Why all the Siege "recruiting" lately? (+questions)

Discussion in 'UO Siege Perilous' started by Pazuzu, Dec 3, 2009.

    Pazuzu Guest

I see a heck of a lot of "recruiting" for Siege - posts in many different forums asking people to come to Siege. Why now? Or is it just "one of those things"? Just curious - as it's REALLY noticeable.

    Also, though, "why Siege?"

I'm a Day-1 player. I played back when there was no Siege, no Tram/Fel, no stat loss for "going Red", none of that. Sure, it was fun back then - but it was all we had. There was nothing to compare it to. Losing all your stuff when you died? Well, sure, what other way is there. As time went by and other MMOs came out, people came to expect that they could keep their hard-won stuff.

Now I'm in the same category, and I'm wondering why I'd want to go back to risking losing everything just for running into the inevitable "better than me" fighter? (Or bad case of lag!) Some items are really expensive... losing them would hurt. I'm sure you've heard all this before...

    What's the allure?

Where is the fun knowing all you risk is some fame or reputation??

  4. Pazuzu

That's exactly the kind of argument/statement that helps keep people away from Siege, btw.

Time. To you it's "some fame or reputation" - to me, it's the time I spent getting it. I have very limited time to play nowadays. Back when I started I was much younger and had a much less full schedule... :D

Half the blues on regular shards are worse than most of the reds here.

If you give respect here, you'll mostly get respect. If you're disrespectful, people are able to show their displeasure with more than just words.

As for the recent push for people, I don't know. I haven't been pushing. I had more to write, in a more eloquent fashion, but I'm at work.

Look I realize this is going to be taken as "another Carebear wanting to start double whopper with cheese", but I'm serious - I want to learn what the attraction is, why people do Siege (especially people that AREN'T primarily into PvP), and who knows, maybe I will decide to try it firsthand.

From the outside it doesn't seem SUPER attractive, but obviously there is SOME draw or I wouldn't be making this post.

Players have to depend more on using replacable gear. Gear is more tailored to your skills or approach to the problem of not being able to wear the best suit available. Crafters are more needed. PLayer vendors are more needed. Risk from PKs is unpredictable, making going out and doing daily business funner. You can go hunt in doom and know what to expect and prepare for it. Or you can go to an unsafe player event and see how things get tossed up. Rivalry can be a blast! Farming while looking over my shoulder is fun and I miss that. So I would like to see more reds join SP.

    Quick notes:

    - Single character per account.
This makes crafter characters more worthwhile. Not everybody has every craft skill worked up.
Also, you get to know who is who. This provides accountability. If you're griefing somebody, you can't just switch to one of your 4 other characters until they forget about it.
Only having one character also means you (mostly) can't solo everything in the game yourself. You can use soulstones to switch skills, but you won't have all your stats perfect without working them over a few days. This means you have to group with others to have other angles covered.

    -No transfers on/off Siege.
This means massive duping never caught on here, and our economy, while not perfect, isn't ridiculous. Again, you'll get to know people here. You'll see people as they train up and get to know them, they won't be transplanted here and immediately solo everything. They'll probably be grouping with people while in RoT, before they can solo the high end stuff.

    -You can kill people.
See somebody script-mining, and this offends you? Kill them. Somebody's being greedy with a particular monster hunting spot, and won't share? Kill them. Somebody killed your quiet miner-friend while they were hunting? Kill them.
If you're not into killing, that's fine. But how would society work without the 'threat' of violence? What's stopping me from running up, groping your girlfriend, spitting in your drink, and peeing on your shoe? In a Trammel world, nothing.

    -Wulf is here.
I am pretty awesome. And yes, I am here. Isn't that enough?

    Back to work.

  10. Siege is unique in many ways:

It's true risk vs reward, if you take the risks, you can reap the rewards. Whether that's completing a champ spawn without being raided, chasing off the raiders or even farming 10k in gold from your favorite spot.

It's also more of a challenge: That all arti suit you are afraid to lose most people don't run on Siege, don't get me wrong, there are plenty that do, but with the introduction of Imbuing, running a nice suit isn't that horrid to replace if lost. But not having the ultra-decked out suit makes peerless/champs/etc a challenge as they were intended to be.

There still is a player run economy, as you can't sell items to NPC's and costs are very high, people rely on getting goods from other players.

A bit of excitement always having to look over your shoulder isn't a bad thing. It's frustrating the first couple [several?] times, but you get used to it and come to miss it when not present to a degree.

Siege is what you make it, you'll have to put some time in as nothing is immediate on Siege, but it can be some of the most fun you've ever had in Ultima. I've been playing Siege since it's birth and haven't touched another shard since. Done some bouncing back and forth between various other games, but always come back to Siege & UO.

