Your preferred method of event item distribution

As this seems to be the hot topic of the moment, I'm interested to see what the general consensus is here (keeping in mind of course that U.Hall isn't fully representitive of the playerbase, but it does represent a subsection of more "hardcore" players, such as those who would be closely following the EM event arc)

I voted team shard different because this option wasnt available...

Get this thread locked and start a new with this option availabe.(go both options...shard unique or all the same)

Guarantee it would be the winner (shard unique)

These two combined. The winners get a far better item, and the other groups get something for participating...

Actually there's more options I'd like to add aswell like "different methods of distribution dependent on the context of the event", but it wouldn't let me edit the poll even before anyone had voted :(

To be totally honest the main reason for the poll is to find out what people think of the newly proposed system (Option 1) ;) so if your option isn't listed, just post and specify exactly how you would prefer it.

I remember events in the past that provided semi-rare drops off of mobs that you fought, and extremely rare items (maybe 1 or 2 an event).

The majority of players who participated with regularity found themselves rewarded in two ways. One, they had the experience of actually participating in an event. And two, they usually got a small token item.

Rarely, someone received a truly unique item. In the old days most people placed it in their home or guild house as a symbol of pride. Now, people see a massive gold drop.

To answer your question though, I would like to see items remain rare, and still reward those that make the effort to attend. It's a delicate balance.

By the way, here is one of my most precious items, something I can't lock down or use in game:

    Sorry to be stupid.

But just to be clear, your reference is to the screencap/memory of being part of a great event in UO history and/or being on-screen with one of the Great Evils of UO?

If so I definitely can relate. I wasn't at that event (I was a relatively new player and all I really knew was that it was death to go too close to Trinsic), but I've been at a lot of them since.

But that isn't fair to everyone else.

Ya. I was there for the invasions of Vesper, Trinsic and Britain when they occured. Tons of death and tons of people. I played Chessy back then. The sight of 30+ people in guild colors, lines of archers and total mayhem was amazing. No one really was looking for an item. In fact, I don't think any dropped. But to stand against those monsters was the coolest. Btw, Juo'nar three shot me.

I would rather have a couple rarer rewards that are randomly handed out and then also have it where the EM's can hand out 20-30 smaller items like shirts, sashes, cloaks, ect. with no mods other than maybe the name of the event or a title for participating. By making the rare a random drop your not rewarding just the power player that does max damage (encouraging more people to participate), and your also removing the problem of past events where people were claiming that on some shards the EMs were handing out the rares to friends and guildmates. I also don't like events where the first one to finish wins and the same event with the same items/goals are on all the other shards but at different times.

  16. Jeeze, people...what is it with you and items?

An event should be an entertaining story that can be shared with the community - a little thought-provoking sliver of reintroduced roleplaying - and fun.

Personally, I am disappointed and put off by players who seek to turn every event into some sort of live eBay frenzy. THAT is why I no longer participate, not because I don't get items. Greedy players have aught to do with roleplaying in my world...and they are most assuredly no fun to be around. Ever. *sigh*

Thanks for ruining it for the rest of us, guys!

I'd want to see "Items are given to many players, rewarding skill/teamwork/ingenuity (each shard different items)" AND "One or two items given to winners only (each shard different items)"(with a few lower rewards sometimes being given toa few others) AND "Everyone attending gets an item. Each shard has it’s own items" OR sometimes no items at all, only with one of them chosen at the discretion of the hosting EMs and dependant on the type of event that's being held I DON'T want to see them stuck to a single reweard type, I want to see them able to make their OWN decisions based on what is going on.. obviously with the proposed changes that damned well won't be able to happen EVER.

So I can't really vote in a poll that forces you to make ONE choice, because ONE choice for ALL situations NEVER works. Kinda sad that "one choice for all situations" is what the devs have decided on, eh?

Personally I'd have a great deal of respect for an EM team strong enough to say there will be no more items, and the events will be purely for the benefit of those who enjoy them.

Please don't misinterpret any of my rants here, I think event items already cheapen the EM system, and attract the wrong crowd, but this new system takes it to another level - imo.

Sorry Dor, but Im going to have to disagree on this one. I like the items. I like playing and participating, and I love helping others achieve... but Im a collector, thats my playstyle... I like to have a token or souvenir to show off and remember. People collect all kinds of things IRL, from baseball cards to thimbles. Why am I "greedy" if I want to collect a souvenir from a memorable event in UO? Sure some people will sell them... so what? There seem to be a lot of people complaining about items at events lately. This is the most juvenile attitude I have encountered. "I dont like it, so nobody should get it". Come on, grow up. If you dont like the items, dont take one. If you dont like the sale of event items, dont buy or sell them. But please, lets stop insisting that other playstyles get nerfed just because you dont like what some people do with THEIR items. Their sale of items does not affect you in ANY negative way. You can still participate in the event, and if you truly are only concerned with the event, then this will only help as it attracts more people and tougher competition.

