Ultima Online has turned 17. What are some of the things that keep you playing or make you return to this game after all these years? Why do you still play?

I am writing an article to be posted later this week on a site I write for, Video Game Scoreboard. I've posted this question on Facebook, Twitter, UOF, here and I'll be posting a few other places as well. I'd like to get a bunch of well rounded answers, thus asking this in many places.

Disclosure: Answers to this may be used in an article later this week. By responding to this thread, you agree that your answer and your forum name may be used in the article.

I enjoy the various communities and role play. It is pretty easy to find something going on to join in with on one of the shards if you look.

The other aspect I love is that even after all these years there is always something new to learn or some part of old lore to explore. Having to work with the community to find out the back story on items from a long past event is pretty fun.

There is also the Finest Good Old Moonglow Red this side of the Pixels for the interested party.

*Takes and ember from the fire and lights his pipe - Stands and raises a glass of Good Old Moonglow Red in salute towards the lady asking questions by the bar*

For me, mainly one thing. The community and all the great people I have met in it over the last 17 years. I have always considered the UO community the best gaming community by far.

Classless character system; customizable and non-instanced housing; gardening & fishing systems; you aren't forced into being a combat character with crafting tacked on top of a mandatory combat gameplay scheme.

I have met many friends here, it was my first mmo and everything since is a let-down, I could go on and on and on, but those are the major reasons.

For me, it is quite plain.....there simply is no game out there with the vastness, depth, complexity AND flexibility of Ultima Online.

This game has gone through 17 years of fine tuning, additions, numerous different Development Teams each adding different things to the game thus always enriching it month after month, year after year.

Just imagine, over 17 years, all of the manpower hours that have been invested into the Development of UO, its fine tuning, its enrichment....
A new game, to be not even closely comparable to a 17 years game like UO would need a whole lot of manpower hours to make it as vast, as complex, as rich and full of content and as fine tuned........

No game out there, to my knowledge, allows a player to do so many things and at the same time gives so much flexibility as Ultima Online.

Nothing gets even by far close to UO, not for me at least..........

The outdated graphics ? I do not give a damn....

Graphics to me is only an eye catching thing to attract to a game initially, what would keep me playing the game is its contents, depth, vastness....
    UO has it.

I could never play an empty game even if it had the best graphics in the world.

i continue UO because its very casual, you can be very lazy and not have to constantly update gear like some other games. plus the versatility of the skill system (no set "classes") player housing is also more substantial than any other game i know of. i also play for the classic style graphics, you just cant get that feel in most new games.

honestly, if i had not already played and invested a great deal of time and had accumulated a substantial amount of virtual property over the years i would never start fresh at UO currently unless it was a free shard. But its just not worth throwing away that much investment at this point.

I came back after a 10 year hiatus because there is truly no other game out there that has ever compared. From the in-game adventures, to the crafting, the community, decorating your house, fidgeting with various templates - there is just so much to do. I just had the hunger to get back into UO and other console games from the same genre just weren't getting it done for me. Now only if college didn't get in the way of my gaming life back a decade ago, maybe I wouldn't have ever left...

I stayed with way too many accounts because of houses and idocs. UO had the ability to customize, decorate homes plus the chance for a treasure at an idoc.

I will continue to stay with way less accounts for the same reasons.

I stay because of friends... and the depth and breadth of the game. There is NO other game like UO out there. Somewhere where I can really feel the role of my character. Where the role-play is so immersive... Where I can build, design and create my home in a role-play environment and it can be what I want it to be.

I can play at any level whether I just made the character 5 min ago or I've had the character 15 years. Sure it has it's moments where it can be a grind... but when the grind gets old you can do something else. There is so much to do in UO that it is difficult to do it all... Once I reach one goal there are so many more to aspire to. My first goal was to get a home... finished that... then I wanted to get into the RP community... did that. Finish my first 5 characters to 7x GM.. well I'll say that goal changed over the years. My latest goal would be to have a functional tamer on every shard.... this one is going to take me some time.... so I suppose I'll be busy for a long while. One step at a time.

