we had some real screamers discussions going today.

im trying to think what else we can chuck onto the fire and keep it going!

    i love open heated discussions!

    live for them infact!

on a totally unrelated topic, did anyone get the Act II stuff done before they kill(ed) it?

all the collectors out there kill the Grave Diggers and get their Meer and Juka mage and warrior statues?

i know i had to power game killing those buggers last 3 nights to get all mine!

I hate to break it to you, but nothing will top the Ultima Franchise Producer ending a letter to the UO community by asking them to play a different game, LOL.

Somebody should photoshop a picture of Fonzi from Happy Days on water skis around Scalis, because that's what happened tonight. If you get the reference, congratulations, middle-age is around the corner.

If you want more UO, then take Jeff's advice:
You can only get more UO if you give them what he needs to convince the high level execs that the market wants it.

    Don't get me started Woodsman...
I shouldn't have to sign up for something I am not interested in to convince high level execs anything. I pay for 5 accounts a month for over 10 years. A couple of them for 15 years. That should show my support for UO.

so i went over to the Origin web site and was gonna pick up one of those flower bed x 3 packs, then i got to thinking.... i dont know what they are giving out for the 15 year anniversary.
then i thought, well hell, they wouldnt put them for sale THEN give them to us a couple weeks later.... would they?

then i remembered the legacy tokens we got a few years back that had a mess of stuff in them you could get.

so then i left the web site and now im bored because i had allotted this time to planting 27 plants.
so i have 5 more minutes to kill until i can move onto my next thing.

I will say this Lady Storm. You and I may disagree on things, but given the tens of thousands of dollars you have spent on UO, you deserve better. I'm not being snarky or poking at the dev team. Out of everybody who posts on Stratics or plays UO, you truly deserve much better than you are getting, because I have heard people talking about somebody that I believe is you in-game, and you are a good person to have supported UO in the manner in which you have.

I am paying to play UO. I am not being paid to advertise UO.

EA is one of the biggest gaming companies in the world. They have a marketing department. Bioware-Mythic might get only a small cut, but I refuse to believe that any sub-company of EA would be denied a marketing budget. How much marketing do they do? None. I have done my best to convince friends to play this game, and all my good words mean nothing when they come up against a wall of developer anti-communication, uninspiring home-pages, terrible account management sites sites and a total lack of promotional material to get them excited about the game, even leaving aside the 90s-era graphics and steep learning curve that might be detrimental to UO or part of its charm (depending on who you ask). I "support" the game as best I can with my monthly subscription and by telling people they should play it. My individual word of mouth is more advertising than the company has "wasted" on UO in the past five years.

I get angry when I come on UHall and see people saying "Well if you want more people to play UO, it is your responsibility to tell people to play it!" It is not my responsibility. This game is a business, run by a company, some of whom are paid specifically to promote it. I'm not one of them. If the Franchise Producer is going to start feeding the flames by mimicking the "UO CAN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT" propaganda, he is failing at his job. UO can survive without its players badgering their friends constantly to play it like human versions of those Evony banner ads. UO cannot survive without a long-term business model, frequent and well-promoted updates, a reasonably sized dev team, decent communication between the developers and the playerbase, and basic advertising both online and elsewhere.

ETA: If I seem unusually angry, it's 50% this, and 50% because I had to refresh this page 22 times before it would load for me.

    Who's Fonzie.
No really. I'm blown away by being asked to play another game on my primary game's website.. after being told "they are two very different projects run by two different teams". I want to support the games I play. I also expect when I go to the game's website I not be directed to sign up for another game by the game's producer. I specifically asked him if he was still a UO producer just to be sure. He is in fact.
If you go to TSW website you wont find Tornquist suggesting people give Age of Conan a try. This is like that time we got Warhammer disks with our Third Dawn disks (or was it Blackthorn's Revenge).

You guys have to remember something.. the average EA executive is a simple creature (I just hope my co-workers dont read this), he (or she) dosnt care about the past numbers of players or how much XX has spent in the past. What they care about is getting a title out as fast as possible with minimal outlay and maximum return. For example when you go infront of a submission board and try to 'sell' a game idea. They couldnt care less what it looks like, what it will do etc... What they want to know is $$$$$$ and if it dosnt look like it'll make a heavy return or if it costs them too much then they'll say no. However if they see the Ultima franchise delivering a good player base then the prospective game designer/producer has a case to argue that investing in a new title would bring decent returns and could in theory increase the market share. Sadly any MMO now would have to fight WoW (The combat simulator designed for the simple minded... and no I'm not saying the people who play it are simple I'm saying that they've KISS'd it... Keep it Simple Stupid) which is a pain as when they made the WoW MMO they forgot the RPG part of it and thus we have a combat simulator worth millions.