On the subject of losing stuff...keep stocked and its not so bad. I run with the elven HP regen suit. I keep several sets on hand at all times. Its not as wonderful as wearing arties? Well it works for what I do. Others like stamna regen, or barbed leather or whatever and when you face a PK, you may not be able to tell what he is wearing and how it helps or hurts his skills and play style. More customability..more unknowns.

    Pazuzu -

    1. There's a lot of come to Siege posts lately because the Siege EM is putting on a "Come to Siege" event in a few days.

    2. The chance of dying to another player or the chance of loosing all your stuff adds risk, and that risk makes the reward more enjoyable. Think of it this way, if you are fighting a greater dragon. We both know to fight and kill a greater dragon, all you have to do is A, B, C, and D and the greater dragon is dead. If you mess up, you die, run outside, get rezzed, come back and do it again. But, the end result is, YOU WILL WIN. There is no risk. To me, if there is no risk there is no fun, I mean what's the point knowing that no matter what you will always win an encounter? Why bother? On Siege, there are two factors that change this. #1 - someone else can come kill you. And you can't just do A, B, C, D, and expect someone else to die. #2 - you could die and lose your stuff. Basically, it's not guaranteed that I can kill the greater dragon, therefore there is a chance I could succeed, there is a chance I could fail and lose everything, thus there is true risk.

    3. Because there is no insurance on siege, you can't keep your items. Because you can't keep your items, you are not willing to pay astronomical prices for good gear. Basically things are cheaper here. Especially with imbuing, you can now find decent pvp/pvm able weapons for a few hundred k (that you would insure). So while there is risk in dying, you're not going to dye and lose out on a 200,000,000 suit. When I die, I lose out on a 3k basic GM barbed leather suit (oddly enough which is probably the same cost of your insurance, heh).

So what you just described is exactly what he is saying. Risk vs. Reward.
You are saying you value that aspect, the fame loss. But if you had a choice would you even risk that? I think most would not. From a Siege perspective, that is not risk. We take it to the fullest extent allowed on UO. We not only risk something like fame, but we risk our items as well(not to mention our reputation on the shard). Sure, many use throw away or non magic items, but not all do. Therein lies risk again. Sure, you could use the best runic armor and orny and inquis and have a huge advantage over someone not. Riskier. But more rewarding, believe me it is MUCH MUCH more rewarding to risk it all like that and win than to have every item blessed and double insured and never goto felucca. Think about it. On siege EVERYWHERE is felucca; Doom is felucca, Ishlenar, Tokuno, Ter Mur, the abyss. So in my opinion, just stepping out your door on siege has inherint risk that is NON EXISTANT on prodo shards. Risk vs. Reward. Bottom line.

On prodo shards, remember when people used to line up and take turns killing creatures because the hunting spot was so busy? (like when the ants came out and people lined up for the queens). Then you got some jerk that came along and kept killing them and ignored the line totally?

On Siege you can kill that jerk.

    'nuff said.

    Unless he's better/faster/on a better connection than you. :/

That's where these "just kill them" arguments always fail: sure you COULD kill him, but no matter how good you might be... someone's always better.

You have a very valid question so I will try and explain it to you.

The first time your in combat and you know damn well that its all on the line.... its all up for grabs and it comes right down to who is the better player, who is the smarter player, who has more experience in PvP, you will notice something if you stop and really examine the moment. You will taste something metallic in your mouth... that is adrenaline. You will quickly recognize that you are freaking out and the excitement is keeping you from acting in a rational manor and you DIE. You are a bit ticked off that you lost but you are DEFINITELY standing up from your chair and you don't know why. You get more gear you practice harder you try and make friends with people who can teach you how to be better and some day you master both the game and your own emotions. It is a powerful day in your life. But then the other foot falls and you are the one taking instead of giving and you find even MORE adrenaline.

The PvPers on Siege are junkies. We live for running into a swarm of enemies and coming out the other side with there loots. We fully expect to die and we don't care. Its only pixels and there are always more where they came from. Don't worry about gear EVER. There will be a day when you have no space left in your castle to hold it.

And if your interested, this shard will welcome you with arms open and then show you exactly what this game was meant to be.....fun.

True, and thats part of the fun as well. Plus, if the person is a jerk, you are likely to have help killing him. The difference is you have the OPTION to kill him. Thats not an option on prodo shards.

At lot of Siege is about adrenaline. It's fun getting in a fight on Siege, knowing that you can lose something.

Think of it this way. You can go skydiving or you can watch a video of skydiving. The thrill is in the idea that you have something to lose.

