While I know that there is no hope of getting a EA team member to speak up and place his/her company on the line I would love to know if there is ever a hope of this being fixed? Yes I died and am annoyed but its beyond absured when I mounted player who's pinging just fine cannot keep up with a dismounted player. There is no shard this does not happen(seige might be different) and there is no way the dev team can keep thier collective heads in the sand. There is no way a player can PVP in this enviroment without resorting to like tactics to even the field. Come on.

LOL ya that's the best reply from EA staff that I have seen yet.

It's sad in that this game was once a lawless land but one never ran into these "features" now the game has been carebear'd and this is whats left. No staff to patrol and no team to comment. Sigh.

The problem is we continue to pay EA despite its incompetence, neglect, and or indifference. Last i saw anything posted on it was early December and we all know that with EA a couple months turns into years and years turns into never.

That is a good point we do pay for a game that has to many hackers (client modders, speed hackers, misc others) to count ON EACH SERVER!

Said it before - you can play free games, Steam games for example where cheaters get banned or kicked instantly.

I have programmed some nice looking games with TV and Unreal and I got to tell ya if you find a exploit bug or cheater you stop that shyt dead in its tracks.

If speed hacking got fixed, EC:s popularity in Felucca would prolly grow exponentially and then the real pancakes between CC and EC users starts :pint:

But yea, I'd deffo want to see speed hacking getting fixed and worry about CC vs EC after...

Consider that UO had that big layoff, and they let go their head honcho. How often does that happen? And why?
Now consider that the servers seem to be having problems, and things seem a bit slow on the developer end.

I know reading between the lines can be full of fail, but I'm wondering if EA is at all happy with the profits from UO.

So I don't expect anything along these lines.

I've gotten accused of speedhacking three times before. I wasn't... Ping plays a huge part.

Ping plays a huge part of how one can perform but no one in this thread contested that.

That said, years of playing time should also be a factor in being able to see a speeder. Everyone knows those that move fast and everyone knows the difference. We all know that doing 65 miles a hour is the norm(I think as I am a Canadian), 75 is a ping issue and 105 is clearly something else.

Over the years I've known plenty of players who live much closer to my main shard then I do and plenty of them had much better systems and connections then I but over those last 7.5 years my main account has been open and the first 2.5 years Napa was online people could not out-run a mounted player.

This is a newer issue over the last 2 years or so when everyone has come to the conclusion that the chances of anything happening to a players account is so slight when it comes to speeding, scripting(unless your a bot) and client side mods that it is near a joke. Ban the bots, the scripters I don't know or care, client side edits are limited in usefullness but the speeding.....it has to be delt with.

  12. I think sometimes its easy to confuse good ping for speedhacking.
I ping roughly 60 to west coast shards and 50 to east coast, which is weird since I'm in the middle of both, BUT I know players who ping 10 to West Coast and 20 to East coast and easily outrun me on foot when I'm mounted.

Now mind you, I am not right there with them looking at their computers to see what they are running, but some of these people have no idea what the hell I'm talking about if I ask them if they are using so and so program.

It also depends on your connection too. I use to have 1.5mbps dsl.. and now I am on 20 mbps fiberoptic connection and I can tell a HUGE difference in my ping and how well I'm able to keep up with ppl who use to outrun me.

Yes, speedhacking needs to be fixed, I'm not arguing about that, but speedhacking isnt always the issue and sometimes those who arent doing anything get wrongfully accused for just having a better connection.

There are several things to consider in this debate about hacking and good ping. On the average most people I run into know nothing about truly optimizing their PC's. Some think they do, but when they run into what I call an extreme gamer they tend to get smoked. It's not all about hardware. Computer habits factor in on performance. The more junk you have on your pc, the slower it will be. So for kicks lets take a fictitious extreme gamers system and habits and compare.

    1. The EG only uses his system for gaming
    2. The EG has a dedicated Internet Connection. He doesn't share it in a LAN
    3. He uses a Hardware based firewall (Modem or Router) no software firewall.
    4. He doesn't download junk, or surf other than for patches, a needed IM, or Voip. So there is no need for virus, malware,or adware scanners.
    5. He installed his OS using Vlite, or Xlite thus giving him a light OS with the bare minimum services needed to run the OS and the Choice Games.
    6. He went into the Bios and disabled unneeded pci, usb, printer, gaming ports.
    7. Installed a dedicated sound card and a Killer Nic to help reduce CPU loads
    8. He installed tight low latency gaming Memory
    9. Overclocked his system to 4.2Ghz (on Air, Core2duo E8400,E8600,I5,and I7s can do this)
    10. He invested in a very good Solid State Drive
    11. He has decent Graphic Card(s). Not a big issue with UO. It is still a sprite based game and most of the graphics are generated through the CPU (that includes the EC)
    12. He goes through a barrage of tweaking, checking with tweakguides.com to make sure he didn't miss anything.
    13. He removes unneeded junk out of the UO folder and sets his UO.cfg file to more modern standards.

For the most part latency is an internal issue and not really to much on your hops. The quicker your cpu processes incoming and outgoing packets the faster your gaming will be and every pc can benefit. I walked a friend through a similar process and his rig was an ancient athlon XP 2800 and even today he uses the same system and gets called a hacker.

Until I see a video showing an unmounted player outrunning a Mounted player that's not obviously lagging, I call Shanannigans....(sp?)

  15. Trebr Drab

    Trebr Drab Guest

Wow. If people are outrunning you on foot, while you are mounted, you have a problem.

