I spent 10 1/2 hours at the Sea Market yesterday to collect 9300 saltpeter at the restock once per hour vendors, and then spent 6 hours this morning going through all the crafting steps to make the supplies to fire 200 heavy cannon shots and 200 light cannon shots. Anyone think this is more than slightly asinine to have players go through to shoot cannons on a ship?

Now I understand why Cal went after scriptors just before the booster release. Everyone who wanted to shoot the cannons on thier ships would be downloading illegal script programs today after going through the crafting process manually just once.

On average, how many shots to you use during a battle with an NPC pirate ship?

Haven't fought one yet, just mounted the cannons and fired one a few times an hour ago. Could be a few shots, could be several dozen <shrug>

I've not even tried to do so yet; I spent nearly an hour making Light and Heavy cannon and 100 of the 4 ammo types for someone yesterday, in exchange for a SoA in Alchemy; I've since spent about 6 hours watching a new alchemist go from 50 to now 90 Alchemy just so I can at least complete all the steps for firing my own cannons... but I've yet to even attempt to buy the Saltpeitre I know I'll need.

I've been told that the firing of the cannons themselves are, with practice, easy to adapt too. One day later this week, when I've mined myself the 1800 iron per cannon I may get to learn for myself!

I bet in a few days it will be easy to figure out a more effective way to do the process.

Outch, did not know that you needed that many.
Mesana better makes vendors that sell 20 times salpeter to make the salpeter limitation less of a problem

That's 1800 ingots to repair the cannons on a normal shard - I can only imagine what it will be on Siege/Mungen. *shudders*

IT is not asinine! IMBUING SCREWED smiths and crafters. THis gives us something to make and sell on our vendors again other than PoF.

I like it. The process of actually firing cannons isnt that hard or time consuming to do once you get used to it.

But as far as crafting the things goes, leave it like it is!

I do agree though saltpeter needs to be more readily available, this is just freaking nutz trying to obtain this stuff on GL. 24 hours and ive only gotton a tiny bit to my name (enough to fire ten cannons once)

There is probably a break in communication between levels of design, development, implementation, and testing. A lot of things in UO seem to have gone through these phases without feedback passing to each level to facilitate refining of the systems.

Edit: It's basically the same developer mentality which made macroing of skills so popular.
Edit again: Their design cycle seems more linear than hermeneutic!!

Tell us how much time you need to SPEND those 400 cannonballs now, instead of whining against something just for the principle.
That might be constructive and even give an idea to devs to adjust it. Without that, this thread is a pure fail.

1800 ingots just to repair a cannon?

This is looking more and more like something I'll never do. The overhead is just insane.

It's 1800 ingots to make a heavy cannon. I haven't actually fired or had to repair one yet, but I read somewhere on these forums that "slightly damaged" took about 36 ingots to repair.

While I don't like how hard it is to get saltpeter, I think the rest of the expansion is fairly well descriptive of the effort it takes to operate and maintain a fighting ship. It has also made crafters highly desirable and much more relevant than I have seen since about 2002.

MAKE SALTPETER EASIER TO GET AND THIS EXPANSION WILL BE THE BOMB!!

Why would you make so many supplies prior to knowing how they are used and then complain about the time it took? Those 400 shots will probably get you through 25 battles. If you thought it took long to craft them, go capture a boat and see how long that takes.

The only problem I've had is obtaining saltpeter, and that was only minor. I was able to get 3000 on LS fairly painlessly.

My privateer took his first prize last night after clearing the deck with arrow fire. I didn't count the shots, but I believe it was about 15 or 16 from heavy guns to scuttle the boat. His ship was only slightly damaged in the exchange and the looted material and cargo he obtained was worth the effort.

The current system has made materials and craftsmen valuable again.

  14. Finally something that is difficult and worthy.

I like how it is. We shouldnt get everything in 15 seconds.

That being said. I think saltpeter should also be craftable in some limited way.

But I like how it is.

It should take combined effore to get ship ready. Should even take days to supply a ship and get it battle ready.

    NO MORE CANDY CRAP.

    Woohoo.

Slight date correction. We being relevent always untill imbuing. So it made us slightly relevent again since imbuing.

I had planned on vending the cannon supplies. The time involved is to much of a fun killer to do that. I'll make it for myself and a few others,

Have you gone through the process of waiting on the saltpeter vendors and gone through all the steps to make everything?

My smith/tailor's products were not worth anything until Imbueing came along. Now together, my smith/tailor & imbuer can make products people want.

Imbueing didn't affect most crafts at all. I take it you never trained up an imbuer because you clearly are not speaking from experience.

You're the one who choose to spend 16 hours doing that. Of course it's fun killer. Like 16 hours of mining to fill BODs. What did you expect?
You're going to sell those cannonballs a fortune, and your time will be worth it (or not, you decide). If you spend 16 hours creating the resource to play for 2 months, what's the problem. The number 400 isn't big enough? You're adult, you know it's just a number. If it's enough to last long, if it's a pain to do, you'll sell that very expensive. If the busniess doesn't interrest you, it's your problem. Make money in another way.

The system of aquiring saltpeter is a sad joke that is singlehandedly bringing down this expansion.

Warning: **DO NOT BUY*** HIGH SEAS until they correct this idiotic flaw. You WILL regret the desicion if you do.

Runics all smith crafted and tailer crafter items with runics was seallable even the worst ones. Before runics during the time you mention it was just GM items which like imbuing it was generic the same no difference and seallable was debatable.

Imbuing ruined it cause it doesn't take dedicated craft players to make them and put time. All peices are pretty much the same no random properties or combination to make best items with player crafters making a personal touch on each. Any player can make close to the perfect suit in moments and play the rest of the game doing something else while Crafters spend most of the game crafting and only a little bit of time doing other things. So crafters are not needed after imbuing for people needs. There is still some players that ask for a imbuer but these players most of the time bring there own materials and forget who the imbuer was who made this fine suit as it doesn't matter if a great crafter of the shard did it or another generic one did.

Anyway thats how many of us see it. Those of us who embraced the age after item properties which made us more diverse on our offerings.

I too would like to know how many cannon shots on average are used in a battle, either to sink the npc pirates, or the merchants.

Can someone look up "hermeneutic" in the online dictionary? My computer is not protected from viruses and spyware, so I avoid the site. Webster's New World Dictionary lists hermaphrodite followed by hermes. Hermeneutic should be right between there.

Its not really that bad though it certainly could be better. There are 3 alchemists on LS and I've bought 5000 without any camping or waiting. I just check the ones no one is camping when I stop by.