You dont see me complaining that rollplaying is stupid, and that nobody should be allowed to rollplay because I like colleting things, adn I think that having a complete, well organized and displayed collection of items is a superior way to play this game. Let me collect, and Ill let you pretend to be a little cartoon pixel character. That way we are all happy.

(sorry Dor, this was not all directed at you personally, Im jut frustrated with this attitude that items are evil, and I had to get it out)

My preferred method is the Event Moderator does exactly what they want to do in terms of rewards. Not have some official policy in place which restricts their creative freedom.

Of course they shouldn't be handing out over-powered items. There can be a policy on that.

Rocklin, I still talk about the fall of Trinsic and a group of us raining blows on Juo'Nar with silver swords and barely hurting him. That battle was epic. Magincia had moments that were similar to me, though the rubble-gathering might have broke the fiction a little:

"Horrible Dark Father, I strike at thee!...Oooo...a rubble coconut tree...Nevermind."

On LS, the event had a similar issue with the prizes:

"We have done this horrible act and left orphan baby gargoyles. Hmn...what to do...anyone got a sewing kit so we can sew the beast into some robes?"

It is frustrating that any event/game-system/place-to-explore is reduced into what can be carried off.

How about "all of the above"?

The presence of items at events should not be dictated by the need to hand out rewards to players. It should be used to go along with and improve on the storyline when needed. And the distribution method should be chosen accordingly.

    Example:

    - The event is an induction in the Royal Britannian Guard - everybody gets an identical sash.
    - The event is a foot race from Trinsic to Britain - the first three win a gold, silver and bronze medal.
    - The event involves crafting or retrieving a magical artifact that is used to channel mystical energy against the enemy - whoever creates or finds the artifact gets to keep it after it is used successfully, the others get nothing (or are left with some failed/cracked/broken copies of the artifact).
    - The event involves killing a giant bloated version of Chief Paroxysmus who blows up when killed - anyone who is quick enough can pick up a scoop of putrid slime from the ground.
    - The event involves organizing a defense for the gargoyles in Ilshenar - the players get no items in return, but the gargoyles send out emissaries to sell Masonry and Glassblowing books in the city of Minoc for the benefit of the local artisans.

I would only put restrictions on the properties of items handed out at events: they should be decorative, or based on the stats of existing spawning items (Artifacts, Replicas, Peerless drops, and so on).

My personal choice... (not in those above). This applies to events that are not "games of skill or knowledge" that would have a set winner (quiz shows, PvP tournaments, etc.)

    1. EM sets up a yellow "Quest Giver" NPC, with a quest chain for the event.
    2. All persons who want to take part in event can take the quest. This will also allow a person to start the quest on their own, if a late arrival and the EM has already departed.
    3. All persons completing the quest chain get the standard item for that event.
    4. Only persons completing quest chain and present at the wrap-up are eligible for the special items. These could be given out separately, or the Quest-giver give them as random drops (like the selection process for the Thread quests, except weighted for one item most of the time).
    5. This method also enables the EM to set long-term quest chains in motion. The EM can start the event, let it run (with the NPCs doing the record keeping) until a later event date (or dates), and have the special rewards possible at the end events (allowing people who can't attend 1 of the wrap-ups, to attend another - but only eligible to get a prize once).

    How does that sound?

Well we have champ spawn, slime hunter, and community collection (ie library contributor) titles, so why don't they have it where winners get a EM Event Title. If your char wins multiple events then they can select which if any title they wish to have displayed and all the other titles would be listed in a special section of the chars profile.

Everyone else that participated gets a minor trinket. Maybe have it like the Treasures of Tokuno in that you can trade-in X number these trinkets for else such as a house plaque/banner proclaming your participation in EM events.

Doesn't even have to be something new but for the EM to have the power to give an item new/other artwork and titled from the event. "I won!" here take my Spirit of the Totem and make it look like an orcish helm or a tricorne hat. Piates rule. Nothing new and overpowering is added to the game.

If it is a huge fighting event and the EM is there noticing a player that is healing and rezing missing the chance to be in the fray. See it at the Ish champs from players more a team player and not the Me ME ME ME type. Could have an Arcane Robe that is white with the design on it in red. Like a player riding a Polar Bear stands out as a vetern player........A medic robe player would stand out for their playstyle.

