After playing on the new server, alot of old memories came back. I even had a strange moment when I realized alot of the old houses and players are gone. Alot of them were interesting characters.

Another interesting thing, was that, the rush of having to worry about other players seemed to make me have the need to play more or longer because every second seemed to be more important, almost as if, getting that gold ring or piece of armour, or even awesome weapon back to the bank was more of an accomplishment.

Part of the problem, I think, is obvious. Eventually people will begin to occupy important areas or even simple spawns and before long manipulate and grief. So, solutions should be discussed.

One of the things, I would think, is that the Brit land mass is to small. Imagine if you had the chance to re-do the whole shard, knowing all of the problems.

One of the problems, would be housing space.

Another, would be, resources. For example: hunting leather off a dragon.

Balance in the way people conform large groups and control or create an unbalance of power.

So, my thoughts, would be to create Britian and then increase the size to about 10 times, including water mass, slightly changing certain footprints, waterways, but keeping the defined Britian map. As far as city locations, just kind of stretch it out.

Then, I would add, roaming guards. Guards of the cities could walk around town and areas around the city. Guards on horseback, mage guards, all different types of guards. The difference being, there would be a radius around the guard, which would be his line of sight or what he could hear.

Once the guards see a crime, or hear someone yell for help, they would move into the area, giving the opportunity for crime to take place. You would even be able to kill the guard. So, having lots of guards would be important in cities to keep any kind of order.

This would take care of power-in-balance because these guards could automatically appear where there has been crimes comitted and then slowly disapate over a few days or increase.

So, guarded areas, would be similar to Trammel, where if it's a guarded area, you could mine, chop wood, and even be protected from spawns.

Another reason, I think it's important that the land mass itself is expanded, is to give players the opportunity to hunt. If I were to go into Shame or any other dungeon, everyone knows, it's a good place to kill or ambush a player. By expanding the lands and the spawns, it makes it more difficult for players to simply wait in one area.

Even more than one enterance to a dungeon might be beneficial. Random spawns would also be interesting, rather than know where something is going to spawn and what it's going to be, it would be nice, to just run into something, like a Medussa, or a Stygian.

I love all of the things we have now, so I think it would be important to keep them, minus the insurance, bless deeds, and so on but I don't understand why you couldn't have imbuing or keep item property. To me these are major advancements in the game.

I just think, everything should be consolidated. For example: If the landmass was expanded, you could add dungeons, including The Abyss and still allow imbuing. Although, i'm not really sure how successful it would be. It would be interesting to be able to loot imbued items off of people.

Even with Faction Items, I don't see a problem if a person is willing to work for something with the risk of losing it, it should be their choice. It all just stays in the game, anyhow, unless someone is real evil and deletes it or lets it decay.

But, to remove things from the game, I just think would be foolish. I would really like to see things go forward and not start taking things out of the game but rather figure out a way to make them work or use them.

So, there are some of my ideas of what a Dream Shard would be.

I just wanted to add places like Luna and Tokuno could be added as islands around Britain or even large continents. So, you would have one large landmass or map rather than, completely different, disconnected areas.

It would be intesting to put timers on certain spells, like, recall, gate, sacred journey, so that these spells couldn't be used over and over, which would force people to use roads or carriages or other types of transportation such as boats.

Right ... by making everything 10x bigger you avoid human interaction. The whole point of Classic is to have to deal with other people, too.

Back in the day there were so many people in the game. You didn't need Bucs Den to PvP, and you certainly didn't need Yew Gate, as we "do" now. You could PvP anywhere, and not because a Champ Spawn forced the issue.

Hell, I remember being able to PvP with 20 random people outside of Delucia.

Or just travel the woods to PK back then. I remember back in the day on GL during the height of the Bloodrock Clan, we would (D-I or Divine Intervention) hunt blue in the woods near our GH all night long. We would even get AMBUSHED on the roads as we traveled and hunted.

When its a surprise like that, it is real PvP. All this Yew Gate trash is old. I miss the days of running around naked on my dexxer.

that is what a classic shard is... we exist as we do today because of all these littel "balance" issues over time.

Weird, having controllable resources was always something that seemed like a GOOD idea to me. It means people working together and being rewarded.

You all should try the siege perilous shard its like oh wait it is what your all talking about.......oh and its been around since the beginning of UO

Sorry i woke up in a bad mood today. I went into sotd and felt like i was playing siege many years ago when we actualy had more player base. I promptly logged off of sotd
  9. What?

