What's the point with the Fishing Quests?

I mean now really, you get a Quest from a Fishing Monger and have to Fish then for Hours to get those 10 wanted Fish, for only 1 Quest. After that you have to move with your Snailship from A to B, which needs 30 minutes or more. So where of the Hell is the fun by this all? Have i missed it maybe? I mean if i want to waste my time, then i can just stick a Finger in my Nose and watch peoples running by, by Felu Yew Gate.

And what is with the Fishing Scrolls? It can't be that you have to make those stupid Quests 1000000x times just to get maybe an +5 Fishing Scroll. Right now the frustration limit is reached with this stupid Booster Pack. If you want to keep Players then change some things pretty fast or the rest will leave UO too.

Oh and before i forget it, why of the Hell T-Map Mobs had to be changed? The Level 6 T-Map Spawn was ok, now we got for Level 6 Maps, Level 7 crap Spawn. Right now i feel like Kiss my Ass UO and Hi WoW i am back!

I put in almost an hour yesterday evening on a fishing quest and I got a book about lobsters as a reward.

I just can't wait to spend more of my limited free time on this!

Maybe a lot more people would do the quests if they gave out saltpeter as a reward, especially on the shards that still have only one alchemist selling it at the market. :)

I may well be wrong, but I seem to understand that by doing fish Quests one also accumulates "Quests' Points" which open up new Quests for better rewards.

So, spending time on Quests "might" be an investment if it gets points built up that open up more rewarding new Quests......

  5. Mehelenya

    Mehelenya Guest

That could be but how many Points we get per Quest? 1? And how many we need to get better Rewards? 100? I mean we fish for Weeks maybe for months before we get a 120 Fishing Scroll. Will you be after all that "wasted" time, in the mood to gain Fishing till 120? Me not.

What you call "wasted time" some of us call enjoyment. I love fishing RL so to me this is enjoyable. I have been known RL not to use any bait while fishing because I didn't want to ruin my nap.

I call a waste of Time, Quests that gives Random Rewards and which needs Hours to get only one completed. I mean Random means, you could maybe never ever see a Fishing Scroll. We all know Random in UO .... Perhaps you like to Fish 24/7 but for me that is no fun. I like to Fish for 1 Hour and then i want to do other things. If i want to work, then i do it real but not in a Game. And right now it is extreme Work for a Random Reward or for Ammunition for the new Canons. The best thing is, i have not even, ever seen Salpeter on Europa cause there are 2 Players camping all NPC's 24/7. Even if we would have there 50 NPC's, those 2 Players would still camp there and buy all Salpeter.

If you play in a guild you could help eachother?

In my guild/alliance we have a house with containers where everyone stores fish and takes those needed for a quest... so the setup is something like this:
    - Get quest
    - Sail to desired port, fish along the way
    - Recall to fishhouse and store everything you caught
    - Take the 10 fish you need to complete quest.
    - Finish quest and repeat

This way the stock will build faster than its emptied since you fish more than 10 fish total on your trip.... the more people participating the better :)

Oh my god.. I just realized they made it so that working together as a group is better than soloing.... more of this please!:mf_prop:

    hehe

  11. It does get easier the more you do it....

Keep EVERY fish you get. They do stack, put them in your bank because of the weight.

Once you find out what fish you need sail to the destination right away. You can go and buy a map of the world and mark the course. Make sure to use many pins to sail around land. Then drop it on the tillerman and say "start". Drop the map inside your hold and go do whatever you want. Fish for the rest of the fish you need, go craft something, etc. Return later and check on your ship. If it hits land, another ship, a dolphin, water ele, etc it will stop. If you take the map with you and don't leave it on the ship he will forget his course.

After you fish enough you get a lot of fish in your bank and it gets a little easier.

I do agree.... so far the rewards haven't been that great. I really want a PS, no luck yet.

    The solution is simple ...
If you dont like fishing, you dont need the ps. If you like fishing, you shouldnt care too much. After 'some' time, you will get what you want.

Welcome to the sea. Should have researched the booster a little more before you bought it, rofl.

Valid complaint. Although, if they made it harder, I'm all for that.

Again, it's fishing. It's not supposed to be completed in 15 seconds. If you want to do something fast do a Navrey or something.

lol ... a tragedy of the commons setup is cool, i mean, having everyone taking out the teleost fish, screwing up the economy so dolphins go belly up ... good deal, but there are two main problems I see with the fishing quest at current. numero uno, the rewards apply to a skill that is currently unattainable (120 fishing), and there are no listed benefits of having fishing in between 100 and 120. mythic scrolls? okay. but this is more like "not in the game, and they aren't telling us until they implement what we paid $15, as advertised." secundo, there is no in-game incentive to party with other fishers. every fisher in the party of the quester should receive a small bonus, or item. how amazing would it be if the game could count, out of the fish, how many each person put in, then reward each in some sort of way? say "top damager" gets main prize, then the rest get a percentage of pts.

having to put fish in your bank is ridiculous for the user to have to do :/. they need to make bags that hold more than 400 stones already. hell, we've had chars that can hold more than 400 stones for years, now our boats can hold 16,000. that means we'd need to buy 40 bags to sort **** out, and that's -40 items :O.

    good advice though

Well, to make a comparison, there is players who have played Ultima Online for years and yet, even if they wanted it dearly, they were unable for a long time to lay their hands on a 120 Magery or Evaluate Intelligence Powerscroll....

