I stumbled across "their" page tonight and color me impressed! I don't want to start the ancient 3D/Reborn argument, but I did want to point out how much passion some players have for the game to create something like this. Just amazing! It's just too bad I won't ever use it (I only play the official shards).

I am actually glad that UO DIDN'T do something like this.

UO is UO for a reason...it's unique...it's not like every other 3D stupid game out there. It's special...and it needs to stay that way.

I think it's fantastic. I would love to have this option..... Same world we know, just in 3d.

I think it gives off a whole new dimension to the game, even with those basic graphics & textures.

KR should have given you this option to go 'free 3d', not JUST "3d from the top down" .... and if it were an option you could select, it would make both lovers and haters of a full 3d client happy.. but of course, this would probably mean much more development work than the KR client alone has required..

So i'll keep dreaming and realise it would never happen :)

I always have told people UO is the last game I will ever play. However, if EA were to come out with an Ultima Online 2 that started everyone from scratch with these graphics, I would play it.

KR looks like premium studio quality stuff...

    from 5 years ago...

Don't get me wrong, some of the thigns look VERY nice in it, like the evil mage lords. But all of the things in it were made without taking the top view into account which is the reason why most things just end up blurring together.

In a 3d game you don't NEED an outline on things to distinguish them from the landscape.

    in 2d you do.

  17. What makes it so special that it wont be vulnerable to all the cheats and hacks plaguing other MMORPGS AND FPS ? There are so many other successful titles with good companies behind the that cannot solve these problems.

It's all marketing gimick of 'Free to do this and free to do that' . Early UO has already been there and we learned that although refreshing, the role of being the victim sours after some time. How many times did your house get looted ? How many times did you get pked by a hacked character ?

Look at the proposed targeting system of aiming your sword blows and spells... you think there won't be hacks to auto target ? Look at the hacks in WoW that allow players to move through walls , you think you can defend your castles ?

Darkfall promises too much without fleshing out the systems. I have learned that companies or people that promises you everything usually are not focused and in the end fail to deliver a single result. Moreover, its name sounds like FALL - FAIL .

Maybe if you did more research on Darkfall, rather than just looking at a YouTube video and drawing conclusions, you'd learn that Darkfall has multiple programs that blocks illegal programs, similar to PunkBuster. This was taken from the official Darkfall site.
"Multiple safeguards protect you from cheats and exploits that would otherwise interfere with your gaming experience."

Even if someone does manage to hack past the safeguards, Darkfall has actual GMs that are active and respond to pages, thus they'll get caught and banned if they try to cheat consistently or within the presence of other players. Gold Farmers/Resource Scripters? No problem, since there are No Safe Zones and Full Loot in Darkfall, we'll just kill and loot them enough to where it's not profitable enough for them, then call GMs on the Scripters to get them banned after we've looted them.

"Darkfall promises too much without fleshing out the systems."
Why do you think Darkfall has been in production for several years? Because they are delivering on their promises, and now, there are almost done, they're just applying the polish to it. No large corporate company like EA or Blizzard would do this, because they want the quickest amount of cash return possible, they want to shove that game out unfinished and work on it later (Maybe) to make as much money as soon as possible. Corporate Cash Cows.
Aventurine is a small company based in Greece that was started by the Devs of the game, and recieved a large loan from the Bank of Athens to do so. Within the first few months of it being on the market, it's expected to have more subscriber's than UO currently has, so they're gonna get a large cash return REAL quick. It already has HORDES of people waiting for it to come out to buy it, and Aventurine hasn't even started to pubicly advertise it, all the people that are going to play it when it first comes out know about it from word of mouth. It's being hailed as the Messiah of PvP.

Almost all of the Devs are former oldschool UO Players, and hate cheaters just as much as we do. This was also taken from their official website.
"Every single person involved in the production of Darkfall is a gamer first and foremost. We've been where you've been, and we play the games you play.

We are committed to delivering and maintaining a complete, stable, and balanced game; a game that makes good on its promises, with regular and free expansion-size updates, prompt and swift customer service, and superior value for our players.