If your not that type of person, then you probably won't like Siege. But if you are bored of running around with a greater dragon killing everything easily with very little risk to yourself, and find the game to not be challenging, then its time for Siege.

Excellent sir! Glad we convinced you to at least try us.

I recommend getting in touch with NEW guild as soon as possible. I know you are not new to the game but you are new to the shard and they can help you with resources, training tips, and even a place to stay for a while.

dont you get tired of seeing people sitting around luna on prodo shards in billion dollar suits, just sitting there all day, not even talking? thats why i left chessy, everyone looked good, but no one did anything. Here on Siege, even the simple act of visiting the bank can be exciting.Atleast it is if we thieves have it our way hehe. Hope to see ya soon! Keep your pockets full of goodies!

Siege is not for all, some love the risk, others will never like it.

For me, there is only one shard worth playing. I had tryed to play on my old shards from before Siege was born but I get bored on the trammel facets and the Felucca facet lost something.

On Siege we have everything, RP, Crafters, Wars, Alliances, PvP'ers, non PvP'ers. We are like one large community, who can be enemies and friends on same time.

We don't have the hate between red and blue or the hate between PvP'ers and non PvP'ers you see on normal shards.

Our crafters are respected and so ar most of out PK's.

If you start playing Siege and can handle dying to an other player, you may find something here you won't find on other shards.

I have to go with the pvp adrenaline that keeps me going on this shard. When my mouse hand is twitching and I have chewed my cigarette filter in half because I just made it through some heavy stuff in the field I realize why I play this shard.

The fact that i have Return Imbuing customers because that ncie stuff i made for them two weeks ago is gone because some nasty pker or faction rvial took it from them, I realize why I play this shard.

It is about player interaction; with customers, other merchants, my guild-mates, my enemies. it's about being able to be drawn into a conflict regardless of where I am at. Even guarded towns are not 100% safe.

I use one of the higher end faction suits around; my enemies sell it back to me for around 500k, but they do not have to do that. Sometimes they give it back, and yes sometimes It get trashed. Don't liek factions? Find yourself a trustworthy imbuer and get your self set up with some very nice, low cost suits.

Almost everything has value here since SA hit; crap loot unravels into much needed residue and essence, 120 power scrolls are alot easier to obtain with scroll binders. I am ramblinga bit but I came back tot he game after a 4 year lay off, spent 2 weeks on atlantic then re-opened my original uo account that I I had played on siege from 99 -04. If you like what UO had to offer back then then this is the shard for you and you probably will be glad you gave ita try.

You know what would make it so much better? Bring a friend or two. I did. Two days into me playing the shard and describing it to my father, he and his wife also packed up and left pacific.

For me it's a good place to play. I like crafting and it makes it worthwhile here. I can't say that I have lost much in the way of uber items when I have been pk'd here either. I don't tend to carry much of value on me most of the time and if someone wants the armor I have made myself, fine with me. I can make more. For the most part, if I get killed I rarely loose much of anything.
I think that the community is very tight on this shard and you find that teamwork and relationships become very important.
I can't really say what UO was like in it's early days as I have only been playing a few years now and all but two months have been on Siege.
If you ever decide to try out our shard, there are MANY here that would be happy to show you what the shard is about. For me it is my UO home and I am happy that I decided to give it a try.

As a UO customer since 98 I will add my 2gp as to what is part of the allure here.

It may be for some that same allure that is part of UO itself, the way it was first designed.

And part of that allure is every customer, makes this newbie pixel life to enter somewhere into the UO world to become whatever we set them out to become, overcoming all challenges and obstacles in our lil character's way for them to BECOME !

Now back in the day I was in Order. I also went into factions when factions were new. I selected CoM cuz I like challenges in UO and that was originally the wimpy most hardest to defend faction compound that EA UO made. GAH ! Talk about airy !!

But now all my Chesapeake chrs. became DONE, in one way or another the newness of UO began to wane.

INSURANCE also hit. Now I came to Siege in 2004. I made pure crafters here and only those to play on Siege.

I never was much FOR insurance, I do not even insure on when I play on Chesapeake, cuz to me, part UO's magic was LOSING and GAINING again...cuz be it monsters the dev. team created to invade our yards, or pks we all LOST our stuff lost our lil pixel lives, and moved on.

Someway to me UO mimaced rl where we lose things, lose people, lose life even but [UNLIKE rl] in UO we can remake it/ rebuy it/ redo it/ start over...get a res and move on. :) Losing stuff to me builds character, cuz if ya give up, ya end up quitting, and who said life had to be easy street all the time, let alone a pixel game world !

