Do you honestly expect me to read or retain a single word of that article with a thumbnail of this on the same page?!
how about this one - my personal favorite for it's bizarro-world distraction factor:
(make sure you click on it to appreciate it at full size)
No offence, Nine, but Imma stick with the santa guy. *nod nod*
yeaaaaaaaaah, me too LOL!!!
if THAT santa came down my chimney he wouldn't be leaving.
(at least not until sometime after new years...)
About the news: Crikey :-/
About the Santa Guy: *nods along with the girls all googly eyed*
ps - i still can't believe someone actually makes wigs for cats.
aye..and that person is making TONS of money by making them too. Im smacking my self for not thinking about it first...
As for EA making cuts...Almost every job is making cuts...Will they cut UO? Probally not since UO is making money.
As for new games and so forth...Theres your biggest cuts there.
Why cut something if its making you money...Even if its not alot of money still its better than none.
I will take one of those too *raises hand*
the Santa guy that is , oh and make it to go please
When were you going to introduce me Nico?
I'm having him washed & sent to my tent. I'll think about releasing him sometime in the next few days.
EDIT:- Oh, and, Flutter? Ya might wanna get out from under me bed, hon. I've a feeling we may encounter some turbulence...
Dam, well I am glad that we cant find any copies of UO on the store shelves then!!!!
And for the male Posters I yell "Where Is Miss Claus?" !!!!!!!!
Well, I was going to post something about how musing about possible job cuts is just bad morale - whether or not it's true, it's always better to ignore it unless it actually happens. But as I read the thread, I realized that people seem to have already found a way to distract themselves
You hear that Warhammer? You are mediocre.
I'm sorry...what did you say? I was daydreaming again....
Sweet "Hon" I mean Home Alabama!
What was the article supposed to be about again?
and you think warhammer is better than mediocre?.... just wait till darkfall steals players from every existing mmorpg
well how things are going...will anybody be able to buy Darkfall when it comes out?
I bet ya won't have to jump thru hoops, make 5 phone calls, and beg to get a Darkfall account created *grins*
Hopefully, will be able to buy the game, go to a functioning website, enter a few numbers and info, and VOILA!! entertainment begins!
Mmm... Do remember the only thing (supposedly) that kept them from canceling UO when the shift to mythic went over was mark jacobs.
Mark Jacobs is not nearly as cute as the Santa Guy!!!
Sorry ladies I didn’t mean to post a picture of myself along with the article.
I would like to hear from someone on the team, perhaps even —Heaven forbid!!— Mr. Jacobs himself about to what extent this will impact UO.
Although UO is, in the words of a Mythic executive, "wildly profitable," Mr. Jacobs dropped the bombshell a month or so ago (is that right?) that EA wanted to dump UO entirely before he took it over.
The only possible conclusion is that EA has no clue when it comes to MMOs, does not understand the business model, and stands poised to make irrational decisions.
When I hear about a company prone to corporate irrationality announce cuts, and that company is in charge of an important hobby of mine, I get nervous.
So please, Mr. Jacobs or someone who can speak for the manufacturer, come on and reassure us if you can.
I suspect that the console and single player depts will take most of the hits. I could be wrong.
What, their Euro players?
You might want to re-check the info on Darkfall. It's gonna be harder for non-Europeans to buy, let alone play, than it is for a European player to get a UO boxed set. And no servers outside Europe, either....
I'll never understand the whole body shaving thing on guys. It makes them look less guylike in my humble, totally irrelevant opinion.
It must go back to some deep rooted Ken doll thing in the psyche of western women.
It's nice to see Stratics turning into a softcore porn web forum.
In either case, with the economy right now, I'm not surprised gaming companies are taking a hit too. I wouldn't worry about anything, as it is unlikely to affect UO in any way.
Puleeze...you would see more skin on a beach in the summer time.
yea it launches in europe first, that doesnt mean its not gonna launch in the US shortly after, and of course it will have US servers at that point, the same way uo and wow both have servers in other continents
wow has this thread gone way off topic. Sad to hear about the job cuts. I wonder if EA will announce what projects will be effected by this though.