To me theese EM events are to instill the RPG back into UO. Nothing should stop the EMs from stealthing about the game where players are active. Observing and rewarding players fror their game play and not a played gamer. EM could go about like the wolf in sheeps desguise as a new player or returning player and rewarding the rare random act of kindness from a veteran player. Just go to Luna and see how long it takes just to get a blue beetle or get someone to take the time to show where the bee keeper is in Ish to do Friend of the Library quest. Just the help me get to my body plz. The way an active sneaky inventive EM change player activity an active GM would do the same.

An event should never run like a rockstar on a stage tossing T-shirts and frisbee into the crowd.

I'd like to see some combination of the above as well...

I think everyone participating in the event should get a small trinket of some sort that follows along with the theme or the holiday the event comemorates - for example, a re-hued or re-named plate of cookies or a pink muffin or something like that for Valentine's Day. Its just nice to have something to look at that reminds you of the time you and your friends got together and did something different. I think it would also much increase participation in events - you get something for your time spent rather than the memory of "I lost again."

I also think that there should be prizes rewarding people who solve the puzzle first or are the first 3 to win the race (or whatever the event is). These prizes should be given out the way they are now.

And, all events prizes (big or small) should be shard specific.

  33. I'd personally rather see event 'rewards' be something that affect the shard. Statues built in recognition of winners for all to see rather than an obscure item that no one will ever see outside a select few. A hall of heroes, where statues of players forever live on with a description of their feat with the competitive events, for all to see and enjoy. Perhaps these statues can give players a once a day buff visiting.

Events to promote community building could result in rewards improving the look and functionality of the shard, creating bridges, tunnels, gardens, fortifications, new buildings, etc.

These things would be for all to enjoy and also permanently show those that changed the shard for the course of existance, rather than just items.

I suppose if the item route is the only way to go, at least allow the rest of the shard to acquire replicas through the museum or a prominent NPC.

I've always wished that UO had a system implemented to reward the 'Healer' type characters. I really enjoy filling a supporting role...as much or more fun than being on the 'front lines', at least to me.

In general, for PvM events, I would say 3 or 4.

I received an RBG sash at a PvM event where I did nothing but spam greater heal/cure/resurrect on the tanking warriors.

I didn't do enough damage to get looting rights, so it could be said that I didn't "win" the event, and didn't deserve a reward. However, without players like myself and the disco/peacing bards, the tanks would not have been able to kill the target. I regard my sash as a reward for doing my bit for the community in general.

That said, I have no problem with the top damage-dealer getting something a bit special.

PvP, footrace, and treasure hunt events are a different matter... there are clear winners and losers.

Let the winners, (or first three), have their unique reward, but all attendees get a shirt that says "I'm not very good at PvP/running/treasure-hunting"

(To be honest, as long as reward items are completely without properties, I don't really care on what basis they are distributed.)

Event rewards should be distributed by cannon. That way every one of the losers has a shot at collecting the arms, legs, head, or torso of the winner.

I like how the GL GM bought everyone some alcoholic refreshment after the event. Even though the item isn't labeled as an event item it is my event souvenir.

I voted no items. It's an item based game but the items really do detract from the fun of the events. I think item rewards should be for scenarios and other pre programmed deals which people can do on their own time. Events should be about the storyline and RP, and removing items from them will mean the attending crowd is going to be there for the story and not there to spam "i want a sash!" every minute.

Have items like sashes with nightsite or recall or invis or create food or whatever for those that complete the event but didn't win. Those items would be date titled. That way they are deleted before the next event. Those that want to show support by showing up can do so and keep returning. The earings already have the code to be DCed to do something. Was real usefull for a fighter to have something that allowed them to cast teleport back in the day.

To make the random generator for theese temp. rewards could be token generating their spell generator. Anyone possesing one of theese event item without a date or past date can be burned. If they can put a timer on Peerless quest items then same could be done for theese rewards. Be the easiest way to do it. Sure someone can tell them how many seconds are in 30 days.

EA seems to be hot for giving out special items. A big problem with this is it gives an advantage to folks who were on the shard for the events or special give away that can never be recovered from. ie, PBD, Dread War Horses, rare overpowered items of all kinds. I put in this grouping the uber faction junk that one has to be in faction to get and can be used against anyone.

This puts newer players at a disadvantage that they can't recover from.

Event items needn't (many would argue shouldn't) give any advantages whatsoever.

A robe or sash doesn't need to have +5 this and 10% that to be deemed "special" or valuable - unless there are going to be thousands of them of course..

I didnt post a reply becouse none of the choices fit what i felt. I believe a avarage amount of items shoudl be handed out that are unique to the shard and event. However that being said if the items are going to have mods they should be diffrent versions of items that already exist (a pirate hat with mods of a HOM for example) or should be added to the replica list of drops.

NO item with mods that are Unique should become unatanable by other players giving that one player an advantage noone else can compair with

As far as decorotive rewards make them whatever you want