Argue all you like, but what you've paid in the past, what you've done in the past means NOTHING right now to the submission board... its what you do NOW that means everything. Its pretty simple and you can argue all you like.. it isnt going to change any time soon (especially with EA).

I'm just going to say that the FUTURE of the Game I love UO.... does NOT look bright to me.

What have I to look forward to? Some pixel crack before years end for the anniversary and Holidays and then what??? Something new? Something that's going to last thru the bug fixing publishes coming next year(Because I really want those trust me).... but I"m VERY concerned that without something going on in-game and not just the occasional EM event..... Something tangible to keep folk like me with ADHD occupied that is NOT another grind fest.... I'm afraid people with less stamina than I will wander away from UO.

How many more folk flocking away will it take to start putting UO in the Red? 100? 200? Folk need something in-game to keep them occupied. They need the DEV's to let them know that something truly exciting is coming... They need some sort of outlook for the future of UO... UO's future right now doesn't make me need shades. Infact I may have to go get my microscope to see it. Horton may just be the only one to hear its "Whoo HOOO".... you get what I'm trying to say here?

I don't worry about me I'm so in love with UO I can't leave it. I'm an addict and I haven't had any desire to quit.... What I do have a desire for though is to stop playing UO like a soloist and have folk excited to play with me again... I'm tired of trying to get folk excited about doing things in-game. It's like pulling teeth so most my time anymore is spent all by myself... and I keep wondering if I'm going to be spending sooo much time playing all alone in my MMORPG why am I not just playing a soloist game like Baulders Gate??? Still haven't finished that... What makes me log in here everyday to the same depressive lonely world???

It's that hope that I might log in and my friends will be there wanting to go do things again. It's that hope that I'll log in and have to "save the day" once again. Britannia will need me...Is there some RP I can squeeze out of this?

However... Of late there are few left who feel as I do... Something new gets put in game and they want to know... How can I be the first to get one? How can I be the only one able to get these so I can sell them for a HUGE profit and make billions of gold..... How can I exploit this to my own advantage and stick it to my fellow players... What is it what's it worth and how much can I bilk my fellow players for?

And then folk wonder why the rest of us no longer care to do things for others... or with others... Greedy SoB's just make me sick. Tired of folk ruining my game play so they can make a buck... Can't do things in-game anymore because they've had to ruin things so that they stop the scripters...... but instead of putting in some code to alert them that someone is mining or lumberjacking 10 to 20 hours a day everyday for weeks on end they have to randomize all the ore and wood so folk like me can't go out and get just what we need no we have to attempt to find it hour after hour or .... pay the guys scripting it ruining our game because we don't have hours on end to spend strip mining day in day out... just so we can get the 400 ingots of copper we need for that BoD we'd like to turn in... *sighs*.....

I could go on and on and on about things that are irritating me if you really would like me to Poo..... But I grow tired of saying it again and again and again.....

Oh and to be sure this is my post and all if I'm going to be telling all.... I'm going to shamelessly plug my #1 pet peeve once again in hopes that eventually someone on the DEV team will listen and Get'r Done.....

Please add more co-owner slots to the house sign so all my characters 56+ of them NO LONGER have to be just a friend in my own STINKING HOUSE!!!!!!!!!! I want to have friends at my house ....... I don't want to not be able to secure stuff in my own freaking house... I don't want to be unable to use a deed in my own freaking house... I'm sick and tired of not being able to set securities in my own stinking house... I'm tired of having to log out and log back in and remember what the FRELL account really owns which house... Tired of it... Want to be a Co-owner/Owner of all my homes on all my characters. So quit leaving me waiting and wondering if it's ever going to happen and just Do IT. Please.

Having worked for large companies, and having known people who worked at Origin, I understand what you are saying, and you are right, all of UO's past success means nothing these days. However, this is where I have a problem
I'm not interested in new titles. We can all go sign up for another game like Jeff asked us to, and if that game succeeds, Jeff gets what, more money for another game? How does that help UO? It'll be just one more game Jeff can ask us to support, to get more money for...yet another game.

After reading Jeff's letter a few times, I feel worse about UO's future than I did before, because reading between the lines, it sounds like he is unable to do anything for UO and that UO is in trouble, and he's just trying to keep the franchise afloat by getting us to play another one of his games in order to get more money for another Ultima game.

