Why is it so hard to play a dexxer in pvp right now?

    When I left the game almost three years ago now there were lots of dexxers in pvp, and many of the most feared pvp'rs on my shard were dexxers. There are still dexxers in pvp, but not very many, and even few of them are in the top tier of pvp'rs.

    My question is, why is this the case? What has changed in the past three years that has resulted in this?

    I know from playing my dexxers that it can be virtually impossible to close to make the kill. I don't remember it being this difficult three years ago. I can think of four possible reasons off the top of my head. Are there other reasons I haven't thought of?

    (And while I am mentioning cheats here, this is not meant to accuse anyone. I'm just trying to figure out what is going on here.)

    - Everyone's computer is faster and connections are better, making it easier to maintain distance from an attacker.
    - I am aware that there are scripts which claim to keep a specified distance between the script user and attackers, but I honestly can't think of any situation that I've been in where I have noted anything that looked like scripted behaviour to me, unless the scripts are far more sophisticated than I am guessing they are.
    - Again I haven't noticed this, but are there cheats that allow you to cast or use your bow and move at the same time? (I'm not talking about moving shot here.)
    - Some will say speed hacking, but again, I haven't noticed anyone moving any faster than I move, so I'm not inclined to think that this is the issue.

    My vote is for the first option in the list, and if that is the case, is there anything that the devs can do to make melee a viable choice in pvp again?

    Is there something I've missed here?

    Are there PVP damage caps for melee, and are they the same as archery? I know I've never hit anyone for more than 35 on my composite with AI.

    Ummm...What the hell game are you playing???

    Killing people on dexxers is easier than it has ever been!!! Hence why there are SOOOOOOO many dexxers!!!

    Yes there is a damage cap on AI's...its 35, that applies to all melee combat including lightning strike.

    Killing people on mages is more difficult. Due to the lack of defence, disarm works wonders.

    If you are struggling to kill people on a dexxer...well...umm...

    K so, my question may have seemed random and unrelated but there was a purpose.

    If the damage cap on melee is 35 and you can reach it with archery, at range, there is little incentive for someone to specialize in melee unless they're doing it for fun or to be different.

    For example someone using an Ornate axe, 60 SSI, 120 Arch/tac, 100 lumberjacking, and 180 sta will swing that puppy at 64 DPS and mow down spawns.

    However throw them in the PVP arena and they're doing the samee damage as random archer_nub_#12553 who didn't make the same investment in skills, time, knowledge, or gear. Hence, the popularity of archery... more bang for the buck.

    I would love to see more melees in PVP. Maybe increase the damage cap from melee weapons so that it's better than archery. Doesn't have to be a lot.

    However,

    That same ornate axe wielding lumber dexxer can hit for around 80ish with a double axe double strike.

    You see, the 35 cap is on specials...not base hits. If you happen to hit the person harder than 35...then dont use specials :)

    For example, I hit people harder [once cursed] on my sampire using a normal hit that i do from AR ignore.

    The difference is, on weapons such as a katana. The damage is generally low, so using the AR ignore boosts the damage.

    Well then that's really good news. There must be other reasons like connection issues etc why melee is not as popular. I do know some PVPers who have both melee and archery however.

    I was kinda thinking a Sampire might be fun in PVP for the huge STA regen, life leech, and auto curing of poison!

    I'm trying to come up with a sampire config which works in both PVM and PVP by swapping a couple skills around. I came up with a good one but it lacks parry. I hear parry's effect on archery is huge, and it would be so nice to mess with those archers.

    Also is bush of much use in PVP, you can't score honor crits on players.

    I dont not agree with Rev, not even the slightest. At least on Europa the number of dexers is LOW.
    Maybe Rev count archers as dexers? If so thats another question in this game we call Ultima Gimparchers Online.

    Thats not even close to correct. 120 swords, 120 Tactics, 120 Anatomy, 100 Lumber jack & 100% DI from items.
    Now go hit someone with Crushing blow, cast evil omen before for greater resaults.
    After you have done his, please come back here and tellme that you only hit for 35dmg.

    The reason that ppl dont play dexers today is quite simple, they play archers.
    Archery can do everything melee can and ontop of that they can shoot from a distance, Chug while vielding 2 handers, Double hit spell, 40ssi and the list goes on.

    The only upside for dexers are:
    Bleed
    Disarm
    Parry/evade
    Allright a couple of more that i dont care to list but thats more or less it.

    I have 5 pvp chars ranging from necro/mage fencer/archer and dexxor. the number one reason why kills cant be made is because of lag/speed hacks you get these poeple that take one hit and take off heal and then come back makes it hard as heck to keep em in the same place i have on many occasions fought someone and it just become comical on them running and healing and coming back. archer lets u dismount and ranged attacks. the use of pots doesnt help matters. speed hacks dont make u run in straight line fast some claim they delete lag but the truthful i wouldnt know but i do know that they cut the time off of turning instead being like 2 moves it combines it into one therefore making you faster. in my experience of flaging people for hacks the gms dont care so go load up on pot throwers speed hacks medic(auto cures and heals you) and have a blast hitting about 2 buttons to kill people. personally i think this is horse sh*T but hey doesnt seem like the gm going to do anything about it anytime soon.     I dont know what templates you guys are playing on your dexxers...But its not very hard to kill anyone with a dexxer. If its another dexxer you simply disarm. Mage, you can bleed em and disarm that mage wep. Sure some run away, but other's don't even realize they've been disarmed. That's when you start with your nasty combo's. Lots of good combo's out there if you take the time to experiment with em.

    Bokuto with lightning

    Nerve strike - around 35-45 damage with lightning proc
    Lightning strike - 15-35 (not including lightning proc)
    another lightning strike 15-35 (not including lightning proc)
    Death strike - minimum 40 damage if they run.
    poison dart to screw up healing
    Conflag pot/another nerve strike if they dont run - 3-6 damage per second with 35 more damage from nerve strike

    If they are not running for there lives (hell even if they are running) toss a few explosion pots at em!!

    Obviously I wouldn't have started this thread if I agreed with A Rev. From what I see there are far fewer dexxers on Cats than there were three years ago when I left, and even far fewer successful ones. I can think of one dexxer off the top of my head that is truly feared. There simply is no comparison to the way things were three years ago. And when I talk to people about playing dexxers in game, most of them tell me it isn't worth it.

    I have no problem killing people with my dexxer, when I can close with them. But I rarely am able to close with anyone, and I certainly can never catch up to them. They don't move any faster than I do, but I can't close in on them to make the kill. They get down to half health, and start running and I can't make the kill. I played a dexxer three years ago as well, and I don't recall it being so hard to close with anyone.

    Maybe I'm just getting old and my reflexes are shot...

    @ Rev - 35 dmg cap applies to armor ignore only. I've hit for regular hits on my necro LJ for > 35 and crushing blow for 60+.

    @ Zidjin - I tested omen before crushing on my LJ, it does not increase damage.

    I did say in my next post that it was for specials not for regular hits. Didnt know it crushing blow wasn't capped. Although it makes sense being a %of the regular hit added as direct damage.

    @llewen - The reason you dont see any dexxers on cats is because there all ***** stealthers, so of course you dont see them, biggest reason i left the shard.