What I am trying to say, is that it can well be that some items may be harder to get than others.

There does is another option though......... buy the fishing Powerscroll from those who enjoy the fishing in game.

Spend time doing else that is more fun and spend the gold obtained in that time to buy the fishing powerscroll from others.

The bolded part is the part I did not understand.

If the purpose of the sailing is to fish to complete Quests, how can I just drop the Map and go crafting somewhere else ?

I mean, in order to fish there need to be on the moving ship a fisherman dropping the line in the sea, catching fishes and blah blah.

And I need to click the line, click the water, remove fishes from backpack and all that.

How can dropping a World Map on the tillerman and saying "start" just start the whole fishing even when I move to my home, for example, to do some crafting ?

Can you please explain it better ?
    Thanks.

Gee something in the game that will take time and not see the endgame in 3 days. However will I ***** for months about wanting new content if UO doesn't get an easy button right now. You think the moonstone jewelry goes for a load of gold. Wait till the first 120 PS and then the first Black Marlin get shouted for sale on chat. Yes the world would be much better if every driveway had a Rolls and F-Maxx in it. Least this isn't something timed and camped by a few like the level 12 arty. May have to put in the effort for reward instead of the risk for reward. And on the bright side it can be soloed with just one skill. Fishing gets some love.

Any estimates how much they will start selling for ?

I heard a rumor of a 120 fishing powerscroll going for 50 millions but I am not sure whether it was just a rumor........

Well if they are just as rare as the moonstone jewels then that be about right. Then also ,price reflective, will be the rare deco fish that a 120 should catch rarely for profit. Problem is none scrolled players catching the rare fish. Maybe look at what pies are made and there usefulness. It is all about game balance and UOs true kryptonite.

Those are some really lazy and unmotivitaded players. They wouldn't last in the earlie days. Imagine actually have to train for over a year to just get gm swordsmanship the horror.

  22. Whats the point of the fishing quests?

Ah you pay money to play a game and thats part of the game.

Were you expecting to do one quest and get a house in the Abyss for a reward or 1 billion gold or maybe a sword of destruction?

Come on. Think about what you post.

Here are 5 tips for you.

Fish for a few hours and collect the fish and store them. Cancel the quest till you get a fish that matches your stored catch. ARGH.

Buy your fish from the bizzillion vendors that now have them nicely stacked for you.

Don't do the quests now. Go make some gold and in about a week when the quest rewards are available go buy them. Do Task A that you like to get something from the Quest (which you dont see a point too)

    Don't do the quests.

And the big point. As you do more quests you move a tier. I have gotten baits. What are baits good for? Sell it, use it. Catch rare fish. Make trophies out of them. Cut the rare fish. Sell the steaks. They are odd colors. Make pies with the fish. Use the pies for Stat bumps. Sell the pies.

  23. Im with you Kaiser.

"What I actually have to make decisions on what not to keep because I cant store EVERYTHING I touch in my bank or house."

"I don't want to play the game. I just want stuff."

"Unfair he got it and I didn't. Increase the drop rate. NO NO. I got it and I don't want him to have it. Decrease the drop rate."

    Have to laugh.

I have to agree on both sides... the fishing quest are difficult and time consuming... but I have learned a lot about the world and some nice features when using the boat tillerman and a map with plotted points.

I get my quest from the fish monger.. set out my course on the map give it to the tillerman and fish until I reach my destination.. saving any and all fish I catch. Somtimes when I am short on time I will check my quest box and if I dont have the fish to fill it I will cancel the quest and get another quest until i find one I have the fish to fill it with. Then off I go sailing to the point required, continuing to fish and catching more fish to add to my reserve.

I have been a little disappointed with the rewards.. My very first reward was a Lava Lobster trap.. thought that was pretty nice, then the next 8 or so were all baits.. I have used many baits at 100 skill and yet to get a rare fish with the baits (though I have caught rare fish just out fishing without the baits) so the baits seem kind of useless - maybe better used when and if the powerscrolls do exist and you have a higher catch rate when the baits are used. So for now the baits are just going into storage. Next item I received was a Lava Fishing pole.. another nice item.. now I am up to some quests asking for 20 fish or multiple kinds of fish (10 of X and 10 of Y) so I am thinking nice I am going to get some better stuff... nope more baits... now its asking for some dungeon fish... off to fish the dungeons.. next two rewards are Fishing Books.. that have no use that I can find (thought well maybe they will give a boost or something) nada.. last two items I received last night were more baits :-( More fishing this weekend I guess.. At least when I finally get bored of the fishing quests maybe they will have the saltpeter issue fixed and I can move onto that part of the upgrade..

Be nice if people would continue to post what they are getting and about how many quests they have completed... and are the rewards better in fel compared to tram? So far im between 15 - 20 completed quests.. all completed in tram.

  25. I always hand sail to points. Granted I fish as I go to store up fish for the quests. Not really up on sailing.

Are you saying you use a world map or something and plot points.

Then I heard you can drop map on tillerman. How does that all work?

Here you go... this was posted in the fishing forums by "Aerodice"... Thanks, it has been very helpful to me...

-Open the map and locate the area you wish to sail to. If it's a town such as Moonglow, then click the top of the map to start plotting. The strategy here is to put pins to sail around large obstacles such as islands. When you place more than one pin, a straight line connects to the next. Use this to plot your course.

-Hand the tillerman your map (Make sure you aren't piloting your boat with the mouse). Here's the commands you can use:

START: Starts the ship along your course. Tillerman sails to point/pin 1 on your map. If everything goes well and you don't crash into obstacles, the tillerman will go to each pin on your map (nav points).

SINGLE #: Say this to go to a certain point on your map (You can open your map and check any time). For example, if you pass a pin on your map and wish to skip to the next, say SINGLE # (Where number is the pin you wish to sail to). SINGLE 2 for example, would sail to pin 2 on your map

CONTINUE: If your tillerman stops at a pin on your map, then say this and he'll continue on with the sailing.

STOP: Tells your tillerman to stop sailing. You can use START or CONTINUE to get the tillerman to sail your course again.

NAV: Say this at any time when the tillerman is sailing. He'll tell you the pin/point on the map he is currently sailing to.

Try this out, it's much better than sailing by hand. You can just sit back and enjoy the sea.

They've added content and forgotten that maybe, just maybe, people expect to get some benefit from doing things.

Does the new boss drop anything, or are we just supposed to kill it for nothing for fun? lol

  29. Yeah the benefit is playing a game. 1 quest, done 1x, is 1 fraction of the game.

In other words no, there's no reward or benefit to doing this stuff, you just don't have a decent rebuttal and want to posture about how you're above needing gold in UO. Thanks.

  32. No. The rebuttal is you are playing a game for leisure.

I do believe the next expansion will cost $15
and for that price you get all the arties that are uber and worthy.

and the only way you can get them is by buying the expansion. No work involved.

The fishing quest is tiered and it give rewards. If you dont like the quest. Don't play it. Your idea of a reward is found somewhere else in the game.
    Play that part.

If you need gold in UO. FISH and stock the vendors. I am buying them for 10k each. Youll make a mint.

My current rewards... a book, 3 baits, and having fun watching my kid pilot the ship that he thinks is cool.

See you and I see reward differently in the sea. Thats okay.

Fishing is not for everyone. At the end of the road you are catching fish, not killing champions or getting rare equipment. It is like Mining or Lumberjacking, it is a resource gathering skill.

I quite enjoy the fishing quests...

My secret is that I train fishing for a few hours, then run around the cities getting rid of the fish I've filled my hold with.
If the quest asks for fish I don't have, I'll either pop to the little cooperation thing we have going on and pick up the fish I need, or I ditch the quest and pick up a new one.

Getting the quest, then trying to catch the fish for it strikes me as the most unrewarding and frustrating way to do it I can think of. When you're looking for particular fish, it's going to suck to get the ones you don't need (which will be the vast majority of the time).

Right, anyone who expects any of this High Seas garbage to be anything other than a money-and-timesink is a noob who wants all arties for free and bla bla bla. But not RavenWinterHawk, they're above all that and see the true value of the game. What a hero.

I wonder why of the hell so many Peoples here talks about Gold, have i asked for Arties / Gold / Rares in my Posting? If you Peoples don't understand my main Posting, then feel free to ask me. It is pretty simple, i asked where the point is in Fishing for HOURS for only 1 in words "ONE" Quest? And that Quest gives even a Random Reward, so many Fisherman will maybe never see a Powerscroll.
What is so funny in doing Fishing over Weeks for maybe nothing except some 0815 Random Rewards? We talk here about Fishing, you know that is a completly different Skill as all other Skills. As a T-Hunter i have always new Locations, i get Loot, Monster Spawn ... but Fishing what does give it? Fish, Fish and more Fish. Like i wrote you could even stay at Yew Gate and stick a Finger in your Nose ... Fishing is not a Skill that keeps Peoples excited over Weeks. And none will ever Buy all those Fishes you fished up. Cause wait a few days till Peoples can Script again, then the Market will be full with 100er Stack Fishes for 5k Gold per Stack.

  37. Name calling now... nice.

    Dork

  38. You dont have to fish for hours for 1 quest?
Im on number 4 in 1 and 1/2.

Got a lava lobster traps, baits and on way to vesper

Sure you need to build up stock but once you do. Cancel quests till you get a match for your fish.

THen fish as you boat autopilots to port.
You only have to go 2/3 the way too to the port.

More thought should have been put in to these quests. First of all, I think it would have been nice to have a developing scale of quest size and reward quality. That alone would have made the whole system seem a lot more...worth doing.

What they should have done was make "The order of the Dragonfish" a more present faction, and tie them into the loyalty system. When you complete a quest you gain loyalty to the Order. As your loyalty goes up, the difficulty of the quests ramps up as well... but so do the quality of the rewards. Until once you reach the top level of loyalty you could be a professional sea merchant as an actual in game trade, like other people hunt treasure or monsters. THAT would have been an engaging system. You would work, progress, and be rewarded with a new source of income.

And if you really wanted to get creative, you could form an opposing faction, that of pirates and black marketeers, where you gain loyalty by sinking merchant vessels, or pirating booty etc...

There was a lot more potential fun to be had here, and I know boosters aren't the same as regular expansions, but I think an expanded quest line and an opposing faction wouldn't really be THAT much more work. All the foundations all already exist, it would just need to be fleshed out how many points you get for what actions and what level new quests would show up, and the proper rewards etc...

Personally I don't fish for fishes. In the past they'd finish in fish steaks. Now they're cumulating in the ship's storage. I like to fish for white pearls, scales and sea serpents (fish nets and MiBs), often when I'm going to a treasure hunt.
Now it's a mess with all the fishes. MiBs are still not updated. The new quests are not fun to do. Well, it was fun for the first. But then shuffling through the randomly requested fishes to have a random reward that will give you a chance of catching a random fish*... yeah awesome. Or better, to get a PS. Oh yeah, my template wasn't cramped enough! Ok so the new fishes that could count as an achievement aren't available for me if I don't sacrify access to another part of the game.

I'm disappointed by the quests. They would actually bring more to the game if the baits they give would actually do something nice. Like catching some funny stuff in a funny place.
I think there's too many fishes (with similar graphics), so it's just a big mess. The good point is that you can cut fishes right on the deck. 10 stones a fish is counter-productive.

*: While fishing around I caught a 64 stones rare barracuda. By using a few baits, I caught a 23 stone rare barracuda. So incentive. What do I do with them? Ah yeah, fish steaks.

I love the expansion. I am glad to see fishing finally get more love. I dusted my GM fisher off for this. Here's what I have been doing:

    1. Taking more than 1 fishing quest at a time- you can do it. This way you knock out more in same time. Also, remember the quest is giving you points with the city you accepted it at ( I think that's how it works, that it isn't shared between them all) so you are potentially building "reputation" with each individual city. If anyone can confirm or deny this for me I will love you for 24 hours, I swear.

    2. Fishing as I sail. I do the map to tillerman method.

Things I still wish they'd improve - the loot from SOS/MiB, making the messes stackable. Totally agree with that.

    I absolutely love this expansion.

bounty hunting another waste of time

10k for 30-40 min sailing around and catching/fighting a pirate.

ok you get ship parts ... fine, but what is when you got a ton orc ships already? then you still go out for lousy 10k?

a tmap gives 30k and takes a few minutes.

10k? and then you must schare it with a crew of 4-5 people? wasting a lot more money for esources etc.

when i all read this above i am asking myself whats going on in the heads of the dev? (prolly nothing ... vacuum)

imho the package on the long view is a real desaster ... yes its nice for a few days to see new things etc. but then all is a waste of time.

btw. in a few more days the sea around sea market is so crowded from teleported out ships it will be a challenge to reach it

ah yes and after days saltpeter is still another challange but i have written enough about so i dont do it again, dev dont listen anyway

sorry dev you never failed so much like this time ... your luck that there is no "get money back" option!

There's more than just orc ships on the capturing pirates reward. Done two this evening, and not got a single orc ship piece :)

all i can say is, if a real fisherman had to catch a load of fish and trek across the globe, just to be paid with a jar of stinkbait.....thered be some dead fishmongers. Perhaps throw some gold into it at least. perhaps Rare Boat paints?

I believe the points build up from the source city. I am not sure, as it hasn't been confirmed if they are shared or separate. I just grab them whenever I can anyway. But I do 3+ quests at a time, fishing while I go. I multi-task a bit too much maybe.
