The faint lingering lilac sky all but faded into the shadows. The night resembled that of a pitch-black curtain draped over the sky. The stars made twisted and warped shapes against the blackness. The milky speckles twirled and danced along the sky in various patterns, tugging at the corners of his lips in a way that almost made Mason smile. It was hard to shove aside the worries that corrupted his mind, the events that transpired this night left Mason with a sense of doubt and despair.

Thea had been found, but it was not the Thea who earned the rank of Captain in Cove. She no longer had a fierce look that made even the largest men tremble; she had become a silhouette of her former self, as if walking from a painting and leaving behind everything she once was.

Doubt suddenly shot through Mason like a piercing arrow destroying resistance. Worry grew like a corrupted and malicious oak tree. Its branches twisted into his very soul.

    “Hope.” A child’s voice spoke.

“What hope is there?” Mason muttered.

“There is always hope, it is what keeps you alive.” The voice echoed, fading with the passing wind.

Mason clinched his fist, his nails digging into his palms. Yes, there was hope, even the smallest amount like a seed could worm itself into the ground and become something much greater, something more powerful. Hope, it was all he had.