I don't know why Jeff brought up a UO2. After WAR crashed and burned, and SWTOR lost too many players, EA is probably done with MMORPGs. Mythic can't manage the games it currently has, and BioWare seems to be losing its way and is out of touch as well. And let's face, EA is not going to trust BioWare, not after all of the damage control EA execs have been engaging in for it.

As for NetDragon, they are dumping all of their money into mobile gaming. They are growing like mad in the Chinese mobile market. In the past two years, they've risen to like the number #1 or #2 game portal/platform for smartphones in China, even larger than iTunes. If I had the money and I could buy stock in them, it would be tempting. It's like Zynga, PopCap, and Gameloft all rolled into one. The MMORPGs they have out now are probably going to be the last desktop MMORPGs they do.

As much as I love UO, if they released a new MMO.. UO2 then I would switch over in a heartbeat... IF they added some incentives for all those who play UO. Its not becuase I want to move away from UO.. I firmly believe that the 15 year old core code for the UO server is too old. It constantly breaks and its difficult for a developer to fault find in a non-standard language that they've had to learn on the job.

I'm currently Senior Producer for a company that provides live action events and recently have started to put together a Game Design team for a project thats jointly based here and in the US. Its a serious pain in the arse as I'm having to learn crap that I've never had to deal with before.. and thats with standard code and documentation. I pity the Devs with the 15 year old code thats no-doubt got its documentation missing.

Double edged sword, however. By sticking with and supporting UO in its current state, you are also saying everything is fine, things are being handled wonderfully and Jeff, Mesanna and company are all doing their jobs well. Which at this point is all rather debatable.

The team as it stands now barely talks to their paying playerbase. The game is in pretty much maintenance mode. There is a problem with this game that goes all the way from the highest of involvement to Bioware/Mythic all the way down to UO's development team in that it seems only the actual players are passionate about it. There is no one who (imo) has any passion for Ultima Online except those who shell out 9.99-12.99 a month. And that is sad.

EA recently admitted that subscription based MMO's are a thing of the past. Do you want to know why UO will not join the ranks of F2P? Too many resources (in other words, money and manpower) to change into the proper format (because as we see the team is horrifically small anyways) and not enough current subscribers to support it. So they will steer the ship as the have the past few years, with no big plans, limited to no communication (since there is not much to talk about, anyways), and watch the playerbase dwindle until it reaches zero profit. Again, this is what is known as maintenance mode. If you think this game is on anything but you need to explore other onlines and see that the majority have teams that communicate and have publishes with depth to enhance gameplay on an ongoing basis.

As I've said in other posts, if you love this game and love logging in and love doing what you do, that is great. It is fulfilling all your entertainment needs. But I only ask that you also remain realistic about the situation... one that is not 'awesome'. When 'great things are coming around the corner' and 'this will be a great year' and 'support UO to get a UO2!' that is merely someone attempting to give the player base some but of hope that things get better. I can't believe I'm referencing this, but the Hunger Games (movies version, oddly enough) has a scene where the President is explaining to Wes Bentley's character that people always need a glimmer of hope, because even though it is false hope it is at the very least something to have them look forward to. That's kinda where we are now.

Anyhow, that's my .02 for what it is worth.

    :whip: Back to the picnic
Anyone up for lawn darts? oh and for desert I was thinking ice cream floats and apple pie ala mode.

*last word on this subject then I am done arguing with anyone including the dev for a few months* When I read Jeff's post I read what I took to beleave was a escape of the problem, he cant help you or I with. Swtor was EA's last hurah that failed miserably, but I could have told them that.... they didnt want to see the facts of whats happening. Phone games, tablet, and handhelds are sweeping the field clean. UO's fan base has no clue we are still around... I talked to a old friend who works for a major webmag on gaming, about UO and the gaming world in general. His words were very fermiliar, All the producers need is to send to them updates or message blogs on things for the game like our changes to dungeons or the big bash for the 15th. It will get a mention if not a write up and request for more.
Old players have begun to show up, many of them are from before AoS!! They read about how UO is soon to go 15 years old...... They were shocked we were still around.
I would love to play UO till i croak.... I dont plan to croak for a long time.... ribbit ribbit...:)
I wonder how many of us still have our icq lists .... many of us had friends we played with on them... many had e mails and addys for them... perhaps if we invite them back. Now I am not saying tell them we are super new and give them a big hype but challenge them to come back and try the game of today. Lets see if that macho pvp player of old still has the touch.... goat him! What UO lost over the years is its community in game. Many left for good reasons, some needed to go for RL reasons that had little to do with UO personaly. But they are not sure they need to return because of well lack of news and friends...
I dont tweet/twitter/facebook quite frankly I see all those sites as a threat to my security. Reasons being we have become too open about our lives to the public that its frighting if any real threat came along they got you pinned and traped. But If you do and are friends with old players reach out to them.... ask them to give uo a last shot...
Jeff wants us to commit to a different UO.... I say I want us to commit to our UO.
    :grouphug:
They say it takes a village to raise a child well it takes one to grow so hey fellow uo villagers we need more growth so get your icq logs out your old friends list and just ask them to retry us come back to our UO. I'd like to show Jeff he is dead wrong and our UO is where he should have supported.

