A Note On Oceania

I am a US player, playing on this shard since its inception many, many years ago. I took a hiatus for about 3 years and am just back recently.

I have played with a nasty ping - usually 170+. Yet, for all the years I played UO I functioned just fine with it and I was once one of the top 5 wealthiest players on this shard. I hunted PvM most of the time, top end monsters, farmed their rare goods and made tons of gold. I even jumped in to PvP a little for a few years - not very well for the ping I had - but I had FUN.

Working with 170+ ping... 1/2 that time in the 200's, I see a ton of exageration here and if you need 30-70 ping to play this game and enjoy it, oh well, thats on you. I've had great times with people here on this shard - great times with this game and still do.

Hearing that a 200 ping results in 5 minute log ins and messages, and hearing that the game is unplayable is utter nonsense, that is pure experience speaking from my own play. While its not what you are used to - seriously stop crying and play the game for the reasons for playing the game.

I will say, it is truly sad the route that those in charge at UO took to the level of secrecy that they have deployed in moving the server. I PING AT 23 here in Nevada for Oceania right now. Rest assured the server is in California... because I ping 93 on Atlantic.

As a business manager myself, the deception deployed and no answers to good honest customers is a complete insult to customers and is a horrible business practice. If I ran a company like that, my customers would close my doors with their disdain.

Look at Cal's words quite closely... "Exploring options, waiting to give u concrete answer". What that really means is, "Yes, we moved the server for business reasons and never intended to return it, period. We didn't really know that moving it, with our plan of not having many issues, was going to be a total screw fest for our Aust. customer base.

The only fact is... they arent going to return the server anytime soon until they are absolutely sure that a US based server will not work.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Either tell these folks that their server is coming back or you are trying to figure out how to make it work and screwed up. Easy as that.

ASKING PAYING CUSTOMERS TO CONTINUE PAYING FOR A SERVICE THAT IS BROKEN WITH NO ANSWER IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND IS BAD BUSINESS. I mean seriously?

Is it impossible to take 5 minutes a day to address a "still paying" customer base in the hundreds so hard to do? Daily updates maybe???

    I'm disappointed - period.

I would not be paying 5 accounts subscription 2 months ago if they notice me they would moving the server to US.
What can i do for now? Any suggestion?

I am happy to pay any value if i enjoying it , but not for these situation.

And one more thing ... Thx for the americanSSS CAME TO OUR SHARD AND FARMING POWERSCROLLS !
Trash talking Aussie & Kiwi players while we are all in the bad pings at this situation.

I really feel bad and shame to THESE americans !

170 ping would be a vast improvement on the 260 I am currently getting. There are people here trying to play on 350+. And its not just the ping that is a problem....its the huge amount of lost connections that makes it impossible to play. Go try hunt ANYTHING when your connection drops as soon as you try to tackle anything stronger than the little red hen! I think you will find that grey robes are the rule around here.

After some investigation we’ve come up with a short term solution and are investigating a long term solution for players on Oceania server.

We recognize our messaging could have gone better. In the flurry of messages about the server migration, the specifics about Australia were missed. There will be more details about the upgrades in our video blog we’ll be releasing soon.

In the short term we will be moving players back to the shard in Australia before the end of the week. In addition, Mesanna and the EMs will have some events focused specifically for our Australian players.

Please understand that we will need to address the server issue again in a few weeks. We are working during this time to find a long term solution that will serve all of our needs.

Thanks to those who waited for us to resolve the problem with the facilities. Australia is a tough nut to crack, and we want every gamer in Australia to know UO lives on!

You should see a message on the Herald today.

    Happy Australia Day!

Thank you Cal, we are getting the message that UO lives on, for Oceania. In another 2 days, we are celebrating Oceania's 11th Anniversary Day, 28th January, and this news marks the reborn of Oceania, back into our lives.

And thank you, all Oceanians and Stratics community, for your love and support for Oceania, your effort is finally bear a fruit, and it's all worth-it. Let's this mark our new beginnings, forging a new friendship, and reflect the kindness of Mythic to support Oceania community.

I really wish this can be your long term solution, I couldn't see any other reason or alternatives for Oceania market. Because as Oprah said, it is the end of the yellow brick road, it is a huge remote continent, and Sydney is the traffic hub of internet for Oceania region.

I logged in this morning and thought I was moving a bit too well. Thought I'd check latency and it was 31ms. Naturally I came here and have realised there has been a development. Yippee!

Thanks Cal for a) acknowledging the communication could have been better and b) pre warning us that this will need to be revisited in the future.

Are you in a position to let us know why there seems to be an issue currently? I guess from my perspective (and I will be honest - when it comes to techno mumbo jumbo there is a lot I don't understand) I am having a hard time understanding why the server had to be moved -yet it appears to be quite easy to put it back?

Anyway, thanks for listening to us. Please keep us informed of any developments.

  15. Woohoo!

Back to the packet loss problem that plagued us before christmas but still so glad to be back to a decent ping!!

Definetely a step in the right direction. *Gives James the thumbs up*

I believe he said this a quick fix while they looked for a permanent fix. Perhaps this is not all on the shoulders of EA? Just saying.

well if that's the case then really this is a make or break decision. If it moves again, that'll be it for Oceania no doubt.