Darkfall offers you more ways to give feedback, and more ways to collaborate with the Darkfall Team in the evolution of the game. Your voice is heard loud and clear."

You have to know that Darkfall
if you go out of a town has no safe zone and everyone can pk you!!

  21. Guest

    Guest Guest

Yep, not even towns are safe. Don't have to deal with them newbs that say "You suck" then run to the inn to hide. I hated them back in the day, just wanted to whip out my Hally and whack them. We had a specific name for them, but can't say it here on Stratics.

These are taken directly from the official Darkfall website.
    "Will Darkfall have safe zones?
There are no safe zones in Darkfall unless the players themselves create them or seek them out. There is no area where a player cannot be attacked by another player.

There is relative safety in numbers and in staying out of harm's way. A player in a city full of his clanmates and further guarded by NPC guards is as safe as he can be, but he is still vulnerable to a sudden enemy raid. A player who has made a home for himself in a remote area is also relatively safe, but an enemy could always come along. The six racial capitals are very well guarded and will probably be the safest locations on Agon. Someone could still attack you, but he would probably die in the process."

"Is Darkfall a Player vs. Player (PvP) game?
Calling Darkfall a PvP game would be selling it short. Of course there's going to be a lot of PvP combat and the combat gameplay will be as fast paced and fun as a first person shooter, but the focus of the game is kingdom building, clan warfare, and conquest. The battles will be epic and will require a lot more than just PvP skill to be won. Darkfall is as much a social, a real-time strategy, and a fantasy role playing game, as it is a PvP game."

"Will you offer a world without PvP for those of us that do not enjoy it?
We like to think of Darkfall as a game where there are no restrictions to player interaction that don't make sense. The fantasy literature and mythology that inspired fantasy based RPGs contains conflict, combat and warfare and its part of what made these worlds so dramatic, the characters so heroic, and the endings so rewarding. Having said that, we're sorry, but we cannot offer a "softer" version of Darkfall."

"I don't like PvP, why should I even consider trying out Darkfall?
If you give it a chance, you'll discover that Darkfall is an extremely well rounded game. For example, there's as much effort going into the quest engine and the crafting process, as there is going into the combat design. Darkfall features the ultimate player based economy, more useful trade skills than any other released MMORPG to date, advanced NPC and monster AI, and a quest engine constantly creating new and challenging content. Furthermore, the game world is huge; you could move to a remote area with your friends and try to create a safe haven for other like-minded players."

"How are you going to handle Player Killing?
Anyone can attack anyone. In fact Darkfall encourages you to seek out and kill enemies of your race and your clan. However, it is up to each kingdom to set the rules of their borders. The different kingdoms have NPC guards that have orders given to them by the player kings and lords. You can order the guards to attack on sight. The guard hit list can include clan names, individual player names, specific races, alignments, and enemies."

"There are no safe zones in Darkfall. The only protection you can count on is your friends watching your back."

"You have the freedom to follow the rules, or to break them and face the consequences. Darkfall's Alignment system is hard but fair."

The arguments against the non-con PvP in pre-Ren UO basically stand for Darkfall, as well.
Years of study into MMOs has lead us to where we are today, with Darkfall being an anomaly, for having non-con PvP.
I would love for Darkfall to succeed, since its success would greatly push the envelope of MMO design theory. But, familiarity with with the subject makes any optimism I hold guarded, at best.

    Consider these two factors:
1.) Much of the enthusiasm for the game comes from that that desire the non-con PvP environment.
2.) Given equal character skills, a PvP enthusiast will win a fight against a non-PvPer, practically every time.
Without significant mechanics (which would restrict the "freedom" of the game), is there really a place for non-PvPers in the game?

When you post a pic like that and dont resize or crop it... it stretches the view frame for the whole message thread. I've noticed this going on a lot more lately. It is too much to ask that individual posting a pic take a few seconds to properly size it?

  31. *Sigh*

Please.. Stop talking about Darkfall. That game was announced around the same time as UO2 (That is, the first one), and every year, they announce "This year will have beta!"

They say it EVERY DAMN YEAR.. I'll believe it when I see it.

And likely, I won't see it for long, because if you know anything about the rabid ignorance that follows the game with religious zealotry that puts even the most extreme Scientoloists to shame, you know to expect smack talk, tea-bagging, and other Emmy-Award winning behavior within seconds of logging in.

And let's not forget their DEVS, who defy logic when they can't quite understand WHY players doubt the game is ever going to be released after, what, 6 years of slipped release/beta dates, and only allow devoted fanboi sites to even SEE anything of the game since it's inception, aside from the few meager screenshots.

That's IF it comes out. And it will only get WORSE if by some small act of some benevolent force it does get released, because they'll somehow feel vindicated for all their bad behavior, sloppy PR work, and years of delays.

I don't care if the game is the second coming of whatever deity you believe in - With that kind of community who act in that fashion BEFORE the game is even available to TEST, you can keep it.

I'd rather deal with WoW than Darkfall.. THAT'S how bad they can really be.

But after hearing about the game for, what, 6 years, I don't think it's going to come to fruition, and I have my doubts about what the community will be like in it, given what I've already seen of it.

What makes UO isn't the perspective of its game screen, what makes UO is the ability to build a character, house, community, et cetera from scratch without preset notions. I honestly think a UO that learned from the mistakes of other online games, went mega-immersive on development, and built a living, breathing world (which is what UO was to begin with) would be a success. Maybe not a WoW success, but definitely a success.

No, it doesn't look like Crysis or even Oblivion. Then again, it wasn't developed with a multi-million dollar budget. These are folks using their spare time to create something special out of nothing but love and hard work... they're not ever going to make money from it... It wasn't created by the profit machine.

That's what makes it beautiful. Moreso than poly count or texture res could ever matter.

Any one against the last 2 sentences?

    I wholeheartedly agree Belmarduk.

However, it is my opinion that KR as a client cannot deliver on either of those requirements.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    ....yet...hopefully

KR is definatley getting better and better each patch - Only problem sofar (because of a month long pauses) it is going too slowly

Ideally we would have a KR client which has the options of:

    Legacy graphics - done afaik

Legacy userinterface - there is the possibilty to customize it - allthough the KR UI is way better than 2D OR old 3D when you get to know it... in most parts(still needs work though ! )

    Real 3D option - moveable camera ?????

    Then KR would be perfect
There is still artwork in KR I am not thrilled with yet though, but its getting better.

    Greetings Belmarduk

Ultima Iris has been around for quite a while, so this is not new.

I always thought that The Dungeon Siege or Age of Empires3 engine would suit UO better.

No game or system will ever be 100% secure, and those who believe that a gaming service will have NO cheats is only lieing to themselves.

Yes, just like there is on Siege right now. Crafters are VERY valuable to the Siege economy and they will be in Darkfall.

I believe Darkfall will reign supreme as the best MMO for PvP, and the only other one (UO being the other) with a robust persistent state world that allows freedoms you won't find in any other game. There may not be 10 million people lining up to play this kind of game like WoW, but I have a feeling that Darkfall will be much more successful than UO. I also believe that Darkfall's release will impact UO's subscription number far more than any other game to date.

I still love the concept of Darkfall. [IMG]

    Oh, I think it's a FANTASTIC concept.

But after hearing about the game for, what, 6 years, I don't think it's going to come to fruition, and I have my doubts about what the community will be like in it, given what I've already seen of it.

I'd love to see it come out, be great, and inspire a great community. I'd love to eat crow. I just don't think I'm going to.

    [/ QUOTE ]

...because UO's community is soooo great nowadays. 5+ years ago I would have staunchly defended the UO playerbase. Now however, I would get banned if I vented my true feelings about the majority who call Sosaria home.

The net in general has gone to crap.
It doesn't seem to matter what corner you're playing in, there's people who are there to do nothing but try to break up comunities. Paragon Trolls of sorts. (
