The 3.0% SOT was the only reason I went to the puzzle room!
After all, many of us who actually did it by the rules never got any - The two times I went, I got a board, and 30 silver serpent venom.
I suspect it's one of those "even fixed, it was proving too easy for people running every character they had each day" things.
True, but I could see a way of doing it fairly.
Put the SOT on a counter - Each account could get ONE of the SOTs at random, every month (if they are even lucky enough to get it to come up as a possibility - one could go 30 days in a row without that reward popping up) - or have it set to drop one every 100th puzzle completion by a character.
I would like them to also have a relic fragment also to drop from it.
Yet another situation in UO where the moral of the story amounts to "Exploit every system as much as possible, because the eventual fix will only shaft the people who didn't exploit the system."
ok, the obvious solution is just to make it so you can only do it once per account every 24 hours--not per char.
Well, considering the death run through the undead room (I don't know, can the devs squeeze more stuff in there? That'd be great...). They need to do something to make it worth while again. I like the serpent venom mind you, but add relic frags, magical residue, enchanted, essence, imbuing ingredients, more decor items, SOT's, and other goodies to it. Same with the colored floor room, that was fun the first 30 times I did it, but at least add something interesting to it (yes, I know pet dyes used to be there).
And amen to that, I didn't get poop, but the folks who took advantage...
no, the obvious solution is to adjust the sot drop to a lower rate.
You can go another way which has hardly any spawn. Go through the secret doors at the dungeon entrance, north, in the teleporter and then it's to the west past the tangling vines.
the colored floor room's not been fun for me - I'm O-fer in it.
I've literally had the room kick me back out THEN it turned the color it said I missed.
I use teleport a bit to get around those vines so I don't get trapped in them. I have no idea why people go through the undead room unless they're hitting the color room en route. rolleyes:
BTW with teleport you can avoid the acid slugs as well as the entire bloodworm/rotworm room (if you go the undead room route).
I would vote no.
That puzzle is way too easy, especially since the answers are posted all over the internet. You shouldn't get the most powerful variety of the SOT for solving this no-brainer, even if it's a remote chance.
Instead, I think it should be the lower variety of SOT (.01 to 1.0). The 3.0 needs to be the Experimental Room, which is actually a challenge for most of us.
I'm with you on this, the 3.0 SOT should be in the Experimental Room.
Well here I go and I'm gonna get super flamed. A three point skill gain for working anything is just too much, and negates the value of 5 point sots that have been bound.
I'm not even sure I am a big fan of the free skill points, I liked aclarity scrolls a lot better.
The reward, IMHO, should have been the equivalent for what you can get at a fel spawn, 1.0 but in the trammel ruleset, then allow those that wish to work the system for a cumulative reward do so through binders.
I'd like to see an equal and very small chance to get acliarities or sots through the puzzles. But I realize I am talking out of turn, I haven't done the puzzles once, yet.
Well put. But I only blame this about 50% on the exploiters -- the rest of the blame generally falls on the designers for their lack of creativity in fixing said exploit (q.v. Tyball).
Yeah, this is the problem with the experimental room. It's totally unforgiving of less than stellar connections. I wish there were a way to have this puzzle run client-side to remove lag from the equation, but I guess that's an invitation to exploitation.
I like this idea. Maybe a max of .5 or alarity reward for the easier puzzles and a 1. or aclarity for the experimental room. *shrugs*
supposedly they took off the 3.0s because of a different exploit that allowed people to get a sot like every puzzle, think it was something to do with them being cursed. id like to see them returned exploit free and set to 1.0 max instead, or the alacrity, i loved them things!
Most of the items you receive from the puzzle room are worthless now. All the really good deco stuff drop at the lich spawn... .and those of course will be farmed by guilds. I have no chance at getting the good environmental deco items unless I want to pay an outrageous amount of gold (ie...80 Mil for the deco soulforge).
The problem is that those sorts of limitations are not trivial to create. As far as I know, only the housing and vet rewards are able to detect the status of your account as a whole, probably because the data is stored outside the individual shard servers.
I expect generalizing the idea of per-account checks to allow other minor systems to check a central server is rather hard/dangerous, creating all sorts of potential traffic bottlenecks/single-point-of-failure risks.
Why? I never even got one all the times I did it. See this is the problem lower spawn rate-1 per character etc.. The exploit has being fixed correct? The Sot are out there in mass. Now the ones who got all the SOT too many to sell need to kill the competition. So by calling on lower spawn rate-1per character any other nerfs all the SOT they have in stock won't be worthless and they can maximize there profits as soon as stock run dry.
Im sorry but I think it was fine as it was (minus the exploit of course) You already had an pretty small chance of getting an SoT, and even if you were lucky enough to get one, it was usually something you didnt need.
