You know, it's interesting, I think that Virginia has, for many years, always elected a governor from the opposite party as the president. I was more surprised about the win in NJ.

Why are all of you so Un-American? Political Parties are the bane of Democracy.....

See Democracy is a political system that draws power from the people.

Political Parties don't represent "The People" they represent "These People" but not "Those People". They have a self serving Agenda, when 90%+ of Congress votes along party lines over 80% of the time you can pretty well bet the interest of "The People" meaning the entire population of the country isn't at heart on the issues.

    Well?

  8. What a freaking joke?

Because I side with my views and not Obamas, I am a racist?

Heres the deal, If you decide to read it MIGHT be to long for your lib views.

He is exactly what you can expect when you elect a college lecturer who never had a real private sector job in his life.

He sees government, so long as he is leading it, as the central source for growth in the country. He believes government, so long as he is leading it, is the answer to all of our problems.

He is the summation of everything that has been wrong with the United States education system since the early 20th century. He stands for the minimization of individual liberty and the maximization of federal power over every individual in the country. He does not respect the individual's rights to life, liberty, and private property under Natural Law as the founders envisioned for the US. The founders followed philosophies of individual freedom and sought to limit the government to only those activities that were absolutely necessary in order to preserve the principles of freedom described by philosophers like John Locke. Obama prefers philosophers like Marx who advocate state planning to rein in the excesses of a free society. In the end, government can only succeed in reining in prosperity.

The founders recognized that government cannot expand without encroaching on the freedom of individual citizens. They knew that government was an inherent threat to freedom, not the benevolent protector Obama believes it to be.

Obama buys into the ideas of Keynesian Economics that were the reason why the Depression lasted as long as it did and are the reason why we are in the economic situation we are in today.

The founders framed the Constitution to limit government with "negative rights." Obama thinks that the government should be given "positive rights" to, as a matter of law, violate the rights of one group to provide for another. We used to call that slavery in this country. Today, it is referred to as "Progressive."

All that being said, he's probably a nice enough guy. My differences of opinion with him are philosophical, historical, economic, and reasoned. I'm not necessarily questioning his intentions. He really does think the collective is more important than the individual and that favoring the collective over the individual is good for society. I argue that every example of central planning from the USSR to your local Department of Motor Vehicles has proven that philosophy a dismal failure. He thinks it will work if HE tries it. History has proven that when the individual is permitted to pursue their own self interest, the collective is served as the only way to freely advance one's own interests in a free society is to provide for the freely determined wants of other individuals.

Ultimately there is little common ground between us. Contrary to the rhetoric from many on the left, it has everything to do with policy and nothing to do with race.

I hope you get my drift. Race is NOT The issue, The issue is being to far LEFT and to far RIGHT which I Admit is a problem. But I wish to GOP had the BALLS to be as for Right and the libs are left.

Well, I agree with the substance of your note: I don't feel that we are well represented by our politicians - not liberals, not conservatives, not libertarians, not anyone.

Now then, I get to be anal about the answer to the question, lol (I'm a grad student at Johns Hopkins studying political philosophy...so I'm training to be an expert at complaining about the government :)). The *anal* answer to the question is that America is not a direct democracy, but a democratic republic. Our system operates like a republic - ruled by representatives, including our senators and congressmen - but unlike in a pure republic, our representatives are democratically elected. Hence, democratic republic.

Here's the funny part: Plato warned that the danger of a democracy was mass-dumbness and the danger of a republic was oligarchy (i.e., representatives don't rule because they are the wisest/most virtuous, but because they have the most money). By building a democratic republic, we've managed to fall into both weaknesses. :D

That said . . . I still like our particular form of government. I just wish folks were still elected because they were the best/wisest/most virtuous, and not because they have enough money to out-campaign everyone else. :(

Oh I agree with what you are saying, and I firmly believe that our countries decline started in 1786 when Alexander Hamilton founded the first political party. While it wasn't so much a direct nose dive it opened he doors for political corruption. Now the intention originally was obvious, exactly what you said about the wisest/most virtuous holding places in office. That was the belief of the founding fathers they held the ideals of Free Thought, and Free Expression as paramount. Alex on the other hand when the Constitution was being drafted by the Philadelphia Convention, proposed a system of government directly based off of that of England.

This plan was rejected entirely, and had little to no influence on the end result that was signed in 1787. Now by this time he had already formed the Federalist Party, and started things in motion. He had created an organization, which had values, ideals, and an agenda. The same holds true for all members of political parties today and their sects. These people are no longer loyal to America, they are loyal to their parties and should be strung up each and every one for treason. They have abandoned their loyalty to their nation and it's people (the source of power for it's Government) in favor of Loyalty to an ideals structure formed by their political party, they no longer serve the electors, they serve themselves.

And you are likely a racist as well.

  17. Again just because I dont agree with someones Views, how am I a racist?

Because I dont my country turning into a SOCIALIST nation? Read a little Aran, Just a little.... Take it in understand that the world is not owed to you.

Simple here are some steps (The 9 Principles of America) Accept them...

    1. America Is Good.

    2. I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life.
-God “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.” from George Washington’s first Inaugural address.

    3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday.
-Honesty “I hope that I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider to be the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” George Washington

    4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government.
-Marriage/Family “It is in the love of one’s family only that heartfelt happiness is known. By a law of our nature, we cannot be happy without the endearing connections of a family.” Thomas Jefferson

    5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.
-Justice “I deem one of the essential principles of our government… equal and exact justice to all men of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political.” Thomas Jefferson

    6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results.
-Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness “Everyone has a natural right to choose that vocation in life which he thinks most likely to give him comfortable subsistence.” Thomas Jefferson

    7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.
-Charity “It is not everyone who asketh that deserveth charity; all however, are worth of the inquiry or the deserving may suffer.” George Washington

    8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion.
-On your right to disagree “In a free and republican government, you cannot restrain the voice of the multitude; every man will speak as he thinks, or more properly without thinking.” George Washington

    9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.
-Who works for whom? “I consider the people who constitute a society or a nation as the source of all authority in that nation.” Thomas Jefferson

This is debatable. While I like my country because of "most" of the freedoms it allows. It definitely is far from great and is falling behind day by day, not because of government but because of its people.

Religion is a personal decision, not meant to be forced on anyone (and I mean anyone). America was not and is not meant to have a main religion. If anything our government need to be atheist lol.

It is hard to be honest in our time when we are fed so much bull crap from ALL sides.

Authority on what? Is this a reference to your kids?

I think the fact that money determines your outcome in the justice system says enough about it. Meaning if you are rich, you can afford the best attorney's. Yet, sometimes they unfairly make examples of the rich and famous.... this is FAR from blind.

    Except gays apparently.

I agree, you should not force someone to be "good" as it will likely have the opposite affect.

Totally agree, in fact dissent is probably true patriotism.... well except when it comes to our children, when they disagree with their authority then they get punished or detention...... :coco:

    Agreed.

Those are not the principles of America, at least not anymore. Our political leaders have abandoned most, you can't hold on completely to the ideals of dead men, be they great leaders and thinkers or not. The system has to evolve along with the times while keeping core principles in tact, those are not core principles. The Core Principles of America are written on 2 documents, The Deceleration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution.

Honestly I don't think there is much in the way of True Patriotism left in the US.

There hasn't been a real threat to the Nation since oh, the 1860's.

The Founding Fathers and the soldiers that fought in the Revolution risked execution for their beliefs, and death fighting for them.

Their children fought the War of 1812 to prove the country had the right to even exist.

These peoples Children and Grand Children fought on both sides of the Civil War on their beliefs based on what the Founding Fathers had written.

Pearl Harbor was the closest we've really come since, with the exception of 9/11 but neither put the entire underlying structure of our country at risk. Everything else was fought on foreign soil.

The Soldiers in Iraq, and Afghanistan? They are soldiers, and they face death every day. But they are not acting as patriots, they are not preserving our country by overthrowing, or altering the government of another.

In 2004, I spent three months living on bread and broth, in an open-air shelter, in one of the more dangerous neighborhoods in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where I worked feeding, clothing, and caring for Ethiopian street people.

In 2002, my wife spent two months living in a tent in the bush in Botswana teaching tribal people about good health practices.

Currently, my father-in-law is in South Africa comforting a close family friend whose husband, also a life-long friend of my family's, died two days ago from malaria while working in a South African feeding center.

    What have you done lately?

  24. Nexus I understand that "9 principles of america" are not the "standard" for us. But If we were to use those as a guide, in life we would be WAY better off.

By the way those are done by the 9/12 project (search it if not)

The problem with Iraq was it was quite literally bull****. We went in because terrorists from Afghanistan attacked us.... besides, like you said, we are not defending are country but attacking others, kinda like Cuba and the Philippines. Also, if someone wants to use the, "we are helping them" argument, then we should also be invading MANY other countries to "help" them.

My point about children, was more literal. People talk about strength, independence, and resisting authority and the government, but when it comes to children they get angry if the kids want to do something else, or believe in a different belief.
