It’s a well-known fact… EVERYONE loves pie. Certainly, the LOTRO developers! Since release, they have added an amazing amount of pie-related content, from the “No Place for Spoiled Pies” deed, to the colourful conversations in the shire regarding the hoarding of pie-fillings, to the title “Pie Eating Champion” from winning the pie eating race at the Fair Grounds outside Bree.
But possibly one of the best pie-related frivolity in LOTRO is the Prized Pie.
This item allows you to “channel” carrying a pie for 1 minute, with a cool down of 10 minutes, as demonstrated by Stratli below. That means 9% of the time – you have pie, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that my friends.
The Prized Pie is the only quest reward from the quest “Which Laid First?”, a level 6 non-combat riddle quest available from Wald Sandson @ 32.0S, 74.3W in the Shire. “Which Laid First?” has no pre-requisite quests (although it itself, is a pre-requisite for the chicken session-play quest series), so it is easily obtained by any character.
Assuming you’re good at solving riddles!
Wald Sandson, you see, has a problem. He ‘borrowed’ some eggs from the nests of his father’s prized hens, to share with his friends down by the river. But when he got there, he realized these were not for snacking – they had chicks in them! As his father has been trying to breed his prize hens for some time, Wald realized he has to put them back. The catch? He doesn’t remember which egg goes to which hen, and the hen will only take the egg with their chick back into the nest!
Fortunately, Wald’s father kept a journal of his beloved chickens, and Wald gives you a page from it giving you the intimate details of what’s been going on with the Real Housewives of Sandson’s Farm. When you accept the quest, the page appears in your inventory, and you can read the following:
“Pimpinella lays eggs before Cineraria
Moonlight lays eggs last
Cineraria lays eggs after Bellflower and
Pimpinella
Bellflower lays eggs after Pimpinella
Telltime lays eggs after Cineraria”
Well, so the intimate details aren’t exactly chronological. That’s where the adventurers of Middle Earth come in, as game developers know MMO Players are crazy about riddles.* If you place the correct egg in the correct basket, quest text will populate your center screen saying “You have placed the <first> egg in the proper nest.” However, if you place the wrong egg in the basket, that incensed hen will roll it right out of the nest and you’ll have to start over. (Which you can do immediately.)
Once the fifth and final egg is in the correct basket, return to Wald and receive your Prized Pie, knowing you have made Middle Earth a much happier (and fatter) place.

*And for MMO Players that are more crazy about Google’ing solutions than solving riddles, the correct order is Pimpinella > Bellflower > Cineraria > Telltime > Moonlight.