I had way before the northridge eq a set of very rare china, russian crystal stemware from before ww1, and gold plated sterling flatwear. I did not let them sit in some china cabinet collecting dust. They got used for birthdays, wedding feasts, hollidays, and for special dinners with family and friends. What I am getting at is this:
We tend to save things of value and vertualy let them rot in some china cabinet... of our life. We have friends, relitives, co workers that have been in our lives for ages. Ask your best bud to come share a ale with you in a brit pub... and slay a dragon later... Ladys your sewing circle needs to tailor in Luna .....
Chefs boy do i have a recipy book for you! gather up the family and challenge them to a race around UO.
EA dont care but we do. So stop the I'll close down my accounts if they dont do this.....
We need to support our habit if we are to keep our habit.

Don't you think most passionate players have tried enlist their friends? I know I have. Just another post a few above has another poster saying the same thing.

Most players left for a reason. If they have no new reason to come back, trust me they will not for any extended period. 'It's even OLDER now' is not a great reason to return, trust me.

As an aside, the correct saying you reference is 'goad them', not 'goat'. Personally that sounds rather dirty. Not to mention that you tell people to get back on topic and then proceed into a long statement of your feelings on the topic you are asking others not to discuss.

    OH one last thing

UO is my drug of choice.....

yes its habit forming, but it cant give you cancer, or lung desease.

It can add to weight gain if your not carefull to stop once in a while to go do rl things like mow the lawn...

The benifits of UO are life long.... the friends and family time you spend with them over the years is worth its weight in gold.

Family can meet up in game no matter the miles inbetween you, country to country chat on phone cost more! For 12.99 a month (10.00 if you pay for hte 6 mo plan) you can talk , all you want to aunt sherry and get her to help you deco that new 18 plot you just got.

World peace.... come to uo and meet your neighbor! Brazil meet Russia GB meet Isreal Come on in and have a great time with the world at your door.

    UO is your oyster.....

So go grab some hot sauce and come slurp it up kiddos!

    Love
    MOM

From one lady to another ....... you dont know jack of what I mean. Goat is what i meant. Goats butt ppl in the back and push them... its just what i meant period. Nothing dirty aout it. As I said before it was my last word on the subject.... Some people are rather bad at conveing what UO has changed. I'd rather show them! And I have and many who saw the tour I did loved the changes. So far 2 of them have restarted to play. Its a start. I say to those who are doubtfull of old friends who quit for reasons not of RL concerns need to show not tell... a picture says alot.... Take for instance the em events.... My own nephew wondered if he could get on his account. This after he quit 8 years ago cause the game was dull. He is a single father of 2 boys under age 4 so has little time to play but ofcourse he can bring the boys over and romp on one of our comps while I romp with the boys !!! My son and he have plans to go t hunting...... Now thats progress!!!!

If Jeff wants UO players to support U4E then he and Mythic need to show a commitment to UO. That doesn't mean saying that exciting things are planned. We've been hearing that tired mantra for too long

One of the first things he brings up is the question of why BioWare is not putting more development effort into UO instead of putting those resources into U4E. He answers that with a marketing phrase that every generation deserves an Ultima game. It's a brilliant phrase that is meant to tug on the heart strings of Ultima fans but it doesn't actually address why BioWare has reduced the development effort for UO over the past few years. It merely deflects the discussion by claiming that other people deserve those resources instead because they deserve their own Ultima game.

I would actually not have a problem with the idea that every generation deserves an Ultima if the current Ultima was better supported. I have put many hours of work into supporting U4E. I believe U4E is BioWare's chance at doing something new with the Ultima franchise and while the platform, payment method, and style is not my first choice, I am realistic about the fact that it was the only way it could happen. If I didn't believe this I would not have worked on the U4E portion of Ultima Codex.

