Today I am asking a bit of a broad subject of all of you. Still this question will give you a chance to show some pride on the character you play. So without any further ado here is the question.

What is your favorite character class to play and why? What character class do you think needs to get more loving from the dev team?

I know I love playing Vallend who is Paladin/Mage/samurai but for most high level combat situations he just is not able to compete with the archers and tamers used by so many players now. So I do not get to play him as much as I would love to.

    My favorite character is:
    my crafter...
    no, my pvp bushido archer,
    bah, my tamer weaver,
grr, my champ spawner necro mage,
    well, maybe my TormTar,

It all depends on my mood...
    somedays I go kill reds,
    somedays I fight the pirates,
    somedays I want to craft...

I'm lucky enough to have a huge Circle of friends that allow me to go anywhere, hunt anything... and a great opposing guild, called UP, that I can fight in honor.

Guess UO is what you make of it... for some a playground, for others a battlefield... and for others it is their prison... they never get out of the "box".

    One Circle! One Soul! :lick:

Not able to compete Vallend? I remember you were right in the front lines doing battle with a Yamandon in the Tokono lands without dying. I have witnessed thy inner strength...your just being humble =-P

Now me, myself, I'm no stranger to dying heh...never seems to be a wandering healer when you need one.

  5. I agree with Hagrid. BarefootPrincess always remembers you at the forefront of the charge in any battle scenario.
I'm not clear on what you mean by not being able to compete with other player types though. Do you mean:
    A.) PvP combat
B.) Being more uber than they are against a particular monster target?

If it is A., then is it a result of skill imbalance or item imbalance? IMHO a level playing field is the only true test of a warrior's mastery of his/her particular skill set and of the strength/weakness of that template.
If B., then actually the same question applies. Is the tamer and his/her that highly skilled and well trained or just pumped up with special items?
The strengths and weaknesses of the enemy must also be considered as determining what type of combatant has an advantage over others against them.
If you look at Vallend's skills as a leader, organizer and motivator to action in the Catskills community as well as his fighting skills as part of a battle party, the he is a shining example of a true Paladin.
If you base your judgement on his ability to single-handedly take on and defeat any foe on the shard then you will be disappointed.
Alas I fear that the shift from building a character based on skill mastery to one of piecing together the right set of armor/jewelry/arties to crowd a template with low level skills is detrimental to the game. It leaves new players and those without the time and gold to have access to the "right stuff" out of the action. It discourages community building and co-operativity among players with different skill sets learning to fight as a tem and share in the rewards.
That being said, my favorite character to play on Cats is BarefootPrincess who is a peace/tamer. I enjoy pet training and hunting with a party where I am usually the one who heals/rezzes both pets and fellow combatants as well as sends in my pets to take some damage for melee warriors who are up front.

My favorite character to play in groups is bar none my spellweaving mage. If I can get a level 5 focus before the hunt, it's even better. Of all of my characters, Kei Wa is the most flexible of them all. He can survive in almost any situation, does more damage than most other character types, has the "uber" armor that keeps him alive and is great for working in teams where my team mates have trouble standing still to get bandaged. I even spend some time being the tank, even if there's meat shield... er ... warriors in the area.

If I'm alone, then I prefer my sampire. I can actually hunt more higher end things alone with my sampire than I can in groups that have never worked together or have inexperienced players with another template. The biggest problem with Aneirin (my sammy) is that he is completely built for hunting solo. The only thing he is good for in a group is meat shield, which he does better than most tames in the right situation.

The character who I haven't been playing is my bard. I used to love being the bard way back when, but now it seems to have lost its beat.

The character I would love to revive is my thief. Every once in a while I log in to my thief character just to see "grandmaster pickpocket" on my screen and remember old times. There isn't a thing I'd use a thief for today on a normal production shard. On the other hand, I can't think of a way to revive stealing without causing more misery than joy. So I'll just keep on waiting.

I like playing my fish mage, archer and Anny the bag lady. Anny is just for fun, with some begging skill and enough taming to wander through town surrounded by cats.

The most neglected chars are tinkers and shepherds. Tinkers should get BOD's or at least NPC's who will uy anything a tinker can make. Herding could be a fun skill if it were only useful for more than blocking enemies during guild wars.
  8. This depends on the situation, although I have always been partial to bards... bard tamers, bard mages. The ones that can tell a story, not just hit the provoke macro, those are the ones I enjoy being around.

As for tinkers, my tinker paid for my keep by selling Pendant, Scrapper's and other recipe scrolls from Heartwood. I made more gold tinkering than from everything else combined! Business has dried up now, though. Time for new recipes!!!

I always thought you were partial to fat bottom service wenches! Which explains why you hang out in taverns all day....I thought barding was at best a secondary skill you developed after you became a legendary wencher!

My favorite character at the time I quit was my archer/bard requiem.

    80 Chiv
    90 Focus
    110 Music
    110 Arch
    110 Tacs
    95 Disco
    110 Peace

    100 str
    100 dex
    60 int

I just reactivated tonight and I've been dinkin around with him a little bit, his set up still seems to work pretty well - with an ele slayer bow and instrument I can sit & farm blood eles at relatively little risk to myself. I don't know if any of my caps are higher now (it reads as a 67 month account) I haven't tried anything more difficult yet. Any advice about changes that have been made in the last couple years would be appreciated. I also wouldn't mind meeting up with some active players for a night to see what people do for kicks these days.
