What happened to the humble warrior?

My friend wants to join UO after months of me pestering him but on the eve of him purchasing the game he wanted to know if he could create a 'conan' style warrior or an Elf bowman

I said yes to both, but then i realised that he's need either bushido or chivalry to have any chance of being effective as the humble warrior would be lucky to go toe to toe with an Earth elly :-(
So, that ended his interest, as he wanted to be a warrior not a paladin or samurai (altough i did try to convince him that he could roleplay a warrior/barbarian and still use chiv or bushido...

Why has the warrior become so innefective? why do i need bush or chiv to actually have fun (fight bigger monsters than an earth elly) ?
    Any solutions?

The warriors, instead of those skills, you max out anatomy, tactics, and take battle focus for mediation and stam regen and spam armor ignore and other specials. Health regen suit with mana regen on it aswell max dci. You should kill almost everything with that with healing. My brother has an elven archer with the same temp and does pretty well just with weapon moves.

Conan was also a thief (the Arnold Schwarzenegger version, anyway)

I suspect you exaggerate the 'problem'. It's harder with a specialised warrior, but it's not at all impossible to do very well indeed - as proved here

You don't need to have a Paladin or Samurai or anything special to have a good warrior. :)

No Tamer, No Samurai or Mystic ... And my lead only been increasing ;)

You just need to learn how to fight with it. And you don't learn that from looking at a bank or bash at a golem. :p

I don't have bushido, chiv, necro, spell, etc on my fencer and I went toe to toe with any of the paragon sifter critters without dying. Its about finding a decent suit and learning your character. The only healing I have is the skill itself :) Have him take parry and use a two handed weapon or shield - won't be as good as with bushido, but I do just fine without it even at only 80.

Making an old school axer myself also sometime down the road. To bad lumberjacking skill doesn't give all the dmg bonus it used to but still different. He be a straight warrior template though.

One thing to always remember, this is an online game. Things change. You make and play with what you like and stick to it or you do what many others do and follow the best current trend currently till it is nerfed and another one is found.

is it unreasonable to think a warrior would have the healing skill? If it is then maybe make a suit with enhanced pots, could prob do alright with the stat bonuses and healing pots provide.

The warrior isnt dead. The warrior just depends on slayers and extra items intstead of skill. My warrior can solo Rikktor and spawn, Spider boss and spawn, Undead Spawn, SA Dragon, and many more all done alone, Navery included. Try this temp and a lot of slayers, can also hold its on for pvp if you switch focus to poisoning. 120 Swords, 120 Tactics, 120 Parry, 120 Anatomy ,110 Healing 120 Focus (or 49.9 focus 80.1 poison for more pvp). Use enhanced aids, apples, potions or regens, trapped box, orange petals, and with the right weapons you can take on just about anything. Whirlwind slayers and longswords or Broads is my suggestions. Cleaver or Burcher Knife for pvp.

They really over-complicated the common warrior. These days, the only thing a humble warrior is good for is gold farming. You can whip on some Trogs pretty good but other monsters seem to ignore your natural skill quite often and can hit you/make you miss at will. In the 4 seconds it takes to apply that bandage, a small mob or tough monster can take you down to less than 50% of your health and once you reach that point, the AI is trained to chain events that will finish you off. This is where HCI and DCI normally helps but i feel like raw skill should count for more than it does without buffs.

I've been greatly busy with work of late, so I haven't been reading the patch notes as closely as I used to but didn't they just give a boost to specialty spellcasters where if you focus on one type of magic, you get a boost? Could they possibly do something similar for the vanilla warrior?

When i build my warrior i think not how much damage i can do but how well i can defend myself. Not only you should carry the right slayer but also on other items that can help you stay alive longer. Orange petals, Petals of Trinsic rose, ankh pendant for extra regeneration, enhanced bandages ,the stealable potions and balms from monsters, normal potions and more items like.
I always carry blade of insanity with me to keep my stamina up when it gets very low. I know that when dex gets too low i get hit much harder. Leech weapon are my warriors friend. I love my soulseeker artifact just for the leeches on it.
When i make weapons i look if they got whirlwind or armor ignore special move on it.
There are a lot of things that can help your pure warrior if you look around a bit.

Very important is know when to run away to heal!

Yes, i have a samurai too and a paladin, bard, tamer and mystic but nothing is more satisfying then to fight with my pure warrior. It challenges me a bit more to overcome fights. I could have taken it the "easy" way to use a different character for the void pool but Frarc was made for this. To fight with Valor against a overwhelming force. :)

That's my advice as well. My special skills are hiding & healing, otherwise old school (anat/tact/weap/parry) with some magery pts. My arms are specialized(since there Aren't any good resist ones), the rest are regular cheap stuff on the soulseeker level - not even all 70's. I'm good to go, thru Shame fire elementals, but stops there.
Hack & slash all the way.

Not to necro this post or anything, but I'm determined on maxing my first character as a pure warrior. When first starting UO a few months ago, I was looking through templates online and was a bit turned off by everyone recommending Bushido or Chivalry in each build I found. Good to see a pure Warrior is a viable character, and lots of helpful posts in this thread.

    My Gargoyle Thrower used to be a Pure Warrior. He had 120 Swords/GM Tact/GM Anat/GM Healing/GM Parry/GM Resist/GM Focus. With his suit on, he had 106 STR/108 DEX/50 INT, 118 Health/149 Stam/98 Mana (No CC). 45% HCI/45% DCI/70% DI (Without Wep)/50% EP, 40% LMC/8 MR (10 with innate Gargoyle MR from Mystic Insight)/2 HPR/20% Soul Charge.
I would mainly use either a Gargish Katana with 34% Stam Leech/43% Mana Leech/50% HLD/30% SSI/40% Dam Inc, or the Legacy of Despair. I would cast Enchant Weapon to apply 41% Hit Lightning to them (Gargoyle's get 40.0 Mysticism innately) I would also use the Sword of Shattered Hopes in PvP for the Splintering Weapon effect.
He worked pretty good in PvP as a Swordsman, but in PvM, the lack of Con Wep really made it rough against certain monsters. Although, i'd imagine now that you can reforge 100% Elemental onto weps, it should be a bit easier if you imbue the right Super Slayer onto the right 100% Elemental Wep. I eventually decided to try out Throwing, since it was unique to Gargoyles, and i've been thoroughly impressed with it, especially with the large amounts of damage that a Soul Glaive does. I dropped his GM Parry, and raised Tactics to 120 and picked up 80.0 Chiv as well.

Really the only thing that you need chiv for is EEO for monsters without slayer weapons, and consecrate if you don't have weapons tailored to the right resists. Bushido obviously is really handy but more than anything its for perfection, not that thats not a significant bonus. Obviously confidence, evasion, and the bonus for whirlwind are great, but I don't think you NEED them to get by.

If you aren't going solo on bosses or whatever perfection in skill and item set up really isn't that important. A solo "plain" warrior could do just fine in places like wrong and shame excluding the super monsters. And as always In a group pretty much anyone can play and contribute, especially with decent gear.

Just help him get good gear (specifically slayers with the correct elemental splits) and any set up should be good enough.

If you're wondering what the right Elements are for certain Super Slayers, it's this.
    Undead - Fire
    Repond - Fire
Reptile - Cold (White Wyrm, Cold Drake, Frost Dragon are exceptions)
    Arachnid - Fire
Demon - Cold or Energy (Cold seems more effective on the newer Demon types, while Energy seems more effective on the older Demon types)
Elemental - Varies wildly, but i go with 100% Chaos :p