One person mentioned that they "thought" they might have been removed because they were too easy and everybody jumped on the band wagon assuming that was the real reason. I think they were removed because as another posted said, there was a way to drastically increase your chances of getting an SoT. NOT because the original, intended method was giving out too many.
Once they get the bug fixed they should return it to the exact same way it was before. Every opinion against the original distribution rate so far has been based on speculation. Anybody who has tried to farm these, even on all their chars on multiple accounts will tell you that these do not drop very often, and again, when they do drop its usually not one you can use. The chance of getting an Animal Taming or Imbuing SoT is already so incredibly small its nothing to worry about. Dropping the chances for an SoT any more would make this not worth doing at all.
It's difficult for me to add much to this conversation, I wasn't in there before the "fix" so can't really get a "feel" for what's "proper." I'd stay out of this conversation completely, but am I the only one that really has no problem with 3.0s being readily available if players commit their time and efforts to attaining them? I do agree they should be a challenge, but really all a SOT - 3.0 or 0.1 - means to me personally is a method to get around a cumbersome skill gains system, something that has been elusive forever. Yeah, I know some see them as a quick ticket to a 30 mil gp sale from their vendor, but to me, they should be a play boost opposed to a revenue boost. So I say SOTs, even 3.0s, for everyone!
sots of 0.1 to 1,0 drop rate and make it once per account per 24 hours..... not per char ...[and NOT 6 chars every 2 hours thats a lot of gifts per day]
I completely agree with Harb here. The current skill gaining system is what is broken, not 3.SoTs. The SoTs simply allow you to finish off a skill. Once per char per day is perfect. They are more then rare enough with that timing. And seeing as how its still very hard to get the actual skill you need, this encourages player interaction through trading. I think that having the 3.0 SoTs as a reward is a GREAT idea! I think it should be kept, and I think that it should be kept at once per day per char.
I will probably get flamed and hated on but what ever happened to actually WORKING the skills up? I appreciate my characters more because I made them what they are. Not by double clicking a pink scroll. I think SoT's were a ridiculous add to UO. No one has to really work for anything anymore.
I thought it would be fine if they put maybe a 2.0 SoT in the coin rewards... since you can only use one coin a day.... that would certainly lessen the number of SoT's obtained.
No flame at all, in fact of the 28 characters the wife and/ or I play, there are exactly 0.0 skills from SOTs or alacrity bonus. That said, going it the "hard way" is far from anything I'd encourage or dictate to anyone, friend/ foe/ vet/ newer player. I just find it absurd, that of the six or so of ours who still have some range for gains, that I have to wait 51 hours to grab the GGS points for the Mrs, who won't "grind away" at anything (thus I do it for her). Having been at this for 12+ years, I'm just saying that IMO, our skill gain system, in all of it's various flavors over the course of time, has always been a tad on the "repressive" side
I do agree with you that the GGS is broken. Too bad we don't get power hour anymore. Hell, I would take a power 15 minutes just to grab a few extra points but at least I would be doing the work and not eating a scroll.
Definitely not that rare. I could understand possibly one a day per account but not one a month.
Frankly, the drop rate was just fine. If someone has 100 characters to run through there, fine, let them spend all day running those 100 characters through there.
My issue with the removal of the 3.0 SoT is that, as usual (and as others have alluded to), the fix for an issue is "Okay, the people who exploited the system get the spoils, everyone else loses out."
They really need to stop fixing things by making it so the first few in get the advantage and after that, everyone else gets left in the cold. Certain situations, there are no easy fixes (ie: getting 15000 loyalty off of acid slugs... they had to close that hole, and there's no easy way to clean up the damage). However, closing off the 3.0s simply means those who exploited get to keep them en masse, sell them for a higher price now because they can't be obtained, and those who are here in the aftermath MAY get to get them if they put them back in (which they should).
okay, here's the solution: make the hallway so dangerous that one misstep and you get like 500+ damage. and then also your corpse gets taken away and then everything in your bank disappears also.
or just give us alacrity scrolls in lieu of pinks.
Alright...so now you wish to exclude those with disabilities from ANOTHER puzzle room eh? Well done!
i don't know what you're talking about but it sounds stupid.
In my opinion the one thing that has had a bad influence on UO is the constant whining. I agree with fixing the bug.....but really what the heck is the big deal. Ohhhhh someone might actually gm a skill without working it for a year..ohhh how horrid!! Get a grip, not all of us have 6-12 hours a day 7 days a week to play uo, yet we spend the same amount of dollars each month. As long as the bug was there what is the difference with using it? It was legal, sending bags are legal. Ok yes fix it, so you no longer can, but now its fixed put the sots back! You dont want people scripting skills and I agree I have never done that, but at least with the sot's I had a chance to gm a couple skills that for months and months I have been maybe gaining 0.4 pts a week. Add that up and tell me how long it would take to gm that skill. Stop the whining, have fun and play the dam game!