My hope is we can stay focused on the positives here and keep communication flowing with Cal and James so that whatever temporary fix you have can lead to a permanent fix that stays positive as well ;)

Man never been so happy to be totally wrong. Cal, please continue to prove us nay Sayers about you wrong.

Now maybe you should offer a free month or two to the Aussie that have left because of this, I know of at least three that closed their accounts last week.

Don't get me wrong I am glad we can play again ...but I am hesitant to get excited because a) they have outwardly said its temporary and b) last time they fixed it within a week we where back to unplayable lag.

Also not sure how many have checked it out but it seems packet loss is still an issue for some people.

  28. Well, we're not out of the woods yet as there are still plans in place to permanently resolve the other issues, hopefully mainly the packet loss many of us experience.

Moon and I suffer greatly from this packet loss on our primus connection however we have a short term fix in the way of two prepaid 3g wireless USB modems, one with Tel$tra and the other with Optus. Traceroutes show that with whatever peering arrangements these companies have they take a different path into equinix and sidestep the router where the packet loss seems to start. An expensive solution but not too bad if it is only short term.

The optus connection provides the best ping but the tel$tra one feels cleaner and less inclined to have short lag freezes. Both ping around 62ms - 90ms depending of course on the percentage of utilization of our local phone tower. Obviously if the local teenagers are not sexting each other it performs better. Even at their best neither connection is in the same league as our primus connection prior to these troubles with its 16ms ping and flawless perfromance.

Hope this might be helpful to anyone else who like us is still not quite out of trouble.

IT'S TIME FOR THE TEAM AT UO TO SHAPE UP AND ADMIT THEY HAVE MADE A GRAVE ERROR OF JUDGMENT AND RETURN OUR SCHARD TO ITS RIGHTFULL PLACE BEFORE WE YOUR CUSTOMERS START VOTING WITH OUR FEET AND LOOK FOR ENTERTAINMENT ELSEWARE !!!!!!!

Great news... thanks to all those who posted and to those in a position to do something for listening and taking some positive action, even if it may only be in the interim. All of us on the Oceania Shard appreciate the time and effort taken to help resolve the issues. Hooray back to 63ms ping again :)

I'm extremely happy with the current Oceania shard, fast latency and no packet loss, and i'm using OPTUS.

I know there are several people who are still having problem with connectivity and packet loss to the shard. This could be due to one of the network path Equinix has, not every lines going the same way (internet is a complex thing).

I'll keep adding/updating the list of traces and packet loss as per the 110th post in this thread, or you can view it direct from this shortcut http://vboards.stratics.com/1898692-post110.html

I really hope this can help the recovery process of Oceania shard.

Unlike the Egypt president, Mystic actually listens to the people!
Thank you for the happy news in todays Producer Update:

Finding a local host for Oceania!!

Could I please suggest (if i may) to be given list of server location so we can test from other geographic point of interest and various ISPs, which i hope is as fast or better than equinix, such as mainly australia (10-60ms ping), followed by new zealand (60-120ms), then below 180ms for outside regions (singapore, japan, hongkong, the USA, canada, etc). I know it cant satisfy everyone, but choices are always good to get the best fit on our scattered-around-the-world current active players.

i should have known the reason why we did a skin-dip event 2 days ago (10th feb) [IMG]

  36. Hey, thats great news. We had some really lousy performance yesterday having to leave the EM event due to it being unplayable. Frustration levels were higher than usual as we contemplated the fact that it has been horrible since december and how much we are spending on crummy USB wireless dongles to get something that doesnt freeze up constantly.

Good for you Mythic!! We wait with anticipation!

Isaac, sorry but I cant help but comment that Sydney is the best place to house the server.

  37. Ok, Im bursting with curiousity. Whos going to spill the beans as to where the Oceania shard will be located within Australia??

It's Back The lagg in a big way Come on carl Where is our solution i can get better game play in a us schard than i can from the one in aussy it that is where in fact u have put it ? This doesnt make sence to me at all ,My Home shard is deserted 99% of the day and i havent seen my guild mates in weeks because of the lagg No on here can play a decent game any more other than a bit of crafting and pet training and the none risky typs of play In the past 2 weeks i have sent the same e-mail to 20 diffrent address in the uo organisation and to date i still havent had one reply so ill post it in below so everyone can read it and may be ill get a responce :

    Hi
I hope this is going to the right place if this is not the right person can you please give me there contact details.

When will we be getting this fixed at the moment oceania a dead shard no one can play because of the lag and a lot of us are fed up with promises Being made to us by the uo team . I spend about $ 600 usd on account fees every year ( which is about $800 to $1000 nzd) and is a lot of money for a distinked lack of service of late , some that I have mover chars to pacfic and atlantic where the lag is a lot less and I can play a reasonable game, As a emissary from Empire of the ocean blade which is oceania’s biggest guild I and our guild are asking you to come on and hurry up and fix this a.s.a.p .
You guys and Gal’s at u o Work for us your customers We pay your wages threw our subscriptions and at the moment it is becoming harder for us to keep people here some have already closed their accounts and left and more will follow it you guys can’t get it right soon , there is no point in us paying you money if we can’t play I have three accounts two of which are at the 119 month mark and I have a lot of time and money invested in this game and at the moment it is worth nothing because I cant play on my home shard with my friends.
may be this will get a respone :cursing:
