Why is it that Castles and Keeps are not allowed in Malas? I would like to see this changed!
The question was asked and answered in the last developers video. The answer was "No, it couldn't be done." If I understood correctly, there's something about the design of those lands that prohibit placement - it's not just an off/off switch.
Someone else might remember more details, but the answer was a definite "No."
No, but it would have zero effect on my 18x18s in Tokuno?
The castles in Malas were dev placed. A player couldn't place them, but someone with elevated permissions basically sidesteps placement rules.
It's not an on/off switch. At the time and based on what Mesanna's answers were last dev chat, the devs felt castles and keeps were a mistake and houses that big should never have been allowed into UO. The hope was that going forward new lands would not allow them and remaining ones would atrophy out of the game in time.
Malas, Tokuno and Termur were all designed to prevent placement of castles and keeps in mind. Malas in particular was specifically designed to have rocks or other obstacles every 20 or so tiles, so that nothing bigger than an 18x18 could ever be placed there. So the map itself is designed to prevent these placements and even if the devs toggled it so you could place castled in Malas, they would never physically fit anywhere.
The castles in Malas were given away during a contest and were placed by GM's. GM's can place houses wherever they want regardless of landscape.
They'd have to literally remove castles and keeps from the game for them to ever go away, people like their big ugly blocks way too much
I just think its' still hilarious that they gave away (allegedly) 10 on each shard, and ended up placing what ? 2 in total if that. It was a big joke of a promotion.
Hu? Have you ever been to Malas? I can guarantee that there is not a rock or tree placed every 20 tiles. I have to admit that I am not the most up-to-date person out there when it comes to communication from the Dev's, but I don't remember them ever saying anything like this. From what I understand it is very much an on/off switch, and if they wanted to they could allow castles in Malas simply by changing the housing placement settings, but they choose not to.
I am not necessarily in favor of allowing castles in Malas, but the reasons you provided strike me as pretty far off. But like I said, I could be wrong.
Was stated in the dev design threads when AOS was being made. But it's ok if you don't remember, I mean that was over a decade ago! Hanse and company were in charge of the Malas design.
Man, time flies.
I am betting they could clean up the map to allow keeps and castles to be placed in Malas. It was foolish of the dev of the time to try and phase out any of the original housing types and whatever they did to prevent the placement of those types of homes should be corrected. I am not a huge fan of them because of the layout and wasted spaces, but my guild does have a player run town in the Dry Highlands of Malas and some of my guild mates prefer castles/keeps. The fact that they cannot be placed in Malas makes it difficult for those who want to live there, but have no hope of placing the type of housing they prefer.
I see no real reason for that limitation to remain in place.
I think a better solution would be to give all houses the storage capacity of a Castle and then many of the castles (not all) would drop in favor of customizable housing.
I'd keep my castle regardless... cause it's a castle.
Mesanna stated in a dev talk on one of the shards lately that the system is not designed for keeps and castle's in malas - and they would not change it.
Yeah, Mesanna was pretty emphatic in her "NO".
There was no mistaking her meaning.
Allow castles in Malas and you'll have them all over the place, just like they are in Trammel/Fel. It makes boring and dumb sight frankly, to have the same exact gray pile of stone behind every corner and hill. So please, no.
However, I'd much like it if they were to finally somehow add customizable lots in scale of castles.
Malas may not be designed for castles but they are there anyway if you know where to look.
but there are castles in malas so thats not true
and malas is mostly empty reams and reams of grassland....some shards have empty castle spots in tram and felucca so opening up in malas would not make any difference on the lower populated shards....some of the average populous shards then people would prob place a second home/castle...cant see it being an issue at all if they allowed it
But (as already said) they were placed by GMs not players.
yes so they can ''in theory''be placed...and dont think stones/small shrubs , etc, stop placement...as they dont
That is excactly what Mesanna said could NOT be done. They are placed by GM's as a Object - not as a house design. The servers have not the software to do it, the land mass is not designed for it. Dont ask me what they need to do to change it - but as the Chief says it is not doable, I take her word for that.
So you would like a castle sized 3 story borg cube?
I for one think 18x18 is enough space.