Demonus - keep believing that, because that's not what the released info indicates....
As for the on-topic subject, I get the feeling a LOT of the cuts are going to be in the area of the company dedicated to "Spore", as that product didn't do ANYWHERE near as well as they thought it would.
At least the northern star isnt in the southern hemisphere!!!!
To whoever said nothing of EA's oversold or outdid their projections, you obviously aren't aware of Dead Space, which outsold their projected values by a very large margin.
Dead Space, when it's sequel and the following movie launch will do what EA wanted Crysis to do.
The Animated Comic and the Anime have also become quite popular- they serve as prequels along with that Browser-based adventure mini game.
To be fair, the game simply rocks.
As for Darkfail...... I hope it proves to be the crutch you wish it to be.. Because it will never be more and I just know what we got now doesn't cut it. I'd wait at least until "The Secret World" launches.. Yeah I know that's a long time probably but whatever. Tired of playing the same game with different graphics, skillsets or classes.
i dunno what u've been reading... im sure the makers of darkfall aren't stupid, if they kept the game only in europe they'd make very little money, they would have to have american, japan and korean server to make a lot of cash
Actually Spore is nominated to be the most pirated pc game this year.
Might have something to do with the negative press the copyright protection of that game got.
Sadly cuts are happening everywhere, my husband is staring down at possibly no job in a few months. It's scary business. But I agree with some of the other posters, UO is a money maker even if not huge. Would be kinda silly to let it go now.
Ok...so this is OT, but I must!
Oriana, your avatar is the cutest! I can't wait to get some holiday goodies to my cat this week, who's staying with my Aunt temporarily. I miss him horribly!
Also, hope all goes well with your husband's job, or any new positions he may seek. My boyfriend was laid off last month, and although other larger companies in his industry were laying off too, he landed a nice position for the same pay at another aircraft shop...even received holiday pay for Thanksgiving, just a few days after he started. So there are still some good jobs and understanding bosses out there!
Yes it would be silly.
However, several weeks to a month or two ago, Mark Jacobs dropped a bombshell on some site he posts on (not here of course), that EA wanted to cancel UO before he took it over.
Assuming he wasn't exaggerating....And assuming that something another Mythic person said (that UO had 100k subscriptions and was "still wildly profitable") is also true....That means EA is even less sure what to do about UO than we would have thought.
Frankly I'd really like to hear from some former EA folks on this. There's got to be someone who's confidentiality agreement is running out.
That witty lil comment caused the Piper to laugh so hard he spat coffee everywhere!
This stinks! Besides the fact that i hate hearing about people losing their jobs, i know the only thing keeping this game afloat is the fact that it has been around so long. If these cutbacks continue, it will only be a matter of time before someone looks in our direction. Also, as much as i hate to admit it, SA could very well be one of the projects they are talking about.
Thanks Littleblue. I love cats..obviously.
And thanks for the good thoughts on jobs.
As to OT, we can argue about what game will do what, but the best thing any of us can do, is try to support the games we love and hope for the best. Me I'll be sticking around UO for as long as I can.
I would be surprised if EA ever officially kills UO, at least not until the subscription fees are out weighted by operating costs.
If they eliminate most of the devolpers, and most of the staff...they can basically run the game for cost of the bandwidth and server up keep.
Which is pretty much what it feels like they are doing already.
I don't know much about servers and operating costs associated with them, but if we have even 50,000 subscribers, thats on average of $500,000 per month in subscription fees. Assuming taxes, processing payments, etc...there is a lot left to run the game minimally and still make a profit.
50k x 12 months x $12/month = $7.2 million / year
They cant really run it in zombie mode, because in the last 2 years subscribers have shrunk from 125K to 75k to ??.
then you have the website where people buy tokens and all that stuff from which is probably making a lot of money
UO gives a steady, regular income with no expensive 'royalties' to be paid out.
They have been hiring new developers and they just announced the resumption of EM program. But lets ignore all the signs that point towards a healthy future with committed investment and speculate!
Stop pointing out the obvious and let the UHallers have their fun.
