath??

    Komodo dragons can kill you hours after you flee because of all the bacteria in their teeth........why not a drake bite in destard?

    Too many possiblilities. Too much lack of imagination from todays devs....sorry guys, it's societies fault, not yours.

    Does anyone but me remember that the dull copper elementals in Shame used to explode when they died, often killing the warrior who had been fighting them.

    Back when I was a newbie training swords on Europa, late 2000, maybe very early 2001. Shame was interesting back then. If you weren't careful near the kraken it would come out of the water and chase you too. There was just one spot where the rock was low enough to the water. :D

    I would let the EMs do it. They are somewhat trained and should have a contest amongst themselves, or each be given a dungeon on their shard to spruce up.

    Otherwise players, too. Sure, sounds good.

    I think this is a great idea.

    I would go one step further and have players design all the stuff in game since they do it faster and better, anyways.

  35. Ya... I have to agree with you on that. Say what we want about EA and QA testing, but no way for players to do this properly on such a large scale.
