After seeing how server merges are being implemented in Star Wars The Old Republic, it makes me wonder why UO can't follow the same methodology.

Speaking only of the USA servers for now, 1 East Coast (Atlantic) and 1 West Coast (Pacific) server are more than enough to support the current player population. In addition to those 2 primary servers, Origin could be kept around in the same capacity as today and Siege Perilous could be left unchanged.

So how do we get there? By following a plan very similar to that of The Old Republic. Enable free transfers from any USA server not listed above to either Atlantic, Pacific, or Origin and allow a substantial amount of time for players to willingly transfer. No new characters could be created on all other servers and no transfers would be permitted back to those servers. Free transfers could be enabled for as long as 6 months or possibly even a year. This doesn't have to be accomplished overnight. There may need to be some sort of limitation to prevent people from continually creating and transferring characters, but I'm sure that could be figured out.

Once the free transfer period has passed, I expect that most active players would have already transferred willingly to secure housing space on the destination servers. At this point, it would be time for forced transfers and those would be a little trickier, but I still think they could be done. Simply deleting all non-transferred characters is much to harsh, so my thinking is that some type of "holding server" could be created where all non-transferred character data is dumped to. That way if someone didn't transfer their character for whatever reason, that character still exists in a location where it can be transferred from at a later date. The problem here is that some people have 7 characters on every server, meaning a lot of space would be required to maintain all this character data indefinitely, but I still don't see why it couldn't be done. At this point, any items still remaining in a house, along with the house itself, would probably be lost unless they can be somehow incorporated into the same "holding server". That is just one idea and I'm sure there are others for implementing the forced transfer.

In the end, the benefit of this whole process would be a condensed server population to help ensure the health of the game for the coming years. Of course there are a few negatives, such as houses being lost, but given enough time to transfer freely I believe the impact would be minimized. The other potentially larger negative would be the loss of transfer token income for EA, since we don't know exactly how much money they make from selling transfer tokens. I find it hard to believe that they make a huge amount of money from transfer tokens alone, but I'm sure it also not completely insignificant. They would be making an investment in the future of the game which may cost them a little bit in the short term.

I know there will be some people who steadfastly maintain that they like their servers and don't want to transfer, and I do understand that mindset, but I also believe that this is a sacrifice that may need to be made in order to keep UO viable in the future. So I ask, why not begin the process now and work toward an end goal of moving everyone to more populated (and therefore significantly more active) servers?

As I'm not 100% opposed to the idea the problem with it is simple..there is currently no housing available on Atlantic worth anything so what that happens I move there and end up homeless paying extreme inflation for a house..which ok fine whatever..I lose my current house..ok fine whatever..hypothetically if that was reaction ok that works..but what about shard history the landmarks the friends or the quiet hunts..unfortunately it'll never happen we have a better chance at the opening a fresh server giving free transfers and seeing what happens..but in the end if they just "take it" more will quit due to being unhappy..

Jeff Skalski, back when he used to talk about UO, actually summed up the problem as well as the only fair solution:
The only fair way is to treat everybody equally and force everybody to start over, and there is no way in hell that will ever happen.

Anything short of treating everybody equally and you're telling one group of players that they are not as important as another group of players, simply because they picked the wrong shard 10 years ago.

And by the way, this does not ensure the health of the game, it takes an already small population and simply shuffles them around.

Do you seriously want something that will ensure the health of the game for years to come? You bring in new players.

Anything short of that and you're shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic, because eventually enough people will leave, without enough replacements coming in, that UO will shut down.

Bring new people in. That's the only way that UO will reach the 20th Anniversary.

half of what UO is, is history.
and thats a shard specific thing.

old SEER spots, old EM event stuff, there are little things all over that make each shard individual.
and people by and far like that kinda thing.

i can see why people would want to merge servers.
and i know why im against it.

personally, if i wanted to play on a busy shard id already be there playing.
to force me to play on a busy shard isn't gonna work, cause i don't enjoy playing in packs of 50 people.
i like smaller packs of like 3-5.

and there are so many logistic things that are gonna make this an immposibility.
housing is the first and biggest.
and why do we have to go to YOUR shard.
why cant we all move to Sonona?
that way i get to keep my house and YOU have to live in a tent.
    ect ect ect.
and could you imagine moving a castle worth of stuff to another shard?
hassle to the power of 10!

to temp anyone to wanna do this youd have to make it easy.
easy like "WE will move you"
    that kinda easy.

and what about people that already have their entire account full of developed characters.... scrolled out, developed, armoured ecte ect ect?

so not only do i have to move to another shard, i have to delete 21 characters that are already there to move my mains over?
that was like 6 months work to make all those guys?
all that time put into development... and the cost.... and the TIME!

i think at the end of the day when i hear someone bring up this topic all i can think of is other parents that call me and ask if i will being one of my kids over to their place to play with their kid, because the kid cant make friends on his own.
    that how this feels.
people want me to move to Atlantic because they chased off the people that where there and now need to force people to play with them.

Simple, move there first and look for a plot before committing to anything. Saying "there is currently no housing available on Atlantic" is a bit stupid, when there is spaces around.
I managed to get a max storage plot next to a wood and right on the coastline within 4 days of playing. Sure, decent secluded spots are in high demand but seek and thee shall find.
Once I was setup I dropped my house on my home shard and moved over.

The OP and everyone else who creates these threads clearly doesn't understand UO because if they did they would realize that a server merger after 15 years will kill UO. I know so many people who would quit if they lost their shard/house and the large drop in subs along with the money it would cost to implement this would be the deathblow to UO.

Because it's a totally different creature. UO has a long history based on shard communities and locations, customised and decorated houses that people have invested years, money (in-game and often RL) and emotion in to. SWToR is essentially a multi-player first person shooter with some decent story elements but zero history as a game culture , just borrowed and rebuilt 'lore' from the films and books. Comparing the two is silly.
