What would, YOU, be willing to give up to stop cheating?

Hail: I hope people who know a lot more about how things work on the internet than i do reply.

If, stopping scripting, dupes, speedhacks, ect, and anything that uses another program to work was stopped, what would you give up to see it put in place?

At it's simpelest form. If UO was Ran in full screen, and prevented, ALL, other programs from running, would you accept this, if it was the only way? This would mean, No Screensaver on, No anti virus on, No UO Assist, No icq, No webcam or messanger, No anything.......

It would also mean, No speedhack, No UO hack, No Dupes, No Nothing. If it could nopt be done in the game it self, THEN IT COULD NOT BE DONE AT ALL.
Would it be worth it to you to go to this extreme? Because, as an average player, would there be any other way to accomplish of the goal of no cheating, involving outside mechanics or programs?

    Your thoughts. EA's Thoughts? Thanks.

Not sure how realistic it is but umm Nope. I do not even want to think about playing UO without UOA and Vent.

Uhhh, no. I refuse to drop my AVs or my Firewalls for any game or program. Making a game that requires such would be insane. Who would want to play a game that while playing they could get infected by a virus and/or hacked by a hacker? Such a game would become a huge bullseye for scrupulous people seeking to exploit the people that play it because they would know that the players are unprotected.

    Silly, this is just silly.

  5. Nothing.

Not gonna give up my freedom for cheaters.

Personally I don't care who cheats.

I have played with them since day one; so why change it now.

For once, I'm actually in agreement with Orvago on something.

  8. [IMG]Needs quite a bit of work on the "theory" side for starters ...
    before I would "commit".

Your premise is based on a "hack proof" system ...

    Pristine in its isolation ...
Pfffft! first thing needs to go ... the internet connection.
Then the "software" ... can't allow any access to that .. minimal four way compartmentalization of the sourcers ... double blind assembly and compilation,
operation IN an encrypted floating state ...maybe it would be reverse engineer proof ... not likely though [IMG] ...see following for hardware.

The hardware and the input/output channel, would also need be sealed, not as easy as one might think ... memory would need be unaccessible, as would the medium that carries the actual game ...
    *shrugs*

Even IF, those three were met ...
    bonk!
wouldn't be able to export it ... would need maintain "proof of custody" ... absolute custody ... being "played" OR "locked up"

say it WAS possible to create it ...
STILL gonna have to strictly monitor those that play it ...

See any "reputable" gaming casino ... for the extant necessary there.

    Nope
too soon to dream of having to bother with a "commit"

I'd be willing to give up $25 per account per month if they actually hired more devs to:
    a) Answer the 'there's an unattended guy here!' pages and generally improve customer service.
    b) Fix the UO code. The programs were made to abuse mistakes in the UO code. So why go after the programs, when it's better to fix the code? If the programs don't work, no one will use them.
    c) They would have people checking the game for unattended macros and other cheaters.

Currently UO just seems horribly understaffed.

As for not running anti virus etc. That's just highly unrealistic.

Nothing. Stopping cheating is not high on my list. Yes, cheating is bad. So don't play with cheaters. That, as fas as I'm concerned, is the end of the argument for me. I've never witnessed any of the alleged impact cheating has on UO, which, though I'm sure there is, I'm also not worried about it since it seems to be nearly none.

Now, I'd give my stone keep and 100 mil checks to get the 3D client back...

  11. Some cheats and exploits are done strictly in game. Stopping other programs would not help.

For example, it used to be possible to transfer a char off a shard, then crash the shard, then have your character's duplicate still on the starting shard after the recovery from back-up. That dupe has been stopped, but it is a general class of exploits that pops up over and over.

    ------

Excuse the naive solution, but if you want to stop "all programs that interfere with the UO data stream" then why not simply encrypt the data stream? Encryption can be made very strong and changed often to keep it secure.

The sense behind this cannot really work. You can't make a machine do this. On modern machines, at any given time, there are a number of executables running, and starting up and stopping. It's just not doable.

    Will stop there.

Even if people were to accept this, it wouldn't work. You can run a 'full screen' program in windowed mode, making it think it's full screen. And there are various tags and such to make it where programs can't see other programs running.

Thanks, for the reply's. As i said, i just used this as an example, since one poster said if they spen $$, they could stop it. I do not know how.

I do know this. Back when UO Extreme was out, UO would put in a patch. This would fix bugs, or what not in the game. But it also would stop that program from running. Between 2 hours, to 2 days, it would be right back up and running again. The only reason it stopped, it because the guy who made it, got tired of UO, and quit. That was posted here on stratics many years ago.

Several weeks ago a poster here said, "I give up, if you can't beat'em, join them, I am downloading the speed hack as we speak". The responces on this topic seem to support that idea.
    1. Don't care, stop complaining about it, and move on.
    2. Either download it, or quit UO. There will always be cheaters.

I guess it is just a matter of, "What has the cheater gained, and has it hurt the game"? If it is a lot, and Yes, they get banned, or house set on fire. If it is, only a little, and No overall impact, it is not cost effective to do anything about it.

So, We all should do 1 or 2, and drive on. Weeeeeee. I chose 1.

  16. If people have a wireless connection, they would have to disable their wireless connection program to run UO, which would mean no internet, which would then mean no UO.

I like the idea of preventing certain programs from running with UO on, but not all. That's just not viable.

Not really willing to give up anything sorry. Certainly not my firewall or AV system. I use my messengers for more than just UO so that too. Since those are the only systems I use while in UO I suppose that means I wouldn't be willing to give up anything.

  18. The problem with cheating is the game mechanics, not the players. I wouldn't play this game if it messed with my computer. I want the game fixed. Everything people cheat on are stupid parts of the game mechanics that I'll like to see designed differently.

PvP? That's easy, just give everyone what the cheaters use.

Scripting? How about some overland spawn in Trammel? What's preventing this? Why is overland Trammel Britannia, the CORE of the land, such a wussy safe zone? Oh noes, some new player might die. Poor guy.

Improve the MONSTER AI!!!! Right now they aren't monsters, they are treasure boxes. Isn't our spawning system outdated? How about mobile armies like that of the invasion of Britain?

Skill Gain. This is my favorite part of the game, although a lot of people hate. I'd like to see it become even more difficult and immersive besides mindless repetition. Then again, I feel a good PVM character should be able to compete in PvP. Crazy.

    You forgot 3.
    3. Care. Want EA to act and devote resources to fighting exploits. Will not quit UO. There will always be cheaters.

I remember when people got banned frequently for exploiting. Sure, more people exploited and got away with it, but at least there was an active response to the exploiting. Nowadays it feels like EA cares less and less about exploiters.
Today I bet I could page a GM on two different accounts at the same time. One account pages about in-game harassment, the other pages about a scripter, or a speedhacker (I'd even page on my second account, just so i know if a gm tries to private speak to it). $10 says the harassment page will be answered within a half hour everytime and the exploit page will go unanswered for at least an hour most of the time. I base this on experiences paging GMs. They tend to act more often on certain pages, but not on others.
