Shard downtime?

Discussion in 'UO Players Corner' started by warningshots, Aug 18, 2008.

Newbie here, I just noticed my shard isn't available on the list when I log into UO. I was wondering, is there a website that shows which shards are down and up and maybe even scheduled downtimes for the shards? I play on Atlantic. Thanks.

Yes, the information is available on EA's web page for UO, for scheduled downtimes. Unscheduled downtimes are another matter, though they typically will try to send out "System Alerts" (messages in big gray letters on the bottom of your screen, where party, guild and alliance chat normally appears) when they are going to take down a shard intentionally, be it for scheduled or emergency maintenance (like what occurred with Atlantic today). OF course, there's no way to warn if if it's an actual crash, but those are very rare.

Here is the info from that page....

The Ultima Online servers are constantly in the process of "backing up" the game. It takes about 45 to 90 minutes for each cycle to complete, though the length of time this takes depends greatly on the amount of data that is stored in each world.

The daily maintenance period will start at the first completed backup cycle after the maintenance window begins. For example, if all things were perfect, the backup would end at 5:00am, and the server would go down for maintenance at this time as well. However, if the server is in the middle of a backup at 5:00am, it will continue that backup to the end, and then go down for maintenance. Due to this factor of uncontrolled variability in the backup cycles, the downtime will not happen at exactly 5:00am each day.
