What I don't like about Siege Perilous

I decided to make a character and Siege Perilous to see what I didn't like about it... I like the Fel only ruleset, I like how there is less restrictions on the game when I am playing Siege Perilous, there is much more player freedom and a much better sandbox feel to the game, but there was a few things I did not like about it..

    1. I did not like how hard it was, you can't use recall, you have to gate or walk everywhere you go.

    2. I don't like how reds can freely enter town, guards should attack them, although I feel that reds should be able to fight off guards.

    3. You go gray when you loot someone unless that person was flagged, I disagree with this.

    4. It is very expensive, everything on this server is like double the price, even housing, as I said, it is very hard, not really fond of it.

    5. One character per server??

    6. Skill gain should be the same as production shards.

    There you have it..

They should double the skill cap on Siege or make it so that there is none

That reason alone is a huge part of why I never really got into playing my character on Siege. It's just too time consuming getting around. I want to play the game. Not spend nearly 50% of my time walking where I need to go.

As Kelmo says, many of those things are what appeal to die-hard Siege players. Recall is one of things I most loathe about regular shards.

Get on a mount and you can get to any given location within minutes. Except for maybe some ares in T2A...

Never said they were. But my experience has been (while wondering from place to place) that the only people I seem to run across outside towns are random reds who are just looking to kill someone for the fun of it. Maybe it's just bad luck, but so it's only been PK's I've ran across while traveling.

*smiles* Care must be taken when traveling. Mages can gate of course. Those of us who do not must plan accordingly. Random wandering to well traveled places can led to "exciting encounters". If you have a destination in mind, plan ahead. Travel with only what you need, and never carry anything you do not care to lose.

Friends are invaluable. If any one cares to see a bit of Siege, put a crew together. I will provide a safe house (relatively safe) steps away from the Umbra guard zone/gate.

I have a phone conference coming up soon. I will revisit this thread in a couple of hours for further questions and comments. *tips hat*

lol, you made a thread that basically complains that Siege is too hard.

Siege is, and always has been (as long as it's been around) UO's "hard mode". It exists for the benefit of players who want a more challenging experience. Simple.

When I came to Siege nearly 4 years ago, I thought I wouldn't like this aspect as well, but I quickly learned all the "shortcuts" to various places. I was surprised to find that after all those years of playing, I really didn't know my way around the lands as well as I thought I did. It's amazing how much you learn when recall isn't available.

Also, if you join a guild, you will find that your mage guildmates will be happy to open a gate for ya to/from just about any place. Guilds here are very close knit and you learn to rely on each other for lots of things. There is a lot to be said for the guild experience on Siege. :)

I don't think you are ready for Siege, you want it to easy and to safe.

    1. I did not like how hard it was, you can't use recall, you have to gate or walk everywhere you go.

It may feels hard but recall is not the solution and a good horse will help you alot.
I do think we should have a few public moongates more on desert places.

    2. I don't like how reds can freely enter town, guards should attack them, although I feel that reds should be able to fight off guards.

That's not really a problem but maybe they should not be able to be rezzed right after getting guard killed, maybe 30 sec delay.

    3. You go gray when you loot someone unless that person was flagged, I disagree with this.

Don't loot someone you did not kill, I think you should go grey to all reds from looding a red player you did not kill *evilgrin*

    4. It is very expensive, everything on this server is like double the price, even housing, as I said, it is very hard, not really fond of it.

It is 3x the prices on normal shards unless you can find a cheap faction town.
Customizing houses is same price as on normal shards.
Not bad at all, the Siege economy is better than on other shards.
Only one thing need a changes, Vendor fee is killing the crafters.

    5. One character per server??
Here I agree, we need two char slots on an account

    6. Skill gain should be the same as production shards.

    NO, never, we love RoT

    You can't have it

They should double the skill cap on Siege or make it so that there is none

Think that's the worse you come up with, that would total destroy the balance on Siege.