Can we make a deal for Siege, each time a castle or keep drop in Felucca, that one keep or castle will be allowed to be place in Malas and the plot in Felucca would not again allow a keep or castle to be placed.
I would love to see some of this keep and castles gone.
I miss having less keep and castle in Safe Haven
This is much better and there are still room for some small houses
I hope this happens prefab designs, and we will be able to place them in faucets besides tram in fel.
I don't pretend to understand the technical reasons of why it can't be done easily, I am just reporting what the developers have already said on more than one occasion. If you or anyone else disagrees with that, you need to take it up with them - and they have already said "No."
GMs can manually place houses, or force down houses. I still wish they'd done it for my large patio all those years ago, stuck in the Ocllo trees when I was trying to find a spot for a large house.
However, as I've pointed out before, "can't" doesn't apply when they control the physics of the universe. They can change placement rules about rocks (and whatever else in Malas deliberately blocks house placement), even about the two spots in the Stygian Abyss dungeon.
Yes I would love some new designs for keeps and castles. I would love one castle size one, 31x31 with a small tower in each corner, with a locked door, then a wall around it all,
Inside the wall, could be a few small houses, then the players could deco the rest.
Or just a group of smaller houses on the plot, like a little community.
If I could do a three story, castle sized Borg cube, I would do whatever it takes to get a castle on every account.
MMMMM [LOL]...SO LET broadsword give away another 100 castles placed by THE GMs....if its anything like the last 10 castle promo.....then .....only a 1/4 or even a 1/5th will get placed anyways...cant see 20/25 new malas castle hurting any shard...even atlantic!!!muahhahahaa
lets be honest...malas is ......well frankly .... it is..... its green acre..... on 22 out the 27 shards...whole snow caves are vacvant....huge grass plains want attention....what do we do??? leave em empty forever and ever?????????????
So go place a house there?
probably would if i can place a a easy second malas castle[max secure]....LOL...as if any one is gonna place a crap 1818?????????????? nononono no they are not
but like i said some lesser shards have empty castle spots on tramm and felluca... so this makes no sense of any hope....why open more when the castle spots avaialble are not even filled....crazy days
again i say noone would blink a eye lid if it did happen ....bar maybe the 4-5 top shards were there woul dbe a new malas landrush
goes to drop a 1818 in middle of empty caves on old freebie accounts on 2 dime ebay buys on a few of the shards in PURE hope....LOL
A credit to your community.
You know you can edit a post right?
You should see what I do to EM placed stuff where there's room to drop a house across it!
THP? You have done your Siege portion of the around the world quest you are on? I certainly hope not.
I am not giving up my castle or keep there Freja
Castle in and of itself is a borg cube as it is : p Making them customizable would at least provide varied types of borg cubes.
No no no, I said when they fall, because someone left the game.
Fixing the problem with players paying only one month out of 3 may help too, so the castles at least will have active users.
Imagine 3 castles stacked up ontop of each other.... That is what would happen.
I hope they never will be customizable but I'm sure, the players could make some cool designs for new classic castle and keep choices.
Allow it on a TC and let the players vote for a few to be added classic large houses.

[18:19:26] [Mesanna]: ok this is the final answer on castles and keeps
[18:19:39] [Pandora]: *listens*
[18:19:41] [Mesanna]: we can not make the customizable
[18:19:42] [Mesanna]: but
[18:19:53] [Misk]: BUT
[18:19:54] [Mesanna]: we can come up with different prefab designs of these
[18:20:00] [Pandora]: interesting....
[18:20:03] [Mesanna]: NOW
[18:20:11] [Mesanna]: it might be interesting
[18:20:17] [Mesanna]: and I will talk it over with the team
[18:20:29] [Mesanna]: to see if its possible before I actually step to deep
[18:20:33] [Pandora]: *nods*
[18:20:35] [Pandora]: heh
[18:20:36] [Mesanna]: and let the players maybe even design them
Yep, I did read that and it is very interesting.
Personally, I think creatures should assult castles and that you have to pay a monthly maintenance fee to repair it.
It's a castle, it should be under siege every so often.
Personally id just rather they allow you to place 18x18 with castle storage for castle price, and take castles off the menu. They just take up too much space IMO, no matter how nice they look.