As far as speedhacking, I could see where someone who's extremely lagged might not be able to tell if that other guy is using the hack or not, because this guy's lagged and choppy in the first place. But for anyone who's not lagged much, it's easy to see if someone else if using it. It's easy to see the jumping, it's easy to see that they are moving far too fast to be running normally.

BTW, I've seen a few other players who lagged so much I could outrun them on foot. I feel for anyone lagged that much. But they knew they were lagged by their choppy and sticking movement. So they knew the problem was with them, and not others using cheats.

Good Ping is one thing, but I have a ping of 20 or sometimes less and playing the very fast EC and still some people are out-skipping me or just running through stuff.

    That's not cool.

  17. lol you think? It's because I always have other things running. I have my screenshot program, icq, vent, sometimes 2 vents, sometimes the internet is open.. sometimes media player, etc etc... so like another poster said, it also depends on what you all have running too...
That is why I said, its not exactly them speedhacking, its just me and my system running slower than theirs.

Someone has fast connection yada yada yada, really fast comp yada yada yada.

I have said this before and I say it again.

Take 1 experienced PvP:r from every shard (By experienced I mean in PvP, and grown up not some angry teenager).

Make them all pinpoint 10 speed hackers from that shard.

I'd say they get it right atleast 9/10

Rest are EC users and MAYBE, there's 1 guy with everything tweaked to the max using CC, but I doubt...

Yeah, there's a max speed set by the game. It's kinda easy to see when someone is exceeding that. No matter how good their rig is.

  22. UOKaiser

Actually just a small correction the max speed is capped at the server. It was put there to stop the crazy speed hacks that were around the early days. No one can exceed that unless they hack the server which hasn't being done since well never heard it done. Any speed hacks now are done computer side.

Moves next door to Eyes so I can get a 20 mbps fiber line!

Some of us are lucky to have slow dsl! Maybe one day my isp will spend some of their profits on upgraded services..... Got to love it when one company has a monopoly on the net in the area!

the same client hacks 10 years later rofl...

    *golf clap*

I played for a while now, and everyone runs at the same speed than me, I even tend to run a bit faster than most people, but I haven't compared much with pvpers, which is why I have no trouble knowing it's a real issue.

I met a few... and they cross a screen in two frames. Thats impossible, noone in trammel ever did that, and I seen thousands. I went twice in FEL and I was completely laughing my ass out.

You know in UO you always meet some stranger who you don't talk to, but somehow you're running in the same direction so you make it a race, I'm sure all of you had that many times.

The speed is almost the same, what makes you win the race is how you run around objects, which is how it's meant to be.

I have seen speedhack in action and it really works, well that was 10 years ago but I assume it's the same concept, since EA dosen't care about hackers because they provide a multi-million industry.

They became the EVIL... so EA dosen't need to play out evil, those punks do the job for them, keeps player hooked, dig it ?

EA knows exactly what people are running and why. They simply dont care. EA is not about making games better. They are about milking them for every cent they can. They refuse to put money into detection and enforcement. They would rather take money from people that hurt the game and keep on alientaing thier legit players. EA is a corporation, it is not a gamer interested in what the players actually want.

  26. I believe that there is a server-side "speed limit". The only speed hack that a player could make client-side would be something to make the player always move at the server-side speed limit. A non-hacking player with an optimized system and low ping would also move at the exact same speed as the "speed hacker", which makes it practically impossible for GMs to be able to tell whether it's a hacker or just a low ping on an optimized computer.

It also means that a fix for the speed hacking would probably be something in the form of throttling back speeds for everybody, maybe to something like 200 ping or so, which would make all of the people with brand-new optimized gaming computers and high-speed internet connections very, very angry.

Glad to see this thread hasn't died yet and others have seemed to notice the same issues as I.

    Megilhir Guest

FACT: Speed hack programs exist and are used.

FACT: UO has had innumerable exploits and bugs through 3rd party code manipulation. (Arirang: player house in Destard, complete with vendors.)

    FACT: Some people cheat.

    ASSUMPTION: UO is fun.

ASSUMPTION: There is a race between Hackers and Hackies.

ASSUMPTION: You can enjoy UO without PvP. Change the end-state and gaming expectations.

ASSESSMENT: UO will continue to be plagued by people who know how to exploit until UO decides to use cloud computing technology. If you go to PvP you will eventually run into a Speed Hacker. Perhaps the answer is to have everyone in Feluccia automatically default to Speedhack programing once they exit a Fel moongate. Then eveyone is hacked so no one is hacked.

I told them that back in 1998, it was Origin back then.

But they told me EA would not have any of it, because it would destroy the peripheral industry of virtual item commerce. Without duping and inflation, there would be no exponential industry for rich noobs exlpoitation.

It was Origin back then , I repeat.

I am the one who invented the script that allowed players to use 10000 commands with a simple shadow feedback loop.

It was so simple that it hurt, it hurt Origin so much that they had to bow down. It was all my fault !

EA sliced in and put in legal repercussions to the whole deal, so since my goal wasn't to get anyone in trouble... I completely stopped, and gave them the code. They corrected it the next week, somehow... just enough for the gold selling to keep occuring.

The reason I was hacking in the first place was to get the devs attention, that I had found something MUCH simpler and MUCH less expensive than cloud computing, much more performant as well.

But they tought I was a kid... so I hacked the heck out of it , just to show them how bad it was. My timing was bad it seems... because my intention turned into a nightmare.

It's still possible today, if you figure that one out Megilhir, I'll hats off to you.