    1. Siege has not been around since the beginning of UO. I guess you could say that, in the early times, before Trammel, Chessy was Siege. And Atlantic was Siege. And Pacific was Siege. And Great Lakes was Siege. And your Father. And your Mother. And brother. And Me. And you. *Props to Evey Hammond for the paraphrase*

    2. I don't really get the point you seem to be trying to make with the other content of your post. Can you explain? Are you saying that what the person describes is Siege, more or less?

The idea that any classic shard is going to be like the early days of UO is silly. NOTHING is going to be just like that because the world we all live in is a very different place. I think there can be a shard that has skill based, wide open PvP that emulates lots of the things people that wish for a classic shard yearn for. I won't play there much, if at all, but I think it can exist.

As I see it now, a classic shard would fail just as the game needed to be changed back then and there are several reasons.

    1. There is no balance in power. Playing back then and playing now on the new shard it's very clear and apparent. You need to be an evil character, a red, a murderer, or a thief, or a blue that has no value and doesn't understand his existance at all to have any kind of fun at all. What happens is, as a good guy, you end up fighting as I did last night, 6 to 1 or more, with the remaining blues going grey and I see this number increasing.

So, do you think the good guys just stopped playing video games or do you think they got fed up and went to a better game?

Look at the designers, I have the title Weak Sauce, because I take on 5 to 6 people, to fight for what's good, and because of my Valor and my death in this war, I am considered weak.

Maybe they should give them titles. When 1 red attacks a blue, that's ok, but when his buddy starts helping out, he should get a title: I'm with Stupid and when the blue turns grey, just because he sees an opportunity for the simple win, or kill count, because 5 of his buddies are already killing the target, he should get the title: Pathetic King of the Jack Butts....

What i'm saying is that even the designers are blind and this small group of people, who enjoy this type of thing, are also very small.

We're not talking about a classic shard, we are talking about a hybrid shard, a dream shard. You can't even define a classic shard. I am people, so don't tell me what I want and it's not just about what I want, I have an understanding that comes with experience. I have foresight and intelligence and reasons, not just an idea.

I'm not saying make Luna like it is now, i'm saying learn from it. Make it order. Create Luna as an island. A great city of good, with Paladins you would never see a red or a thief. Create order boats. Put a foggy mist around the island. Make it better than it is now but keep the same concepts.

Same thing with Tokuno. It doesn't have to be like it is now but you have to realize that we should be honored to have the Tokuno Island because it represents a culture of people and adds learning to the game. I didn't know what a bokuto was or a master ninja's title.

These places would be much better placed aside the Britain map, in it's waters and would have more meaning and usefulness because they would be on the same field, not in some type of hidden room.

Same thing with Umbra. Create an evil island. Call it Chaos. Allow for interesting items. Create evil boats. Again, this sounds more fun than what we have right now, to me. When you think of Luna now, what do you think of? Banksitting and Greed. When you think of Umbra, what do you think of? Doom. There is nothing else to these places. They are boring and pointless.

What about Britains map itself. How many fun, fantastic spawns are there on the map? Am I supposed to hunt orcs, liches, and ettins? You mean they can't do any better than that? Add more spawns. We don't need Ilshnar. We can expand the land and place all of these different spawns on the Britain map. Now it's starting to sound exciting.

The shard they have now, is a grief fest and without any guard system, jail time, or some kind of bounty, this system is worthless and bound to failure.

You want people who are just starting the game to be able to create different types of characters. For example: Somebody might create a lumberjack, so what you do, is you have a guard that walks around some of the areas that have trees. Now, he's out cutting wood and he's kind of safe, and he's kind of encouraged, and he's alittle happy.

Now, the PK comes and attacks him. The guard moves in, and begins helping. The PK, if he's able to kill the guard and the lumberjack, takes his wood and gets a count times 2 and maybe a guard bounty, which could be added to some type of quest or the guard is able to knock him unconscience, where he is then taken to jail for a period of time, maybe 5 minutes, depending on his murders. In the next hour or so, there are now 2guards walking around this area.

This stops griefing. If the PK comes back, he has to fight harder and it gives the lumberjack the opportunity to play a game the way he wishes to.

Other resources, that are more valueable, could be placed in areas that rarely see a guard patrol.