But all in all it's the community that keeps me here. That and I like many others have invested an awful lot in UO over the 15+ years I've played... I just can't see throwing that investment out the window when UO still has the potential for so much more. I am anxiously awaiting the High Res graphics update. It really I think will be worth waiting for. The EM program has for me brought new life back to the game. It gives my characters a sense of purpose and belonging... it furthers the RP and the fiction of the game offering new life to it. Certainly goes a long way in keeping the game from going stale. IT has the potential to really do wonderful things... as does the Governor program. I'd like to see that potential maximized.

Played since Beta, because....love the friends and community, I can do what I want--if I want to fight, I can fight, if I want to fish, I fish, if I want to do trades, redecorate a house. there is a depth to it that is unbeatable.

cause what else makes my high end pentium win 95 box purr like a kitten :) and my aol internet seem fast

in truth it is the sandbox feel of not having to do a quest the sets up another quest, i can be, do, make my own path in game without having to follow any hard written path in game, my miner can slay mighty beasts, and the next day use him for treak or treats and begging

Same reason I still play Baldurs gate ever few years I guess. I like the classic art and classic feel, and all the fine memories I had when I first played. UO also has the benefit of momentum since I've been a subscribers on and off since I was a teen.

The experience is nothing like it once was, but it's still fun enough when compared to modern mmo's in my opinion. I only play regularly for maybe a month or two a year now a days, as I get bored with it fairly quickly, but I still enjoy it for what it is when I do play.

I like the old school feel of the game. I also like that I can always find new things to do. The game is quite an adventure. I've tried some newer games and none can compare for me. UO keeps me interested year after year.

Honestly, mostly because I've played so long. I've put too much time into my accounts to simply walk away. I also enjoy the group that I play with. Also, there's always something to do for whatever mood I'm in... PvM, PvP, suit building, etc.

    Ultima on Line is UNIQUE.

Ultima Online is a reflection of the real world. This place is like living in another world where players can almost control their lives temporarily. For me UO gives me a break from the demands of the real world.

The game supplies the tools for the Players to use and it is up to each player to decide how they want to use those tools. There will never enough time to learn how to do everything that is present in the game.
There is so much content to choose from and constant change to everything you learn to do.

PUZZLES. UO is a constant puzzle to be solved no mater where you go or what you try to do. It sure keeps the brain active. If you can't do it by yourself, or figure out how to do something, and need help, there are always players willing to help. The game used to have COMPANIONS to help. Those were stopped but recently the game has introduced ADVISORS to help players.

History repeats itself in the real world and in this game.

The ART and ANNIMATIONS fascinated me from the very start in 1997. Meeting a bear that was scratching behind his ear made me fall off my chair laughing. I was hooked on Taming from that moment on.

The idea of flying a magic carpet sent me hunting for a cave like the one in the Original Solo UO games (not on line), but instead I found Destard Dungeon and a whole new world of friendly Dragons. I worked so hard on my taming skills but didn't even know how to release my tamed pets. Had to learn how to do that too. Later, UO changed friendly dragons into dangerous stronger creatures. Suddenly Tamers had to have better skills to become a better tamer.

Ultima Online never stops changing and growing.

Meeting people from every walk of life and making friends and enemies in the game gives one a better understanding of not only others, but of one's self too while you grow older and learn from others.

So many fascinating stories from other acquaintances being able to listen to everyone chat and talk about their experiences, both in this Unique and ever changing World of UO and in their real lives.

This place is like living in another world temporarily and forgetting real life.

Oh gazooks .. yakking my head off again. Sorry. They don't call me "wordy bird " for nothing.
I gotta get out of here. I don't have time to edit this mess. UO Locked all the open chests that could be looted. My stealther is working on LOCK PICKING SKILL! Grrr ... *waves* - - must get some done before going to bed. Morning comes too soon. ... grumble ..

UO become my second life, here I have friends, memories, stuff to do.
There had been years, where I had been close to give up. I guess I still hope to see life back in my forest and in towns.
I love meeting new people, interact with them, from trading stuff or to hang out with them or fight them.

Most have alredy been said about the game itself how deep and how much there is to do. And still new things are added . I was never bored one minute. I had teenagers living at home and played with them when there was only the old lands. I still have adult friends from that time and more added ower the years. I still meet new people and make new friends. Community means more than any other part of this. Im now retired and even if I still hunt I have more time to spend on crafting and community things. Educate and help new people to get going. Give returning people a hand. Meet people from other countries . Uo is a place wehre you can grow older and still find so much to do! No need to change to some other game, just pick other things that you didnt have time for when life were more hectic. I hope to still sit here with my friends in 10 years discovering new things and go on new adventures!

I recently rediscovered UO after having played it on dial-up when I was about 15 - and I remember then having to spend the money from my weekly paper round on dial-up pay per minute internet bills.

I stopped playing after MMO's really took off and I started playing Everquest.

I recently came back to UO largely by accident. Thinking it had long sinced died and the game would have vanished I stumbled upon it by accident and it has hooked me all over again.

I think UO is a victim of it's own success. A success that came too early. Somehow they managed to create the perfect online roleplaying game mechanics with one of the very first MMO's. There simply is nowhere to go from here as far as I'm concerned. The freedom of gameplay and the crafting mechanics are second to none even after 17 years in existence and many millions of pounds being invested elsewhere in the industry to try and capitilise on the MMO market.

UO will, for me, always be the game I remember most fondly and my finest ever moment was first discovering that we could tame and ride llama's. I was about 15 at the time and didn't even know what a llama was. I remember grouping together with some friends and riding into combat in full platemail on the back of our trusty llamas and attacking an army of mongbats.

What other game could ever hope to come close to that sort of memory?

Same reason as Peekay, more or less.

Each time I've returned (well, except for 2010's RTB, where I kept to myself and PvM'd exclusively/set it up so I'd never PvP again, since I foresaw a future where LS would be dead...but my prediction was wrong), I've run into old frenemies every time I've returned.

At this point, only one is missing, but I have no idea if he'll ever return. Even if he did he wouldn't be around for very long. Would be nice to duel him again though. It's been...7 years since our last one.

Originally attempted to start again in May 2012. Played my old characters on my dead shard and lasted for about a week. Nobody around, too boring, why pay $12/month for an MMO if you're not getting the first 'M'? Then I tried again in Jan 2013, starting on Atlantic with a new character. Found a guild full of good people a short time later and that was it. Honestly if it weren't for the guild, I probably would have stopped playing awhile back.

But beyond that it's a sort of love/hate relationship with the game. Over time I have developed strict and specific ideas of what I want out of a sandbox MMO. Even though there are a number of things about UO that are broken, absurd, ignored, and frustrating, the game fits my idea of a sandbox more than nearly every other game out there. The one exception is EVE Online, but even with EVE, it lacks a certain kind of character that is very unique to UO. And while UO will probably never truly fit my view of the 'perfect sandbox', it is still a place where genuine adventure can be had.

No predesigned classes, no quest you "must" do to advance the story, you can chose if you play in a group or as a lone wolf, people spend years decorating (not my style), other spend years fishing (even less my style), or there are pure crafters out there who prosper because of the fine items they make.....
And if you are looking for (fighting-)action there is plenty of that too....
If you have someone to teach you the first steps, UO can be learned esily.....
I think I could go on for pages, but in its essence:
UO let's me do what I want or can do at that time....played it for 16 years now and never got bored yet.

In simple terms I play because I enjoy it
The vast diversity means there is something I can find to do to suit whatever mood I happen to be in. From low stress, undemanding mining to a fast paced attention needing battle. I can play alone, or I can play with friends, or I can go along to an organised event and meet strangers. The choice is wide and so are the opportunities.
From my rural setting in the UK I have met and become friends with people in all parts of the world. UO has expanded my horizons without my moving from my chair.

    Helloooo Petra Fyde!
Canada here (me), the land of Ice and snow where the north winds blow - Love your post! :cheerleader:
I didn't mention the following in my reply to this thread. Am sure many others had something like this happen: Care-giving family member restricted real life socialization for many years but UO helped with that, especially in the evenings while patient was sleeping.

Strange: I often have wondered WHY do I keep paying and playing UO? This thread has been answering that question in spades!

I started in Beta because I loved the Ultima PC series and played at least 40 hours a week, every week until around 1999/2000. I left the game because my brothers started playing Everquest and everyone I played UO with had moved on. Between then and 2004-2005, I played EQ, WoW, and just about every MMO that came out during that time. In Everquest, I was a hardcore raider, raiding 5-7 nights a week. But, no game ever kept my interest like UO did. Even with all it's faults, it was still the best game out there to me.

Then in 2004 I came back to UO (while still playing EQ) because I reconnected with someone I had met playing UO (we eventually got married in real life) and started back up again. While there were a lot of new things to learn, at the core it was still the game I fell in love with. Admittedly, I couldn't make millions selling reagent, scrolls, potions and rune books like I did before, but the game is just so much more than that.

If I get tired farming a champion spawn, I can go fishing or crafting or mining or a half dozen other things. It isn't the same experience/leveling grind like in EQ or WoW. It wasn't raiding the same raids over and over for 3 months.

It's just the opened ended variety and every facet being different that keeps me in this game. (though admittedly, poor decisions and worse management by the devs is pushing me closer and closer to the day where I will just close my 4 remaining accounts).

For me Ultima Online lets me truly be me. My clothing, my colors, my armour, my mount, my house, my way of talking, my pace of hunting, which is kinda haphazard! It is a game that you can customize to you and your gaming style... The UO says it all... You! Oh! maybe it's subliminal... Richaaaard??!!

So many other people have already said many of the things I would put as my "top reasons" for preferring, and often returning, to UO and the unique things it offers.

One thing that simply amazes me what with how MANY different MMO's have been made is how almost no one else has even so much as considered the level-free design. The level-free design of UO means that while there are certainly places dangerous for newly created characters, there is almost no such thing as something in UO that friends can't do together. There is a massive (and often crippling) hidden mini-game in the design of virtually every other MMO (and let's face it.. all of them are basically copying WOW, which in and of itself was merely a more refined version of the Everquest formula of level, level, level, then raid, raid, raid) where you have to try to plan things around who is within very close level of you, very close gear progression of you, and if you plan to play with a friend you two practically better set an arrangement in stone and sign it in blood that you will only play together for the same amount of hours. Otherwise, you get so out of sync in terms of levels, gear and power that you rapidly find you can't do anything meaningful together in game at all. I remember in UO things like impromptu guild gatherings where every member who was online would just up and go to Shame or something, for kicks. New joins, old vets, well equipped players, poorly equipped ones, we'd all go together and just take care of the group. You can't do that kind of thing even if you want to in another MMO. They've sold out hardcore to the idea that the only possible reason any player would have to keep paying sub fees or keep playing their game is to get massive leaps in character power on an ongoing basis. It creates this horrible and endemic situation where there's a huge glut of players at max level or the top end of the powercurve, with everyone who joins late or is levelling a new character essentially has to solo the entire game and just rush through to catch up. It makes 99% of the total game content pointless wasteland.

Granted... UO did not entirely escape some of this design with the horrible changes surrounding AoS and bringing in a Blizzard design team on contract to "spice up" the game with the stupid stat gear and powerscrolls and everything. But UO remains a game where you can pick up your friends and always go do something together, no matter how they're built or how much they've played. You simply cannot do that in virtually any other MMO due to level and gear differences translating into astronomical differences in power levels.

UO is a refreshing break from some of the current games that require a lot of time and resources.

No other game has such a refreshing feeling when u kill another player..in other games it almost feels scripted...being a murderer in UO takes some decent skill to be effective..not just spam the same root spells non stop

The satisfaction of seeing progress toward a goal - whether it's another gain on a character, a better piece of armor, replenishing a chest of supplies for crafting - and knowing those little steps of progress keep adding up, day after day, week after week, month after month.

I returned to uo back in june and i havent regretted it. Sure the game is smaller now and alot of the people i knew dont play anymore. The small knit community is well worth it though. Everyone knows everyone, theres also a ton of content to do. I love how uo will allow me to go monster killing, go pvp, then craft some, decorate my house, go to an auction, or if i just wanna hang out in luna shopping while talking to my friends in vent.

This is what drew me back in
