I have been wondering this for a while. Some people that unfortunately work third shift in real life can't make it to the normal scheduled events. Is there any chance down the road that there will be events hosted around in the morning time or early afternoon (before 5pm)?

Have you tried servers in different time zones?

On weekends perhaps but that is the problem with events, there is never a perfect time to host one that everyone can attend only a time that can usually work best for a majority. The other thing is EMs work too, I doubt this is their only job.

Your other option might be to try and talk to the EM and ask them personally.

I agree, we know they aren't gonna change for a few people. My best advice is to find a shard that has their events while you are home and make a char or xfer a char there that can hold its own to get drops.... hehe... I play on Pacific and I'm in EST time zone so all the events are 11pm for me lol... its not impossible but its frustrating on those nights after work when I'm so exhausted and I gotta wait till 11 to show up at an event hehe...

I think i'd be looking at a japanese shard if I had to do that because they are what, like 12 hours ahead or behind us in the east coast? Well wait, even a japanese shard I coudlnt make it to. 3p here would be like 5am there lol.

Japanese shard events are usually at around 8am-9am EST. Also you get about as many people there as you do an Atlantic event.

Drachenfels usually always has their events on Sundays, and those fall at 2:30pm EST. Also Europa should also be in the afternoon time.

EDIT* I just want to add, I used to work 3pm - 11pm - And ill be honest, there isnt that many options out there. Try Emailing your shards EM's, as I have seen them try to throw in a couple afternoon events here and there.

Wow thank you so much Promathia! I think i'll check into Drachenfels for SURE and maybe the japanese shards. I had no idea so many people played there (on japanese shards). Sunday would be a great time for me since I work 60 hours a week on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift (Tues-Sat 10:30pm-7am) Mondays 10am-5:30pm, Tuesdays-Thursdays 1pm-5:30pm. On top of that I'm taking online classes for school. I don't work at all on Sundays though, so that is probly my best time.

Also, Drach translates everything they say from German to English. You wont have that on the Asain shards tho.

Wow I didn't even know they spoke german on drachenfels lol... I thought it was another I guess "English speaking American" shard.

I think the servers should be closed between 12am and 6am on their respected timezones, no need for them to be open. Korea runs a similar strategy with their gaming.

And what do you do about Siege that has players from all over the world? What about players who work 2nd shift? Personally - I know lots of people that play between 12am and 6am regularly. Would this encourage them to close accounts and leave? If so - that's a bad idea all around.

Isn't the closure just for minors?

Mervyn, I think the curfew only applies to minors. Do you know otherwise?

I saw this article from the United Press that says a lot of the critics of the law think it's been ineffective: Gaming 'curfew' in S. Korea ineffective - UPI.com.

    Interesting stuff.

I guess you have never seen the age polls on UHall? 18 and under are a very small minority of players.

Of course if memory serves at one time the TOS said to play you had to be over 18. Of course I can't remember for sure and I sure played before I was 18. Of course if my server went down that much I would leave the game. No way I am paying for something that I can't use, and my work schedule often is like that.

no tazar, that means that the average age of people not banned on stratics or reads stratics and joins in dumb surveys have put as an answer that they are over 18, it doesn't mean anything.

That's ok, for every one person that leaves, more would join as it would make the game better

I strongly doubt it. As most people that play UO are older. While your guild might be young on my shard most of the players are over 25. I would say our senior contingent is even older. Of course there is no reason to shut down the games but it would be a good idea to limit the accounts of those under 18 to maybe an hour a night. That way there would be no way for them to fall behind in school.

Ok... you don't like Polls... how about a sampling? Of the 600+ Ultima Players that I have on ICQ - about 5 are under 18 - and 2 of them are my family members. Spend a little time in game talking to people and you'll quickly realize there are very few children playing.

Since the opening post concerns someone who plays at odd hours because of shift work, posting in this particular thread that you'd like the shards closed during hours when they might wish to play is somewhat ironic.

Not really, i'd say that the original poster would be trying to benefit at the expense of others, so the minority of people who play out of peak time (that is why it's called PEAK time because the majority of players play at that time) could obtain items when there's little or no competition.

Omg, he is asking for afternoon events because he is at work at night. How does suggesting that they shut the servers down *when he is at work* have anything to do with it?

I do not have any problem with a few off hour EM events for those people who cannot make the ones normally scheduled.

Of course, I also realize that EMs have their own RL schedules and these may preclude them being available to host the alternate time events, so it may not be possible to do.

Maybe EA could give enough money for one full time EM that could rotate shards and provide some off hour events for those on odd schedules? They could also help with customer service some. Basically a Mesanna Jr. which can't hurt seeing as how much Mesanna does.

It just makes sense to hold events during the times when most people can play. Judging by perusing the forums periodically, EM events are held at all different days at all different times. Centrally-run events have on occasion been held during off-peak times, with the result being that people complain they cannot be gotten to. Contrary to what someone implied in this very thread, nothing prevents one from coming to an event save for one's own schedule and play preferences. EM events used to be held at odd times more often, during the first run of the program, with the result being that people complained they couldn't be gotten to. So, yeah.

It doesn't, but it means that people are doing spawns at night when Mervyn isn't around and he is continuing his long term whine about it. Afterall, people should ONLY be allowed to play during his preferred time and his preferred template.

so the majority of people play outside of peak time? That is the equivalent of saying the minority of people are the majority. play whatever template you like, just don't do it at 3.00am when you know your competition has school in the morning.

The point people are making, that you are clearly failing to grasp, is that many people play at many different hours. You're going to tell a PAYING subscriber who works odd hours but is available late night to play that he can't play his "local" shard, because it's closed, so they need to play 6 time zones away, with horrible ping, in order to meet their needs? Really? I don't think so.

The needs of the many outweigh those of the few. That's like saying we should only have 3 buttons in the game as some paying players only have one hand.

My last post, since I'm unfortunately feeding the trolls. What "needs" of what "many"? You are they only one asking for a shard closure. Clearly you are not the "many". Why does it matter if some folks want to, or need to, play late night. If you're in bed because you have class, why do you care if they play? Are they affecting your sleep?