It should be fun, it can build character, a game can teach us if we lose something we can work, to regain it....and it may even teach us that gameplan can work in RL even where some tornado blows our home to bits..rl insurance may or may not cover it...what ya gonna do QUIT ! ? NOOOOOO you may be upset even cry at whatever we lost or whomever, and then, you start all over again...again and again and again !

The allure of Ultima Online has always been making a newbie, entering the uo world and lands, dying to whatevers, surviving whatever befalls that pixel chr. and becoming whatever, we wanted them to become !

And when the fire grows dim, and we feel we done it all, then the allure of trying some shard even harder, may be why we tried Siege at all..to keep on keepin on playing UO ! :)

    Hardcore!

To wit, I agree with all of these folk. I am also, as you asked, basically a non-pvp'er on Siege. I hunt, farm, craft, sell...etc. I guess I could be considered a merchant, but I keep all the good stuff myself, so not a very good one I suppose. I love the fact that my well-developed character can put a whomp down on someone annoying me ingame at any time, or die trying. Freedom.

Well... Siege is great for crafters. Siege is great for community (look at our post volume V other shards!). Siege is more challenging - even camping the Yew sheep pens is dangerous. And stuff doesn't matter as much (at least to players playing at my admittedly sucky level) as it does on other shards.

    I love Siege.

"Look I realize this is going to be taken as "another Carebear wanting to start double whopper with cheese", but I'm serious - I want to learn what the attraction is,"

this is how i look at it .
you are sittin around watchin a football game with your buddies . in trammel its like your team is ranked higher , you have home field advantage , you are expected to win and you do . you're like , ok we wan ... great . whats for dinner ?
on siege its like you are the away team. 2 of your best players are out sick. the odds makers give you the snowballs chance in hell of winning . you struggle thru the game never giving up then at the last moment god smiles the universe blinks and your team pulls a come from behind victory . you jump off the couch , spill the popcorn and yell @#^* yeah ! .

thats what its like sticking it out long enough to get good and win on siege.
sure you are going to die dozens of times , probably hundreds ,but when you finally win... its effin glorious.

victory here means something . even small victories .the pride that comes from building in such a harsh environment . pulling off a champ spawn under the radar . getting home with some nice loot after running from a pk. (you learn to get good at running)

then comes the day when you stop running . you turn and face the pk , hold your ground and make the mofo eat dirt.

    @#^* yeah !

yeah you are gonna die alot but dont give up . expect it . keep a few suits ready . sooner or later you will get your revenge.

and altho it may seem tempting to use some of the various cheats available , dont . trust me , true victory tastes so much better . if you have to win that way you might as well stay on trammel.

we play for the challenge . are you up to it ?

I can also probally add that Siege makes you count on your friends again. When i first started playing the game on Atlantic it was a thrill to be hitting a dangerous location just knowing a death almost guarenteed the loss of all my gear ( unless you have buddies in game on ICQ) hehe

Insurance killed the need to drop everything in an instant in order to save a friend and his decaying corpse. On Siege that comraderie still exists...though sometimes you find the decaying corpse is also occupied by a red/orange player :fight:

  38. This really sums up how grim prodo shards are to me. Soon before I quit Atl a guy in newb armour at Luna says "anyone wanna go hunting?" I initially thought "wow how embarassing" then realised he had nothing at all to be ashamed of. He was ignored ofc the bots kept spamming their shop gates and the afk posers kept on looking leet =]

Wow! Now this is a great observation. I remember the same thing back when I played another shard. I was a nobody...

I am still a nobody but people know my name here!

Just to be clear, I was infamous long before I became a Forum mod.

Then try it for another month. Siege is like fine scotch... Once the taste is acquired, nothing else will do.

I started uo shortly before tram was introduced, and for most of that time I've been a dedicated tram player. Then, for no reason at all, two days ago I decided to create a char on siege.

Not 5 minutes after I was born I was sitting in NEW's guildhouse, picked up by one of their co-gms. ten minutes later, both guildmasters were there, providing me with starting items, helping me train, and filling me in on all the intanglible differences between seige and everywhere else.

20 minutes after being born onto the shard, I was training with several other new players under the watchful eye of the guildmasters. Other players were popping in and out, the place was busy.

On my home shard, I could be in the presence of a dozen others who'd never say a word to each other, even in someone tried to strike up conversation. But on siege, I suddenly felt like it was 1998 again, when the game was exciting. All I did for 2 hours was train magery, something I've done many times before, but it was a better two hours than I've spent in-game in years.

I havn't been able to log in for a couple of days because of my work schedule. But for the first time in years, I'm actually truly excited as I look forward to logging in again.

    Welcome Sayler

I hope you will get many exciting hours/days on Siege.

I think Siege is only place in UO where you will find some of the old pre trammel spirit.