UO has far fewer resources than it did two years ago. It has fewer resources than it did one year ago. My feeling is that a year from now, it will have even fewer resources. The treatment of UO does matter. Given how poorly UO is treated, many people will assume that is how U4E will eventually be treated. You can't expect people to commit a lot of time and/or money to U4E if they believe it will eventually end up being treated like UO.

Jeff wraps his letter up by saying we need to support UO and U4E to give him, and I'm quoting him, "ammunition....to convince the higher level execs that the market is ready for more Ultima.".

I am saying to Jeff and BioWare that he needs to give us something in return. He needs to take care of the existing Ultima, Ultima Online, and it's community, if he wants to convince us to support more non-UO Ultima.

It's amazing how much this can be reversed. Since I've backed off UO and started back at the gym 4 times a week plus walking the dog twice or three times longer every day the spread wide disorder has been tamed.

    Lady Storm,

While I will agree UO is my Drug of Choice... I'll say this... trust me I have done all I can to bring back old friends. One thing I've always done is maintain my ICQ.... though I moved to Trillian ages ago for well better capacity to reach my kids... since they insist on using MSN (*gags*).... However this is what happens....

First off many left for major reasons, either in RL or in game... Some got Married and the significant others don't really appreciate you hanging about in a game all day... which I don't understand I mean at least you aren't fighting over wtf to watch on TV... so instead of plopping your A$$ in front of the Boobtube you plop it in front of your PC.... now I do see that some folk are "Jealous" of in-game relations.... which I've seen ruin more than one good marriage... something else to consider...

Then there are those who got hacked and quit because some pissant decided that it was a good idea not only to take everything they owned but to delete all the characters as well just to add insult to injury... and of course EA treated the victim as the criminal... basically saying well if you hadn't been cheating you couldn't have gotten hacked.... which is BS.... some of them all they did was register HERE on Stratics.... However they didn't realize that it's NEVER a good idea to use the same email you use for forums such as this for your UO accounts... Silly them for being trusting I guess...

Some tried to come back but were quickly overwhelmed by all the changes felt they couldn't keep up it would cost them too much $ to upgrade their accounts to have all the latest access's and such and they felt they were too far behind the curve to ever really "get back in" .... So they tried and left...

Many couldn't get over the "emptiness".... No one being around much anymore... They missed all those 100's of friends and all the RP and RPPvP of old and since much of that is gone these days or only on a few nights here and there they just couldn't do it... or they found that we have basically revolved much of the RP around the EM events which only happen one or two nights a week and when they do they are SOOO Many jerk-offs there spamming nasty stuff and saying terrible things to the EM's that they felt they totally couldn't follow along with WTF was going on ..... so they got frustrated and gave up.

Others just felt they were simply too far behind to figure out what is going on so they just couldn't participate in things.

More often then not though they have come back found the game to be all about greed and getting stuff and no longer about community and virtue and that sort that they just couldn't feel the community anymore and they left again..... can't say that I blame them. My own sense of community has only survived because I've expanded to include more than one shard, more than just the RP community and I've changed much of my gameplay to solo..... not for the love of playing solo but just for the love of the game and the desire NOT to go anywhere else... I just can't see that any other game offers what UO already gives..... and in this stage of the game I can't see investing in another game when I have SOOO VERY MUCH invested in UO. So if I act all angry and upset its not because I don't care about UO ...... it's because I really do care and I've invested quite a bit of time, effort, energy and money into what I love... and it's seriously ticking me off to see it going to heck in a handbasket... And I'm mad as heII and I'm just not going to stand by and not say anything or try to do anything about it.

This is deja vu. U4E and UO. Warhammer Warth of Heros and WAR.

I think EA should allow the community to contribute Art and Live Events. There are many talented developers and artists contributing to freeshards and Ultima community projects, otherwise all we will get will be EM Events and maybe a new graphic a month.

What are the odds that we could find comments from the Warhammer Franchise Producer directed at WAR players, asking them to support WOH? I bet they are pretty good.
UO doesn't get volunteers, remember? Even though Mesanna has claimed that Stratics is the "official" forums, which means that unless Stratics' staff are getting paid, they are acting as volunteers....hmmm...

I want to make a public apology to you.

I thought Jeff was sloppy with his wording. He's not. By bringing up UO2 out of thin air, and by saying he's not making an announcement today, he instantly floated the idea of a UO2 out there, and the gaming media picked up on it. The man knows what he is doing.

Looks like people have finally taken a breather and realized how good the letter really was. Jeff is probably laughing at the change in reaction since the release of the letter :)
