The skill is checked everytime you use an axe. You have the axe equipped to receive logs from a tree. With the release of UO:Renaissance, lumberjacking became a a damage bonus for all 2-handed axe weapons (Hatchet, Axe, Battle Axe, Double Axe, Executioner’s Axe, Large Battle Axe, Two-handed Axe).