The main problem is, it should not be a game rule that should prevent people from recalling. It simply should be more interesting, more challenging and more rewarding if you walk. Meaning, there should be more things to discover in the landscape, and these should be dynamic things (or people will just mark runes again and recall there).

    1. I like the fact that there is no recall. Going anywhere is an adventure. I like that I should use my gate spell cautiously.

    2. Well, there are reds and then there are reds. Some reds enjoy pking, and some reds are red because they enjoy dealing player justice. No red has dry looted me on SP.

    3. I can only reiterate 2 above - No RED has dry looted me on SP.

    4. No getting around it, SP is expensive. I gather this is to encourage working together. Not everyone particularly wants to be in a guild and that's cool, just expect that (initially at least) times will be lean.

    5. Two chars per server would be nice, wouldn't it?

    6. I go both ways on skillgain on SP. On one hand, I want the SP experience to be challenging. On the other, however, there is a subtle difference between challenging and discouraging.

because on production shards PK's hang out pretty much exclusively at hotspots and champ spawns. People have gotten used to wandering around Fel relatively safely.

Skill gain in SP is great, wish all shards had ROT.

I have been dry looted by reds on SP, and on newbie chars. It is hard to recover from that.

SP is probably one of the best shards in UO, or it used to be the 3 months or so I played there.

I remember training a fencer and always carrying lots of ale, wine, and liquor to bribe the orc guilds to leave me alone. When I was playing there, there were lots of in character guilds Well, maybe two or three, and that was a blast.

My advice, if you want to play on SP: don't try and change it, change yourself to fit SP.

The "real SP" community has a place for you, if you are willing to take your place in it.

IMHO, no one with less that 2 years community time on SP should have a say about any changes SP should, or shouldn't have.

Don't look like a diff to me. PK's on Siege do also hang out on hotspots and champ Spawns.
The hotspots may be a little different on Siege as it include Luna and places in Ilshenar, Tokuno islands and Malas.

If you move away from hotspots, you can wandering around relatively safely or you may run into a RP red who want to share some fun with you.

Sure Siege have a few grief reds who think they are "real PK's" but they are just immature kids who think they are cool, when they kill, rez kill and dry loot.

Now they are only few and most red are not out to grief, even when they may kill you and loot what they can use just like you will kill a monster and loot what you can use.

I can't remember when my crafters last was killed, think it's years ago. Freja do offen get invited to a fight and do sometimes die but it's all fun and one of the reasons I love UO

Siege is not for all, just like Felucca is not for all.

The real diff between Siege and other shards is, you have nowhere to hide if you want to be a griefer, you can't go to a fel zone and PK when you are in the mood and them be safe in tram zone when you want to kill monsters or do some mining or lumbering.

On Siege, you have no safe spot other than in your house.

I enjoy the challenges of Siege. It encourages me to use my brain a bit and get creative. At first I ran everywhere, and a couple of times when I wanted to go somewhere I thought I'd get bushwhacked on the way, I went by boat.

Lately I manage to gate, with the help of a siege-blessed tome of lost knowledge, pair of +15 jewels and some scrolls. I fizzle a bit, but I get there eventually.

One of the most challenging things I did, I think, was the humility cloak quest - without gates.

Is Siege too tough? What would I know? A middle aged English grandmother.

Seige is a very exciting shard for most of the reasons you don't like. I played Chesapeake for many years off and on and always quit because I just got bored. I came to Seige a little over 2 years ago, alone, just to see what it was like. I have never gone back to Chessy again. Two characters per account wouild be nice, I agree, but you take the characters you play very seriously because of having only one per account. Gating is not a big deal, just do it cautiously. Seige is a community, a real community. Your crafters are needed because nothing is insured. Many people don't pk and just enjoy crafting or PvMing; but there is always the excitment of running for your life if necessary. Your reputation matters here and how you play is what it will be based on. You develop relationships here that become great friends, and you learn soon who your enemies are and who can't be trusted. All in all, its a great shard to play on. Its a tight, passionate, community of many personalities. Give it a chance. Its never boring.

I have to agree with those players who have posted from Siege. I relocated to Siege several months ago after playing for about 2 years on a Trammel shard. Playing Trammel, I found myself complacent. I knew my bank balance was high, so I had no worries. I could go challenge the Dark Father every day for months, and never lose a single piece of equipment. But when I arrived on Siege, things were far different. As a new character, I actually used my Siege bless on my dagger, of all things. That is because everything on Siege actually has some value. Not only does one find oneself in constant danger from the possibility of PKs, but one must consider their actions when dealing with monsters, as well. Ogre Lords and such will not hesitate to loot your most precious piece of equipment on Siege, so every action requires some forethought.

I hated the "no recall" rule when I arrived on Siege. It meant I had to either travel by foot, or spend precious skill points on Magery, a skill I hadn't planned on working. I did the magery thing for a while, and used my gates carefully. But I have since stoned magery in favor of other things, and do not mind the time I spend "wandering". As Kelmo stated, you meet some wonderful people and find some great adventures when you just "wander". Yes, I've died while wandering, but that is part of the magic of Siege. The constant state of alert a player must maintain is part of the appeal to me, and what will make me stay on Siege.

  33. WHOA! Quite a contradiction there, don't you think? You've played Siege for some 3 months, but giving advice about other players not giving advice on Siege unless they've played for 2 years? Hmm...

These are all the things that make Siege great. The only thing here that I remotely agree with is item #1. What you are essentially looking for is a fel only shard which is identical to the production shards basically. No thanks.

If you like fel so much find a dead prodo server and play there.

Iv been back in UO for about 5 months now, started back on europa and found it boring as hell having everything you could ever need so i hopped on a newb char and started out from scratch on atl, lvl'd a tailor and smith made a ton of gold to make a good hunting char and im back to square 1! Now 2 months later im bored again..

After reading this thread when i get home im gona make a char on siege cos by the sounds of it its a hell of a lot more fun than this "make gold/lvl/hunt/get bored/make gold/quit again till a new event happens/do event /get bored/farm resources/get bored again/quit till next event...

Although i am loving the EM events, most fun iv had in years.

Any idea were to start with a crafter on siege? like safe banks, safe places to mine/chop wood/get wool or cotton? OH pm me this else that (Rico..la) will be there waiting to rob me :p

Sorry OP you need to rethink what you are trying to say.

double skill amount? Yeah so you can have magery taming eval lore vet resist swords tactics anatomy bushido parry.

    Thats not overpowered.

Be able to Evade, sick pets, use spells, and hit with a weapon at full damage

    Not a contradiction at all.

Maybe this translation will help you: I know how to grill a steak, but until you have a degree in the culinary arts, leave the cooking to the chefs.

Or this one might be more to your understanding: I've poured me enough beers to know; leave the brewers alone until you're brewed enough to stand next to them.

You see, coming into SP, and telling them how "their shard should be", is like being a patient and telling the doctors how they should run their hospital - it is pretty much the exclusive domain of the mentally ill.

*edit: my opinion is not "how to play on SP" - I am opposed to changes on SP, unless and until I see "real" SP players petitioning for them.

My crafter is parked at Delucia. you cant create there, but you can run. If you get dry looted on the way, PM me, I'll set you up with a pair of tweezers and pocket knife. Wouldn't want to deny you the challenge you are looking for. :)

Oh and, by the way, you get one char there, and NPCs won't buy things from your crafter.

    I vote no.

The best thing about Siege? I don't have to hear this:

    "Don't steal from _______ he's my alt."
"I don't steal from that guild, I have my main in it."
"I don't steal from that guild, my buddy is in that guild."
"Can you give that back to him? He's my bro."

    No alternate characters!

No chance to make a new character on your 7th character slot, pull your shinanigans, get a good laugh, delete character, rinse, repeat.

No chance to be anonymous. No chance to have alternate lives.

(RoT also helps this. You wouldn't ever delete your guy and start over, just to pull a prank. Well... most people wouldn't.)

    QFT!!! :D

I couldn't have said it better myself! :scholar:

No less than you do, How many hours do you play Siege outside of your pub per week?

Is it more than my 40 hours I play on a populated server?

Didnt think so, so please Kelmo go back to the Siege Perilous forums where your word cant be questioned.

Just because you dont see me in game doesnt mean that I do not play. It would be hard for one to see someone when he himself isnt an active member of the community. Yes that means logging in everyday and actually playing, Not sitting in your tavern by yourself decorating. I mean actually interacting with other LIVE players.

If your interested on playing a server with no people than Siege is the place for you, It has slowly been dieing the last 6 months ( well 3-4 years ). But the last 6 months have been really bad, it seems like another vet is quitting every other day. And when you only have a total population of 100-150 players (50-100 Active) than its not very good to have players quitting like that every other week.

If your interested in a hard game, there is a wonderful game being released on the 25th of febuary called www.darkfall.com, It will definetally be opened/released on the 25th of this month.

Goodluck with whatever path you choose, was just trying to give you some more options. Take a look around on the server itself before you get suckered into playing there by someone who is just trying to get more people to come there because they themselves are bored and cant find anyone to play with.

    Death to Siege!!!

    All hail Trammel!

You play 40 hours? Really? In a week? 40? Do you get overtime if you go over 40? Wow!

Oh by the way. I am the man here on Uhall too. I have less Patience with you here.

Ah, but you've stated EA/Mythic will *never* see another dime from you.

    Backpedal much?

    ...

There's a sort of irony in a thread from a "devoted" Darkfall proponent complaining that Siege is "too hard".

That on top of previous threads makes me wonder how Trammie of a game Darkfall is going to be despite its marketing campaign of being "[email protected]"...

Most do have more than one account to it would not make much diff other than Siege also will be for the one who can't affort more than one account.

I have 6 accounts, yes I'm crazy, but they are all in same guild.
What stop someone from having 2 chars now other than their RL economy.

You would be right if someone wanted to spend the money for a full set of 10+ soul stones just to run that gag.

Stone off all skills --> delete character --> make new character --> stone new skills --> scam someone --> repeat.

With 2 characters on one account, you only need one set of stones for your main guy and your prank guy.

I made a character on Siege. Took everything off him. Walked around and looked at vendors...cause I was gonna make a crafter. You see...I have never worked a single crafting skill....ever. Almost ten years in this game and never sewn a shirt? Anyway....I walked around....never saw a soul. 6:30....on a Sunday. Not a soul. I went to Luna. Saw a dude at the bank. Talked to him for a sec and told him my plan. Nice guy. He said a fletcher would do nicely. I agreed with him. I logged. Came back a few days later to get started. This one dude killed me seven times. I explained I was just getting started. What my plan was and that I was carrying nothing. Seven times. Followed me. Killed me. Told me to go back to wherever I came from. So...I've met two people on Siege. One a nice guy....one a jerk.

A few weeks later. I decided to try it again. Got me an axe and ventured out into the wilderness. Worked hiding and lumberjacking....was doing pretty good. A chick pops up and asks me who I am...and I guess I answered incorrectly. I explained I was just getting started that I heard crafters were needed here and I had never made one before. Dead....dry looted....took my axe? Why? Spite? At this point...I'm ready to say screw it. When I meet a guy who says he'll help me out. Take me to a place where no one will find me....let me cut timber...and check on me every so often. I said GREAT! Thank you! I worked around there for an hour or so....had some actual wood in my pouch. When my new buddy comes back. He asks how I've done...I tell him....he kills me and takes my wood. So...the feel good stories and "community" you all hear about are pretty much crap. I can do without Grief Perilous.
